Fire Emblem Warriors is, in many ways, the complete opposite of what the Intelligent Systems series is known for. The spin-off takes the measured, turned-based tactical gameplay of the 3DS games and turns it on its head to create a fast-paced, action-orientated hack and slash. And despite being the polar opposite to what the series is known for, it translates remarkably well. Fire Emblem Warriors follows two royal twins, driven out of their home and separated from their mother. To save the day, they have to stop an evil dragon from being awakened – and along the way team-up with much-loved characters from the Fire Emblem series. The story doesn’t break new ground, but a lot of the joy comes from seeing memorable faces from past games team up and interact with one another. Fan favourites such as Chrom, Camilla and Marth, among many others, all make an appearance in Fire Emblem Warriors. Dialogue these beloved characters share during quiet moments in-between battles provides some truly charming and brilliant exchanges. The big draw of Fire Emblem Warriors is seeing how the patient approach of the main series translates to a fast and furious action game. Developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja, it is an offshoot of the Dynasty Warriors series – games where players take on wave after wave of enemies. Hundreds of enemies can be on-screen at a time, and ploughing through this vast amount of opposing forces in past titles could often be a chore. Fire Emblem Warriors gracefully steps around this issue by incorporating tactical elements from the main Fire Emblem series. You have to manage battles to make sure no ally gets overrun by enemy forces. At any one time you can be trying to control multiple characters, pressing a button to quickly switch between these allies on one, huge map. They could be fighting different waves of enemies all at once in separate corners of the playing area, which you have to keep on top of quickly and efficiently. One way to do this is you can pause the game and give orders to allies, to help automate things so you’re not running around like a headless chicken. On the map you can order stronger units to guard weaker ones, to protect them from an onslaught they’re not equipped to deal with on their own. Or, if you come across more powerful enemies you can order your beefiest units to team up to support one another, which makes their attacks more potent. The fights move at an incredibly fast-pace, so it’s difficult to keep on top of everything. Throw into the mix that Fire Emblem Warriors lets you choose perma-death, like the main series of the games, which raises the stakes even higher. In order to progress, especially at later levels, you’ll need to think strategically and smartly to clear stages. If you want you can tailor the experience to make it less punishing – for instance by turning off perma-death so you can enjoy stress-free the hack and slash action. As you’d expect from a game Team Ninja has had a hand in, the combat system is fast, fluid and a joy to control. Special super moves that can be carried out after a meter is built up, complete with their own stylish animations, are awesome to behold too. The only downside is at times, like with all Dynasty Warriors-style titles, the tried-and-tested gameplay of fighting waves of enemies can become repetitive. However, the tactical elements of Fire Emblem Warriors – coupled with the fun combat system, means it’s a never a chore or bore to play. Fire Emblem Warriors is another great addition to the Nintendo Switch line-up. It’s a brilliantly put together game that is buckets of fun and a must for any fan of the Fire Emblem series. While the release schedule at the moment is packed full of great titles, Fire Emblem Warriors is a game that demands your attention. VERDICT: 4/5

You may want to check if you can cancel your Fire Emblem Warriors or Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon pre-orders. Nintendo has just announced a special FE Warriors edition for the Switch and a Veteran Trainer’s dual pack that includes both new Pokémon games. The special edition FE Warriors comes with a copy of the game for Nintendo’s hybrid console, three CDs’ worth of music from the game, character art cards and a dual-sided poster. It’ll set you back $ 80, or $ 20 more than just the game itself, but if you get weak in the knees for special edition collectibles, then that doesn’t sound so bad. Nintendo has also revealed that the game will be available in North America on October 20th, at least for the Switch.

It’s still unclear if the 3DS version of FE Warriors is getting the same special edition treatment and if it’ll come out at the same time, but 3DS (and 2DS) gamers can look forward to the Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon dual pack. The bundle comes with both games, 16 art cards and a digital code for 200 Poké balls. This one will cost you $ 80, the same amount you’d have to pay if you’re buying both games separately. It also costs as much as the dual Steelbook edition, though, so you’ll have to decide whether you want a nice case or 200 Poké balls.
These special bundles will be available on the same day the games become available: FE Warriors will come out in North America on October 20th, while you can start playing Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on November 17th.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is the newest installment in the popular tactics game series. Whether you’re a fresh faced rookie or a war weary strategist, there’s a few things you should know if you want to conquer the battlefield.
You can pick one of two difficulty levels as well as play with or without permadeath. I recommend hard mode, which ups the stakes a little bit. Fire Emblem Echoes is already a tricky game but the added difficulty makes for far more interesting battles.
One of Fire Emblem’s big hooks is that allies that die on the battlefield stay dead. This is my preferred way to play and I highly recommend it. If that seems a bit daunting though, it’s perfectly fine to play in Casual Mode, where your units simply retreat. Choose what’s most fun for you and your personal tastes. The important thing is to enjoy yourself.
No matter what mode and difficulty you are playing on, you will have access to Mila’s Turnwheel. This magical item allows you to rewind your actions if you make a mistake. It has a limit amount of charges but you can upgrade that by finding cogs in the world.
It can be very tempting to rush things in Fire Emblem but a shrewd strategist knows the value of patience. Charging ahead could get people killed so try to take time to position troops exactly where you want. You can even wait to have the enemy come to you. Fight on your own terms.
Positioning units in forests or ruins provides some bonuses to defense and evasion that can mean the difference between life and death. You’ll see terrain effect indicators in the upper left corner of the screen. Areas with supplies will heal your unit at the start of each turn. Snag these valuable positions before your enemy can to reap benefits and turn the tide of battle in your favor.
While terrain is important, you can bypass its effects using magic. If you enemy is hunkered down in the forest, attack with a mage to ignore those benefits and easily dispose of your enemies.

