Russia has halted natural-gas flows to Europe via a key pipeline amid the war in Ukraine, but the move may end up biting itself, according to Bloomberg, citing an internal document prepared for the Russian government.
While Russia is an energy giant, most of its exports go to European customers. In 2021, Europe snapped up about half of Russia's oil products and three-quarters of its natural gas, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
Thus, a fall in exports to Europe means Russian natural-gas production would have to fall to better meet lower shipment needs. This would, in turn, hit Moscow's plans to boost domestic gas supplies, per Bloomberg, citing the report.
Additionally, a complete halt in natural-gas supplies to Europe could cost the Kremlin as much as 400 billion rubles, or $ 6.6 billion, a year in tax revenues, according to Russia's internal report, per the media outlet. While Russia is trying to diversify its customer base, new markets will not be able to make up lost sales from European customers in the medium term.
As Europe is also set to ban most Russian oil imports from the end of 2022, the demand slump could lead to a deep cut in Russian production, causing a shortage of the fuel domestically, Bloomberg reported, citing the internal report.
Overall, the internal Russian report paints a gloomy picture of the country's economy amid sweeping sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine — which contrasts sharply with more upbeat data from the Kremlin in recent months.
The situation could worsen if the world enters a recession. That's because Russia would've already lost its stable European market, causing it to become a "swing supplier" of energy products — with the country having to adjust and adapt its output to changing market demands, according to the report.
This would mean that a plunge in demand for Russian oil products could have an adverse economic impact, such as pushing up inflation in the country and putting downward pressure on the ruble, the report warned, per Bloomberg.

]]>E-commerce companies will no longer be able to sell products from companies in which they have an equity interest, nor will they be able to form exclusive agreements with sellers or apply cash-back offers and other incentives to affiliate sellers differently than they apply to non-affiliates, according to new rules which take effect February 1.
The new rules are aimed at clamping down on monopolistic behavior by gargantuan transnational e-tailers. Amazon, Flipkart and other large companies are currently able to undercut the prices of their competitors by buying products in bulk through companies they control and re-selling to affiliates, which then set their prices low enough to drive non-affiliated firms out of the market.
Indian retailers, concerned that their days are numbered with such “predatory pricing” practices dominating the market, successfully pushed back with a series of anti-trust petitions earlier this year that have culminated in the new regulations.
The All India Online Vendors Association (AIOVA) filed a petition in October with the Competition Commission of India, the body charged with enforcing anti-trust matters, alleging that Amazon gives preferential treatment to those sellers in which it has an equity interest. The group filed a similar petition against Flipkart in May.
The Confederation of All India Traders had objected to Walmart’s $ 16 billion acquisition of Flipkart in May, warning that the move would create exactly the “unfair competition” and “predatory pricing” the new rules seek to address. CAIT secretary general approvingly stated that the new rules, if implemented in full, would put an “embargo on the tactics adopted by the global players to control and dominate retail trade in India through e-commerce.”
Beefed-up regulations have come not a minute too soon, with Google introducing Google Shopping to India earlier this month.

US President Donald Trump called on Saudi Arabia to lift its blockade of Yemen and “completely allow food, fuel, water and medicine to reach the Yemeni people who desperately need it.” In a statement issued by the White House on Wednesday, Trump said this “must be done for humanitarian reasons immediately.” On Tuesday, the UN called for a humanitarian truce to allow for the delivery of aid to civilians trapped in the Yemeni capital Sana’a.

President Donald Trump has announced the extension of the trade embargo against Cuba for another year after rolling back much of the previous administration’s policies that reopened American investment and travel policy.
The White House issued the presidential memorandum Friday, extending the ban under the Trading with the Enemy Act on Cuba until September 14, 2018.

The memo states the embargo against the former Cold War enemy, which prevents American companies from importing goods from Cuba or exporting goods to the island nation, has been extended “in the national interest of the United States.”
The US first cut diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1961 following the socialist revolution led by late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. In the decades that followed, Washington imposed a wide range of sanctions on the island state, banning Americans from traveling to the island nation just 90 miles south of Florida.
Under former President Barack Obama, relations between the US and Cuba began to thaw. The Cuban embassy reopened in Washington for the first time in 50 years and US businesses established 26 new agreements with the Cuban government, allowing airliners and cruise lines to provide travel to and from the island.
During his time in office, Obama urged Congress to lift the embargo, which he called “a burden on the Americans who want to work and do business or invest here in Cuba” according to a White House transcript of a 2016 speech he made in Havana.
However, in 2016, Obama also issued a memo calling for the embargo against Cuba to be extended into September, 2017. In his memo, Obama similarly stated the embargo was in “the national interest of the United States.”
After three years of warming relations between the US and Cuba, Trump reversed much of Obama’s policies, imposing trade and travel restrictions on the island nation again.

