Mark Daffey

Is there an elephant behind those bushes? What if a buffalo charges? Did I just step in that? A South Africa walking safari can be a hazardous undertaking, writes Mark Daffey.

The feast last night must have been a doozy. Spread out across a dusty clearing in front of us is a huge pile of dung—some fresh and moist, some old and dry. Our Shangaan (part of the Tsonga ethnic group) game ranger, Given, tells us the tiny pellets resembling coffee beans are impala droppings, and there are thousands of them. An entire plantation’s worth, by the looks of it.

Given scoops up a handful and passes  around two beans to every person. He then asks us to stand behind a line he’s drawn in the dirt. “Let me show you a game invented by the Afrikaners,” he says, splitting a dropping open to reveal a compacted inner core. “Now, I want you to place one on your tongue.”

You what?

My moment of truth arrives. With an almighty heft, I launch my projectile towards the heavens, expecting it to follow a graceful ark through the sky before falling back to earth some meters away. The reality, as the small ball of poo rolls off my chin and onto my shoes, is a little less impressive.

RELATED: You can now virtually ‘hike’ all of South Africa’s national parks

It’s around about this time that I start to think about there being way too much interaction with animal poo for my liking. I prefer to observe it from a distance. But on this leisurely morning walking safari around Greenfire Game Lodge, inside Balule Nature Reserve in South Africa’s northeastern Limpopo Province, I’m becoming so familiar with examining faeces that I’m starting to wonder if we’re marching through a stool’s paradise. So far we’ve handled, smelled, tasted, stepped on and spat wild animal scat. All we haven’t done is ingest it, and that’s a line I just went too close to crossing.

Already we’ve stopped beside elephant deposits so that Given could talk about traditional Shangaan healers using smoke from burning mucks to relieve headaches, and so he could tell us how elephant dung tea is used to cure constipation. How cholera is avoided must be another story.

Not if our guides can help it, it turns out. They’re fine with showing us impalas and giraffes and kudus and waterbucks—all of which we see. And they’ll point out feathered species like hornbills and red-crested kurans. Vultures too.

They’ll happily inform us about the protective instincts of termites around an earthen fortress several meters high and burrowing twice as far underground. Plus, they’ll dig out ant lions from the dust and try to entice baboon spiders from their subterranean lairs.

RELATED: Why is nobody hiking Africa’s spectacular secret summits?

And that’s all good. Fascinating, in fact. But as far as bigger, deadlier animals go, that’s another matter entirely.

During our pre-departure briefing we’d specifically been told we’d be avoiding anything that could harm us. Elephants, rhinos and buffaloes were all off-limits. And without saying as much, we also knew that lions sat firmly among that group of animals to steer clear of. Since a sizeable pride was known to be hanging around a waterhole a few hundred meters upstream in the otherwise barren Mohlabetsi Riverbed, Given had deliberately led us in the opposite direction.

Instead, we concentrated on the smaller creatures of the African bush, training our ears to listen for the shrill of a Natal francolin or for the grating call of lilac-breasted rollers. We learned about the medicinal properties and practical uses of various plants, such as feathering Magic Guarri branches to make bushman’s toothbrushes. And we stopped when our guides pointed out leopard and hyena prints in the dirt.

Our route has almost entirely steered away from the riverbed, where we might surprise buffaloes resting in the sand. Maybe lions are lying in the shade of a marula tree. Or perhaps a leopard is stretched out along an overhanging branch.

But we must nevertheless cross the riverbed to return to the lodge, and sprinkled all over the sand is a scatological minefield that—for a change—we tiptoe around. The culprits? Elephants that bore into the sand to tap the sweet-tasting waters welled beneath the river.

By the time we’ve trudged back to our lodge high on the riverbanks, we’re sweaty and hungry. Breakfast is ready and face towels handed around. “How was your walking safari?” we’re asked.

“Full of shit,” jokes one of our crew.

No truer words were spoken.

Cool Stuff: Dan Mumford’s Trippy Art Pays Tribute to ‘Close Encounters,’ ‘Gremlins’ & More https://briefnews.eu/cool-stuff-dan-mumfords-trippy-art-pays-tribute-to-close-encounters-gremlins-more/ https://briefnews.eu/cool-stuff-dan-mumfords-trippy-art-pays-tribute-to-close-encounters-gremlins-more/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 07:49:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cool-stuff-dan-mumfords-trippy-art-pays-tribute-to-close-encounters-gremlins-more/ Gallery 1988 - Dan Mumford - Close Encounters of the Third Kind

With the plethora of prints out there paying tribute to our favorite movies and TV shows, it’s always nice to have an artist whose style is uniquely their own. That’s why we love Dan Mumford so much.

