The MTV Video Music Awards’ “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” shall remain named the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award” — and the next recipient of the accolade has been announced.

Rapper Missy Elliott will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 VMAs, to be held Monday, Aug. 26 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. and air live on MTV; comedian/actor Sebastian Maniscalco will serve as host.

Elliott will also perform live during the telecast, marking her first return to the VMAs stage since 2003.

With a legacy that spans three decades and which has influenced other artists to elevate themselves, “Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” says Bruce Gillmer, Head of Music & Music Talent at Viacom. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

The equivalent to a lifetime achievement honor, the first Vanguard Awards were handed out in 1984 at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards — to David Bowie, The Beatles, and A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester. In 1991, three years after Jackson himself was bestowed with the award, it was renamed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. In July, unnamed sources alleged to Page Six that there had been “heated discussion at the network” about whether to keep Jackson’s name attached to the prize, in the wake of the damning but disputed Leaving Neverland documentary. Hours into a TVLine poll, 60 percent said that MTV should not remove Jackson’s name; a day later, that vote of support swelled, finally settling in at 91 percent.

News of Elliott being tapped for the Vanguard Award was announced via a press release that was “flipped and reversed,” as seen below. Fortunately, a kind soul also provided it in readable format, saving us an awkward trip with a MacBook to the restroom mirror.

Drew Barrymore on the ET SEQUEL plans with Elliott and Gertie's children https://briefnews.eu/drew-barrymore-on-the-et-sequel-plans-with-elliott-and-gerties-children/ https://briefnews.eu/drew-barrymore-on-the-et-sequel-plans-with-elliott-and-gerties-children/#respond Fri, 30 Mar 2018 21:54:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/drew-barrymore-on-the-et-sequel-plans-with-elliott-and-gerties-children/

Over 35 years have passed but the classic story of a boy and his alien friend endures.

As Steven Spielberg releases Ready Player One, attention has turned again to the rumoured E.T. sequel. It is already known that Spielberg did turn in a ten-page plot outine for an E.T. sequel and it is very dark and a little weird.

Drew Barrymore was appearing on Watch What Happens Live when a caller put her on the spot.

Has the actress discussed it with Spielberg and would it feature the return of E.T. to help the children of brother and sister Elliott and Gertie?

Drew told host Andy Cohen: “I will say that in the early ’80s there was not a lot of talk of sequels, and because Steven Spielberg made Jaws and E.T. there was a lot of talk within his camp about sequels but he never wanted to make them, because he felt like what he did is just ‘as it should be.’

“I remember staying at his house when I was seven, because he was like a godfather to me and he said, ‘Nope, we’re never going to make a sequel, it’s just as it is.’

“That was his philosophy, so who was I to question it?”

The original sequel plot outline is still out there and it is extremely disturbing with torture scenes and evil aliens.

SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE DETAILS:

Spielberg originally wrote an outline for a sequel to Close Encounters called Watch The Skies, featuring a family being terrorised by evil aliens.

It was almost made and a script was started. When Universal pressured him for a sequel to E.T. he used the basis for Watch The Skies and teamed up again with E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathieson.

Together they delivered E.T. 2: Nocturnal Fears to the studio.

With hindsight fans will be happy it was never made.

The main plot points see evil, carnivorous albino aliens, who are a mutation of E.T.’s gentle race, land on Earth with a cargo hold full of other alien prisoners.

Elliott’s mum is now dating Peter Coyote’s Dr Keys while Elliott uses his old Speak-N-Spell communication device to try and contact his buddy and discovers something or someone is back. Elliott rushes into the woods at night with his brother and sister and their friends, where they are captured and tortured.

Somehow E.T. hears Elliott’s screams and rushes back to rescue them, defeat the evil aliens and banish them to the far end of the galaxy.

 • Paul Singer’s Elliott Management, a $ 34 billion hedge fund, is beating the drum again about an impending market crash.
 • Elliott has long raised concerns about market conditions.
 • “If you think the human race is in a better and more knowledgeable state than in the past, good luck to you,” Elliott wrote in its most recent client letter, which was seen by Business Insider.
 • “Our centered case is still that the prices of global debt instruments are significantly distorted (on the upside) by money-printing and artificially low interest rates, and that there will be some kind of significant downward price adjustment soon,” the letter said.

Elliott Management, a $ 34 billion hedge fund founded by billionaire Paul Singer, is once again beating the drum about an impending market crash.

In a January letter to clients seen by Business Insider, Elliott dedicated a little more than two pages to its thesis, starting the section by saying: “We like the word ‘dénouement’ better than ‘outcome,’ and it sounds way more sophisticated and nuanced than ‘the end is near’ or “the chickens are coming home to roost.”

