YouTube/THE STORY OF STAR WARS
At the end of last year, it was revealed that Prince William and Prince Harry’s secretly filmed cameos in the latest Star Wars film, “The Last Jedi,” had been cut — and it was rumoured to be on account of the royals being too tall.
The brothers, who are apparently huge Star Wars fans, attended the premiere of the film in December 2017.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Police in Toronto are officially investigating the deaths of billionaire pharmaceutical entrepreneur Barry Sherman and his wife Honey as a double homicide after their bodies were discovered in the basement of their home in December.
Friday’s announcement comes after six weeks of evidence gathering and confirms the suspicions initially expressed by the rest of Sherman’s family.
Detective sergeant Susan Gomes discussed the circumstances of the couple’s death for the first time, and stated the pair were discovered hanging by belts from a railing next to an indoor pool in the basement of the couple’s $ 5.4 million mansion.
Police had previously confirmed that the cause of death had been “ligature neck compression” — strangulation from tying or binding. Their bodies were first found by a real estate agent who had been preparing the mansion, which the Shermans had recently put up for sale, for an open house.
But as was originally reported, there is still no evidence of anyone forcibly entering the home.
Rob Gillies/AP
In the weeks since the Shermans’ deaths, there had been reports in the media that cited “a Toronto police source” that claimed the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide committed by Barry Sherman, but there has been no official evidence put forward by police that would confirm this.
The family also put out a statement deriding the accusations.
“Our parents shared an enthusiasm for life and commitment to their family and community totally inconsistent with the rumors regrettably circulated in the media as to the circumstances surrounding their deaths,” the statement read. “We are shocked and think it’s irresponsible that police sources have reportedly advised the media of a theory which neither their family, their friends nor their colleagues believe to be true.”
As a result of their lack of confidence in the police, the family hired private investigators in December who promised to “ensure that no stone is left unturned.”
Sherman, 75, founded Apotex in 1974, and it is now one of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies. The couple were known for their philanthropy, giving tens of millions of dollars to hospitals, universities, and Jewish organizations.
The family’s political activities before the homicides have come under increased scrutiny since their deaths.
Just before his death, Sherman was attempting to sideline an investigation into whether a political fundraiser he held for Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau in 2015 violated lobbying rules, according to the Toronto Star.
But since the homicides occurred, there has been no evidence linking this activity to Sherman and his wife’s death.

After spending three months at a temperature of just 20°C above absolute zero, the massive James Webb Space Telescope emerged from a large vacuum chamber at the end of 2017. Now, after reviewing data from testing done there, scientists have given the instrument a clean bill of health, moving it one step closer to space.
“We now have have verified that NASA and its partners have an outstanding telescope and set of science instruments,” said Bill Ochs, the Webb telescope project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We are marching toward launch.”

The eight-month study, known as the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, was the fifth of its kind, funded by NASA and run through the University of Hawaii.
“So you’ve basically been in a place for three-quarters of a year, and you come outside and that finally feels real to you,” he explained. “Like, oh man, it’s the middle of September, you got the holidays coming up. You got bills and plans to figure out. It’s a big reality check.”
Just like in space, there was a 20-minute delay before communications were transmitted. The crew also couldn’t access Google, so most of their new information came from following Wikipedia’s current events or looking at mission-related websites, Ehrlich said.
Ehrlich described himself as someone who likes to keep up with US and international news, and said he kept up the habit while living in the dome — possibly more than he should have. He is originally from Hollywood, Florida, he added, and was constantly checking the National Hurricane website for updates during Irma.
“It’s really fun to be outside,” he said. “In fact, I don’t want to be inside.”
Making moms everywhere proud, Ehrlich admitted that he called his mother and grandma as soon as he got out of the dome. “I wanted to hear their voices,” he said, adding that he also called his girlfriend “and it was awesome to hear her.”

