It’s been a rough season for Dory Sief. After her hellish experience of being abducted, drugged and tortured throughout, Search Party‘s finale once again found a way to turn her world completely upside down. The season’s last four episodes hit HBO Max Thursday, delivering even more psychological trauma and identity crises than any one person should ever have to endure. But in the final installment — MAJOR Spoiler Alert here! If you aren’t fully caught up, you know what to do — we followed Drew, Elliott and Portia as they spoke at Dory’s funeral (!) and grieved for their friend who perished in the fire set by Chip’s Aunt Lylah (oh, hey, Susan Sarandon!). And for the entire episode, Dory was dead… until she woke up screaming in the back of an ambulance, lungs filled with smoke and ash darkening her face. Naturally, we had a lot of questions for co-creators/EPs Charles Rogers and Sarah-Violet Bliss, who talked to TVLine about that twisty (and twisted!) ending; Portia, Drew and Elliott’s grief; and what a potential Season 5 could look like. TVLINE | That finale! Did you always plan to have a pump-fake of an ending, in terms of Dory actually being alive? Did you discuss any other endings? TVLINE | Oh, I bought it hook, line and sinker! What can you tell us about the multiple Dorys we saw at the funeral and again at the very end? TVLINE | I’m always torn on how I should feel about Portia, Drew and Elliott. Should I pity them? Do I feel for them? Do they deserve everything that’s happened? Or maybe none of that matters because ultimately, it was all in Dory’s head. What’s the takeaway there? TVLINE | So Dory wakes up in an ambulance and is all, “I was dead! I saw everything!” What can we expect from Dory going forward? How will she deal with this trauma? [Editor’s note: Search Party is not yet renewed.]BLISS | We hope we get a Season 5! TVLINE | If the renewals keep coming, how far do you plan on taking these characters? What did you think about Search Party‘s Season 4 finale? Grade the episode and season below, then drop some comments! After nearly 280 adventures in the Land of Ooo, Adventure Time‘s Finn and Jake completed their final quest on Monday in an hourlong event that honored the Cartoon Network series’ incredible history — while offering a glimpse at its mysterious future. TVLine chatted with executive producer Adam Muto for additional closure, but first, a quick recap: After all that build-up, the Great Gum War ended rather quickly, with both sides agreeing to move forward peacefully as a two-kingdom realm. Just when it seemed the worst was over, however, a menacing portal appeared overhead, unleashing GOLB — the ultimate evil, as discovered by Betty and Simon years earlier — on the unsuspecting candy people of Ooo. With only their most trusted allies by their side — including a newly redeemed Fern! — Finn and Jake engaged GOLB’s minions in a final battle, which ended with Betty becoming one with the evil entity in order to sacrifice herself. (We also got our first official Bubblegum-Marceline kiss, which you can read about here.) Sadly, GOLB had reverted the Ice King back to plain ol’ Simon before its defeat, rendering him powerless and alone in Ooo, separated from his true love. As for his mantle, Gunter got a hold of the crown and wished himself to become the new Ice King. Because… why not? Though the episode focused on Finn and his friends, the story of their battle against GOLB was actually being relayed by the future King of Ooo (aka BMO) to a pair of young adventurers named Shermy and Beth — the latter of whom looks like she could be a direct descendant of Jake, while the former could be a future incarnation of Finn. After hearing this tale of bravery, the duo sought out the wreckage of Finn and Jake’s treehouse, where Shermy discovered the tree that Fern became… as well as the powerful sword in its branches! And just like that, a new adventure (time) began. Below, Muto answers more of our burning questions about the series finale, including the clues about Shermy and Beth’s existence that we all (apparently) missed in previous episodes: TVLINE | Bubblegum and Marceline weren’t the only ones who kissed. Can we go ahead and confirm Lumpy Space Princess and Lemongrab as a couple, too? TVLINE | They’d make a great royal couple, especially since she’s now the Lumpy Space… Queen? Was that her coronation in that final montage? TVLINE | She had a much happier ending than, say, Betty. Was there ever talk of ending her and Simon’s story on a higher note? TVLINE | At least Fern got a little redemption. Was that important for you to work in there? TVLINE | Lastly, let’s talk Shermy and Beth: Are you able to say where they come from? Do you even know their full lineage? Time to weigh in: Did the Adventure Time finale live up to your expectations? Which character’s ending surprised you the most? Grade the epic-sode below, then drop a comment with your full review.
ROGERS | We discussed more endings than you’ll ever imagine. We’re really excited about what the ending we arrived at says. The one thing that kept coming up when we were trying to figure out where we wanted Season 4 to go was the idea of a near-death experience. Dory had done so much to her own brain and so much had been done to her brain by the time Season 4 was over that we really liked the idea of taking it all the way to: She’s dead. Lo and behold, by the end, you realize it was a temporary experience.
BLISS | …But we wanted to really sell it, so it felt real.
ROGERS | In this near-death experience, we were able to speak to the idea that Dory has been either integrating or denying different aspects of herself throughout this season. Some of that is intentional and some were ideas we found along the way as we were writing each season. Looking back, it felt like a safe creative thing to say, in terms of how she’s evolved. She was able to collect all of herself in this death experience.
BLISS | This whole season, there’s a lot of themes about identity. Portia plays Dory [in a movie], and Chip dresses up as Lylah, Dory turns into Stephanie when she’s brainwashed… every character is playing with their identity. We’re playing with this idea that you can have these fractured versions of yourself and you can sort of shift who you are based on what you want the world to see you as at any given time. Throughout the season, she’s had to see herself in a certain light, and that was coming together in that final scene.
ROGERS | The idea we were drawn to in portraying this funeral was that this is truly how it would go. So in some strange way, what Dory saw — and of course this isn’t explicit in the show at all, but so far as we understand it — what Dory saw as her own funeral isn’t necessarily through the lens of Dory. We added scenes where the friends are not with Dory, they’re on their own… when they get the box from Chip and stuff like that. There are elements that are supposed to feel objective in showing the friends’ experience. Your takeaway for how you experience them is however you experience it, of course. We liked the idea that you’re seeing how they actually would feel and act at her funeral.
ROGERS | We like that there’s a conclusive energy about Season 4 that, as an ending, exists on its own. If the story was to continue, there’s definitely something to find meaning in about what it would be like to be on the other side of having died.
ROGERS | I think it’s safe to say that the show has gotten more and more extreme, but we don’t want to write it past its welcome. Whether that means Season 4’s the ending or it continues, we want to make sure we always have something smart to say about these characters.