‘Is it a time-bomb?’: Paul Singer’s Elliott Management is sounding the alarm on the global economy https://briefnews.eu/is-it-a-time-bomb-paul-singers-elliott-management-is-sounding-the-alarm-on-the-global-economy/ https://briefnews.eu/is-it-a-time-bomb-paul-singers-elliott-management-is-sounding-the-alarm-on-the-global-economy/#respond Sat, 11 Nov 2017 05:44:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-it-a-time-bomb-paul-singers-elliott-management-is-sounding-the-alarm-on-the-global-economy/ paul singerREUTERS/Steve Marcus

 • Billionaire hedge-fund manager and GOP donor Paul Singer sent a letter to clients stressing the need for economic growth. He also laid out why the US needs tax reform.
 • Republican lawmakers are planning a vast overhaul of the US tax system.
 • Singer was among the leading Republican critics of Trump during his campaign, and a website funded by Singer was reportedly involved in funding opposition research from a firm that later went on to produce the notorious Trump-Russia dossier.

Elliott Management, the hedge fund led by billionaire conservative donor Paul Singer, laid out in a private letter to clients why the developed world needs more growth to maintain social stability.

“The developed world needs more growth and a healthier balance between asset prices and middle-class employment opportunities and prospects,” Elliott said in a quarterly letter to clients, which was seen by Business Insider.

The letter added:

“Only more development can generate a reasonable prospect of paying the ever-mounting bills, and lower the temperature of the growing societal edginess regarding economic security and “inequality.” Growth is essential to fostering the sense of community and buy-in that are needed for social stability, the acceptance of the notion of private property, and the marginalization of fringe political parties and leaders. The clock is ticking (or is it a time-bomb?).”

Elliott cited a number of statistics on the US economy, saying that only 41% of high school dropouts are currently working, and that 15% of men aged 25 to 54 are out of work, versus 5% between 1945 and 1968.

“This has been an emergency for a long time, but it has not been addressed as such,” the letter said. “Many policymakers appear to feel that printing more money and keeping interest rates low, plus extending and enhancing benefits of all kinds (health care, student loan forgiveness, etc.), is good enough.”

The letter makes a case for US corporate tax reform, saying the “world is ever competitive” and “the historical assumption that customers will pay more for U.S. goods and services because they are ‘better’ is long gone.”

“The case for domestic tax reform (really, tax cuts) is not quite as clear, but it is nonetheless powerful,” the letter added.

“The tax cuts would be additionally helpful if they led to lower governmental spending, but good luck on that front,” the letter added. “Our view, considering the entire landscape, is that individual tax cuts would be an important catalyst of faster economic growth, and would help restore the balance between capital and labor.”

Republican lawmakers have released a tax plan that, if enacted, would be the country’s most sweeping tax change since the 1980s. Democrats charge that the plan would largely benefit the wealthy.

Elliott cautioned against raising government deficits, meanwhile. Here’s the excerpt:

“At present it appears that both political parties in the U.S. are (more or less) in favor of, or at least willing to accept, increased federal spending and higher deficits. … It is likely, based on the current state of play, that the tax legislation that may emerge from the Congressional “meat grinder” will deepen the spending/revenues deficit even after taking into account the expected increase in growth (and hence increased tax revenues) that tax rate cuts may create. While there is no “right time” to change profligate government spending, it is also true that kicking the can down the road (with ultimately unsustainable deficits) is a path to ruin.”

These are issues that Elliott has previously brought up, particularly tax reform, which the firm has detailed in previous client letters.

Singer was among the leading Republican critics of Trump during his campaign, though he later donated to the president’s inaugural fund and has made multiple visits to the White House.

A conservative website funded by Singer was reportedly involved in funding opposition research from a firm that later went on to produce the notorious Trump-Russia dossier. And Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist and current Breitbart News executive chairman, says he is now on a mission to destroy Singer, who runs $ 34 billion fund Elliott Management, according to Axios.

As of October 1, Elliott managed $ 34.1 billion, per the letter.

A spokesman for Elliott declined to comment.

A U.S. District Court judge has granted a preliminary injunction of Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension in a motion filed by the NFL Players’ Association, according to Austin Knoblauch of NFL.com.

The U.S. District Court in eastern Texas will now review the NFLPA’s petition to have Elliott’s suspension voided and to decide if the case moves to trial.

There is no timetable for the decision, however according to Ian Rapoport, it is now likely that Elliott will play the entire 2017 season as the case makes it way through the courts.