Marvel’s The Defenders released all eight episodes on Friday morning, slowly but surely uniting Matt Murdoch, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand in a case to keep the ominous global organization known as The Hand from making New York the latest city to fall to its centuries-long whims.
Matt (Charlie Cox) met Jessica (Krysten Ritter) when he showed up as her lawyer, to clean up the mess that was made when her client’s wayward architect husband blew his brains out in the Alias Investigations office, overwhelmed by his role in The Hand’s grand plan. Luke (Mike Colter) and Danny (Finn Jones) in turn crossed paths/traded blows when the former sought to keep a Harlem kid out of the latter’s clutches.
On the villainous side of things, Sigourney Weaver played Alexandra, one of the four remaining “fingers” of The Hand. Her latest stint on Earth was expiring, the last bit of the life-restoring “substance” having been used to bring back Elektra Natchios as the assassin dubbed Black Sky. The Hand’s plan was to abduct The Immortal Iron Fist and use his powerful paw to serve as the key to a locked door located far, far, far below the streets of New York, beneath the Midland Circle building.
It was in a Midland Circle boardroom that Danny, Luke, Matt and Jessica would team up as a quartet for the first time, extricating Danny from a honey trap. The four then hunkered down inside a Chinese restaurant, where in Episode 4 they had a long moment to take stock of one another’s powers as well as get an exposition download from Stick (Scott Glenn). In the wake of a massive melee with The Hand’s assorted armies, Luke survived getting smacked by a bus to return with Hand member Sowande. He would only confirm that Iron Fist was needed as a key to something, before Stick lopped the guy’s noggin off.
After some tense in-fighting, including some actual fighting, Danny was detained by the others, lest The Hand be able to get their mitts on him and use him for whatever purpose. Stick though, eventually decided there was another way to neutralize the potential threat Danny posed and drugged Luke so that he could go in for the kill. But Elektra showed up to fend him off, KO Jessica and Matt for good measure, and then whisk Danny off to deliver to The Hand, just as Alexandra was about to get the heave-ho.
The end of Alexandra’s reign proved imminent regardless, when in front of the other Hand members Elektra ran her through with a katana and promptly assumed leadership (though as Madame Gao noted, without stopping to think about the lost political/corporate connections that Alexandra had secured in the group’s interest). Whatever the case, that set the stage for the final clashes — Elektra versus Danny in the subterranean chamber below, and then everyone versus everyone, once the locked door to K’un-Lun (the great dragon Shao-Lao’s remains included!) had been opened by the Iron Fist. Meanwhile, topside, Claire Temple and Colleen Wing went about planting C4 explosives to bring the building crumbling down upon The Hand and what they were after, with even top cop Misty Knight lending a hand (or more).
In the end, all Hand members were vanquished, and Jessica, Luke and Danny made it back up to street level. Matt, though, stayed below ground to try to snap Elektra out of it, even as the C4 timer tick-tocked. Elektra eventually agreed that they would be together forever, though in death, as the building exploded and buried them.
So… no Daredevil Season 3 after all? Fake-out! For in The Defenders‘ final moments, we see that a bruised (and presumably broken) Matt in fact did, somehow, at some point, make it out of the rubble, and is now in the care of some nuns — his (unseen) mother Maggie included!
Before you grade the eight-episode series, a quick review of the team-up’s “all-stars” and benchwarmers:
MATT MURDOCH was able to deal with the fallout of Daredevil Season 2, telling Foggy (and by association Karen) that the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is someone he needs to be. Matt also got to see Elektra again, and almost bring her back into his life.
JESSICA JONES brought oh-so-much glorious snark and sass to the proceedings, whether eyerolling at Matt’s costume or declaring the bad guys’ whole mystical end game to be “stupid.” The series also took a moment to revisit her onetime “bond” with Luke, in some fleeting exchanges and then a final bar scene. That said, I still feel her powers are not being best displayed.
LUKE CAGE shared a warm post-prison reunion with Claire before all hell started breaking loose, and then made sure to keep her safe once it did. His famous bromance with Danny got off to a rocky start, but the two started to bond over tales of dragons and rocket launchers. Also see above re: Jessica.
DANNY RAND was the foundation for much comic relief, as the other Defenders repeatedly scoffed at his especially unbelievable origin story and the whole “chi” thing. But by the end of it all, Danny proved himself a reliable team member, even if his relationship with Colleen got a bit of short shrift.
STICK had a larger presence than one might have imagined, and offered the sage wisdom of an “elder” when the newly united heroes started squabbling. He also held his own even when cuffed to a pipe by Alexandra and Elektra.
MISTY KNIGHT celebrated her new promotion by always giving the Defenders the benefit of a doubt, irking her boss in the process. In the end, she helped save the day, and for her trouble took a major step in the character’s evolution. (In comic book lore, she was outfitted with a bionic arm and formed the Daughters of the Dragon with Colleen.)
COLLEEN WING got off to a good start in the early episodes, but then got demoted to the B-team holding room alongside non-fighters such as Malcolm and Karen. Fortunately, she rose to the occasion in the closing hour by pinching the C4 and besting Hand member Bakuto.
CLAIRE TEMPLE, like Colleen, played an integral role as the series got off the ground, fostering a détente between Luke and Danny. And at the end, she joined Colleen in rigging the tower with C4.
KAREN PAGE seemed to spend much of her time questioning Matt’s decisions, whereas FOGGY NELSON at least came through with the Daredevil suit when critically needed.
TRISH WALKER was on hand mainly to root on Jessica (while failing to pump up her hero image), while MALCOLM DUCASSE saw near-zero character development.
Among the baddies…. Superbly played by a calm-and-cool Weaver, ALEXANDRA was interesting in that her grand plan actually started to get away from her, making her almost-ejection from The Hand rather reasonable. Elodie Yung was mesmerizing as ELEKTRA first returned to live and grappled with her new non-identity, especially evidenced by her conflicted feelings lying in Matt’s bed. Her agenda got a bit muddled, though, once she abruptly seized control of The Hand. MADAME GAO (played by Wai Ching Ho) was magnetic each time she was on screen, and also a force to be reckoned with in a fight. MURAKAMI (Yutaka Takeuchi) was effectively authentic with his all-Japanese dialogue (and masterful butchering of a beast), but only proved a bit more interesting than BUKATO.