We’ve featured plenty of Dan Mumford’s work before, but now he has a solo show coming to Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles this weekend with a whole new slate of pieces paying tribute to the likes of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Gremlins, Dune, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze and more. Check out some of the Dan Mumford artwork below.

Here’s a sneak preview of pieces from Dan Mumford’s Gallery 1988 show Chroma from io9:

Gallery 1988 - Dan Mumford - Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Gallery 1988 - Dan Mumford - Labyrinth
Gallery 1988 - Dan Mumford - Dune
Gallery 1988 - Dan Mumford - TMNT 2
Gallery 1988 - Dan Mumford - Gremlins

Though we can recognize Mumford’s style a mile away, the artist himself says, “I don’t really know how to categorize it.” As for what we can expect from the rest of the show (which has a total of 19 new pieces), Mumford offered this:

“This show is built mainly around classics and films that really inspired me when I was younger,” he said. “Things that filled me with awe at their visuals or have a special place in my memory. When it comes to creating a piece I always rewatch the subject in hand, and try and work out what is important to the viewer, what relationships can we utilize, what characters, I go quite in depth in a way, it’s normally not just about the visual.”

Dan Mumford’s show opens at 7pm PT on December 8 at Gallery 1988 is Los Angeles. The show will then remain on display through December 30. The pieces not shown here will be released online this weekend and will be available for purchase as well. For information on the gallery, head to Gallery 1988’s website here.

The responses from Alabama GOP officials on Roy Moore’s alleged sexual encounters are bizarre https://briefnews.eu/the-responses-from-alabama-gop-officials-on-roy-moores-alleged-sexual-encounters-are-bizarre/ https://briefnews.eu/the-responses-from-alabama-gop-officials-on-roy-moores-alleged-sexual-encounters-are-bizarre/#respond Fri, 10 Nov 2017 03:52:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-responses-from-alabama-gop-officials-on-roy-moores-alleged-sexual-encounters-are-bizarre/ roy mooreAP Photo/Brynn Anderson

  • Several women have alleged that the Republican nominee for Alabama senator, Roy Moore, initiated sexual encounters with them several decades ago when they were underage.
  • The responses from Alabaman GOP officials have reportedly ranged from outright denial, to alleging the accusers were operatives from the Democratic Party.

GOP officials from Alabama have been offering startling and occasionally bizarre responses when asked by reporters about the allegations that Roy Moore, the Republican nominee for Alabama senator, had sexual encounters with underaged girls nearly 40 years ago.

Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale contacted numerous GOP officials from the state, many of which either outright denied the claims, or accused the accusers of being Democratic operatives.

“It was 40 years ago,” Alabama Marion County GOP chair David Hall reportedly said to Dale. “I really don’t see the relevance of it. He was 32. She was supposedly 14. She’s not saying that anything happened other than they kissed.”

“There’s nothing wrong with a 30-year-old single male asking a 19-year-old, a 17-year-old, or a 16-year-old out on a date,” Hall continued.

According to The Post report, a woman named Leigh Corfman said that in 1979, Moore, then a 32-year-old district attorney, approached her in an Alabama courtroom and got her number. He later called the 14-year-old and drove her to his house, where, according to the report, he removed her clothes and touched her through her bra and underwear. Corfman also said that, in one interaction, Moore gave her alcohol.

Alabama Bibb County Republican chairman Jerry Pow suggested his support for Moore would not unwaver so long it was for the greater good of the party.

“I would vote for Judge Moore because I wouldn’t want to vote for [Democratic nominee Doug Jones],” Pow said, according to Dale. “I’m not saying I support what he did.”

Others took a more combative stance against the accusations.

“It does not really surprise me,” Alabama Mobile County GOP chairman John Skipper said. “I think it is a typical Democratic – Democrat – ploy to discredit Judge Moore, a sincere, honest, trustworthy individual.”

In one particularly strange instance, Alabama Covington County GOP Chairman William Blocker told Dale that he thought Democrats convinced the women in the report to lie about Moore. When Dale pointed out that Corfman was a Trump supporter, he said that’s the “typical background” of someone Democrats would use for such a gambit.

