Twitter announced today on its developer forum that all emojis will count evenly toward the platform’s maximum 280 character limit. Before this update, various modifiers such as gender and skin tone caused certain emojis to use up more characters than other emojis.

Practically, this means that now every emoji counts as the same amount of characters, thus making things a little more equal on the microblogging service.

According to Twitter global lead developer advocate Andy Piper, “This update marks significant progress for our service, and everyone can now benefit from the additional room to express themselves with more characters…” This new change comes about a year after Twitter doubled the max character count from 140 to 280 and just weeks after Twitter announced an option to return to the chronological feed.

Instagram’s emoji shortcuts help you comment in record time https://briefnews.eu/instagrams-emoji-shortcuts-help-you-comment-in-record-time/ https://briefnews.eu/instagrams-emoji-shortcuts-help-you-comment-in-record-time/#respond Mon, 10 Sep 2018 02:01:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/instagrams-emoji-shortcuts-help-you-comment-in-record-time/

If you can’t post comments without tossing in at least one emoji to make your feelings clear, you’ll be glad to know that Instagram has your back. After months of testing, Instagram has introduced an emoji shortcut bar on Android and iOS that offers quick access to your most-used icons when wading into a post’s comments. You won’t have to sift through your phone keyboard’s emoji selection when you want to heart someone’s touching moment or tell them their new look is fire.

You could see an addition like this coming a mile away. Even in 2015, Instagram knew that emoji use was a big deal — and the widened variety in characters since then has no doubt helped its popularity. Yes, this isn’t exactly advancing the art of conversation, but people were going to use emoji regardless. Instagram clearly figures that you might as well streamline the experience.

Since 1981, the Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies, have been leading the way in nominating movies they consider to be the worst of the worst Hollywood has to offer. After all this time, the joke has kind of run its course, especially when the Razzies simply pick easy targets and don’t really bring much to the table when it comes to discussing the quality of cinema. But it’s Oscar weekend, so the “winners” of the awards honoring the worst in cinema have been announced, and the people want to know.

The 2018 Razzies winners have been crowned, and The Emoji Movie walked away with Worst Picture, the highest honors given by the Golden Raspberry Awards. But those weren’t the only awards won by the mindless, uninspired Sony Pictures Animation project. Find out all the honors The Emoji Movie rightfully and easily earned in the full 2018 Razzies winners list below.

Here’s how the 2018 Razzies winners were announced through their official YouTube channel:

So there you go. The Emoji Movie won Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Director and Worst Screen Combo. Honestly though, I’m not sure that it was that much wore than The Mummy. That movie didn’t go home empty-handed, but Tom Cruise was hardly the worst part of that movie. But again, that’s just another reminder why the Razzies really don’t matter.

Samsung’s redesigned emoji are actually recognizable https://briefnews.eu/samsungs-redesigned-emoji-are-actually-recognizable/ https://briefnews.eu/samsungs-redesigned-emoji-are-actually-recognizable/#respond Mon, 12 Feb 2018 22:34:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/samsungs-redesigned-emoji-are-actually-recognizable/

When you send an emoji to a friend, you want it to convey the same information. For example, if you sent a “rolling eyes” emoji to a buddy using a Samsung phone, they might not pick up what you’re laying down. That’s because 2017’s “rolling eyes” emoji looks more like a happy face with eyebrows and a smirk. Luckily, the new Samsung Experience 9.0 (set to release as part of the Android Oreo update for Galaxy S8 users) has tweaked quite a few emoji, including the eye-rolling one, to bring them all more in line with other platform’s representations of the Unicode characters.

As noted on the Emojipedia blog, the Face Screaming in Fear will now look more like the painting by Edvard Munch instead of the weird anime-thing that Samsung had last year. In addition, the dancing woman emoji will look more like a woman doing the tango than a kid stomping in her sneakers. The man dancing emoji also loses the sneaker outfit and gains a purple disco-style jumpsuit. The angry devil, or “imp face” is more similar to what Apple offers, too, changing from a young boy with vampire fangs to a purple frowny-face with horns. Many more of the human-representing icons use a Simpsons-esque yellow skin tone, too, which you can see in Samsung’s choice for Emoji 5.0 icons, like Star-Struck face, exploding head face, and woman with headscarf.

