We see Elisabeth Moss’ punk musician Becky Something rock out on stage before we ever hear her talk or watch her terrorize her entourage. It’s a simple yet important introductory gesture from writer/director Alex Ross Perry to kick off Her Smell. The song establishes the character’s performative flair prior to launching headfirst into the maelstrom she unleashes, providing crucial understanding for why her “business family” stands by her. Addicts, particularly talented ones, can draw people in with the allure of the very same narcissism that will later repel them.

Perry’s film, depicting five one-location scenes playing out in apparent real-time, recalls a more theatrical structure than a filmic one – Shakespearean, even, if you’re inclined to believe the film’s introduction at the New York Film Festival. The first three scenes comprise something of a “pre-intermission” first act with Moss’ Becky nearing total implosion under the weight of artistic frustration, substance abuse and general vanity. Cinematographer Sean Price Williams restlessly follows her as well as the coterie of bandmates, family members and other executives who manage to withstand her toxicity. It is they who manage to keep the entire group, Something She, from total combustion.

Yet nothing about this tightly wound backstage drama feels overly stagey. Perry’s creation is wholly cinematic making full use of the intimacy and claustrophobia that films provide so well. Her Smell gives Damien Chazelle’s First Man a serious run for its money as the fall festival film most likely to cause motion sickness with its furious camera movements and jarring editing. It’s all amplified by top-notch sound design that plants a low rumble underneath Becky’s reign of terror, like a brewing thunderstorm that’s about to unleash all hell on everyone below.

None of the bravura filmmaking would have the same stinging impact were it not for Elisabeth Moss. Her fierce, tormented performance is not afraid to lean into her bandmate Mari’s (Agyness Deyn) description of Becky – to know her is to come to hate her. It’s not your average self-destructive character, in part because Moss plays Becky with such propulsive energy that she remains blithely unaware of the damage left behind on her war path. Becky does not exist on some arbitrary continuum of “likeable” and “unlikeable” because Moss blows up that spectrum altogether. She simply charges forward the only way her character knows how and lets the trail of tears and blood speak for itself.

It seems a bit beside the point to speculate about whether or not Moss played Becky with sympathy because it’s not what Alex Ross Perry aims for in Her Smell – at least, not explicitly. Compassion for Becky comes as an organic byproduct of the honest in Moss’ portrayal. We have to see her at rock bottom to fully feel the film’s “post-intermission” second act as Becky claws her way toward redemption and recovery. The pivot from visceral to emotional works as well as it does because Moss captures the full range of experience her character endures.

In one of the film’s most affecting moments, Perry pushes the camera in slowly on Becky’s face as she watches a group of her acolytes perform in front of her. In the shot, Moss shows amusement, jealousy, anger, resentment – a full battery of contradictory sensations she won’t let herself slow down to sort out. Only when Becky begins to take a step back from the chaos of her life, even going so far as to refer to herself in third person so she can separate person from persona, can she take proper emotional inventory of her life. From this vantage point, she can finally appreciate the enormity of sacrifices made by everyone from her bandmates to her ex (Dan Stevens) to her manager (Eric Stoltz).

To Alex Ross Perry’s credit, this portion of Her Smell never reeks of cheap sentimentality, which is especially remarkable given the cynicism of his previous downbeat dramedies. It’s a fully authentic conclusion to a story of a prodigious musician’s precipitous fall and subdued rebirth. Great talents attract good people into their orbit, and those supporters do not simply fall out when the going gets tough. Accomplished musicians endure thanks to the resilience of their boosters.

When Elisabeth Moss and Alex Ross Perry team up together, you know you’re in for a hell of a performance from Moss. The pair first collaborated on 2015’s psychological thriller Queen of Earth, and now they’re reuniting for the maniacal rocker drama Her Smell.

Now, ahead of the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, you can get a glimpse at Moss’ no-holds-barred performance as a punk rocker hitting rock bottom in theHer Smell teaser clip.

