It brought E2EE to several wired models last year.

"We believe we should offer a full range of privacy options to as many customers as possible," a Ring blog post reads. "And we know that different devices make sense for different living situations. That's why we've worked hard to bring this industry-leading privacy feature to as many of our camera and doorbell products as possible."

With E2EE enabled, only you will be able to access videos captured by your Ring camera. Ring and Amazon won't be able to see them. It recently emerged that Amazon has given US law enforcement footage from Ring cameras on several occasions without a court order or user consent. E2EE should prevent that from happening.

Recordings will only be accessible from a single mobile device. According to Ring's white paper, a direct connection is made between the Ring device and the phone over WiFi, with cryptographic keys and identity certificates used to establish trust between the two, and to encrypt and decrypt videos.

There are some tradeoffs for those who use E2EE. You won't be able to access Ring footage on other devices, such as Echo Show. Other features will be disabled, including the Event Timeline, Quick Replies, Alexa Greetings and Bird’s Eye View, which debuted on the Video Doorbell Pro 2 last year.

Elsewhere, Ring is making it easier to save videos when you get rid of one of its devices. Via the Deactivated Device State feature, subscribers will be able to save recordings from the doorbell or camera to their Ring account. Until now, the only officially supported way to retain the videos was by downloading them to a computer. If you cancel your subscription, Ring will delete all the videos and events from your account, but you'll be able to download the recordings first.

On Thursday, the Australian parliament approved a measure that critics say will weaken encryption in favor of law enforcement and the demands of government.

The new law, which has been pushed for since at least 2017, requires that companies provide a way to get at encrypted communications and data via a warrant process. It also imposes fines of up to A$ 10 million for companies that do not comply and A$ 50,000 for individuals who do not comply. In short, the law thwarts (or at least tries to thwart) strong encryption.

Companies who receive one of these warrants have the option of either complying with the government or waiting for a court order. However, by default, the orders are secret, so companies would not be able to tell the public that they had received one.

Apples fires back at Australian encryption bill https://briefnews.eu/apples-fires-back-at-australian-encryption-bill/ https://briefnews.eu/apples-fires-back-at-australian-encryption-bill/#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2018 04:24:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apples-fires-back-at-australian-encryption-bill/

In a seven-page letter to the Australian government, Apple criticized the country’s proposed Access and Assistance Bill 2018. Apple claims, among other complaints, that the legislation raises cybersecurity concerns and give the state power to abuse users’ privacy.

Apple stated, “We encourage the government to stand by their stated intention not to weaken encryption or compel providers to build systemic weaknesses into their products.” Apple explained its grievances with the bill over six bullet points:

  • Overly broad powers that could weaken cybersecurity and encryption
  • A lack of appropriate independent judicial oversight
  • Technical requirements based only on the government’s subjective view of reasonableness and practicability
  • Unprecedented interception requirements
  • Unnecessarily stifling secrecy mandates
  • Extraterritoriality and global impact

Apple’s railing against backdoors (which grant law enforcement access to devices) is not a new development, but their continued battle against backdoors is worth noting. In 2016, Apple fought back when the FBI attempted to compel Apple to unlock the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone. Along with privacy concerns, Apple argues the flipside of such backdoor access is potentially handing hackers keys to the castle. Apple said, “There is profound risk of making criminals’ jobs easier, not harder. Increasingly stronger — not weaker — encryption is the best way to protect against these threats.”

Apple, however, did commend the Australian government for their willingness to work with the company and others, while warning that the bill is still unfit saying, “We appreciate the government’s outreach to Apple and other companies during the drafting of this bill. While we are pleased that some of the suggestions incorporated improve the legislation, the unfortunate fact is that the draft legislation remains dangerously ambiguous with respect to encryption and security.”

The Australian parliament is accepting submissions to the bill’s review until October 12th. TechCrunch uploaded Apple’s full statement, which you can read here.

Tens of thousands of Fortnite players have been infected by malware that hijacks encrypted Web sessions so it can inject fraudulent ads into every website a user visits, an executive with a game-streaming service said Monday.

Rainway CEO Andrew Sampson said in a blog post that company engineers first detected the mass infections last week when server logs reported hundreds of thousands of errors. The engineers soon discovered that the errors were the result of ads that somehow were injected into user traffic. Rainway uses a technique known as whitelisting that permits customers to connect only to approved URLs. The addresses hosting the fraudulent addresses—hosted on the adtelligent.com and springserve.com domains—along with unauthorized JavaScript that accompanied them made it clear the traffic was generated by malware infecting a large number of game players using the Rainway service. Rainway is a cloud-based service that lets people play PC games remotely, similar to PlayStation Now.

“As the errors kept flowing in, we took a glance at what these users had in common,” Sampson wrote. “They didn’t share any hardware, their ISPs were different, and all of their systems were up to date. However, one thing did stand out—they played Fortnite.”

Data-stealing router malware bypasses web encryption https://briefnews.eu/data-stealing-router-malware-bypasses-web-encryption/ https://briefnews.eu/data-stealing-router-malware-bypasses-web-encryption/#respond Wed, 06 Jun 2018 22:56:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/data-stealing-router-malware-bypasses-web-encryption/

A recently discovered strain of router malware appears to be much worse than thought. Cisco Talos has learned that VPNFilter can not only render devices unusable, but can bypass the SSL encryption you often see on the web. A module in the malware intercepts outgoing web requests to turn them into non-secure (that is, basic HTTP) requests, helping it steal sign-ins and other sensitive data when possible. It can also use man-in-the-middle attacks to insert hostile JavaScript into outside websites, and target devices beyond the router itself, such as PCs on the local network.