Not all new Samsung emoji match up with other platforms, however: the alien monster now looks like a purple squid for some reason. Women and Men with Bunny Ears only show one younger-looking person per gender, instead of two leotard-wearing people like the other platforms (except Facebook, which matches the singular representation). Still, more consistency can only be a good thing for Samsung and other phone owners to communicate just a bit more clearly.

Behold, the 157 new emoji for 2018 https://briefnews.eu/behold-the-157-new-emoji-for-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/behold-the-157-new-emoji-for-2018/#respond Thu, 08 Feb 2018 05:11:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/behold-the-157-new-emoji-for-2018/

Emojipedia

The Unicode Emoji 11.0 set is final, adding 157 new emoji to the 2666 we previously had. While we have not yet seen how these will be drawn by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and other vendors, Emojipedia has whipped up a set of sample emoji to present an idea of what they might look like.

There are 77 unique emojis, padded by skin-color varietals. For smileys there’s “Smiling Face With 3 Hearts,” “Hot Face,” “Cold Face,” “Partying Face,” “Woozy Face,” and “Pleading Face.” Humans get hair color options for “red,” “curly,” “bald,” and “white,” along with two new professions: “superheroes” and “supervillains.” There’s also disembodied legs and feet in the various skin tones, and we can’t wait to see how the kids turn them into weird euphemisms.

The next iPhone creates animated emoji from your facial expressions https://briefnews.eu/the-next-iphone-creates-animated-emoji-from-your-facial-expressions/ https://briefnews.eu/the-next-iphone-creates-animated-emoji-from-your-facial-expressions/#respond Sun, 10 Sep 2017 10:23:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-next-iphone-creates-animated-emoji-from-your-facial-expressions/

You may already know that the next iPhone will use face detection for all kinds of clever tricks, but here’s one you probably weren’t expecting: customized emoji. The 9to5Mac crew has discovered that leaked “gold master” iOS 11 firmware includes references to ‘Animoji,’ or 3D emoji that you create using your facial expressions and voice. Pick one of the familiar non-human faces in the emoji library and it’ll map your eye, mouth and cheek expressions to that character — you can make a robot smile or have a dog raise its eyebrows. Even the poo emoji can be animated. This comes across as a gimmick (we can see many people dropping this once the novelty wears off), but it shows what’s possible now that Apple has face tracking at its disposal. And there’s more to the leak than just emoji.

The scoop also offers more clues as to what the next iPhone can do. The camera will be more powerful, for one thing: in a confirmation of previous leaks, you can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second, and slow-motion 240FPS video at 1080p. It’ll also have an adaptive True Tone display like on the iPad Pro. The face-based authentication system appears to be relatively advanced, as you have to pivot your head in a circle to make sure it can recognize you from a wide range of angles. And if there was any doubt that the home button is going away, Apple just removed it: apps on the next iPhone have a line at the bottom indicating that gestures are available.

A separate code search by Steve Troughton-Smith may have also revealed the finished name. The brand new, all-screen iPhone appears to be called iPhone X. The revamped versions of the classic design, in turn, would be called the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Yes, Apple may be skipping the “S” naming scheme for the first time since it was instituted back in 2009 with the iPhone 3GS.

There are also mentions of dual-camera iPhone owners getting a Portrait Lighting mode that could alter the perceived lighting of a shot. You could add a stage lighting effect, or add the soft tones of natural lighting to a harshly-lit picture.

Other hints? We’ve already seen references to the LTE Apple Watch, but there’s also evidence of updated AirPods. The only conspicuous change entails moving the charging light to the outside of the case (no more flipping the lid), but we wouldn’t rule out under-the-hood revisions. The one sure thing is that Apple will have a lot to talk about during its September 12th event.