Her Smell Teaser

With glitter smeared on her cheeks and smudged kohl lining her eyes, Elisabeth Moss looks like a punk rock diva from hell, as she rants and raves to a captive audience backstage after a show. The brief scene follows Becky mid-breakdown backstage, filmed in extreme close-ups that serve to unsettle and unbalance you — a staple of Ross Perry’s style.

Moss stars in Her Smell as Becky Something, a self-destructive rock star whose relationships with her bandmates, family, and fans suffer during her years-long war against alcoholism. She finds inspiration again when she becomes the mentor to a rising all-female band The Akergirls, but begins to crack under the pressure to succeed when her former bandmate begins to rise to stardom and she begins to fade into obscurity.

Moss gave a revelatory performance in her last collaboration with Ross Perry, but judging by what we’ve seen of Her Smell,  this latest film could easily top that. “[T]his was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Moss said in an interview ahead of the film’s TIFF premiere. “It was not fun a lot of the time. It was hard to be in that head space, and hard to be in that person, with all that chaos and craziness. Some things are more fun to play than others. And this was difficult. At the end, I was incredibly fulfilled and happy that I’d done the role. But when we were shooting it, it was not easy.”

Her Smell also stars Cara Delevingne and Amber Heard.

Here is the official synopsis for Her Smell:

The latest from Alex Ross Perry traces the psychology of an unforgettable woman under the influence. Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss, in a powerhouse performance), the influential lead singer of a popular ’90s alt-rock outfit, struggles with her demons as friends, family, and bandmates alike behold her unraveling through a prism of horror, empathy, and resentment. Perry tracks Becky’s self-destruction—and potential creative redemption—through snaking long takes (arguably some of DP Sean Price Williams’s finest work) in claustrophobic backstage hallways, garishly lit dressing rooms, and recording studios, and the film’s ensemble cast (including Cara Delevingne, Ashley Benson, Amber Heard, Virginia Madsen, Dan Stevens and Eric Stoltz) is impeccable in support of Moss’s rattling trip to the brink.

Tim Heidecker Joins Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss in Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ https://briefnews.eu/tim-heidecker-joins-lupita-nyongo-elisabeth-moss-in-jordan-peeles-us/ https://briefnews.eu/tim-heidecker-joins-lupita-nyongo-elisabeth-moss-in-jordan-peeles-us/#respond Fri, 13 Jul 2018 00:05:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tim-heidecker-joins-lupita-nyongo-elisabeth-moss-in-jordan-peeles-us/ us cast

Jordan Peele‘s upcoming thriller Us has added another actor to its star-studded cast. Tim Heidecker has joined the cast, joining the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss and Winston Duke in Peele’s highly anticipated follow-up to his ground-breaking horror hit, Get Out.

Heidecker has joined the Us cast in a mystery role for which details are being kept under wraps, according to Variety.

Heidecker is a comedian and writer who is probably best known as one half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, along with Eric Wareheim. As Tim & Eric, Heidecker has helped co-create comedy TV shows such as Tom Goes to the Mayor, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories. But Heidecker is not a stranger to horror. In Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories, he writes and acts in a horror-comedy anthology series heavily influenced by The Twilight Zone.

But it may be Heidecker’s comedy acumen that got him the role in Us, as Peele came from the comedy world before making his breakout directorial debut with Get Out. While Peele has confirmed that Us would be another film in the horror genre, the director suggested he would play with several genres in his sophomore effort:

“One thing I know is that this is genre, and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun, genre of intrigue is my favorite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.”

Us will mark Peele’s first return to directing since Get Out, which already makes it an immediate must-see movie. Get Out was a brilliant and subversive horror film that doubled as a social thriller, going on to rake in $ 255.5 million worldwide and becoming a bonafide cultural phenomenon in the process. And with a cast of heavy hitters like the Oscar-nominated Nyong’o, Emmy-winning Moss, and Black Panther breakout Winston Duke, Us could very well live up to Peele’s explosive debut.

Look for Us to hit theaters in March 2019.

