The series which first aired in February 1973 is being investigated by the BBC after an episode was repeated on BBC Two and a viewer complained about the language used. Before the episode aired, the BBC shared a warning, telling viewers the instalment may contain outdated language.

The episode in question saw Frank Spencer comment: “I’m the chief of the pixies, I’m the friend of all the little boys and girls.”

“Oh no you’re not, you’re a p**f,” a boy yelled at Frank.

Frank responded: “I beg your pardon, block your ears!”

A complaint from a viewer led the BBC to investigate but an internal watchdog decided it did not breach editorial guidelines.

“But you’re sitting there and it’s absolutely… really stressful.”

Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em ran from 1973 until its third series in 1978 and returned in 2016 for a Sports Relief special.

It’s not the only BBC series to face backlash in recent months.

Little Britain, Blackadder and The League of Gentleman have also come under fire for the language used.

The BBC was also slammed in January after they aired Grease and viewers complained John Travolta’s character Danny was racist, homophobic and used bullying language.

The 1978 classic is one of the most popular films but when it aired on BBC One on Boxing Day, it was slammed by viewers with many viewers writing movements such as #MeToo.

One viewer posted on Twitter: “The drive-in/botched make-out session between Danny and Sandy hasn’t aged well. Film kinda glides right into song (“Sandy”) before viewers register the date rapey vibe of the scene they just saw #Grease.”

Another commented: “Ahhh man. Just watching #Grease one of my favourite films and it’s so of its time. Misogynistic, sexist and a bit rapey.”

A third shared: “Grease is far too sexist and overly white and should be banned from the screen. It is nearly 2021 after all.”

At least, that’s what former Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen implied in March, shortly before packing his bags and hitting the road. The premium sedan market stands to grow along with the rest of that country’s appetite for high-zoot models, he said, even though the overall take […]

Feed ’em to the lions: Danish zoos reportedly let hungry predators eat visitors' pets https://briefnews.eu/feed-em-to-the-lions-danish-zoos-reportedly-let-hungry-predators-eat-visitors-pets/ https://briefnews.eu/feed-em-to-the-lions-danish-zoos-reportedly-let-hungry-predators-eat-visitors-pets/#respond Wed, 27 Dec 2017 02:49:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/feed-em-to-the-lions-danish-zoos-reportedly-let-hungry-predators-eat-visitors-pets/

If your old pet has to be put down anyway, why not feed it to a hungry lion? That’s an option now on offer at two Danish zoos, local media report, sparking outrage from animal rights activists.

Visitors to Copenhagen zoo, no stranger to controversy, and Givskud Zoo, some 20 km from the city of Vejle in central Denmark, may now have to brace themselves for the bloody spectacle of cute little hamsters and bunny rabbits being savagely ripped to shreds by an apex predator. This unusual scheme, which has come under fire for its cruelty, has been initiated by the two zoos to give their carnivores a more varied diet as well as to teach children about the animals’ true nature.

“It’s good for the animals to have a varied diet, so it’s not always a horse or a cow. Plus there is fur that is fun to chew on, and their intestines are super-healthy for them,” Copenhagen zookeeper Sophie Eller told Denmark’s TV2 channel.

“People are emotional, so we spend a lot of time telling them what is about to happen. I think people would prefer something meaningful, rather than just having them [pets] put down and incinerated.”

“When people come here with their rabbits, it is to have them put down. We don’t want to hide it from children,” added Givskud Zoo director Richard Osterballe, claiming that the measure wasn’t just another way for people to kill off their pets.

Not all pets are fit to be a lion’s dinner – the zoos draw the line at cats and dogs, as they can’t be found in the wild, while horses have to go on a three-month waiting list due to limited space. But while certainly animals meet brutal and painful deaths in nature, to suffer such a fate at the hands of humans who are supposed to love and care for them is needlessly cruel, PETA’s Director of International Programs Mimi Bekhechi told RT.

“The idea of taking your animal companion to the zoo to be served as a lion’s dinner is absolutely sickening. It can show people what zoos are really about. They are not institutions that care about animals, they are institutions that care about making money,” Bekhechi said.