[Laughs] I can’t write their ending. That was set up in the episode where they went on a blind date. We wanted to make sure [their kiss] didn’t come out of nowhere. And, who knows, maybe they’re the perfect pair — they’re both kind of abrasive and loud.
She might still be a princess, but yes, she’s also the queen. We’re pretty loose with our titles. But that was meant to be an ending for her and the other princesses. She was an outsider for a large part. She lived in the woods, and I don’t know why she never moved back. That was her coming back to the fold and accepting responsibility and leadership.
That was something we talked a lot about: How happy of an ending can their story really have? Would that be satisfying or a cop-out? And would something dark feel too hopeless? It was more about finding a way for them to switch roles. She did get what she wanted, but in a Gift of the Magi twist, she became the cursed thing. And now Simon is human and searching for a way to save her.
I think so. He was always a version of Finn, a doppelgänger. So Finn spent a lot of time trying to redeem him. He should be able to find the good in himself. I feel like he did get an ending that felt earned without whitewashing the compromises he went through to become a person. And it was important to us that he still exists — he’s just a tree now!
A lot of that was directly pitched by [writer] Steve Wolfhard. He had this massive headcanon of the Ooo 1000 world. In “Graybles 1000,” you see Marceline’s house covered in Christmas lights, but you don’t see inside. I’m pretty sure Steve knew who was inside. He’s been pitching these sketches of these future versions of these characters for years now. He pitched the Shermy visual a few years ago. There are little nuggets in the [finale] intro to show you what the [future] world is like: You see the Pup Kingdom, you see Gibbon, you see some characters who were only in one scene in Season 8. The crumbs are there for fans to put together.

Notepad, the text editor that ships with Windows, is not a complicated application. For many, this is its major advantage—by having virtually no features, it cannot go wrong—but especially for software developers, it has often proven an annoyance.
That’s because Notepad has traditionally only understood Windows line endings. Windows, Unix, and “classic” MacOS all use different conventions for indicating the end of a line of text. Windows does things correctly: it uses a pair of characters, the carriage return (CR) followed by the line feed (LF). Two characters are needed because they do different things: the CR moves the print head to the start of a line; the LF advances the paper by one line. Separating these is valuable, as it allows for effects such as underlining to be emulated: first print the text to be underlined, then issue a CR, and then print underscore characters.
Unix, however, uses a bare line feed to denote that a new line should be started. Classic MacOS (though not modern macOS) uses a bare carriage return for the same purpose. Given the meaning behind the CR and LF characters, these operating systems are both obviously wrong, but sometimes wrongness is allowed to prevail and persist.

