Doping battle leaves Groves ‘emotionally drained’ https://briefnews.eu/doping-battle-leaves-groves-emotionally-drained/ https://briefnews.eu/doping-battle-leaves-groves-emotionally-drained/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 20:03:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/doping-battle-leaves-groves-emotionally-drained/ SHE may have beaten a FINA doping panel ban but Rio Olympic swimming medallist Madeline Groves may still miss this week’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games selection trials.

Australia head coach Jacco Verhaeren said the champion butterflier had entered the four-day trials starting on Wednesday but it remained to be seen whether Groves contested them after a tough lead-up.

“I think with her we will see on the day,” Verhaeren said of the Rio 200m butterfly silver medallist’s chances.

Groves, 22, had to clear her name to contest the trials after facing suspension for missing three drug tests in 12 months.

Last October she escaped a ban when she successfully argued to the FINA doping panel that her third strike should not count because WADA testers did not do enough to find her.

Verhaeren said it had taken an emotional toll on Groves and had disrupted her preparation.

Adding to her anxiety before fronting the FINA doping panel, Dolphins teammates Thomas Fraser-Holmes and Jarrod Poort were hit with 12 month bans for the same offence.

Then Groves underwent surgery late last year to treat endometriosis, a painful condition where a lining in the uterus is found on another part of the body.

“There is a bit of a question mark (about Groves), she obviously had a very different preparation,” Verhaeren said.

“She had to deal with being on three strikes, which is obviously very difficult.

“We are very happy that it was proven that she wasn’t guilty of that, but as you can imagine emotionally it is draining.

“It puts you in a position where working hard and dealing with that is very difficult so she definitely started her preparation a bit later so let’s see where she is at.”

Verhaeren did not want to touch on Groves’ health battle but said the butterflier was back in the pool training.

The Dolphins mentor said they could not afford to push Groves ahead of the Gold Coast Games otherwise they risk burnout ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“It’s difficult to tell what level she is at but she is back in the water and training – she can look forward now,” Verhaeren said.

“(But) we got to take it easy with her and at the end of the day she needs to make a decision to get over a couple of issues – let’s hope that’s the case.”

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

  • Kate Upton recently took to social media to accuse Paul Marciano, a co-founder of Guess, of sexual and emotional harassment.
  • In the midst of these allegations, Guess announced Jennifer Lopez as the face of the company’s latest campaign.

Kate Upton is amongst an exclusive set of blonde models who had their careers made by a Guess campaign. But now, she’s taken to social media to speak out against Paul Marciano, a co-founder of the company.

Upton doesn’t specify an incident, but says Marciano “shouldn’t be allowed to use his power in the industry to sexually and emotionally harass women.” It’s unclear if Upton was among the allegedly harassed women; others responded to Upton’s Twitter post noting they, too, had heard of or witnessed misconduct from Marciano.

Here’s why everyone at Sundance is talking about the emotionally charged movie ‘Blindspotting’ https://briefnews.eu/heres-why-everyone-at-sundance-is-talking-about-the-emotionally-charged-movie-blindspotting/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-why-everyone-at-sundance-is-talking-about-the-emotionally-charged-movie-blindspotting/#respond Sat, 20 Jan 2018 04:49:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-why-everyone-at-sundance-is-talking-about-the-emotionally-charged-movie-blindspotting/ blindspottingSundance Institute

  • “Blindspotting” is a powerful look at a race and class.
  • It stands out because of its well done use of comedy, drama, and rap.

The Sundance Film Festival is where movies that challenge the audience get their fair shake, and “Blindspotting,” the debut feature of director Carlos López Estrada, is exactly that.

The movie is a racially-charged powder keg that uses comedy, drama, and rap to give the audience a journey through the complicated lives of two friends living in West Oakland.

Colin (Daveed Diggs, who cowrote the screenplay with Estrada) is days away from completing his probation and is trying to stay on the straight-and-narrow. However, his lifelong friend Miles (Rafael Casal) is not the best influence on him as he walks around carrying a gun and always seems to get Colin involved in things that he doesn’t want to do.