‘The Hero’ Review: Sam Elliott Shines in an Otherwise Middling Drama https://briefnews.eu/the-hero-review-sam-elliott-shines-in-an-otherwise-middling-drama/ https://briefnews.eu/the-hero-review-sam-elliott-shines-in-an-otherwise-middling-drama/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2017 02:46:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-hero-review-sam-elliott-shines-in-an-otherwise-middling-drama/ The Hero review

The Hero centers on an aging movie star who’s best remembered for his performance in a beloved western forty years earlier. It’s a vehicle written specifically for actor Sam Elliott, who, of course, has his own storied history in that genre and has embraced that vibe as a key part of his acting persona, even in films as divergent as Ghost Rider and The Big Lebowski. While The Hero doesn’t offer any particularly insightful observations about what it means to get older in Hollywood, it’s still a pleasure to watch Elliott – a perennial ensemble player since his made-for-TV movie heyday of the ’80s and ’90s – do terrific work as the clear lead of a film that lasers in on his sensibilities as a performer.

Elliott plays Lee Hayden, a 72-year-old actor whose glory days are behind him. He makes a living using his lustrous voice to record voiceovers for barbecue sauce commercials, but spends most of his days getting stoned with his drug dealer (Nick Offerman) and pining for a time when he had a better relationship with his estranged daughter (Krysten Ritter). But his dead end life is turned upside down when he meets Charlotte (Laura Prepon), an enigmatic woman in her 30s who isn’t like everyone else: since she hasn’t seen Lee’s famous western (also called The Hero), she sees him as the man he is instead of an icon. The two begin a relationship, something happens that put Lee back in the national spotlight, and their relationship takes an unforeseen twist; this is a film of simple pleasures, so I won’t go into further detail about story points in case you decide to seek it out for yourselves.

The most fascinating aspect of the movie is its depiction of hazy dream sequences, which are peppered throughout. In these moments, Lee is back on the set of The Hero, dressed in classic western regalia and replaying famous scenes. But he’s also aware that he’s on a set, and in the inquisitive way he searches through his trailer and the surrounding areas, it’s almost like he’s excavating his own memories. With a heightened color palette and a deliberate pacing that’s even slower than the rest of the film’s already-meandering drawl, these cinematic dreams are a cool stylistic flourish that spice up an otherwise straightforward drama.

Offerman has some nice comedic moments, and Prepon does a solid job keeping her character’s true intentions close to the vest, but it’s clear from the outset that this is Sam Elliott’s movie, and it’s a delight to see him so easily rise to the challenge of carrying the whole film on his back. He appears in nearly every frame, and it couldn’t have been easy to grapple with a story that’s so blatantly meta – especially when his character spends so much time failing, mired in guilt and doubt. Elliott successfully underplays nearly every emotion his character feels, resulting in a performance that’s profoundly sad yet hopeful; when a half-smile creeps out under that iconic mustache, you get the sense that everything will somehow be okay.

Sadly, co-writer/director Brett Haley (I’ll See You in My Dreams) seems content with dropping his star into a storytelling template so predictable you start to wonder what Elliott could do if he were given material that truly pushed him as an actor instead of a script that encourages him to lean in to his current persona. And it’s not only the story that’s full of cliches – the visuals are also a victim, returning over and over again to the rolling waves of the ocean as a shorthand stand-in for symbolic meaning.

Despite some cringeworthy moments – a love scene that goes on a bit too long, a drug-fueled acceptance speech at an awards show – the actor elevates the material and keeps the movie afloat, bringing a heft to something that, in lesser hands, might be so formulaic that it’s unwatchable. Thankfully, Elliott’s baritone voice and world-weary eyes go a long way to endearing an audience, no matter what he’s saying. Even listening to him record barbecue sauce commercials can put a smile on your face.

‘The Hero’ Trailer: Sam Elliott is a Western Icon Looking for a Comeback https://briefnews.eu/the-hero-trailer-sam-elliott-is-a-western-icon-looking-for-a-comeback/ https://briefnews.eu/the-hero-trailer-sam-elliott-is-a-western-icon-looking-for-a-comeback/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 22:33:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-hero-trailer-sam-elliott-is-a-western-icon-looking-for-a-comeback/ The Hero Trailer - Sam Elliott

Now that summer is getting closer, not only will we get the usual onslaught of studio blockbusters looking for box office dollars, but we’ll get plenty of indies looking to attract the niche audiences, including plenty of films that debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. One of those indies just debuted its first promising trailer.

The Hero follows Sam Elliott as Lee Hayden, a former western star past his prime at a point in his career when he’s receiving lifetime achievement awards while he’s still looking for one more career-defining role. Funnily enough, this leading turn for Sam Elliott is getting plenty of praise for being just that.

One can’t help but notice that most of the blurbs picked out from reviews are all praising Sam Elliott, and that’s mostly because the rest of the movie is rife with indie cliches. The Hollywood Reporter writes:

“The bottom line is that while the film is restrained and sensitively crafted hokum, it’s still hokum, and you may find it hard not to feel cheated; Elliott and Prepon create vivid characters who are summarily plugged into a male-weepie formula that leaves little room for complexity or idiosyncrasy.”

