Tucker Carlson on Monday night shared his thoughts on the resignation of Blake Neff, his Fox News program’s top writer, who was revealed to have penned racist and sexist messages using a pseudonym.

“What Blake wrote anonymously was wrong,” Carlson said towards the end of the hour on Monday. “We don’t endorse those words. They have no connection to the show.” He acknowledged that Blake “fell short” of the standards of human decency, “and he has paid a heavy price for that.”

Carlson then directed his ire to the “ghouls now beating their chest in triumph.” To those celebrating Neff’s exit, Carlson said, “righteousness also has its costs. When we pose as blameless in order to hurt other people, we are committing the gravest sin of all.”

A Fox News rep told CNN Business that Neff resigned on July 10 from Tucker Carlson Tonight, after an investigation revealed that Neff had been posting on AutoAdmit, a message board notorious for vulgar and offensive content. As “CharlesXII,” Neff made a series of brazenly racist comments, including a June 5 post that read: “Black doods staying inside playing Call of Duty is probably one of the biggest factors keeping crime down.” He also wrote that he “wouldn’t get LASIK from an Asian for free” and commented that “given how tired black people always claim to be, maybe the real crisis is their lack of sleep.”

Previously a reporter at conservative outlet The Daily Caller, Neff worked for Fox News for four years and was considered Carlson’s top writer. (As Neff once told a Dartmouth alumni magazine, “anything [Carlson is] reading off the teleprompter, the first draft was written by me.”)

Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and president/executive editor Jay Wallace confirmed in a statement that Neff “made horrendous and deeply offensive racist, sexist and homophobic comments,” adding: “We want to make abundantly clear that FOX News Media strongly condemns this horrific racist, misogynistic and homophobic behavior…. [A]ctions such as his cannot and will not be tolerated at any time in any part of our workforce”

Carlson himself attracted controversy in March 2019, when comments he made years prior on the Bubba the Love Sponge shock jock radio program resurfaced. There, Carlson described women as “very primitive,” called Martha Stewart’s daughter Alexis “c–ty,” and dubbed Britney Spears and Paris Hilton “the biggest white whores in America.” He also said on the call-in program that “Iraq is a crappy place filled with… semi-literate primitive monkeys.”

Carlson did not apologize for those years-old comments but instead dismissed the hubbub as “liberal hypocrisy,” asserting that he and Fox News “will never bow to the mob, ever, no matter what.” And despite all that and more since, Tucker Carlson Tonight is the top-rated program on all of cable news, averaging a record 4.3 million total viewers last quarter.

On Saturday, Trump lapsed into his pre-summit rhetoric again, calling Trudeau “dishonest and week” in a fresh series of angry tweets. He reiterated that the recently imposed US tariffs on metal imports from Canada and other nations are a response to what he believes is trade inequality.

Trump lashed out at “Justin’s false statements” at a press conference following the summit. There, Trudeau repeated his earlier description of US trade tariffs as “insulting” and vowed retaliatory measures would come in July.

A few minutes later, Trump changed his Twitter profile header picture from the G7 family photo to a photograph of himself singing the anthem with members of US military in Atlanta in January this year – apparently another jab at his summit-mates, considering how far back he had to dig to find that one.

Trudeau’s office responded to the verbal attack in a statement saying that the PM did nothing to provoke an outburst from Trump.

“The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn’t said before — both in public, and in private conversations with the President,” it stated, adding that the Canadian government remains “focused on everything we accomplished here at the summit.”

“We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies,” the post-summit statement by the G7 leaders, which was released about an hour before Trump’s fresh rant, read. For that hour, it seemed like a step toward reconciliation: French President Emmanuel Macron, also at dagger’s point with Trump over tariffs, called the document “good news,” though on a more cautious note he added: “Nevertheless, I do not consider that with a declaration all is obtained and it is obvious that we will have in the coming weeks, the next months, to continue to work.”