The movie’s foundation is built on contrasts. Colin is black and Miles is white. West Oakland has a fan base of rowdy Oakland Raiders fans and stylish Golden State Warrior fans. The city is growing more and more gentrified. Even on the marquee of the local theater it has a unique lineup coming soon: rapper Too Short and rock band Third Eye Blind.

And it’s through these differences that Estrada lays down the struggle Colin is going through in his life. He isn’t just shackled by the label of “convicted felon,” but also the fear of the police — after he witnesses a police officer shooting an unarmed black man running from him. Then there’s his on-again-off-again girlfriend Val (Janina Gavankar), who he’s trying to show he’s changed since getting out of prison but can still see she can’t let go why he was put there. The only comfort is with his best friend Miles, who sports a gold grill and tattoos.

A lot of the movie is a fun buddy comedy with the two dealing with entertaining situations, like an Uber driver with lots of guns, trying to sell hot-irons at a beauty salon, as they navigate through Oakland.

But there’s an unspoken uneasiness about them as well, especially since Colin has gotten out of prison, that finally comes to ahead by the end of the movie. Whenever you think you’ve figured out this movie, something happens that pulls the rug right from you.

The strengths of “Blindspotting” is its commentary on race and class through the use of comedy and use of rapping in two powerful scenes. Where it falls short at times is when it becomes too dramatic. When the message is lost through raw anger.

But perhaps that was Estrada’s intention all along. To give the audience raw emotion because that’s what most of us live through every day.

“Blindspotting” is seeking distribution.

Here’s how to emotionally manipulate your family with alcohol this holiday https://briefnews.eu/heres-how-to-emotionally-manipulate-your-family-with-alcohol-this-holiday/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-how-to-emotionally-manipulate-your-family-with-alcohol-this-holiday/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2017 06:51:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-how-to-emotionally-manipulate-your-family-with-alcohol-this-holiday/

When it comes to engineering the fickle emotions of humans, alcohol can do it all. It’s raised for successes and downed in sorrow. It can energize and relax us. It temporarily erases regrets while creating new ones. It’s liquid courage and a downer. It can smooth a first date or conjure tears alone. And this holiday—as with every holiday—it’s likely to both smother and ignite family blow-ups.

But not every drink offers the same mood maneuvering powers, according to a new study in BMJ Open. Sifting through drinking survey responses of nearly 30,000 people from 21 countries, researchers found that drinkers turn to different types of alcohol for different moods and purposes.

For instance, about 53 percent of respondents thought that red wine relaxed them, and 60 percent reported it made them sleepy. So, if you’re looking for a pacifier for any hot-headed in-laws this holiday, maybe turn to a mellow merlot. For your more enjoyable guests, go with a cocktail. Nearly 60 percent of respondents felt that spirits both energized them and boosted their confidence. And 42 percent said it made them feel sexy. But maybe keep the martinis away from that hot-headed relative—nearly 30 percent of the survey takers thought that spirits made them aggressive.

Tin Man review: A short but emotionally charged novel https://briefnews.eu/tin-man-review-a-short-but-emotionally-charged-novel/ https://briefnews.eu/tin-man-review-a-short-but-emotionally-charged-novel/#respond Fri, 04 Aug 2017 02:19:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tin-man-review-a-short-but-emotionally-charged-novel/

Tin Man by Sarah Winman Tinder Press, £12.99

The novel opens with a young pregnant woman, Dora Judd, winning a copy of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers in a raffle in 1950. She chooses the painting because to her it offers “Freedom. Possibility. Beauty”.

Her philandering husband wants her to pick the bottle of whisky and her gesture is an act of defiance, humiliating him in front of his friends. This is the prologue to a novel then divided into three parts, two seen through the eyes of Dora’s son Ellis and one through those of Ellis’s childhood friend Michael.