Jordan Peele just took to social media to announce his next horror movie: Us, billed as “a new nightmare.” And that’s not all: Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss and Winston Duke are in talks to star.

Ready for a new Jordan Peele horror movie? I sure as hell am, and here it comes (in 2019)! Peele jumped onto social media tonight and announced the film’s title via a teaser poster.

Per Variety, Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss are both in talks to star. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Black Panther break-out Winston Duke is in talks as well. Beyond the potential casting news, there’s not much else to go on here. THR says the plot centers on “two couples, one white, one black”, but that’s about it.

One thing we do know: the film will be another horror film from the Get Out filmmaker. The tagline on the teaser poster advertises Us as a “new nightmare” from Peele. And when asked in the past about what his next project would be, Peele confirmed it would be another film in the horror genre:

“One thing I know is that this is genre, and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun, genre of intrigue is my favorite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.”

Peele also added:

“What do I do next? How do I top [Get Out]? And you know, and I think it’s important to focus on stories that are true to me. I go, when writing Get Out, my sort of mantra is or was, ‘Let’s write my favorite film I haven’t seen yet.’ So I think it’s easy to get sort of bogged down in ‘how does this compare to the first one, how does that compare?’ When all is said and done, my next film, I am currently writing it and I’ll direct for Universal this year, I’m just trying to entertain myself again.”

Get Out was a huge hit, and became a film that blossomed into a bonafide cultural phenomenon. On top of that, it garnered several Oscar nominations and landed Peele an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, Peele has been keeping busy, primarily producing projects, including the upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country and the TBS series The Last O.G.

Us will mark Peele’s first return to directing since Get Out, and honestly it can’t get here fast enough. Peele making a new horror movie with this potential cast sounds too damn good to be true, but I’m thrilled it’s happening. Look for Us in March 2019.

‘The Kitchen’ Movie Cast Adds Elisabeth Moss Alongside Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy https://briefnews.eu/the-kitchen-movie-cast-adds-elisabeth-moss-alongside-tiffany-haddish-and-melissa-mccarthy/ https://briefnews.eu/the-kitchen-movie-cast-adds-elisabeth-moss-alongside-tiffany-haddish-and-melissa-mccarthy/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 12:48:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-kitchen-movie-cast-adds-elisabeth-moss-alongside-tiffany-haddish-and-melissa-mccarthy/ The Kitchen movie cast

The Kitchen movie adaptation cast continues to grow, and what an interesting cast it is. Mad Men and The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss is the latest addition to the film, which also stars Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy.

The Kitchen, based on the  Vertigo comic book of the same name, tells the tale of a group of mobster wives who take over their husband’s crime empire after the men wind up in jail. It’s a pretty cool premise, and the upcoming film adaptation has a pretty cool cast. Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy previously joined the film, and now Elisabeth Moss is coming along for the ride.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms Moss will play “a timid wife of an abusive husband who falls in love with the violence of her new life.” McCarthy’s character is described as “an adoring mother who leads the women’s charge to take over the business”, and Haddish’s character is “willing to kill anyone in the way of her plan.”

Here’s a synopsis of the comic series:

New York City, late 1970s. Times Square is a haven for sex and drugs. The city teeters on the verge of bankruptcy, while blackouts can strike at any moment. This is the world of THE KITCHEN. The Irish gangs of Hell’s Kitchen rule the neighborhood, bringing terror to the streets and doing the dirty work for the Italian Mafia. Jimmy Brennan and his crew were the hardest bastards in the Kitchen, but after they’re all put in prison, their wives – Kath, Raven and Angie – decide to keep running their rackets. And once they get a taste of the fast life and easy money, it won’t be easy to stop.

Straight Out of Compton co-writer Andrea Berloff will make her directorial debut on the film. I’m ecstatic that New Line thought to hire a female filmmaker for The Kitchen. It seems that more often than not, even when a film assembles a strong all-female cast, a male filmmaker ends up behind the camera – see Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters remake, or the upcoming Ocean’s 8, directed by Gary Ross.