On Twitter, the French leader was more assertive about the summit’s success, claiming that “our exchanges have made it possible to restore the truth over trade between Europe and the United States.”

Before Trump’s turnaround, British Prime Minister Theresa May, who Trump snubbed at the summit, strove to reinforce the image of the “special” US-UK relationship. “We work closely with President Trump, and the UK has a very good relationship with the United States,” she said, noting that the two-day summit was filled with “some difficult discussions and strong debate.”

In the run-up to the summit, Trump riled up his fellow world leaders with accusations of unfair trade practices, earning him some flak from both Trudeau and Macron, who even suggested that the G7 could fare as the G6, without the US if need be. During the summit itself, Trump’s behavior seemed almost deliberately disdainful: coming late, leaving early, contradicting others on Russia and suggesting that Canada lift all tariffs on US goods (which elicited a nervous laugh from Trudeau).

Stephen King is a force.

The award-winning author has written dozens of books and short stories, including those that have been adapted into films such as “The Dark Tower.”

In his 2010 memoir, “On Writing,” he shared advice for aspiring authors.

Everyone wants King’s voice on their side — or, more accurately, on their book.

So many people want a few sentences from the renowned author that King has a pile of books yet to be read that he’s named “the guilt table,” writes Alexandra Alter in a New York Times review of Gabriel Tallent’s bestselling debut novel “My Absolute Darling.”

Alter writes that “My Absolute Darling” is so beloved by critics that King offered his endorsement unsolicited, calling the book a “masterpiece.”

Securing that endorsement is even more impressive than it sounds, considering the competition. Here’s Alter:

“Mr. King, who gets so many requests for blurbs that he has a teeming pile of books in his office that he calls ‘the guilt table,’ offered an unsolicited endorsement of ‘My Absolute Darling’ after he tore through an advanced copy of the 400-plus-page novel in three days.

‘It’s a first novel and he’s got everything working,’ Mr. King said. ‘When I read it the first thing I thought was, I couldn’t do this, and I’ve been doing it for 40 years.'”

The existence of a swastika emblazoned anchor in a public park is being defended by a Canadian mayor, after an activist tried to erase the symbols.

The local government of Pointe-des-Cascades, Quebec, has denied the artefact in Parc des Ancres promotes hate and explained how the anchor dates back to before World War II.

Discovered 25 years ago by divers in lakes Saint-Louis and Saint-Francois, the large iron piece, which prominently displays a Nazi symbol, is part of a historical display close to a museum, according to the municipality.

Local mayor Gilles Santerre insisted the community “does not endorse Nazism.”

“Our village has a beautiful community and family spirit and creates gathering events for all the population,” Santerre said in a statement.

“The acres park is an open-air museum so that people can discover the history of our village. To avoid confusion, the city plans to install new plates that will better explain the origin of these anchors.”

It comes after police were called last week to prevent ‘Erasing Hate’ campaigner, Corey Fleischer, from covering up the symbols.

Video of the incident shows Fleischer explaining to officers his reasons for scratching off parts of the swastika’s paint.

“We are not living in the 1800s anymore when this symbol was a sign of peace,” Fleischer later said on Facebook.

“If this swastika anchor was in Montreal’s Mount Royal Park or in New York City’s Central Park as part of its ‘history’ there would be absolute outrage,” he said. “It is up to us as a society to have this swastika anchor removed from this park.”

Conservative provocateur Ann Coulter slammed Sean Hannity in a blistering column on Wednesday, saying the Fox News commentator “would endorse communism” if Donald Trump did.

“Sean Hannity, bless his heart, has the zeal of the late Trump convert,” Coulter wrote in the column on her website. “He would endorse communism if Trump decided to implement the policies of ‘The Communist Manifesto.'”

The two firebrands have been feuding since last week, when Coulter accused Hannity of censoring from his show her comments about Trump’s relationship with Goldman Sachs.

Coulter said she had criticized Trump’s praise for his chief economic adviser Gary Cohn, the former Goldman Sachs president, whom he called one of the “great, brilliant business minds” on his Cabinet during a rally in Iowa last week.