Almost every contemporary novel seems to switch back and forth in time rather than following a linear narrative and Tin Man is no exception. The structure works well here, however, painting a layered portrait of love and loss, of friendship and misunderstanding.

Len Judd works at the Cowley car plant in Oxford and expects his son Ellis to follow him there to “a job for life”.

Dora wants a different future for Ellis and encourages his interest in art. She also encourages his friendship with Michael, the grandson of the local greengrocer, a quicksilver, imaginative boy who is the same age as Ellis. But Dora’s death from cancer leaves Ellis no protection from his father and he is forced to leave school at 16 and start work at the car plant.

His mother’s painting is also taken down. We meet Ellis first when he is 46, still working at the car plant and mourning the death of his wife Annie in a car crash five years earlier. Numb with grief he chooses to work night shifts which seal him off from normal human contact.

But when he is knocked over and his wrist is broken in a bike accident on Cowley Road, Ellis finds time and space to think again about Annie and Michael and about the trio’s intense friendship which helped him to make sense of his world.

He reaches a better understanding of his parents’ marriage and finds sympathy for his father’s cheerful and kindly mistress whom he rejected at his mother’s funeral. He also wants to find out more about the mysterious disappearance and return of Michael, the third partner on whom he and Annie relied. Set against the car plant in Oxford is the warmth of the south of France which has resonance for both Michael and Ellis.

It connects them with their own feelings, the nature of their relationship and with Dora’s painting which represented the possibility of beauty to two young boys. Winman conjures up a sense of the heat, scents and vegetation of Provence in this short but emotionally charged novel.

How Beyond Verbal hopes to make Siri and Alexa emotionally intelligent https://briefnews.eu/how-beyond-verbal-hopes-to-make-siri-and-alexa-emotionally-intelligent/ https://briefnews.eu/how-beyond-verbal-hopes-to-make-siri-and-alexa-emotionally-intelligent/#respond Wed, 21 Jun 2017 19:53:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-beyond-verbal-hopes-to-make-siri-and-alexa-emotionally-intelligent/

An Israeli startup specializing in analyzing human emotion and traits based on voice is opening up its technology to help artificial intelligence (AI) assistants — such as Siri and Alexa — understand people’s moods by listening to how they sound when they speak.

Founded out of Tel Aviv in 2012, Beyond Verbal has been building on decades of emotion analytics research with its own studies, which have been carried out in conjunction with notable organizations including the Mayo Clinic, the University of Chicago, Scripps, and Hadassah Medical Center. Its data gathering has led to the collation of more than 2.5 million “emotion-tagged voices” across 40 languages. The company’s technology doesn’t consider the content or context of the spoken word, but instead looks for signs of anxiety, arousal, anger, and other emotions through examining the intonation in a person’s voice.

Though the technology is still in its infancy, potential use cases include a call center improving relationships with its customers by analyzing their mood during calls or, in the health realm, a provider evaluating someone’s mental wellbeing. And research is also ongoing to establish whether it can effectively be used to detect physical conditions like heart problems.

Siri gets smart?

Today marks a notable evolution for Beyond Verbal as it looks to introduce its emotion analytics to the virtual personal assistant (VPA) realm via a new API for developers.

While Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are improving all the time at understanding your words — “Hey Alexa, play me a song by The Beatles” — they’re not so adept at recognizing your mood. And that is the ultimate goal of Beyond Verbal’s new API: It wants to bring emotional intelligence to digital assistants.

“Today’s digital world is rapidly transforming the way we interact with our technology and each other,” said Yuval Mor, CEO at Beyond Verbal. “Virtual private assistants have begun to take on a personalized experience. We are very excited for this next step in fusing together the breakthrough technology of AI and Beyond Verbal’s Emotions Analytics, providing unique insight into personalized tech and remote monitoring.”

So… how could this be used in reality? And why would an Amazon Echo device ever need to know what mood you’re in?

Given that Alexa and Co. can now power countless third-party voice-enabled services, Beyond Verbal suggests a number of possible use cases: Alexa could play you an upbeat song if the tone of your voice is downbeat, or it could tell you that a friend of yours sounds upset and suggest an uplifting movie for you to buy them.