If you’re use to modern series titles like Awakening and Fates, you might be surprised how far archers can shoot. In those games, archers had a range of two squares and couldn’t shoot enemies directly adjacent to them. In Echoes, the range is one to three square and can increase further with special bows equipped. Keep this in mind as you progress into enemy territory
Pressing the X button while on the map will reveal all squares where you’re open to enemy attack. If you’re going on the offensive, use this to shift units into positions where the enemy can’t hit you. Enter the danger zone when you’re ready to strike.
Some Fire Emblem games have a system where certain weapons trump others in a Rock, Paper, Scissor fashion. For instance, in Awakening, swords had advantages against axes but were weak against lances and spears. Echoes doesn’t have this. All combat is based on character stats. When attacking, it’s important to compare unit statistics to get a sense of how things will play out no matter who is fighting.
Cantors are dangerous enemies who can summon a ton of minions. The good news is that if you kill the cantor, all of his summoned helpers die too. If you see a cantor, take him out quickly to avoid getting rushed.
Alm and Celica both have the ability to use amiibo to summon spectral warriors for a single turn. For certain amiibo like Lucina, it will summon that hero, but for everything else, it will spawn some random warriors. It can be tempting to use this to brute for through battles but I don’t advise it. You’ll deprive your troops of valuable experience and it robs a lot of the challenge.
A key part of Echoes is visiting villages for supplies. In villages, you can look around the landscape to pick up items and talk to various NPCs. Make sure to pick up everything you find and talk to whoever you can. You might find a new sword, receive a quest, or make a new ally.
You units can hold one item at a time, be it a consumable healing item or a brand new sword. Make sure you equip what you find. Having extra healing is nice and certain classes, like the Mercenary, benefit greatly from new weapons. Items like swords and shields will also unlock skills for your units to learn such as new attacks or different ways to navigate the map.
Plus, unlike some other games in the series, there’s no item durability so feel use them as much as you want.
When you do learn a new skill from an item, you should be aware that your unit doesn’t keep that skill forever. Instead, they will have it as long as they have that item equipped.
You control both Alm and Celica’s parties throughout the game. Sometimes, you might find an item with one party that’s perfect for someone in another. If you want to send items to your other army, look in towns for peddlers who will deliver a single item to the other group.
You don’t always have to press on to the next mission. Returning to old locations can reveal new quests or even characters to recruit. It’s worth doubling back from time to time to see what you might find.

Take Time To Watch Everyone’s Support Conversations
Echoes incorporates a throwback to the series’ older support system. While it doesn’t let you pair units, they can still gain affinity on the battlefield and engage in conversations. These provide a lot of insight into the world of Valentia, the day to day lives of your units, and each of them has clear, engaging narrative arc. Don’t skip out on them. You can also re-read any of the ones you’ve unlocked by accessing Mila’s turnwheel while on the overworld screen.
Dungeons are a new real-time action addition to the series and exploring them is crucial. It’s not just about finding treasure chests either. Smash every crate you find and search dead ends for breakable walls to find even more loot and get the most out of your dungeon delving.
If you want to push someone that little bit extra towards a new class or even just help characters gain affinity so you can see support scenes, you can always head back into dungeons for a few battles. You can’t quite power level to massive heights but it can still help you unlock a few things here and there.
Tactics games can get intense. It can be frustrating to fall into an enemy’s trap. Take a breath and relax. You’re going to do great. Get out there, kick butt, and enjoy your journey through Valentia.

Echoes, to be released May 19th on Nintendo 3DS, is a reimagining of the 1992 Famicom game Fire Emblem Gaiden. It repackages the basic narrative and strives to find a balance between older, more deliberate design sensibilities and the series’ more accessible 3DS entries like Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates. The end result is largely successful. The tactical depth arising from the reintroduction of older design elements leads to intense battles, while high-quality production brings the story to life.
Players follow the tale of two characters in Fire Emblem Echoes. Alm is a wide-eyed peasant from a backwater village, while Celica is a devoted priestess. As children, they lived together in Alm’s village before disaster and intrigue tore them apart. The two embark on separate quests that will change the world: Alm is thrust into leadership, becoming the figurehead of a populist army seeking to drive out invaders who deposed his country’s king. Celica leaves on a pilgrimage to ask a powerful goddess to help rid the world of strife. You control both, leapfrogging between perspectives to see how one character’s actions affects the other over the course of a grand war.