“When you are the guardian for an animal, there is a responsibility that comes along with that and that’s a responsibility to protect it, to care for that animal, and when the time comes to make sure the animal won’t suffer.”

The Copenhagen zoo has come under fire for its seemingly callous treatment of animals before. In 2014 it publicly killed and dissected a healthy giraffe named Marcus “to avoid inbreeding,” and then later put down two lions and their cubs to make room for a new male lion.

Grab ‘em by the puppet! Donald Trump immortalized as dummy in ‘Spitting Image’ comeback https://briefnews.eu/grab-em-by-the-puppet-donald-trump-immortalized-as-dummy-in-spitting-image-comeback/ https://briefnews.eu/grab-em-by-the-puppet-donald-trump-immortalized-as-dummy-in-spitting-image-comeback/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 17:49:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/grab-em-by-the-puppet-donald-trump-immortalized-as-dummy-in-spitting-image-comeback/

Donald Trump is a puppet. No, not on the Kremlin payroll. He’s been immortalized in all his rubbery glory by the artist behind ‘Spitting Image,’ the hit British comedy show gunning for a momentous return, this time on US television.

The American spin-off of the British show will return for US audiences, although parts will be filmed in the UK, co-creator Roger Law has revealed. US network NBC approached the artist, Law said, and production company Avalon has begun talks about the show’s reboot.

President Trump, Law said, is a major inspiration for firing up the show once again.

“Quite what you do I’m not sure because he satirizes his f****** self… They seem to be quite serious, we’ve had a puppet made,” he said.

“I am a reformed old gentleman but I get very angry about things. It’s puppets, not people, so you can get away with murder. You could have a pussy-grabbing sketch for Christ’s sake.”

Those behind the show are hoping Trump may become a fan and Tweet about it. Law said: “That’ll get a few more viewers… He spends six hours a day watching television so of course he’ll watch it.”

The presidential puppet has already been created and will go on display at Norwich’s Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts as part of a retrospective of the artist’s work.

Spitting Image ran for 13 years in the 1980s and 90s. Law and Peter Fluck created the parody-packed show mocking figures such as Margaret Thatcher and Arthur Scargill.

The Norwich exhibition ‘Roger Law: From Satire to Ceramics’ will include puppets, ceramics and other work by Law. The artist said having the exhibit is like having “all these images you’ve done in the past come back to haunt you.”

It will run from November 18 until April 3, 2018, at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in the University of East Anglia, Norwich.

AFL Grand Final: Eat ‘em alive, Tigers https://briefnews.eu/afl-grand-final-eat-em-alive-tigers/ https://briefnews.eu/afl-grand-final-eat-em-alive-tigers/#respond Fri, 29 Sep 2017 19:09:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/afl-grand-final-eat-em-alive-tigers/ RICHMOND will today carry the hopes and dreams of long-suffering fans into the AFL Grand Final with the chance of ending a 37-year premiership drought.

Authorities expect so many fans to flock to the MCG, Richmond and Punt Rd Oval that they are considering shutting down Punt Rd and Swan St to all traffic following the Tigers’ clash with Adelaide. Tigerland is set to become party central as Richmond supporters toast their first Grand Final appearance since 1982 and a chance to win their first flag since 1980.

Police will be out in force, launching a security blitz in and around the MCG and installing bollards on roads leading to the ground in response to global terror fears.

Richmond captain Trent Cotchin said the Tigers were primed for the occasion.

“We’ve worked hard for the opportunity to play,’’ he said.

SECURITY

POLICE don’t expect a terror or security threat at Saturday’s AFL Grand Final in Melbourne but they will be out in force on the day anyway.

Victoria Police will deploy thousands of police officers across the state and around Melbourne to keep fans safe, Victorian Police Minister Lisa Neville says.

“There is absolutely no advice or evidence to suggest there is any terrorism risk for this Grand Final,” Ms Neville told reporters.