Bear in mind, much of this is future-gazing, and there are many more potentially important use cases that have yet to be uncovered — and one of those is health care. In the future, Siri could observe a downturn in your mood over a number of weeks. Or if current research fulfils its promise, it could even help detect serious physical ailments.

“In the not so far future, our aim is to add vocal biomarker analysis to our feature set enabling Virtual Private Assistants to analyze your voice for specific health conditions,” added Mor.

Bumps in the road

The technology needs some improvements at a fundamental level. As things stand, during a conversation between a Beyond Verbal-enabled VPA and a user, 13 seconds of speech is required initially to render the first analysis, after which an emotional analysis can be carried out every 4 seconds — this process is for each and every conversation. It’s difficult to imagine a time when people will chat long enough with their Amazon Echo or Apple HomePod to enable mood detection. This is why passively collecting a person’s voice throughout a day will be vital for the technology to have any chance of succeeding.

“Currently a command style conversation would render too little voice to give an emotional analysis,” a company spokesperson acknowledged to VentureBeat. “We are currently working on an additional feature set which would reduce the time even more — this however is still not available for commercial use.”

Another way of improving mood detection would be through the broader Internet of Things, whereby voice is analyzed through multiple devices including wearables, mobiles, smart cars, and so on — but such ubiquity is likely some time off.

However, Beyond Verbal is raising VC cash, having nabbed around $ 10.8 million in venture funding, including a $ 3 million round in September 2016. If the company is to realize its vision of bringing real emotional intelligence to AI, at scale, it will need all the money it can get.

London Bridge terror attack hero emotionally reveals trauma: ‘I'm a different person’ https://briefnews.eu/london-bridge-terror-attack-hero-emotionally-reveals-trauma-im-a-different-person/ https://briefnews.eu/london-bridge-terror-attack-hero-emotionally-reveals-trauma-im-a-different-person/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2017 08:59:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/london-bridge-terror-attack-hero-emotionally-reveals-trauma-im-a-different-person/

Doorman Ozzie Gandaa, who threw bottles and bar stools at the three knife-wielding attackers, appeared on Good Morning Britain today to talk about his experience from the fateful night last weekend and revealed how it was still affecting him now.

Recalling the incident to hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard, the bouncer said: “Three guys were probably three metres away from me, and they just started stabbing one of my colleagues.

“[I was] just throwing chairs, throwing whatever we could find to kind of corner them off and get them focused on me rather than other people.”

He appeared to be shaken and looked downcast as he relived the horrific experience, while his voice seemed to be breaking during the interview on the ITV show.

The doorman said he took action against the attacker after his friend and colleague was savagely stabbed by one of the men, saying he had to do something to help her and he couldn’t “live with myself” if she “didn’t make it back”.

He said he was “relieved” when the police arrived and he heard the sirens, knowing that the ordeal was finally over.

Ozzie went on to reflect about returning to the area, explaining: “It’s hard being round here, thinking if there’s anything I could have done better, anything I could have done to help more people.”

He went on to say: “[It was] hard enough just getting on the train, just getting up there, I felt very paranoid. I had to have one of my colleagues with me so I actually felt a little bit safer, so I felt I was able to do it.

“Going back to the area itself brought back a lot of memories and made me think, ‘I made it out’ when other people didn’t make it out.”

“It made me feel like a little bit of a different person now. I’m a strong person, I rarely run from things, it’s not in my nature to do it – it’s changed the way I kind of feel.

“I feel very paranoid going back to the place… I know it’s not going to happen again. And the likelihood of it happening again in my lifetime again is more or less impossible, but in the back of my head it’s, ‘Is it going to happen again? Am I safe? Are my staff going to be safe? Are the people that I’m going to be working with going to be safe?’,” he added.

When asked by the Good Morning Britain stars whether he would go back to work, Ozzie remained stoically defiant and said that he would, saying that he had to keep his staff safe.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