That said, the plot of The Kitchen bares more than a passing resemblance to Steve McQueen’s upcoming Widows, about the wives of four slain armed robbers who band together to finish their dead husband’s failed job. With a November 2018 opening date, Widows will end up in theaters before The Kitchen – which is scheduled for a September 20, 2019 release.

Top of the Lake: China Girl Review: Elisabeth Moss Shines (Again) in Sundance's Superb Crime Drama https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-elisabeth-moss-shines-again-in-sundances-superb-crime-drama/ https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-elisabeth-moss-shines-again-in-sundances-superb-crime-drama/#respond Mon, 21 Aug 2017 13:32:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-elisabeth-moss-shines-again-in-sundances-superb-crime-drama/ Elisabeth Moss will be a top contender at this year’s Emmys, and deservedly so, for her work in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. And she might as well make plans for a return trip next year, too, based on her knockout performance in Sundance’s gritty, mesmerizing crime drama Top of the Lake: China Girl.

A sequel to 2013’s Top of the Lake, China Girl — a six-hour Australian miniseries premiering Sunday, Sept. 10 at 9/8c and airing over three consecutive nights — finds Moss’ police detective Robin Griffin back in Sydney, still guarded and on edge after the traumatic events of last season. (Yes, you need to watch Season 1 before China Girl, if only to understand why Robin is so haunted… and also because it’s great.) Soon, she has a new partner in eager recruit Miranda (Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie) and a new case to obsess over when the dead body of an Asian prostitute is found stuffed inside a suitcase on a local beach.

Top of the Lake China Girl Elisabeth Moss Alice EnglertBut Robin is chasing personal demons, too: She reconnects with the daughter she gave up for adoption years ago, Mary (Alice Englert), who’s now 17 and rebelling against her adoptive parents (Nicole Kidman and Ewen Leslie) with her much older creep of a boyfriend Alexander (David Dencik). It sounds like an odd fit, but Robin and Mary’s adoption story actually ends up being more compelling than the murder mystery. China Girl isn’t a by-the-numbers crime drama: It’s a human story, first and foremost, and every side trip the narrative takes is emotionally rich and insightful.

As in the last Top of the Lake, Robin also has to battle her way through a thick cloud of male chauvinism at work. The men she works with on the police force are either sleazy perverts or incompetent oafs, or both. (At a crime scene, a male cop orders Miranda to fetch his jacket, then turns to ask Robin if she’s single.) It only makes Robin’s job harder, but she soldiers on without complaint, as if she’s been dealing with idiots like this her whole life. Plus, China Girl finds time to examine the murky morality of legal prostitution (we meet a group of dorky bloggers who trade notes on their favorite brothels and whores), the perils of motherhood in all its forms, and a dozen other fascinatingly juicy themes.

It almost goes without saying at this point that Moss is terrific in this. From Mad Men‘s Peggy Olson to The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Offred, Moss seems to specialize in a stiff-lipped defiance of misogyny, and she gives Robin a steely determination. But she’s not a robot, either: Robin’s pent-up rage spills out at inconvenient times, and Moss lets us see the still-fresh wounds beneath her tough exterior. (As Robin says, she’s not only been “burnt” in the past, she’s been “deep-fried.”) It’s a stunningly vulnerable, powerhouse performance from Moss, further solidifying her status as one of TV’s finest actresses working today.

Top of the Lake China Girl Nicole KidmanActually, the acting is tremendous across the board, as is the directing. Quiet and meditative throughout, China Girl is gorgeously photographed; Oscar winner Jane Campion directs half the episodes and fills the frame with tiny, telling details. (Like when we see Robin’s male colleagues playfully wrestling in the background while she works, or when Robin has to weave her way through a forest of tall blonde girls sipping wine at a bar.) Kidman will likely be back at the Emmys next year, too, for her work here playing a panicked mother who feels her daughter slipping through her fingers. Christie gets a chance to show a comedic, emotional range we haven’t seen from her on GoT, and Englert is very impressive as young Mary, who’s desperate for affection and finds it in all the wrong places.