Chipotle’s online ratings are plummeting to “historic lows,” according to a report by UBS.
It’s not unusual for ratings to drop after a food-safety scare like the norovirus outbreak at the Chipotle in Sterling, Virginia, last month.
But the decline started months before the recent food-safety scare, according to UBS’ analysis of 120,000 online reviews dating back to 2010.
Chipotle’s online scores have dropped a total of 30% since 2010, to 2.6 stars out of five, which is lower than the scores of peers including Qdoba and Moe’s Southwest Grill, the report found.
Chipotle’s ratings fell sharply after the E. coli outbreak involving its restaurants in late 2015, then showed signs of recovery last year after the chain introduced chorizo to the menu.
But that bump was short-lived.
UBS Evidence Lab
Ratings started declining again in April, around the time that Chipotle rolled out its largest-ever marketing campaign, which included its first national TV ads.
“We would have expected to see an improvement in online review scores as a result, though instead scores declined starting in April,” the analysts wrote.
The norovirus outbreak in Virginia last month sent ratings even lower.
“While this is unlikely to be something that Chipotle could foresee or control, more negative publicity could further damage brand reputation, perceptions, and trust,” analysts said.

The number of reviews mentioning long lines has also dropped to below the post-E. coli-outbreak lows.
Some of that decline could be attributed to an increase in online orders and improved efficiency in restaurants, “but could also suggest that restaurant lines are not building, with sales volumes still relatively low,” analysts wrote.
Chipotle CEO Steve Ells acknowledged last year that the chain’s restaurant service — which likely has a huge impact on reviews — had started slipping.
He cited flaws like messy soda stations, dirty tables, and slow-moving lines, and said the company internally rates half of its roughly 2,100 restaurants with a “C” grade for service.
“We took our eye off the ball on the customer service side,” Ells said during a presentation at a Barclays investors conference in December.
He said the company was committed to improving service. But it seems like customers still aren’t seeing any results from that effort, according to the chain’s ratings.

The dreaded day is here. There’s momentum building on the long-rumored Creature From the Black Lagoon remake, the one Universal Horror title we hoped against hope would slink unbothered along the muddy bottom of the studio’s shiny new shared universe starring its classic monsters.
But it was inevitable, really, that Hollywood would once again barge into the Gill-man’s remote lair in the Amazon. Today, Deadline reports that Will Beall—appropriately enough, the scripter of Aquaman—has been hired to pen the Creature remake, which will be based on Beall’s own idea. We don’t get any more details on what his idea might be, but presumably it’ll offer an update on the 1954 tale of a group of scientists (including iconic bathing beauty Julie Adams) who discover you-know-who dwelling you-know-where, and chaos ensues.
If early looks at The Mummy—which is out June 9—are any indication, the new Creature will be completely stuffed with an abundance of special effects. And it’s pretty likely the monster won’t be played by a guy in a rubber suit this time around. Here’s hoping they at least keep his iconic theme music.

