Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently visited Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, for his birthday, to participate in a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat. Since then, he’s been posting photos and detailed descriptions of his trip on Twitter, encouraging other people to go there if they can.

Now, Dorsey is facing backlash against his supposedly ignorant promotion of Myanmar, where social media platforms — including Twitter and Facebook — allegedly helped fuel a mass genocide, SFGate and other outlets reported.

Muslim MPs have been sent threatening letters which urge people to carry out acid attacks against Muslims, bomb mosques and pull off hijabs. The ‘Punish A Muslim Day’ letters are being investigated by counter-terrorism officers.

The MPs were also sent packages with a “suspicious substance” inside. Three people were hospitalized on Monday and Tuesday as a precaution before the items were deemed not to be hazardous.

Labour MP for Bedford Mohammad Yasin received a package on Monday. His colleagues, Labour MP for Bethnal Green & Bow Rushanara Ali and Labour MP for Ealing Central and Acton Rupa Huq, have both tweeted to say they received similar packages.

The letters advertise “Punish A Muslim Day,” which included a points system of Islamophobic actions and each of their “rewards.” The sickening point-scoring system ranges from 10 points if you “verbally abuse a Muslim” to 2,500 points if you “nuke Mecca.”

Other acts include 50 points for throwing acid in a Muslim person’s face, 100 points for beating up a Muslim, and 250 points for torturing a Muslim using electrocution, skinning or use of a rack. It offers 500 points for butchering a Muslim using a gun, knife or vehicle, and 1,000 points for bombing or burning a mosque.

The messages were also sent to households across London, Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

The sick letter says: “They have hurt you, they have made your loved ones suffer. They have caused you pain and heartache. What are you going to do about it? Are you a ‘sheep’ like the majority of the population?

“Sheep follow orders and are easily led, they are allowing the white majority nations of Europe and North America to become overrun by those who like nothing more than to do us harm and turn our democracies into Sharia-led police states.

“Only you can help turn this thing around, only you have the power. Do not be a sheep!”

Detective Chief Superintendent Martin Snowden, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said the letter is being investigated. “These letters seek to cause fear and offence among our Muslim communities. They also seek to divide us,” he said.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) deleted a tweet on Wednesday evening encouraging people to buy guns for their loved ones on Valentines Day after news of the Florida school shooting broke.

The post, originally tweeted out Wednesday morning by Kimber Firearms, featured a heart-shaped pillow with two guns resting on it. The caption read: “Give your significant other something they’ll appreciate this Valentines Day.”

This lack of market volatility owes much to the steadiness of monetary policy since the depths of the financial crisis. Central banks have kept short-term rates low and have intervened to push down bond yields through their programmes of quantitative easing (QE). The classic method of pricing financial assets is to say they are worth the discounted value of future cashflows; since central banks have kept the discount rate steady, prices have been steady too.

The late Hyman Minsky, an economist, thought that long booms sowed the seeds of their own destruction. He argued that, when the economy was doing well, investors tended to take more risk (such as taking on more debt). These speculative positions are vulnerable to a shock, such as a sudden rise in interest rates, which can turn into a fully fledged crisis.

Iran is currently engulfed in demonstrations: many are protesting the clerical leadership, corruption and increasing costs of living, while counter-protestors are trying to protect the regime. And Telegram finds itself caught in the middle. The chat service has suspended the Amadnews channel after it started encouraging subscribers to lob Molotov cocktails at police, breaking the company’s policy against calls for violence. The move came after Iran telecoms minister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi complained to company founder Pavel Durov, who said Telegram would have to block the channel if it was promoting violence as claimed.

It’s not clear if or when the channel might come back.

The incident highlights the fine line Telegram has to walk. It doesn’t want to be seen as supporting an oppressive government, especially one that wants to spy on Telegram users, but it also has to maintain a consistent anti-violence policy. If it’s going to ban ISIS, it also has to ban activists that explicitly set out to hurt others, even if it ultimately helps governments silence resistance movements. Durov has been quick to object to complaints from Edward Snowden and other that he was facilitating Iran’s crackdown on dissent, noting that “thousands” of Iranian opposition channels are “thriving” on Telegram.

At the same time, this raises questions about just when violence becomes an issue. It’s one thing to encourage unprovoked Molotov cocktail attacks, but what if protesters discuss arming themselves knowing that the government will likely be the first to act? Even with fairly minimal policies like Telegram’s, that’s not always an easy call.

WHAT a difference a year makes. When America’s big banks reported first-quarter earnings for 2016, the mood was glum. The Federal Reserve was proving tardier than hoped in raising interest rates, which held down lending margins. Jitters about the world economy meant rotten results for investment-banking units, in what is usually their best season of the year. Regulators added to the misery: last April the Fed rejected the “living wills”—plans for liquidating lenders that get into trouble—of five of the six largest banks.

This spring bankers are happier. Business perked up last year after that dismal start. Donald Trump’s election in November, accompanied by promises to ginger up the American economy, cut corporate taxes and roll back regulation of finance, gave banks’ shares a lift (see chart). The Fed raised rates in December and again in March and is likely to keep increasing them. And 2017’s first-quarter results have, mostly, seen an improvement—though the cheer was not evenly shared.
