Airbnb hosts have long had the opportunity to offer free housing during emergencies. What about making yourself available ahead of time? If you live in the right area, you’re set. The home rental service is launching a pilot program that will let San Jose residents put themselves on a standby list before there’s even a hint of a crisis. The move should speed up the community’s response in the event of a crisis, ensuring that stranded people don’t have to wait for shelters over their heads.

The test run will also include in-person preparedness recruiting and training as well as a “new operational protocol” for emergencies that includes management teams. The pilot is poised to expand to other cities after the San Jose launch.

There’s a strong incentive to do this: it builds good will at a time when some cities are still giving Airbnb the cold shoulder. At the same time, there’s no question this could be useful during earthquakes or other scenarios where there may be an urgent need for places to stay.

Planes must always evacuate in an emergency within 90 seconds.

This is dictated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), who only allow an airline to fly if they pass this timing.

Airlines must have procedures in place to allow this to happen, with training courses constantly reevaluating evacuation times.

There is also a secret handle many may not realise exists that also helps this.

The hidden feature can be found in the tray table in certain seats.

These are often the seats near the exit, which, not only have the most leg-room, but are used for people to exit during an emergency.

Quora user Vimal, a frequent flier, revealed this hidden handle that many may not realise exists.

He wrote: “If you notice a small knob near the lever of your tray table, then congratulations, you are sitting in the Overwing Emergency Exit Row,” which he explains is often on smaller planes such as the A320.”

He continues: “The knob helps to keep the tray table lever from moving into the open position as passengers squeeze between these seats to get to the Overwing Emergency Exit during evacuation. 

“It prevents the tray table from opening and blocking the way to the exit. It also serves as a good visual identification and physical identification (when your cabin is dark and filled with thick smoke) for the exit rows.”

Not all seats have this function as they are at less risk of being knocked if passengers are not walking through them.

It has been revealed why flights always dim the lights during take off and landing, which is also a safety precaution.

Flights do this so that the eyes have time to adjust to the dark, which can take up to 30 minutes for full adjustment.

Take off and landing are the two most dangerous times of a flight, which is called the Plus Three Minus Eight rule.

If an emergency does take place during this time, and the lights go out, the eyes will be more adjusted to the darkness and be able to escape easier.

This can help the 90 second evacuation time as well.

  • Thanksgiving is a massive day for food content sites like Food52.
  • The web publisher has a digital hotline promising readers help with cooking queries and emergencies within 10 minutes.
  • Forgetting to defrost is a big issue. And sometimes it’s a “purple turkey.”

For food publisher like Food52, Thanksgiving is its Super Bowl.

The site’s November user base is already up 60% versus the same month last year, and its search traffic has surged by 80% over the same period.

Back on July 1, Food52 attracted 192,000 unique visitors in a single day. On Monday of this week the site drew 344,000 unique visitors. That audience is expected to swell over the next few days, as Food52 hosts its annual Thanksgiving hotline, via which the site promises visitors it will answer queries within 10 minutes.

That mean the site has a dozen staffers working two hour shifts between now and Thanksgiving night, answering turkey queries like doctors on call.

Business Insider caught up with cofounder and CEO Amanda Hesser to talk about what it’s like to man a holiday hotline.

Mike Shields: So what is this week like for you guys?

Amanda Hesser: It’s really our moment to shine. We’re here to help people. Thanksgiving is a big daunting meal for people. Even experienced cooks don’t make turkey that often.

Barbara Kafka's Simple Roast Turkey, Bobbi LinFood52And you’ve got the presentation, and the cousins that aren’t getting along, you’re supposed to put this big meal on at 4:00 in the afternoon, and the family pressure – it’s all completely at odds with regular cooking. So all of a sudden you have a bunch of questions.

Shields: What’s it like doing the hotline?

Hesser: We’ve learned a lot in the seven or eight years we’ve been doing it. We take two-hour shifts, and get email alerts when people have questions. I actually find it really fun to help people.

