While the Russian government has refused to intervene in Church affairs, Washington, which has little to do with the Orthodox world, reiterated “its strong support” for Ukraine’s Orthodox community “to govern their religion according to their beliefs, free of outside interference.”

“We urge Church and government officials to actively promote these values in connection with the move towards the establishment of an autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Friday.

The American statement came a day after Metropolitan Hilarion, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) external relations department, accused the US of interfering in church affairs.

“America is interested not only in weakening Russia but also in weakening the Russian Church,” Metropolitan Hilarion told Italy’s Il Messaggerо. “We have no doubt that the United States is behind the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s actions. And the haste with which the Patriarchate of Constantinople is now taking its actions indicates that it is carrying out an order from the outside.”

Obtaining a self-governing, autocephalous status for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is an essential part of Kiev’s ongoing policies, aimed at driving a wedge between Russian and Ukrainian peoples that have shared the same faith for over millennia.

After the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on October 11 decided to proceed with granting autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine, and unilaterally lifted an anathema from the heads of its two non-canonical churches, ROC cut ties with Constantinople, calling the verdict of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople “uncanonical and unlawful.”

After Paraguay announced the embassy move plans, Vice President Mike Pence was quick to get President Mario Abdo Benitez on the line. “The Vice President strongly encouraged President Abdo Benitez to follow through with Paraguay’s previous commitment to move the embassy as a sign of the historic relationship the country has maintained with both Israel and the United States,” the White House said in a statement on Thursday.

In May, Paraguay joined a tiny list of countries who have opted to follow US’ suit in moving their embassies in wake of Donald Trump’s recognition of the Holy City as the capital of the Jewish State.

On former President Horacio Cartes’ orders, Paraguay’s embassy officially moved to Jerusalem on May 21, less than a week after United States relocated its mission. Guatemala also relocated their diplomatic mission to the city which the Jewish nation views as its historic capital.

Yet despite the move, which was well-received by the Israeli politicians at the time, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Abdo Benitez, who took office in August, decided to reverse the relocation. In retaliation, Israel announced that it will close its embassy in the South American country.

The new president however rushed to defend his choice stressing that “Paraguay is a country of principles,” which strives to achieve “broad, lasting and just peace” between Israelis and Palestinians by following international law.

Amid massive disapproval from the Jewish community, the Arab League applauded Asuncion’s choice, while the Palestinian Authority branded Paraguay’s decision a “diplomatic achievement,” promising to “immediately” open its representation in the Latin American country.

The Republican Party could score big in the midterms if Mollie Tibbetts, a woman thought to have been murdered by an illegal immigrant, becomes a “household name,” Newt Gingrich has mused, inciting fury on social media.

The longtime GOP sage and former Republican Speaker of the House and presidential candidate contacted Axios to make sure that the outlet was covering the murder of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts. A Mexican citizen living in the US under a false name was charged with her killing, and president Donald Trump and other Republicans have seized on the tragedy to push for tougher immigration laws – while framing the Democrats’ stance on illegal immigration as dangerous.

“If Mollie Tibbetts is a household name by October, Democrats will be in deep trouble,” Gingrich noted. “If we can be blocked by Manafort-Cohen, etc., then GOP could lose [the House] badly.”

“I think that Mollie Tibbetts could be a more important person in SEptember and October, than Paul Manafort ever dreamed of,” Gingrich added in an interview with Fox.

Gingrich’s not-so-subtle midterm strategy was pounced on by social media, with Twitter users decrying his comments as cynical but par for the course.

“Newt is a dumpsterfire of a human being,” Democratic activist Holly O’Reilly tweeted, noting that Tibbetts’ family members have objected to the politicization of her death.

“Gingrich, party before country ALWAYS. Criminals, the lot of ’em,” another user tweeted out.

“Being an obviously bad person has never hindered Gingrich’s reputation or advancement in the GOP as far as I can tell,” prominent #Resistance leader Seth Abramson wrote. Others tweeted out that Gingrich “is THE GOP goblin” and “Trump but with human hair.”

To make matters a bit more prickly, a lawyer representing the suspect, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, asserted in a court filing on Wednesday that the man lives in the US legally. However, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that it had lodged a federal immigration detainer for Rivera, a prelude to deportation, and his former employer claimed that Rivera had provided false identification in order to pass a screening process.

Summer is here in full-force, so it’s time to embrace big, dumb blockbusters. Like The Meg, a movie about Jason Statham fighting a Megalodon shark that just happens to not be extinct, somehow. I’m sure the film will explain this, but really, who cares? We don’t need answers. We just need to see Statham vs. shark. While you wait for The Meg to splash into theaters, watch a new The Meg TV spot below.