Swedish researchers say they’ve discovered traces of ancient red algae preserved in sedimentary rock dating back 1.6 billion years, making them the oldest plant-like fossils ever found. The discovery shows that complex multicellular life appeared in Earth’s history much earlier than previously thought.
Two kinds of fossils, both found in the Chitrakoot region of central India, were analyzed by Stefan Bengtson and his team from the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Using an impressive array of imaging techniques, the researchers identified physical characteristics consistent with red algae, a primitive form of plant-like life capable of photosynthesis, and one of the first forms of complex life to emerge on Earth. The fossils are an astounding 400 million years older than the previous record holder for a plant-like fossil, indicating an earlier origin for advanced multicellular life. This research now appears in PLOS Biology.
Life got started on our planet shortly after the formation of Earth some 3.77 billion years ago. A recent study offered new evidence showing that this simplest form of life—single celled organisms called prokaryotes—could have emerged near deep sea hydrothermal vents.Life remained in this very simple form for another 2.5 billion years, though the first photosynthetic bacteria emerged 3.4 billion years ago, and the first multicellular organisms appeared some time between 2.1 and 2.7 billion years ago, including oxygen-producing cyanobacteria. Then, during the Proterozoic Era, advanced multicellular organisms called eukaryotes, with more specialized cells, finally emerged.
Among these primordial creatures was red algae, a mostly marine group of seaweeds representing a primitive branch of plants. They were some of the earliest plant-like organisms on the planet, containing green chloroplasts that allowed for photosynthesis, and other light-gathering pigments that give the algae their characteristic red color. Prior to this new discovery, the oldest known algae fossil—another red algae called Bangiomorpha—was dated at 1.2 billion years old.
“This discovery puts the clock back for major evolutionary events,” Bengtson told Gizmodo. “The new finds are 400 million years older than Bangiomorpha and suggest that advanced multicellularity appeared at least a billion years before the ‘Cambrian explosion’, when multicellular organism diversified and took on a major role in the ecosystems. We shall probably have to reevaluate the timing of appearance of major lineages in the tree of life.” Other multicellular organisms likely existed at this time, but nothing as biologically sophisticated as algae.
The red algae was found embedded in fossil mats of cyanobacteria, called stromatolites, in ancient Indian phosphorite. Using synchrotron-based X-ray tomographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and other scanning techniques, the researchers identified features consistent with plant-like organisms.

“We found two kinds, the thread-like Rafatazmia and the fleshy Ramathallus,” said Bengtson. “The thread-like ones are about the thickness of a human hair, consisting of chains of cells, typically with some kind of pore or plug in the dividing wall between the cells. Rhomboidal [four-sided] platelets occupy the center of each cell; these are interpreted as parts of the chloroplasts.”
He says the fleshy fossils grew in complex colonies consisting of finger-like protrusions, and that the tissues were comprised of tightly-packed, cell-chain filaments called “cell fountains.” No internal structures were detected, except for some strange globular features of an unknown nature.

When it was alive, the thread-like algae would have appeared as tufts of hair swimming in the surface water of the Earth’s oceans, possibly attached at one end. The fleshy ones would looked like oddly shaped clumps in microbial mats bathed in cyanobacteria. These primordial, multi-celled organisms lived in shallow marine water at a time when the sea-floor was dominated by rounded pillar-like stromatolites
“Like modern algae, the fossil forms would be effective photosynthesizers, building organic matter using the energy from sunlight,” said Bengtson. “Plants are responsible for most of the oxygen-producing photosynthesis today, and we are looking at the beginning of this life-giving process, though it probably took another billion years before plants became dominant.”
Interestingly, red algae was a kind of dead end as far as biological diversity is concerned; as far as we know, only red algae is descended from red algae. Green algae, which split off from a common ancestor, eventually gave rise to land plants.
Peter Wilf, a paleobotanist at Penn State’s Department of Geosciences who wasn’t involved in the new study, says the new fossils are “spectacular.”
“Without doubt they provide a wealth of new information about the timing of eukaryote evolution, potentially pushing significant evolutionary events several hundred million years back in time,” Wilf told Gizmodo. “They demonstrate once again that fossils provide the only physical evidence of life’s evolution through geologic time and remind us that most fossils remain undiscovered.”
Looking ahead, Bengston’s team would like to find more traces of multicellular lifeforms in the rocks of other regions.