Shields: What kind of questions do you get?

Hesser: Well, the most common mistake is that people forget to defrost the turkey. And once you realized you’ve forgotten, there’s only so much you can do. It’s a big bird to defrost. Yet people don’t think ‘I should really do this on Monday.’ That doesn’t seem logical. So we actually post a reminder of this on the site all week. 

Shields: What other kinds of questions are common?

Hesser: Most people want reassurance. Or they’ll ask things about whether they can replace certain things in a given recipe. The way we come at it is, we share their anxieties. We’ll get hundreds of questions. And our search tool has become bigger. 

Another thing we offer people is a menu maker. People can essentially take a quiz, walk through what they want to serve and how many people they expect, and this generates a menu they can print as a place setting. Plus they can print out all the recipes they need. [A variation of the menu maker will be available on the site throughout the holidays; it’s being sponsored by Braun cookware].

Shields: Any funny stories?

Hesser: There have been some unusual ones. For example:

Hesser: A few years ago we started a commerce business. And that year, we decided to also sell turkeys for Thanksgiving. We sold 90 turkeys that year. And 89 made it there, and one didn’t. There was a shipping problem. It took five of us to find a way to deliver that customer an alternate turkey, along with a gift. You just don’t want to be the one not delivering Thanksgiving dinner to some one. So we’ll never sell turkeys again

That’s bad news, not least because many unexpected events—from an illness to car or home repairs—can lead to bills that amount to much more than that. A recent report finds that many American families can spend about half of their monthly income covering such expenses, with the median cost being around $ 2,000.

The report, put out by Pew Charitable Trust, includes the results of surveys conducted in 2014 and 2015 to see how Americans were coping with what are referred to as financial shocks—those one-off expenses that crop up from time to time. Pew found that in large part, Americans’ ability to weather financial shocks is partially dependent on something that Americans still struggle to accumulate: savings.

According to the report, savings can trump income when people have to deal with unexpected expenses; having $ 2,000 in savings allowed those in the lowest income brackets to recover from these events as quickly as those who made more money, but had less in savings. For example, around three-quarters of families that earned less than $ 25,000 but had $ 2,000 to $ 4,000 in savings said that they had a hard time recovering after a financial shock. That’s around the same proportion of families who said they had a hard time recovering even though they earn more—between $ 25,000 to $ 84,999—but had less than $ 2,000 in savings.

While this illustrates the importance of saving up cash, that’s often easier said than done. This is in part because while people of all income levels can live paycheck-to-paycheck, those barely earning enough to cover necessities have a much harder time whittling down their expenses. And those who earn the least are also the least likely to suddenly inherit a sum of money or have family members or acquaintances who can help them out in a bind. That can make their ability to save dependent upon working more hours, or getting raises, or finding the time and money to advance their education—all difficult feats.

And the truth is that while savings helps in an emergency, it isn’t enough to ease financial stress. While cash on hand prevented many families from being completely destabilized by an emergency, about half of those who had to shell out their saved money reported feeling financially strapped in its aftermath.

The fallout from experiencing a sudden expense—especially among low-earners—has a cyclical effect: 70 percent of those who had a financial shock in 2014 also had one in 2015. Being a millennial, making less than $ 25,000 a year, or being black or Hispanic also made the likelihood of experiencing a financial shock and struggling afterward much more likely in both years.

Financial hardship can leave some families with few good choices. While just under two-thirds of those surveyed said that they would use their checking or savings accounts in an emergency, about 35 percent of people said that they would use their credit card. Of those who did rely on credit, less than a quarter said they were able to pay off the balance in a month or less, which pushed up their revolving debt. Not coincidentally, high debt levels in 2014 were an important predictor of whether or not a family would face financial hardship in the following year.

Breaking this cycle would be tricky. It would require not only better wages for many workers, but also different systems for savings and an understanding that even fiscal responsibility can’t ward off every financial threat.