In February 2011, in the wake of the Western-backed uprising against longtime Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the UN Security Council imposed an arms embargo, prohibiting the supply of arms and military equipment to and from the North African country.
Following the fall and assassination of Gaddafi, varying factions have been striving to control the remnants of what’s left of Libya. However, only the internationally-recognized Tripoli-based Government of the National Accord (GNA) can receive weapon supplies and only upon the approval of a UN Security Council committee.
Haftar commands the self-styled National Libyan Army, which is the main force on the ground allied with the Tobruk-based government that controls large territories in the east and south of Libya which has, so far, refused to endorse the UN-backed unity government. It therefore remains under the arms embargo and lacks supplies to engage pockets of terrorists who still ravage parts of the country.
During the Libyan strongman’s third visit to Russia, Haftar once again asked for Moscow’s help in securing military supplies.
“Russia is a global power. It is an influential figure on the international stage. That’s why we asked it to help amend the unfair restrictions against us, related to arms supply to Libya. We’ve voiced our desire honestly, and Russia said that it’ll do its best to help us,” Haftar told RT Arabic in an exclusive interview.
No concrete deals were signed during the visit, but when asked if the he had managed to secure an agreement with Moscow after his meeting with Russian defense minister Sergey Shoigu, Haftar replied that some “progress” has been made.
“I believe that we have agreed on what we need. The Russian side gave a positive response. I think that everything is going well,” Haftar said.
“Russia is trying to find suitable solutions to provide us with everything we need at the right time,” Haftar added.
Moving on to human trafficking and the migrant crisis which has turned war-torn Libya into one of the main transit hubs to Europe, Haftar criticized the EU’s approach, calling it a form of “colonization.” Earlier, Italy’s parliament authorized the country’s navy to carry out missions in Libyan waters to intercept migrant boats and prevent it from reaching European shores. In addition, the EU launched a military operation known as Operation Sophia which focuses on eliminating established smuggling routes in the Mediterranean.
“They [Europeans] erected a barrier of sorts on the territorial waters borders to return any migrants back to the Libyan shores. It’s certainly an absolutely wrong approach, very strange approach,” Haftar said. “They want to gather all the migrants on Libya’s shore. It’s a migration, after all, it should not be turned into colonization.”
Haftar promised to protect the national sovereignty of Libya if any of the European ships infringe on the country’s maritime borders. At the same time, he stressed that his forces are capable of reducing the flow of refugees, as long as EU is willing to help financially.
“We’ve discussed the plan [with EU nations] which focuses on protection of Libyan borders. The plan should prevent any illegal infiltration into Libyan territory. To enact the plan we need some 4,000 people. We’ll train the men, certainly. But technical outfitting the border requires the participation of another side, to say the least,” Haftar told RT, noting that the plan requires investment of an estimated $ 20 billion over the next two decades.

“We’re not the only transit country. Italy, France, Spain, Greece, for example, are also transit countries for migrants. At the same time, the countries are able to accommodate a number of migrants on their territories. That’s why Europe must participate in providing the Libyan border guards with everything necessary. It’s the Europeans who must be responsible for it.”

Haftar also warned the international community against any military interference in Libya which might result in the further collapse of the already fractured state.
“Maybe someone will say that the Libyan state is weak, and you can break off a piece from Libya. Yes, our state is not strong. But we will not surrender a single inch of our land. We will rather die than live in humiliation on our own land,” Haftar emphasized.

“Given the uncertainty of the situation in Libya, it would be premature to talk about a full or partial lifting of the weapons embargo [imposed] against Libya,” Ilyichev said at the UN Security Council meeting dedicated to the country’s crisis.
He went on to say that any proposals should be “strictly linked” to the security situation in the North African country. More than six years after the start of the Arab Spring, Libya “is still going through a painful recovery” from a heavy blow dealt to it by international intervention and the toppling of its former leader, Muammar Gaddafi, the Russian envoy said.
Last year, western powers, including the US, considered partially lifting the embargo to help the UN-backed government in Tripoli tackle security challenges in the war-torn state.
Ilyichev expressed his regret over the fact that, “despite the efforts undertaken by the international community to settle the Libyan crisis, the situation [there] is not changing for the better” and expressed Moscow’s concern over the fact that “the fragmentation of government” still “impedes the resolution of numerous issues in the area of security and the social economic area.”
He particularly drew attention to the fact that Libya is still divided between a Tobruk-based parliament and the UN-backed unity government in Tripoli, which are still engaged in a bitter confrontation that had led to a “paralysis of the government system.”
The two centers of power particularly failed to fully implement the provisions of the UN-backed agreement they signed in December 2015, Ilyichev said, adding that the main goal of that deal has not been achieved so far as the “text of the constitution has not been finalized and the general elections have not taken place.”
He went on to say that the UN-backed unity government is still “unable to significantly broaden its support and become a power body that is trusted by everyone in the country” and cannot even take control over the Libyan capital of Tripoli, which is still “controlled by many armed groups, not all of which are loyal to the [authorities].”
“The composition of the Government of the National Accord still has not been endorsed by the [Tobruk-based] House of Representatives as the UN-supported agreements require,” he said as the legislative body voted to denounce the 2015 UN-backed treaty in March.
The Russian envoy also questioned the goals behind the process of establishing the so-called Libyan Presidential Guard by saying that it is “unclear how the creation of this structure relates to the key issue of creation of a unified security apparatus.”
At the same time, he called on the international community and Libyan political forces not to “marginalize” the Libyan National Army, which could still form a “basis for the creation of the future unified armed forces” of Libya and become a reliable partner for the international community dealing in the security issues.
In the meantime, the political and security “vacuum” in Libya is used by terrorist groups, such as Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL) and Al Qaeda that continue to build their presence in some Libyan regions and support local extremist groups linked to them, Ilyichev said. He pointed out that the disastrous security situation in the country could also constitute a broader terrorist threat for the region as the ongoing counterterrorism activities only force the extremists to move to other parts of the country and create sleeper cells.

“The negative impact of the situation in Libya is… felt in Europe as well” as it “has to deal with the waves of illegal migrants, who are trying to move over to the European continent and do it through the Libyan territory,” the Russian envoy added.
He then said that those who genuinely seek to restore peace and stability in Libya should avoid any one-sided approaches and criticized the countries that “pit some Libyans against others” by supporting Tripoli in its struggle against Tobruk by saying that they are “making a mistake.”
“We should not leave anyone behind as it is done by the western countries when they introduce unilateral sanctions,” he said, adding that such “one-sided approaches are the reasons why the political process [in Libya] has stalled.”