As HBO learned through its prolonged dealings with hackers this summer, the internet is dark and full of spoilers. And as the network’s flagship shows nears its end, the frenzy for spoilers of just how Game of Thrones will conclude will soon reach its peak.
It’s no wonder that HBO will go above and beyond to prevent as many spoilers from hitting the internet as possible. The newest strategy: Game of Thrones is shooting multiple endings of its series finale.
HBO Programming President Casey Bloys told local Pennyslvania newspaper The Morning Call that the network is planning to shoot multiple variations of Game of Thrones season 8’s final episode.
“I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens. You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
It’s an old TV trick that Game of Thrones has used before. Kit Harington has said that the HBO fantasy show shot multiple fake scenes to throw off the local paparazzi during the production of season 7 — with the fake scenes taking up to five hours each to shoot. Game of Thrones may also be taking a cue from The Walking Dead, which shot multiple scenes of the aftermath of the season 6 cliffhanger, turning the hiatus into a guessing game of “Who did Negan kill?” In that case, AMC participated in a somewhat cruel troll of fans, but HBO is likely trying to save fans from themselves.
There’s been no show on TV that has such a delicate balance with spoiler culture, with each season hinging on some game-changing twist or death, starting with the beheading of Sean Bean’s Ned Stark in the first season. Since then, Game of Thrones has only increased the veil of secrecy as the tumult around spoilers has escalated.
The multiple finale variations is a painstaking strategy to avoid spoilers, but it is probably worth it after HBO’s tiresome experience with hackers this summer — who actually weren’t responsible for the majority of the Game of Thrones episode leaks. Ironically, most of those were accidental releases by HBO distributors themselves, which makes us wonder if the network is tamping down on its distribution process in addition to putting its actors through this arduous process. But better safe than sorry.
Game of Thrones season 8 is set to premiere on HBO in late 2018 or early 2019.

After the penultimate season was plagued with spoilers, the HBO fantasy epic will allegedly shoot multiple versions of the big finale.
HBO president Casey Bloys has claimed the producers David Benioff and D.B.Weiss came up with the clever plan in a bid to prevent anyone from knowing the show’s climax.
In a recent chat with Pennsylvania’s Morning Call, Casey said: “I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens.
“You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
This means even the main stars of the show including Kit Harington (who plays Jon Snow), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) will also be kept out of the loop.
It is still unknown when the final season will air but production is expected sooner rather than later as the producers have already completed the scripts.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming will begin in October and could continue as late as August 2018 which means the season will hit screens in 2019.
The HBO President told the publication: “Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take.”
It comes after fans of the long-running show believe they have figured out the Night King’s plans.
One Reddit user believes the leader of the White Walkers is aiming to go to the Riverland and seek out God’s Eye, the biggest lake in the Seven Kingdoms where the pact between the Night King and the First Men was signed.
The user wrote: “Ultimately I think his end goal is to reach the Isles of Faces and use its magical properties to give life to his undead army.”
Game of Thrones season eight is expected to return to screens in 2019.
He used to sling Philly cheesesteaks out of a food truck… but now he might be chowing down on something much different.
Happy Endings star Zachary Knighton has signed on to join the cast of Netflix’s zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet in Season 2, according to our sister site Deadline. It’s a major recurring role, but no details on Knighton’s character have been released yet.
Diet, starring Drew Barrymore as a suburban mom who transforms into a flesh-eating zombie and Timothy Olyphant as her hapless husband, debuted on the streaming service back in February with a 10-episode freshman season. (Will Knighton play her latest victim… or perhaps a fellow flesh-eater?) Netflix ordered a second season in March.
Knighton is best known as food-truck proprietor/V-neck wearer Dave Rose on the cancelled-too-soon ABC comedy Happy Endings, which wrapped up a three-season run in 2013. Since then, he’s starred in Fox’s short-lived sitcom Weird Loners and appeared on The Good Fight, Elementary and The Catch. He also co-starred in Lauren Graham’s recent Fox comedy pilot Linda From HR, which failed to score a series pick-up in May.

Enlarge / It’s hard to tell from this promo image, but this game is a poignant meditation on friendship and death.
It was easier for me to walk away from Persona 3 than I expected. The game about nine friends and a dog—which celebrates its tenth anniversary in the States this year—follows a similar arc to most role-playing games. That means the gang of plucky young people ultimately saves the world. Yet its 21st century characters and setting made Persona 3 far more relatable and endearing to me than the high-flying heroes of Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger. It helps, too, that this was the series’ first game to sport a now-signature blend of dating sim and turn-based dungeon crawling.
Playing Persona 3, I felt I was experiencing the first game designed to let me take my time. Whether that meant meeting up with a friend for kendo practice or hanging out with a couple of elderly used booksellers, there was nearly always something more digestible, recognizable, and less world-shatteringly urgent to do than fighting gods and monsters. It’s the kind of stuff that let me inhabit a game’s world for a bit rather than simply tour through it. Tearing up specters and saving the Earth from supernatural threats is fun, but it’s a bit harder to relate to in a way that feels like my real life.
By the end of the game, I was nearly as attached to the city of Iwatodai and its inhabitants as I’ve ever been to a real place. The downside is that this made it that much harder to eventually say goodbye to those virtual sights I saw and friends I made along the way. What made that goodbye easier was a special, quiet message before the closing credits—one that reminds me how to accept the end of comfort and friendship even today.
