Amazon on Wednesday released the first full-length trailer for its anticipated limited series Good Omens, which is set to bow with all six episodes on Friday, May 31.

Good Omens takes place in 2018, when the Apocalypse is near and Final Judgment is set to descend upon humanity. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, and tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. However, Aziraphale (played by Masters of Sex‘s Michael Sheen), a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon (Doctor Who‘s David Tennant) — both of whom have lived amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle — are not actually looking forward to the coming war.

good-omens-key-artIn the above trailer, Crowley warns Aziraphale that armageddon is just days away, and they’ll have to work together to track down the Antichrist, an 11-year-old boy unaware that he is meant to bring upon the end of days.

As previously reported, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) will lend his voice to the show’s animated Satan. Meanwhile, Brian Cox (Succession) will serve as the voice of Death.

Rounding out the impressive cast are Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Frances McDormand (Fargo), Adria Arjona (Emerald City), Michael McKean (Better Call Saul), Nina Sosanya (Love Actually) and Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders).

The Grenfell Tower fire sparked an enormous tragedy in London on June 14 last year and saw 71 people lose their lives in the catastrophic blaze.

Now the BBC have unveiled plans for one of their biggest and most important projects ever and will see volunteers from all trades and communities coming together with presenter Nick Knowles to help the victims continue to rebuild their lives.

Dale Youth Boxing Club, one of the builds on the ambitious new project, was based on the first floor of the North Kensington tower block and had been an invaluable resource for disadvantaged and struggling young people.

Credited as being one of the best clubs in the country, following the fire it has been forced to set up in a nearby car park.

DIY SOS has also discovered the need for a varied community space that can house a number of activities for the “close knit” community to enjoy.

Speaking about the ambitious task, Nick shared his nerves about taking part in such a monumental endeavour.

“I’m so excited about this project,” he said. “DIY SOS is using its years of experience and vast contacts book to bring together companies from across the construction industry to work together with the local community on this important project.

“It’s daunting in terms of scale and size even for us but we all make an important statement when we come together to work on something so ambitious, so positive and so needed.”

The series’ host also posted a plea on his Twitter account, urging members of the public to contact the team and get involved.

“Please come & join us to work with this community if u can with skills & materials for these two wonderful buildings,” he captioned a BBC video.

BBC head of commissioning factual and factual entertainment David Brindley echoed the team’s excitement for the project, revealing that the two-part special would be aired later this year.

He shared: “This will be one of DIY SOS’s most important builds.

“It’s great news that the team have been able to work with the local community to find a site and a design that will leave a lasting legacy for all to share.

“I’m delighted we’re able to share the story of this ambitious undertaking later this year on BBC ONE.”

FOR Ben Saunders and Wade Clasohm, there was a light-hearted moment in the minutes after their Clifford Park fall on April 8 that broke the tension — fleetingly — of a plight both immediately knew they were destined for.

“I was lying there. I didn’t actually know Wade was in the same situation as me,” Saunders said.

“People were saying breathe deeply, don’t move. They were doing this over and over again. I had broken all my ribs, punctured my lungs, broke my diaphragm and my sternum. I kept thinking there’s two things I can’t do; one, breathe deeply and; two, move, because I’d broken my back.

“I was shouting a bit loud, then I heard Wade pipe up and say ‘shit, stop your complaining, you’re not the only one.’ He’s four metres away in the same predicament. It lightened the mood of a very serious situation.”

The story of Clasohm and Saunders, sadly, is not an irregular one. No less than 882 jockeys have lost their lives on Australian racetracks.

This coming Saturday is National Jockey Celebration Day, an event the honours the fallen and injured riders of racing.

The National Jockeys Trust was set up in 2004 to help the families of deceased and injured riders like the Toowoomba duo.

Saunders and Clasohm were not close friends before the accident; merely work acquaintances with a mutual respect for one another’s ability.

They now share a special bond after the simultaneous fall that has left both to a life confined to a wheelchair.

“Not many people go through this and I wouldn’t recommend it!” Clasohm said.

“I will second that,” Saunders said before noting the different approach the two of them have had since the accident.

“There’s been certain times … my glass is always half full and Wadey’s is half empty. He’s been the more realistic one. There’s been times where I’d like to think I’ve dragged him up a bit out of the doldrums, but there’s been times where he’s put the head check on me and dragged me back to reality.”

Saunders spent nearly four days in an induced coma, whereas Clasohm said his pain wasn’t as bad because his break was higher up in the body.