“If they said she was a Hillary supporter, then she’d be more dismissed by the local voters here in the state of Alabama. You’d have to paint her as a Trump supporter to be of any credibility,” Blocker said.

Three women other than Corfman were included in The Post’s report, who told the newspaper that Moore had pursued relationships with them as teenagers between the ages of 16 and 18. The women said Moore did not engage in sexual conduct with them.

Read some of the GOP officials’ comments here:

“I would vote for Judge Moore because I wouldn’t want to vote for Doug,” he says. “I’m not saying I support what he did.”

“I know that 14-year-olds don’t make good decisions,” he adds.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o speaks out about her shocking encounters with Harvey Weinstein https://briefnews.eu/oscar-winner-lupita-nyongo-speaks-out-about-her-shocking-encounters-with-harvey-weinstein/ https://briefnews.eu/oscar-winner-lupita-nyongo-speaks-out-about-her-shocking-encounters-with-harvey-weinstein/#respond Fri, 20 Oct 2017 03:33:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oscar-winner-lupita-nyongo-speaks-out-about-her-shocking-encounters-with-harvey-weinstein/ lupita nyongoMichael Buckner/Getty Images

  • Lupita Nyong’o has detailed her numerous encounters with Harvey Weinstein over several years.
  • Harvey Weinstein is accused of sexually harassing dozens of actresses and has been fired from his company.
  • Nyong’o felt forced to give Weinstein a massage at his home while his children were in another room.

Lupita Nyong’o has added her name to the growing list of Hollywood actresses that Harvey Weinstein is accused of sexually harassing.

In an op-ed for the New York Times, Nyong’o thanked other women for coming forward with their stories and detailed her encounters with Weinstein over the years, including a massage incident at his home while his young children were in another room.

“As actors we are paid to do very intimate things in public. That’s why someone can have the audacity to invite you to their home or hotel and you show up,” wrote Nyong’o who starred in “12 Years a Slave”, for which she won an Oscar, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Nyong’o first met Weinstein at a dinner in 2011 while she was still studying at the Yale School of Drama. One of her table-mates warned her “He is a good man to know in the business, but just be careful around him.”

Not long after, Weinstein invited Nyong’o out to lunch and a film screening at his home. The lunch was uncomfortable with Weinstein appearing highly irritated that Nyong’o didn’t want to order alcohol and demanded the waiter “Get her what I tell you to get her.”

But it was the situation at Weinstein’s home, where he offered to Nyong’o a massage, that echoes other stories of his sexual harassment.

“We got to his home after lunch and I met his domestic staff and his young children. He took me on a brief tour of the house before he rounded us all up in the screening room to watch the film.”

“I settled in for the film, but about 15 minutes in, Harvey came for me, saying he wanted to show me something. I protested that I wanted to finish the film first, but he insisted I go with him, laying down the law as though I too was one of his children. I did not want another back-and-forth in front of his kids, so I complied and left the room with him. I explained that I really wanted to see the film. He said we’d go back shortly.

Harvey led me into a bedroom — his bedroom — and announced that he wanted to give me a massage. I thought he was joking at first. He was not. For the first time since I met him, I felt unsafe. I panicked a little and thought quickly to offer to give him one instead: It would allow me to be in control physically, to know exactly where his hands were at all times.

Part of our drama school curriculum at Yale included body work, using massage techniques on one another to understand the connection between body, mind and emotion, and so I felt I could rationalize giving him one and keep a semblance of professionalism in spite of the bizarre circumstance. He agreed to this and lay on the bed. I began to massage his back to buy myself time to figure out how to extricate myself from this undesirable situation. Before long he said he wanted to take off his pants. I told him not to do that and informed him that it would make me extremely uncomfortable. He got up anyway to do so and I headed for the door, saying that I was not at all comfortable with that. “If we’re not going to watch the film, I really should head back to school,” I said.

I opened the door and stood by the frame. He put his shirt on and again mentioned how stubborn I was. I agreed with an easy laugh, trying to get myself out of the situation safely. I was after all on his premises, and the members of his household, the potential witnesses, were all (strategically, it seems to me now) in a soundproof room.”

Nyong’o saw Weinstein a few more times over the following years but one dinner stands out:

“Before the starters arrived, he announced: “Let’s cut to the chase. I have a private room upstairs where we can have the rest of our meal.” I was stunned. I told him I preferred to eat in the restaurant. He told me not to be so naïve. If I wanted to be an actress, then I had to be willing to do this sort of thing. He said he had dated Famous Actress X and Y and look where that had gotten them.”