Echoes’ story presentation is astounding. The script is localized remarkably well, granting each character a unique voice that never feels forced or stilted. This is also the first 3DS title in the series with full voice acting. From main characters to incidental villagers, Echoes’ story comes to life thanks to superb voice work from talented actors. The narrative, which adds additional scenes and characters not seen in Gaiden, weaves a tale of class oppression and courtly intrigue that manages to retain a human core. It never quite reaches the emotional breadth of Awakening or the all-out melodrama of Fates, but it remains captivating throughout thanks to the strong script and powerful voice acting.
The core of Fire Emblem Echoes is tactical combat. Units are arranged on a grid and are then ordered around into individual skirmishes. Echoes uses many of the older mechanics from the series, and the combat tends to be better for it: Archers can shoot farther distances than the modern titles, units can’t combine into powerful duos, and fatigue can set in to weaken characters who overexert themselves on the battlefield, leading to a decreased healthbar. There are more variables to track, creating a more in-depth, if occasionally overwhelming, battlefield experience.

Fire Emblem Awakening had a distinctly energetic feeling. Battles were boisterous, filled with massive critical attacks and excessive flair. Echoes is grittier, with an emphasis on defense. Units don’t engage in clean battles. Fights are violent slogs reliant on terrain, magical vulnerabilities, and special items like shields. Victory is hard earned and it can sometimes take a great deal of effort to best even a single foe. I found that this makes success feel particularly rewarding, but it may alienate other players with its difficulty.
If Echoes has a cardinal sin, it is poor pacing. The early game is slow, granting the player control over Alm and his comrades when they are little more than a gaggle of peasants. It takes some time before you can upgrade them into a cohesive army of archers, knights, mages, and mercenaries. And the endgame is punishing, with maps that funnel you towards overpowered villains and stack themselves with teleporting enemies and summoners who will continually spawn new foes.
Only the middle of the game, full of character growth and developing abilities, manages to truly succeed. The game does give players a magical clock to rewind battles, but not even that can make up for some of the more lopsided difficult map design.
As if to provide a counterbalance to the intense battles, Echoes attempts to diversify the player’s experience by expanding how they interact with the world around them. Villages can be entered and explored in segments that feel a bit like visual novels. Players can speak to townsfolk to get a sense of the world, take small quests that offers useful rewards, or enter into a first person perspective to hunt for various items and trinkets.

New to the series is the addition of dungeons. Alm and Celica will occasionally have to dive down into ancient ruins or enemy fortresses. These large explorable spaces split the difference between navigation and combat, working a bit like the dungeons in a normal RPG, full of treasure to find, shrines to pray at, and bosses to fight. Enemies wander the corridors, and attacking them will launch the game into a tactics battle. Managing your characters’ fatigue is critical, and some dungeons may take multiple trips to completely explore. They’re a bit sparse but provide some of the game’s greatest challenges.
Fire Emblem Echoes has many ambitions. It wants to be a difficult tactics game and it wants to tell a broad story of love and war. In the moment, it succeeds. It is only in the aftermath, after the war has ended and the corpses are cold, that the game starts to feel underwhelming. The game often feels caught between two extremes that it cannot fully reconcile. The combat, although robust, tends to frustrate and the story, although impeccable in presentation, doesn’t quite feel as sweeping and romantic as previous titles on the 3DS.
From start to finish, Echoes presents a grueling experience. Its war is a brutal grind of bodies and mud. If you can endure the challenge, you’ll find a satisfying mixture of tactics and story. Just don’t be surprised if you’re left with a few nasty scars in the process.

]]>Fire Emblem Heroes, as an idea, doesn’t seem to match Nintendo’s efforts in the mobile space so far.
Pokémon Go removed much of the base series’ depth for location-based social activity. Super Mario Run relegated the sophistication of Mario platforming to button taps. Fire Emblem as a series is resistant to that kind of reduction. The strategy role-playing game series is all about lengthy battles, challenging maps and memorable characters whose stories play out over several chapters.
Yet…

For many, Fire Emblem Heroes is little more than a fun strategy game filled with fab fashion and horny heroes. For an unlucky few, a terrible glitch has transformed the game into a terrifying nightmare.
An audio glitch in Fire Emblem Heroes is warping the experience into something devilish. Chipper music turns to hellish droning and garbling character voices into demonic growls. A few players have captured the glitch in action:
The colorful cast devolve into growling creatures of pure terror that almost certainly want to steal your soul and your credit card information. They will use you to summon an army of more demonic anime warriors who will flood the planet with their horniness.
Or maybe it’s just a silly glitch. We’ve reached out to Nintendo to see if there’s a fix coming anytime soon. Time will tell if affected players will be able to dispel these glitchy monsters.