The rogue software targets many more devices than first thought, too. While a late May report focused on a handful of routers and network storage devices from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear, QNAP and TP-Link, the vulnerability is now known to affect both more models from those brands as well as ASUS, D-Link, Huawei, Ubiquiti, Upvel and ZTE.

Significantly, VPNFilter isn’t just infecting every device it can. Symantec noted that it’s “particularly interested” in targets in Ukraine, suggesting that Russia or another politically motivated actor might be involved.

There are ways to minimize or eliminate the threat. MikroTik and Netgear note that newer firmware updates should protect against VPNFilter, and the FBI has seized a domain the malware used for its command and control system. QNAP has a malware removal tool. However, the scale of the threat is more than a little disconcerting, and there are many people and companies that rarely upgrade their firmware. It’s possible that a new variant could switch to a new domain and infect more devices with little resistance.

Facebook gave a gutsy defence of encryption but admitted it helps ‘bad people to do bad things’ (FB) https://briefnews.eu/facebook-gave-a-gutsy-defence-of-encryption-but-admitted-it-helps-bad-people-to-do-bad-things-fb/ https://briefnews.eu/facebook-gave-a-gutsy-defence-of-encryption-but-admitted-it-helps-bad-people-to-do-bad-things-fb/#respond Tue, 08 May 2018 09:22:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebook-gave-a-gutsy-defence-of-encryption-but-admitted-it-helps-bad-people-to-do-bad-things-fb/ Westminster terror

  • Facebook has defended end-to-end message encryption on WhatsApp and Messenger, despite admitting it helps “bad people do bad things.”
  • The words will be welcomed by those who have concerns about data breaches, but will frustrate law enforcement agencies who believe accessing messages could be key to stopping terror attacks.
  • Facebook said abolishing encryption would “remove an important layer of security for the hundreds of millions of law-abiding people.”

Facebook has given a full-throated defence of end-to-end message encryption, despite admitting that the security service helps “bad people do bad things.”

Days after WhatsApp cofounder Jan Koum quit Facebook amid reports he disagreed with plans to collect user data on the messaging service, Facebook reassured users that encryption isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

WhatsApp users have enjoyed end-to-end message encryption since 2016, while Facebook Messenger users can opt-in to the service. Encryption secures messages so that no one can intercept communications.

Facebook’s defence of encryption will be welcomed by those who have concerns about data breaches, but it is likely to frustrate governments and law enforcement agencies who believe accessing messages could be key to preventing and investigating terror attacks or other crime.

Only last year, the British government demanded access to WhatsApp following the Westminster terror attack, in which aggressor Khalid Masood was active on the service just two minutes before driving into pedestrians.

“We need to make sure our intelligence services have the ability to get into situations like encrypted WhatsApp,” former UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd said at the time.

Gail Kent, a former executive at British National Crime Agency and now Facebook’s global public policy lead on security, admitted that she understood the frustration having seen the debate from both sides of the fence.

“I hear from government officials who question why we continue to enable end-to-end encryption when we know it’s being used by bad people to do bad things. That’s a fair question,” she said in a blog.

But she said there would be a clear trade-off without encryption — a trade-off Facebook is not prepared to make. Kent explained: “It would remove an important layer of security for the hundreds of millions of law-abiding people that rely on end-to-end encryption.”

She added that a “backdoor” for law enforcement agencies to access messages of just those suspected of wrongdoing would be impossible to create without it being “discovered and exploited by bad actors.”

Facebook does hand over some “limited personal information” from WhatApp users when hit with legal requests from public agencies. Kent admitted that this has proved “controversial,” but said it is a compromise when there is a need for both “secure ways to communicate and strong safeguards against everyday threats.”

FSB to give internet messengers 10 days to hand over encryption keys https://briefnews.eu/fsb-to-give-internet-messengers-10-days-to-hand-over-encryption-keys/ https://briefnews.eu/fsb-to-give-internet-messengers-10-days-to-hand-over-encryption-keys/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 15:02:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fsb-to-give-internet-messengers-10-days-to-hand-over-encryption-keys/ Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has ordered data exchange services such as internet messengers to give up the encryption keys for their clients’ correspondence within 10 days of receiving an official request.

The document published on the Russian government’s official web portal on Thursday expands the earlier order for all “organizers of information distribution on the internet network” to present encryption keys if requested by the relevant FSB directorate.

The order was issued after earlier this month Russia’s Supreme Court demanded that popular messenger and blogging platform Telegram hand over encryption keys to its clients’ traffic to the FSB without court warrants.

As they announced the ruling, judges reiterated that the constitutional right to secrecy of correspondence should not be extended to internet messages, as there was no way to ensure that the staff of internet companies had no access to user data.

Soon after the Supreme Court ruling, Russian internet watchdog Roskomnadzor officially warned Telegram that unless it complied with the FSB and the court’s orders, it could be blocked from working in Russia.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov replied with a tweet stating that threats would not work and that the company would always advocate freedom and privacy.

On Thursday, nine days after the court order and the Roskomnadzor warning, the Telegram app went down for users across Europe, the Middle East and Russia. Telegram managers blamed “connection issues” for the crash and said that they hoped to resolve it promptly.

Russia introduced the law regulating data exchange between security services and internet companies in July 2016, in response to the 2015 bombing of a Russian passenger jet in Egypt and the terrorist attacks in Paris. Among other things, it requires communications companies to hand over encryption keys to state security agencies on demand, allowing them to read encrypted data. Non-compliance could cost companies between 800,000 and 1 million rubles ($ 14,000 – $ 17,500) in fines.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