Judged strictly as a crime drama, China Girl isn’t perfect: It’s a bit exposition-heavy at first, bending over backwards to fill in viewers who didn’t watch the first season, and the various story strands tie together too easily. But the central murder mystery does build to a startlingly intense finish. (You’ll want to watch the last two hours in a row, since Episode 5 ends on a gasp-worthy cliffhanger.) Ultimately, though, China Girl isn’t just about revealing who the killer is. It’s about taking a hard, unflinching look at why we do the terrible things we do… in the hopes that maybe we won’t repeat them the next time around.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Top of the Lake: China Girl is a triumph — a haunting, humane crime drama filled with powerhouse performances.

Warning: The following article contains spoilers from episode eight.

In an upcoming episode, the Commander (played by Joseph Fiennes) will take Offred (Elisabeth Moss) to a brothel where she will be left appalled by what she sees.

Commander Waterford will dress her up in a sparkling silver gown for the night out where she will find other handmaids forced to partake in an orgy.

As Offred wanders down a corridor in the mansion, she will catch a glimpse of a handmaid locking lips with another woman while she has sex with a commander.

Horrified by what she has just witnessed she quickly turns away from the room and walks away to try and forget what she has just seen.

But it won’t just be what she finds in the bedroom that leaves Offred speechless.

A fellow handmaid can be seen sitting on the lap of a commander with her red robes pulled down to expose her breasts while her blonde locks peak out of her regulation white hat.

Others handmaids wander around the room in lacy lingerie and sheer nightgowns while one is pictured wearing a dog collar and leash around her neck.

She appears completely naked in the racy scene except for a black lace eye mask to conceal her identity from the visiting commanders.

The shocking scenes come after actress Elisabeth declared that the series was “first and foremost feminist”.

The Handmaid’s Tale airs Sunday on at 9pm.

The Handmaid's Tale: Elisabeth Moss says controversy around series was 'a wake up call' https://briefnews.eu/the-handmaids-tale-elisabeth-moss-says-controversy-around-series-was-a-wake-up-call/ https://briefnews.eu/the-handmaids-tale-elisabeth-moss-says-controversy-around-series-was-a-wake-up-call/#respond Sun, 04 Jun 2017 18:27:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-handmaids-tale-elisabeth-moss-says-controversy-around-series-was-a-wake-up-call/

She plays a handmaid called Offred who is one of the few fertile women still left in Gilead and is assigned to a commander who she must serve.

Offred is subjected to a ceremonial rape in order to produce a child for the commander and his barren wife.

Earlier this year, the actress said that The Handmaid’s Tale was a “human story” and never intended to play her character as a feminist.

While fans were shocked by her remarks, the 34-year-old has opened up about her comments and clarified that she does believe the drama is “first and foremost feminist”.

“I don’t think I quite said the right thing, clearly,” she explained.

“Because if anything I said led anyone to believe that I’m not a feminist or The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t a feminist work then obviously I didn’t say the right thing.

“There are many groups that are punished and much maligned in the show. Is it first and foremost feminist? Absolutely. It’s called The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Speaking of the controversy that followed her remarks at the Tribeca Film Festival, Elisabeth told Radio Times: “[It] was an interesting learning experience, it was a wake up call. I didn’t know anyone would give a s***.”

It comes after Hulu’s head of content, Craig Erwich, hinted that on which it is based.

“The response we’ve seen has been absolutely incredible,” he said.

“The Handmaid’s Tale is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers.

“We can’t wait to continue Margaret’s vision with another season.”

The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss: It’s very hard to put this show in a box https://briefnews.eu/the-handmaids-tale-star-elisabeth-moss-its-very-hard-to-put-this-show-in-a-box/ https://briefnews.eu/the-handmaids-tale-star-elisabeth-moss-its-very-hard-to-put-this-show-in-a-box/#respond Sun, 28 May 2017 00:26:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-handmaids-tale-star-elisabeth-moss-its-very-hard-to-put-this-show-in-a-box/

What is The Handmaid’s Tale about?