“The next thing I see him friggin’ pop up in a wheelchair,” Clasohm said.

“He was dirty,” Saunders noted.

“But useless in it,” Clasohm retorts.

Saunders has been out of hospital for just over three weeks, while Clasohm is on “weekend passes” only.

“I’m pretty well at a stage where I could go home, but I’m just starting to renovate my house and I’ve got nowhere practically to go,” he said.

“I’m out on acreage. It’s just a hard position to stay somewhere, so I might be two to three months away from being home.”

Saunders still suffers from nerve pain and both have hypersensitivity. Those conditions will remain with them for life.

“There’s a lot of things people don’t think about, unless you’re in the circumstances. You just have to learn how to take care of yourself,” Clasohm says.

“A lot of people see someone in a wheelchair and think they’ve broken their back, but there’s so much more to it. It adds a lot of time to your day that you previously took for granted.”

Saunders revealed “it puts a tax on your family” and he has been diligent in learning good techniques in a bid to try and maintain some form of independence.

“Otherwise your wife or carer is going to have to do everything for you,” he said.

Putting on shoes and socks was a simple activity that Saunders soon learned wasn’t so straightforward anymore when he snapped his leg with his own hands just before he was scheduled to leave hospital.

“I broke my femur,” he said.

“Through the whole ordeal, that was the lowest point (Wade says “it was probably my highest”). How on earth could you possibly break your own leg?”

So what does the future hold?

Clasohm said he had considered training and had even been offered a couple of horses to train, but feels it’s not feasible and will instead take more time to decide what he wants to do next.

“You basically have to employ someone to do everything for you. All I could do is point and I didn’t want to become that type of trainer. I wanted to ride work and do that myself,” he said.

“I think I will just start slow, have a few animals on my farm and see what eventuates.”

Saunders is keen to get official recognition for the years he spent as course manager at Clifford Park, so that it might lead to something in the horticultural field.

“I want to get a few acknowledgments for what I’ve done,” he said.

“My next endeavour is probably working on a couple of accreditations that might help the resume of a man in a wheelchair.”

Both say they have no resentment towards the racing industry, although there is a bitter irony for Clasohm.

“I went back to riding because I had a bad back. So I used to do it to keep my back good, because it was good for your core and now I don’t have a bloody core!

“So it didn’t really fix the problem in the end, but it was good while it lasted.

“We were just unlucky on the day. We did all the right things Ben and I, we were just unlucky. It was bad luck.”

Both have been overwhelmed by the level of support, from the National Jockeys Trust in the first instance, to the huge fundraiser at Clifford Park which raised almost $ 200,000 to Brendon Smith’s Fight night and other various fundraising activities.

They would however like to see more done to protect track riders, from the education of young horses to the system of how they are registered.

“They don’t spend enough money on breaking horses these days. They cut a few corners and the track rider has to deal with it,” Clasohm said.

“We were just lucky we were jockeys previously. If we weren’t it would have been a lot harder.”

Ben says “work riders are an integral part of the sport.”

“There’s occasion where I find a professional work rider should be covered like a jockey,” Ben said.

Gloves go on for good cause

JOCKEYS got into the fundraising spirit at a fight night last week organised by prominent Toowoomba trainer and promoter Brendon Smith to raise funds for Wade Clasohm and Ben Saunders.

Smith put the night together and kicked off the fund with $ 2000 of his own.

By the end of the night, the fundraiser had put together nearly $ 10,000 for the riders

Brooke Stower was the driving force behind getting the jockeys involved.

“Brendon Smith showed the same courtesy to Kristy Banks and across the two sports, there’s always been a close relationship, especially with Brendon. He loves to put on a function for someone in need,” Saunders said.

The pair rated Kenji Yoshida the pick of the jockeys in the ring, while Clasohm said Luke Rolls was “the tidiest”. Both agreed though that Josh Oliver was the most entertaining.

“He threw the haymakers from everywhere,” Saunders said.

A few of Oliver’s swings must have hit the mark, because the team comprising himself, Beau Appo and Stower took out the inaugural Ben Saunders and Wade Clasohm Cup.

The event was part of Smith’s ‘TGW & Smithy Bring the Big Fights 17’ card at Rumours International Toowoomba, where highlight’s included a second round knockout win to Kostya Tszyu’s highly promising son Tim and an Australian title between Rivan Cesaire and Jamie Hilt, which Cesaire won on points.