The good news is that it appears the lead performance from Sam Elliott elevates the movie. That same review also notes:

“Elliott succeeds in pulling you into Lee’s emotional orbit and holding you there even when the movie falters. It’s a low-key, largely reactive performance, and all the more moving for it: The actor’s most memorable moments don’t come via tantrums or tearful breakdowns, but in scenes where he simply looks and listens — wounded, hopeful, resilient and, yes, heroic.”

The Hero was one of the movies that I missed at Sundance, but I want to see it if only to hear Sam Elliott’s rich voice featured so prominently. In addition the supporting cast includes Laura Prepon, Krysten Ritter, Nick Offerman and Katharine Ross, directed by Brett Haley (I’ll See You in My Dreams).

Lee Hayden (Sam Elliott) is an aging Western icon with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him. He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking too much weed with his former-co-star-turned-dealer, Jeremy (Nick Offerman), until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus. He soon strikes up an exciting, contentious relationship with stand-up comic Charlotte (Laura Prepon), and he attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Lucy (Krysten Ritter), all while searching for one final role to cement his legacy.

The Hero opens on June 9.

COLLINGWOOD is expected to recall Jamie Elliott this week for it’s crucial clash against St Kilda.

The livewire small forward played full game in the VFL last week for the Magpies and is pushing for his first match in more than 12 months.

The Magpies aren’t expected to make many changes to the team that upset Sydney by one point last week at the SCG but would dearly love another avenue to goal against the Saints.

Meanwhile, the Saints will be without Jack Steven for the second straight week.

Steven suffered a punctured lung in the Round 2 loss to West Coast and failed to secure the OK from the Saints' medical team.

And as expected, Will Minson will not suit up for the Western Bulldogs on Good Friday.

A week after a journalist asked Luke Beveridge whether Minson was a chance to face the Kangaroos and Minson tweeting his preparedness, the Dogs are set to stick with Tom Campbell and Tom Boyd.

COLLINGWOOD forward Jamie Elliott took his first serious steps towards a long-awaited AFL return with a solid hitout in the Magpies’ intra-club match in sweltering conditions at Olympic Park on Wednesday night.

Elliott hasn’t played a match since the final round of 2015 and missed all of last season with a back injury that required surgery.

But the 24-year-old showed some positive signs, kicking two goals, providing much-needed spark across half-forward and, importantly, getting through the match without an issue.

The Magpies planned to play four quarters, but the sapping heat that pushed the mercury beyond 35 degrees meant the game was reduced to only three periods.

It was the last hit-out for the team ahead of next Thursday’s JLT Community Series opener against Essendon at Etihad Stadium.

Even though it was only an intra-club match, the game provided more than a few positives for the club going forward with a number of new faces and players returning from injury impressing.

Daniel Wells got through two quarters of the game, and while he still has some conditioning work ahead of him, he showed a few sparks before heading into the Holden Centre for extra training.

Returning half-backs Matt Scharenberg and Jackson Ramsay performed well in their comebacks from knee reconstructions; Will Hoskin-Elliott nailed two goals while Chris Mayne provided a contest in attack; and defenders Lynden Dunn and Henry Schade presented their case for inclusion in next week’s game.

Josh Daicos displayed great poise and promise in his first game in black and white, winning plenty of ball and sending a good vibe through the 2000-strong crowd when he slotted an impressive goal.

And the usual suspects – Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar and Taylor Adams – were relentless in their attack on the ball.

“The big thing for us was that we got through unscathed,” Collingwood assistant coach Brenton Sanderson said.

“You always get a bit nervous coming into an intra-club game because you are on the eve of the season and guys have had great summers and you pray no one gets hurt.

“The big ticks for us were Jamie Elliott getting through a full-game, we see Scharenberg and Ramsay play quite well after 12 months out of footy, Chris Mayne comes to a new club and fits into the chemistry of the forward line really well, and Will Hoskin-Elliott did some really good things forward and through the midfield.”

Sanderson said 18-year-old Daicos – the son of Collingwood champion Peter Daicos, who was at Olympic Park – brought a smile to the faces of the coaching staff with his showing last night.

“He looked really good,” he said.

“He looked like whatever grade he steps up to, he can handle it.”

“He looks poised and balanced and really composed, a bit like his dad. A couple of times today we smiled at each other when he had the footy in his hands.”

Wells looked a bit scratchy early on, but got better as the game progressed, though by his own admission is still behind most of his teammates in terms of his preparation.

“As soon as the siren went, (Wells) went in and was doing some conditioning work,” Sanderson said.

“We are still six weeks away from Round 1, I am sure we are going to get him close to cherry ripe by then. How many games he plays between then and now, I am not sure.”

The Magpies had up to a dozen players missing, including Lachlan Keeffe and Josh Thomas, who next week will be eligible to play after their two-year drug bans expire.