The story takes place in an alternate world, called Gilead, where a fundamentalist regime has taken over. Gilead was once part of the United States. Due to some environmental disasters, fertility has dropped in women.

Only one in five babies are surviving, so this new regime has developed a way of procreating and continuing the race. The new ways that Gilead adopts are taken from scripture in the Bible.

Who do you play?

I play June, otherwise known as Offred. I play a woman who is fertile and any fertile woman is captured and enslaved and given to a couple who cannot have a baby. The husband has sex with the Handmaid in the hopes that they can get her pregnant. Then when she does get pregnant, they take the baby and she moves on.

What genre does it fall under?

The Handmaid’s Tale is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s very hard to put this show in a box.

What attracted you to this role?

I adored the showrunner Bruce Miller and wanted to be friends with him. Luckily the feeling was mutual!

What is June’s backstory?

June is the Handmaid to Joseph Fiennes’ character Commander Fred Waterford – that’s how she gets the name Offred, as women are subserviant to their masgters. She was captured about three years previously and, in that capture, her husband is taken away from her and her daughter is stolen.

She has no idea where they are or if they’re alive. She thinks her husband is dead. When we pick up her story, she’s not doing too well. She has had a lot of her fight and soul beaten out of her, both physically and emotionally.

Was she a challenging part to play?

The biggest creative challenge at the beginning was playing a character who is essentially forbidden from speaking and from showing her feelings. For me as an actor, that is a fantastic challenge.

Do we ever see the real June?

There are moments a little bit of that person comes back. She starts saying things she never would have said that could get her into massive trouble or even killed.

The series is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel –  was she involved?

Yes! It’s a bizarre experience to be in the same room with somebody who wrote the character that you’re playing. The Handmaid’s Tale is a profound novel and she is one of our greatest writers.

Was it hard adapting to becoming a Handmaid?

I remember having dinner with Margaret Atwood and, after she left, my co-stars Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel and I were standing outside and trying to figure out the mechanics of our characters. They were like, “So, how far down do you put your head and how do you look from the side?” We were practicing on the street until eleven at night!

Are you similar to June?

What attracted me so much to the series is how close June was to me. If Gilead happened now, I would be a Handmaid. That was something that really struck me.

What excites you most about the series?

I’m excited for people to discover how positive and inspiring the story actually is.

The Handmaid’s Tale, 9pm tonight, Channel 4

Top of the Lake: Elisabeth Moss Grieves, Nicole Kidman Grasps in Intense New Season 2 Photos https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-elisabeth-moss-grieves-nicole-kidman-grasps-in-intense-new-season-2-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-elisabeth-moss-grieves-nicole-kidman-grasps-in-intense-new-season-2-photos/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 17:06:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-elisabeth-moss-grieves-nicole-kidman-grasps-in-intense-new-season-2-photos/

Season 2 of Sundance’s Top of the Lake is set at the shore, but as these new photos released Monday can attest,it’s by no means the TV equivalent of a summer beach read.

The return of the Jane Campion crime drama finds Australian police detective Robin Griffin (Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss) coming back to her job after the traumatic events of Season 1. Her first case back involves a dead Asian girl whose body, encased in some luggage, washes up on the beach. As she and colleague Miranda Hilmarson (Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie) investigate, they wind up at a disturbing brothel.

Also unsettling: The daughter Robin gave up for adoption is now a teen named Mary, and as the two get to know each other, Robin becomes increasingly worried about the kind of male company Mary’s adoptive mother — played by Big Little Lies‘ Nicole Kidman — keeps.

In the new photos, Miranda seems to find a clue among the sun worshippers on a sandy shore, Robin sobs and drinks, and Kidman’s Julia pulls her kid close as if to make an important point. We also get an update on Tui Mitcham, the 12-year-old whose disappearance was at the center of the drama’s first season.

Top of the Lake: China Girl will premiere in September on the cabler; episodes will be available on Hulu a day later.