Meanwhile, police officers patrolling the outskirts of the MCG after the grand final will have the power to shut down roads to cars if crowds misbehave.

Victoria Police announced a blitz on drivers and pedestrians ahead of the long weekend.

Ms Neville said the preference was to keep roads open to allow vehicle and pedestrian flow.

But officers could halt traffic in an emergency or if an unexpected crowd event compromised safety.

WEATHER

FOOTY fans won’t let their spirits be dampened by rain falling during the AFL Grand Final.

Showers will fall on Saturday morning and into the afternoon as it reaches a top of 16C.

There is some chance of rain as the Tigers try to break their 37-year premiership drought.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Stephen King said there was a 30 to 40 per cent chance showers — up to 2mm — would fall during the big game at 2.30pm.

He said the showers would be “annoying” and would not deliver significant rainfall.

Both Richmond and Adelaide have played well in wet weather this year.

Fans heading into the ‘G before the match may be caught in a light shower, while those hanging around to see The Killers should be in the clear.

TRANSPORT

FREE tram rides will be run from the CBD to MCG for this weekend’s clash between the Tigers and Crows.

The Free Tram Zone will be extended to get people to their pre-match celebrations from Wednesday 27 running until after the match.

And fares on Grand Final Saturday will be capped to $ 6 to encourage people to take public transport.

Extra services will also be put on over the weekend to help fans get to the pre and post match celebrations, with 41 added train trips on Grand Final Saturday.

The extended Free Tram Zone covers stops on Wellington Parade, at Rod Laver Arena and at the MCG and Hisense Arena.

ENTERTAINMENT

Las Vegas band The Killers have been confirmed as this year’s Grand Final entertainment.

They will perform as the pre-game entertainment at the MCG before playing again at the “Premiership Party” after the big match on September 30.

Mike Brady will also perform his famous song ‘Up There Cazaly’ before Australia’s 2016 Eurovision contestant Dami Im takes to the stage to sing the national anthem just before the opening bounce.

The Killers may have never watched a game of AFL, but they have definitely seen Meat Loaf’s 2011 trainwreck grand final performance.

“We did see it, I watched it,” lead singer Brandon Flowers told reporters on Thursday.

“Poor Meat Loaf. I feel bad for Meat Loaf.”

The Killers, famous for hits including Mr Brightside and When You Were Young, are excited but nervous to play at footy’s big gig on Saturday when Richmond takes on Adelaide.

“We’re always up for a challenge,” drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jnr said.

The band has assured fans, including AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, that they will play their biggest hits as well as songs from their new album, Wonderful Wonderful.

PARKING

ONE of Melbourne’s great annual sporting traditions has been given the boot amid a ban on parking outside the MCG for the AFL grand final.

The time-honoured MCG car boot barbecue has been given the chop for Saturday due to security and safety concerns, MCC venue and events services general manager Gerard Griffin confirmed.

“There’s no public parking in Yarra Park so as a consequence there’s no option of bringing gas barbecues in,” he said, adding fans could still use fixed cook-tops in the area.

A limited number of spaces will be available for disability permit holders.

Entry will be via Gate 5 on Punt Road from 4.00am and spaces are expected to fill very early.

Public patrons, MCC members and AFL members will need to use public transport to get to the MCG.

The unavailability of public parking also means that fans will not be able to drive into Yarra Park and set-up a portable barbecue before the game.

Public barbecues in the park near Jolimont Station and Punt Road Oval will still be operational.

MCC has partnered with CBD car park operator Le Garage at 114 Flinders Street to offer fans $ 8 parking on grand final day if they scan their event ticket or membership card at the pay station.

Footy fans who plan on driving to the match can also book parking at Melbourne and Olympic Park.

TIME GATES OPEN

The MMC Reserve gates open at 8am, while the AFL Reserve and public gates open at 9.30am.