Nyong’o says she is now interested in “combating the shame we go through that keeps us isolated and allows for harm to continue to be done”.

The Keystone Pipeline Encounters New Challenges — and New Faces https://briefnews.eu/the-keystone-pipeline-encounters-new-challenges-and-new-faces/ https://briefnews.eu/the-keystone-pipeline-encounters-new-challenges-and-new-faces/#respond Thu, 24 Aug 2017 09:42:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-keystone-pipeline-encounters-new-challenges-and-new-faces/ Central Nebraska is a westward trellis of tiny towns, each 10 miles or so from the next, built to service the steam engines that once fueled American manifest destiny. In between are interminable tracts of land, soybean and corn country, including the farm of Jim Carlson, whose family recently received an award for having seeded thousands of acres for more than a century.

This morning, the 63-year-old Trump voter is wearing a long-sleeve T-shirt that reads “Pipeline Fighter #NOKXL.” He confesses his conversion came late. Back when the original proposed path for the pipeline didn’t cross his land, he believed, like many of his neighbors, that it was “good for America.” But after doing some research — and learning of a change in plans that had the tar sands oil jutting through a 3,800-foot stretch of his property — he says he changed his mind, rejecting a $ 307,000 offer from TransCanada and erecting a 2.8-kilowatt solar panel in the midst of his cornstalks. Now Carlson frets about the threat of global warming, riffing on the “frogs in a pot” line from Al Gore’s documentary on climate change An Inconvenient Truth.

Pipeline 11

He is just one of the many disparate faces of opposition forming against the Keystone pipeline in Nebraska, the veritable last stand for activists who have raged against the controversial pipeline for years. Earlier this month, grannies from Kansas City were bused in by the Sierra Club, joining African-American protesters and Native American water protectors on horseback in Lincoln, where a series of state Public Service Commission hearings had begun. And while the national zeitgeist against the pipeline has been mostly environmental, the opposition here in the Cornhusker State has been joined by local farmers and ranchers who are fearful of poisoning their lands and skeptical of foreign companies claiming they can seize their property without a fight.

Then there are those who would discount their concerns. TransCanada argues the pipeline will bring jobs and tax riches to these plains, although residents note that most of those gigs will be in construction and, therefore, fleeting. Although State Senator Jim Smith says he is sensitive to property-rights concerns, he notes the environmental cost of not approving the pipeline would be worse: “The oil is going to be moved. It’s being moved today on railcars. The pipeline is a safer, certainly more efficient, means of transporting oil.”

The debate isn’t even settled on Carlson’s farm. Against a bleating chorus of moos, Luke, Jim’s 36-year-old son, expresses skepticism about his father’s worries over climate change. And while Luke is no fan of TransCanada’s attempts to run pipe through their land — he believes weeds that will sprout in its wake will harm their crop — he feels Jim should have bargained for, and accepted, a bigger payout. “I don’t think there’s anything to do to stop it,” Luke says.

A quick lesson in fan etiquette: If you run up to a Game of Thrones cast member on the street… you should at least make sure you know their character’s name first.

In the video above, TVLine asks the stars of HBO’s fantasy hit to tell us about their most memorable fan encounters, and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) recalls being approached by a forgetful fan: “I saw his eyes sort of panic as he realized he didn’t remember the name of my character.” The guy finally came up with, “Are you John Frost?” (Close, but no cigar, buddy.)

Plus, Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand) remembers getting an unsolicited kiss from an overeager viewer; Gemma Whalen (Yara Greyjoy) says when she’s out with co-star Alfie Allen, she’s always the one who gets asked to take the photo; and Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos) recalls getting a rock star’s welcome when he traveled to a fan event in Brazil: “It’s like being in One Direction or something.”

We didn’t even have to say so much as “trick or… ,” and still, we got an early Halloween treat at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday: a brand-spanking-new trailer for Season 2 of Stranger Things.

As we’d been forewarned about the Netflix hit’s fresh episodes (dropping Friday, Oct. 27), the clip confirms what Noah Schnapp (Will) called the “darker and more eerie” tone of the series’ sophomore season. Peppered with totally excellent ’80s nods (Dragon’s Lair!), the video also gives us our first glimpse of this season’s ginomrous, omnipedal threat in action and hints at how Eleven will return to the fold.