Trump added that he did not want a “poor person” running the economy, and “that’s the kind of thinking we want” — a line Coulter told Hannity she objected to.

“On his show last Thursday, he tried to get me to defend Trump’s “rich person” remarks about Cohn,” Coulter said. “I wish you could see the segment, but, unfortunately, Hannity decided no one would ever see it.”

The pre-recorded segment was cut for time, Hannity said. The host has faced criticism for his unceasingly pro-Trump coverage.

But to Coulter, who bills herself an early Trump supporter, it does no good to blindly praise the president.

“Those of us who have been here for a while … know how to party responsibly,” she said. “The best way we serve the people we admire is to tell them the truth.”

The US Congress has begun the “markup” process to consider budget appropriations for fiscal year 2018, and on Thursday, the House subcommittee overseeing Strategic Forces held a hearing for the National Defense Authorization Act. This bill provides funding for the military, including the Air Force, which oversees efforts to launch spy and communications satellites, as well as other national defense payloads.

As part of the process, Arizona Republican Trent Franks offered an amendment that stated the government should move rapidly to evaluate the potential use of reusable space launch vehicles such as those being flown by SpaceX. Co-sponsored by New Jersey Democrat Donald Norcross, the amendment passed on a voice vote.

This represents a remarkable turnaround for SpaceX and the federal government. After filing a lawsuit against the Air Force three years ago for the right to bid on military launch contracts, the California-based company only began flying military payloads for the government in May. Now lawmakers seem to be warming quickly to the company’s vision of low-cost access to space.

The revision of the Swiss Energy Act was supported by more than 58 percent of the Swiss people as well as by 22 out of 26 cantons, according to the official preliminary results. Only four German-speaking central cantons voted against it, including the canton of Aargau, where three of five currently operational nuclear reactors are located.

The measure was most actively supported by the western Swiss cantons, including the canton of Geneva, where more than 70 percent of local residents voted in favor of the new legislation.

Following its approval, the new law is expected to come into force in early 2018. According to the Swiss government website, it is aimed at reducing energy consumption, increasing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energies such as water, solar, wind and geothermal power, as well as biomass fuels.

Under the law, Switzerland plans to cut its energy consumption almost by half by 2035 as compared to levels seen in 2000 and introduce stricter regulations for vehicle CO2 emissions.

The new legislation also prohibits the construction of any new nuclear power plants on Swiss territory. However, it does not envisage immediate decommissioning of the existing nuclear power reactors, instead allowing them to operate as long as they are deemed safe.

Switzerland’s nuclear stations have open-ended operating licenses, so there is no clear date indicating when they are to be shut down. Each year, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) measures the radioactivity of liquid waste coming out of Switzerland’s nuclear reactors.

The new law also includes providing temporary financial assistance to existing hydropower plants to help them cover their expenses in the view of the low energy market prices. The government program, also known as Energy Strategy 2050, will be implemented in phases, the government says.

The plan earlier received backing of the Swiss Federal Council and Parliament, which both called on citizens to support it. However, the right-wing populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which has the largest faction in the parliament, opposed the strategy, arguing that it would be too expensive and would threaten Switzerland’s energy supply.

The SVP requested the referendum and actively campaigned against the new legislation. “I am very worried about the future,” SVP MP Celine Amaudruz told RTS broadcaster, reacting to the preliminary referendum results.

The outcome of the referendum was praised by the Swiss Green Party. “This is a historic day for the country,” Green Party MP Adele Thorens Goumaz told RTS, adding: “Switzerland will finally enter the 21st century when it comes to energy.”

Switzerland raised the issue of the switch to renewable energy sources and a gradual withdrawal from the nuclear energy program following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. However, an earlier initiative envisaging a gradual shutdown the country’s five nuclear reactors by 2030 was rejected by Swiss voters in November 2016.

Switzerland’s five nuclear power stations currently produce around 35 percent of its electricity.