This Week In Trailers: Mean Dreams, Betting on Zero, Jawbone, Return to Return to Nuke ‘Em High Aka Vol. 2 https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-mean-dreams-betting-on-zero-jawbone-return-to-return-to-nuke-em-high-aka-vol-2/ https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-mean-dreams-betting-on-zero-jawbone-return-to-return-to-nuke-em-high-aka-vol-2/#respond Sat, 18 Feb 2017 21:06:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-mean-dreams-betting-on-zero-jawbone-return-to-return-to-nuke-em-high-aka-vol-2/ Green Band Trailer

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we see that Chet has moved on from bullying Wyatt to just killing people, take another lap around that Herbalife doc, marvel at Ray Winstone, and then extol the perverted virtues of Lloyd Kaufman.

Mean Dreams Trailer

Soft spot.

It’s right there in my heart for Bill Paxton. The guy has been a touchstone through the years as I’ve seen him go from Weird Science, to Aliens, to True Lies, Frailty, Big Love, and on it goes. He’s endured and this trailer shows you why: he can chew up scenery like no one else. He can be comedic relief or the heavy and he’s bringing something strong here. This may not get any large scale attention but if this trailer can be believed this could be a small gem to seek out and watch the man at work.

Jawbone Trailer

Don’t really have strong feelings about the sport of boxing.

Yeah, Rocky, Creed, all that, but I could not care less about the sport of boxing than I am about the people who inhabit its orbit. Director Thomas Q. Napper smartly focuses less on the pugilistic activities in the ring and gives us, instead, more time with Ray Winstone. It really is about a man’s struggles and this is just under the radar enough where this is not going to be saved by high profile talent alone; it will need to win on its own merits.

Return to Return to Nuke ‘Em High Aka Vol. 2 Trailer (NSFW)

God bless Lloyd Kaufman.

As many times as I’ve seen the guy on TV or at Comic-Con, the man never relents and never purports to be anything other than what he is and that is he’s a great salesman. I am sorry/not sorry that I first came upon his brand of filmmaking was when I was 12 or 13 and discovered The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke ‘Em High. These movies still hold up for what they are because they’re so unabashedly ridiculous and schlocky and absurd that it makes complete sense a 12 year-old buy would find these entertaining. Fast forward 30 years and here we are, same as it ever was. I don’t need to explain what you’ll find here because you already know: crazy gore and a whole lot of indecency. Just the way I like it.

Betting on Zero Teaser

Yeah, I talked about this one already some months ago.

I’m bringing this one up again because I’m fascinated by the story. You have a billionaire who is hellbent on making his opinion known about a business he believes is a pyramid scheme. Really, that’s it but the trailer again shows that the context here isn’t just about some well-heeled dudes battling it out in the boardroom, it’s about people who serve, and served, as the business’ backbone and what destruction it has wrought in its wake. Some may not find this really engaging but, again, when it comes to guys with dollars to throw around and want to make a fight very public, I’m all for listening about what’s up a billionaire’s craw so bad.

Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers to possibly be included in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

In case you missed them, here are the other trailers we covered at /Film this week:

Artificial intelligence has enjoyed some remarkable online-gaming victories in recent years, though usually in slower games with clear—if incredibly multi-threaded—rule systems. On Monday, the robots pushed ahead with a slightly more remarkable online-gaming victory over their puny human masters when an AI program won big at Texas Hold ‘Em poker.

A lengthy tournament of Hold ‘Em—specifically, the heads-up, no-limit variety—ended with victory for Libratus, an AI program developed by a professor and PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University. Libratus emerged victorious after 120,000 combined hands of poker played against four human online-poker pros. Libratus’ $ 1.7 million margin of victory, combined with so many hands, clears the “Brains Vs. Artificial Intelligence” tournament’s primary bar: victory with statistical significance.

In spite of Texas Hold ‘Em’s intriguing, bluff-related wrinkles, Libratus seems to have bluffers figured out. Carnegie Mellon’s declared design of the AI program describes an emphasis on “algorithms [used] to analyze the rules of poker and set its own strategy”—with, you know, 15 million super-computing hours dedicated to that aim. Libratus’ primary computer, named Bridges, performed additional routines both during live play and in the nighttime hours following each day of play.