Per the show’s official synopsis, Season 2 will find the residents of 1984 Hawkins contending with something far scarier than leg warmers and Kajagoogoo — “a bigger, [more] sinister entity” than even the demagorgon. New additions to the cast include Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) and Will Chase (Nashville) as the patriarch of the new family in town.

Press PLAY on the video above to check out the trailer, then hit the comments. On a scale of 1 (I’m in no hurry) to 10 (Must. Watch. Now!), how eager are you to binge Season 2?

Paranormal News: ‘We Burn You,’ British Paranormal Team Encounters Demonic Presence In Cemetery [Video] https://briefnews.eu/paranormal-news-we-burn-you-british-paranormal-team-encounters-demonic-presence-in-cemetery-video/ https://briefnews.eu/paranormal-news-we-burn-you-british-paranormal-team-encounters-demonic-presence-in-cemetery-video/#respond Mon, 23 Jan 2017 16:37:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paranormal-news-we-burn-you-british-paranormal-team-encounters-demonic-presence-in-cemetery-video/ Image of a cemetery, as featured in paranormal news

Today’s paranormal news features a frightening brush with what appears to be a demonic presence in a church cemetery in the United Kingdom. The paranormal team from Dorset Ghost Investigators were researching at the cemetery they state is one of the most haunted in the U. K., when they captured replies to their questions that would make the average person’s skin crawl in their video “OMG It’s Here With Us.” Actually, the paranormal footage would make anyone’s skin crawl.

The team, Glen and Ahmed, were definitely on a paranormal hot spot for this video. Throughout the shoot, the two were surrounded by noises, including a dreadful sound of heavy steps, and with other paranormal phenomena. The two received multiple frights right from the beginning, and as the news progresses, the reason why becomes clear.

In the opening sequence, Glen begins with an electromagnetic frequency meter. The idea being that as a ghost draws near, the paranormal investigator will be able to see the lights on it become more active and it is commonly seen in the paranormal news. As the lights on his meter become more active, one of the two thanks what appears to be a paranormal entity for coming closer. Perhaps the thank you was taken to heart, because after that, things progressively either improve, for the braver viewers, or the news degenerates into a frightening tale of horror, depending on the lens through which one views the paranormal footage.

At one point during the video, Glen jumps because he sees a paranormal entity over Ahmed’s right shoulder. Ahmed naturally reacts and the scare that both of them experience is quite comical. It’s comical only for a moment because at that point, the team reveals the news that while they were downstairs, someone, or something paranormal turned off the infrared settings on their camera at the top of the stairs.

Throughout the episode, both investigators see and hear things that don’t add up. At one point, they silence themselves while speculating about the sounds of heavy footsteps. In that moment the heavy footsteps continue, and it certainly doesn’t sound like a storm shutter, or other mundane possible explanations. It sounds like someone, or a paranormal entity, is walking downstairs to join them.

At another point, the two are speaking to the paranormal entity that they saw, and while Ahmed is speaking, Glen points out that the EMF is blinking. Ahmed adds that the creepy part is that it seems as if the two are being watched, if not outright followed by whatever is there. And really, that is a feeling that even the viewer gets as the two are working.

While there is no firm set of rules for paranormal investigators, one good guideline might be that when a paranormal entity calls a person by name, that person should pay attention. So when the entity says “Glen,” the team looks surprised. What follows afterward is beyond spooky, and definitely worthy of the news.

The video, which is included on this page, ceases to catalog a routine paranormal investigation and crosses over into something much darker. It’s important to bear in mind that at this point in the video, the team has faced a barrage of sensory stimulation from sight, sound, feeling, and even that innate paranormal sense that indicates someone or something is watching. But as mentioned in the title of this article, one segment of the video features statements that are not benign.

In order to save the spoilers, it is sufficient to say that the conversation between investigators and the paranormal entity sounds like a chat at the gates of hell. It is no coincidence, or so it appears, that things went off the rails conversationally when Ahmed brought up the subjects of heaven and hell, and inquired as to with whom the two were speaking. Paranormal news is filled with similar anecdotes. Mentioning the word “god” was also a catalyst. Whatever they found in that cemetery doesn’t seem like a cordial and welcoming paranormal entity.

“We burn you.” Indeed, that paranormal entity might be able to back up that threat. One can only hope that the team stays clear of that paranormal entity in the future. It’s bad news.