The Meg TV Spot

Say what you will about The Meg – the marketing department has been doing a pretty good job selling it. There is no chance in hell a film like this will turn out to be high art, but at the very least, it should deliver on the promise of seeing Jason Statham stare-down a massive shark. Will there be a scene where Statham punches the snark on its big stupid shark face? We can only hope.

The Meg is adapted from Steve Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. The book was cashing-in on the Jurassic Park craze of pitting modern-day humans against prehistoric monsters. The concept – man vs. Megalodon – was inherently cinematic. But it took a while for the book to find its way to the screen. Disney hooked the rights to the book immediately, but the movie floundered in development hell for years. By 2015, Warner Bros. had control of the rights, and hired Eli Roth to helm. Roth eventually sailed away from the project, citing creative differences. Jon Turteltaub, director of the Nic Cage vs. America’s Secrets movie National Treasure, ended up netting the job after Roth left.

And now here we are. Statham plays “expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor”, who is “recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew-and the ocean itself-from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.”

I love that Statham’s character encountered this big-ass shark once before, but apparently no one knows about it. I guess he just kept it a secret for some reason? Smooth move, Statham.

A viral diet that’s been shown to burn 10 times more fat than a standard diet is gaining momentum among Silicon Valley tech workers. And it involves eating a lot of fat.

The ketogenic or “keto” diet — which first became popular in the 1920s as a treatment for epilepsy and diabetes — limits carbohydrates to no more than 50 grams a day, which is the rough equivalent of a plain bagel or a cup of white rice. By comparison, dietary guidelines from the US Department of Agriculture recommend between 225 and 325 grams of carbs a day.

On the keto diet, the body goes into starvation mode and taps its fat stores for fuel. Studies suggest the low-carb, high-fat diet may promote weight loss, improve focus, and stave off age-related diseases. More research is needed on its long-term effects, especially in healthy people.

A small study recently published in the journal Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome found that adults who had been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (a precursor of diabetes) and ate a ketogenic diet had resting metabolic rates (a measure of how much energy your body burns when at rest) over 10 times higher than people who ate a standard diet.

Earlier this year, I spent two months eating bacon, butter, and avocados to see why the keto movement is so popular with tech workers. Here’s what it was like.

I am no stranger to diets. I’ve cut sugar, counted points on Weight Watchers, and swapped solid food for Soylent, a venture-capital-backed meal-replacement shake.

 

But those usually don’t last long. I love food. I’m a chronic snacker.

When I first learned about the keto diet, it caught my interest because dieters could eat seemingly unlimited amounts of healthy fats, like cheese, nuts, avocado, eggs, butter — foods that have high “point values” on Weight Watchers and are severely restricted.

The keto diet reorganizes the building blocks of the food pyramid.

It cuts down carbs to between 20 and 50 grams a day, depending on a person’s medical history and insulin sensitivity. (There are about 30 grams in one apple or one-half of a plain bagel.)

On the diet, healthy fats should account for approximately 80% of a person’s daily calories, while protein should make up about 20%. On average, Americans get about 50% of their calories from carbs, 30% from fat, and 15% from protein, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Walmart has stopped selling a t-shirt that reads, “Rope. Tree. Journalist. SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED.” on its website. The shirt was sold on Walmart’s website through the third-party seller Teespring.

The shirt first gained notice in 2016 after a Reuters photographer took a picture of a man wearing it in Minnesota two days before the presidential election at an event for Trump supporters. Once the photo gained notice on social media, Teespring stopped selling the shirt.

But at some point in the past year, it returned to Teespring’s website and made its way to Walmart’s. It was available for holiday shipping as recently as last week, according to NPR. This time, an email from the Radio Television Digital News Association to Walmart prompted its removal. The email argued that the shirt was insensitive and potentially dangerous, noting the dozens of journalists who have been killed or assaulted this year.

Soon after receiving the email, Walmart stopped selling the shirt. A spokesperson for the company told NPR that the shirt “clearly violated our policy,” and said Walmart would look through the other Teespring merchandise listed on its site to ensure it doesn’t contain hateful messaging. Teespring has also removed the shirt from its site, as its terms of service says, “We do not allow content that promotes or glorifies harm or violence to individuals or others.”

The shirt came at a time of tension between politicians, citizens, and the media. President Trump has been outspoken in his opposition to outlets he believes to be unfair toward him, and a congressional candidate drew scorn for assaulting a journalist at a campaign event in May.

Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
