Critics of US President Donald Trump were quick to accuse him of anti-Semitism over a tweet claiming that women accosting senators over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh were paid by liberal billionaire George Soros.

“The very rude elevator screamers are paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad. Don’t fall for it!” Trump tweeted on Friday. “Also, look at all of the professionally made identical signs. Paid for by Soros and others. These are not signs made in the basement from love!”

Outrage ensued, obviously. ThinkProgress, the media arm of John Podesta’s Center for American Progress think tank, immediately accused the president of anti-Semitism. A Slate editor chimed in, calling Trump’s words an “anti-Semitic dog whistle.” And a staff writer for The Atlantic called it a “conspiracy theory that a rich Jewish boogeyman is making women claim to have been raped and assaulted.”

Columnists for the New York Times and the Washington Post were quick to follow, denouncing what they said was an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory and adding a splash of guilt by association.

This would come as news to Israel, however. In July 2017, ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary, the Israeli ambassador in Budapest condemned anti-Semitism in relation to a campaign poster depicting Soros negatively. The Israeli Foreign Ministry quickly reacted to clarify the statement, explaining that criticism of Soros was legitimate, because the Hungarian-born billionaire “continuously undermines Israel’s democratically elected governments” and funds organizations “that defame the Jewish state and seek to deny it the right to defend itself.”

Speaking of conspiracy theories, though, an Atlantic Council hunter for Russian witches was quick to accuse “the Russians” – specifically, RT – of being behind the whole Soros story.

RT’s sin, you see, was to cite reporting by US journalists who listened in on conference calls in which groups were coordinating protests against Kavanaugh and handing cash to those arrested, and quote public records showing that Soros’s Open Society Foundation gave generously to these groups.

A common thread in all these reports is the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), which organized some of the protests against Trump’s Supreme Court nominee from day one. It was CPD activists and executives that led the ambush of Senator Jeff Flake in a Capitol Hill elevator, as well as several of his colleagues at the Washington National Airport.

Public records show that Soros’s Open Society Foundation is one of the major donors to CPD, giving $ 130,000 in 2014 and $ 1,164,500 in 2015. Soros gave an additional $ 1.5 million to the group in 2016 and 2017.

For most of my adult life, I’ve lived in dense urban environments where elevators are a part of daily existence. During that entire time, I’ve had an elevator get stuck a grand total of once. Someone opened a small panel, pulled out what looked like a handset from an old rotary phone, and managed to get people dispatched to get us out. I was a little too distracted to ponder the technology involved then, and I haven’t had cause to think about it since.

Decades of ignorant bliss were interrupted this week when the emergency intercom on my elevator—now just a speaker embedded in the elevator wall—tried to get my attention. Because it wanted to offer me a great bargain on some solar panels.

After a brief, wonder-filled period when the Do Not Call Registry seemed to be like magic, telemarketers are back. It’s now rare for me to go a day without offers to help with the student loans I paid off decades ago or the credit card balances I studiously avoid having. I usually manage to hang up before the recording can finish its first sentence. But in this case, I stepped on to an elevator with a pitch in full swing and had to listen to it for six floors, not to mention the time involved in the doors opening and closing.

A new mother has died in a freak accident shortly after giving birth, when an elevator at a Spanish hospital activated before the doors closed and the woman was dismembered.

The unnamed woman, 28, was accompanied by her new born child when the accident took place at the Valme Hospital in Seville, southern Spain, reports ABC Sevilla.

A suspected mechanical fault activated the elevator before she was fully pushed into the cabin and the doors had closed properly at approximately 14:30pm local time on Sunday. The woman’s head became trapped between the doors and the elevator shaft.

Medical personnel, police and firefighters rushed to the scene but were unable to free the woman’s body for two hours reports ABC Sevilla.

The area of the hospital has been closed off while a forensic examination is carried out to determine how exactly the tragedy occurred.  

The hospital has meanwhile set up a special reception area for the woman’s grieving relatives. Her baby, who was not harmed in the incident, was transported to the Virgen del Rocío children’s hospital.

An elderly Denver man who died in an elevator had pressed the help button twice, but remained trapped until the fire department discovered his decomposing body nearly a month later.

Isaak Komisarchik, who was 82 and had early on-set dementia, went missing on July 5.

On August 2, the Denver Fire Department found his corpse in the elevator in a parking garage of the Woodstream Village apartments, just under a mile from where Komisarchik lived, after residents there complained of a smell.

But a police investigation revealed that the help button in the elevator in which Komisarchik was found had been pressed twice, eight minutes apart, on the morning of July 6, the day after he went missing.

One help call was electronically logged at 9:09 a.m. and the other at 9:17 a.m., according to the Denver Post.

The state fire code dictates where that call is supposed to go, Denver Fire Department spokesman Greg Pixley told BuzzFeed News, and in this case the emergency call went to a monitoring agency.

“The monitoring agency has the same mandate [as one-site security] and has to make a determination – if it’s something that can be handled in-house or to notify the emergency services through our 911 system or to circumvent the 911 system with a call notification,” Pixley said.

MEI Total Elevator Solutions, the company that monitors the elevators of Woodstream, released a statement to Denver 7 ABC.

We are saddened by the tragic loss of life and extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Komisarchik’s family and friends. The elevator cab where he was found is located in a parking garage that is under renovation construction and not currently in active use. We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident with the local authorities.

Police told Denver 7 ABC that MEI had contacted Woodstream’s management after receiving the help calls from the elevator, but that Woodstream workers only checked the two elevators in the apartment building and did not check the parking garage elevator, which was being renovated.

The building’s elevators passed safety checks last year and had valid operating permits.

“Most importantly, the fire department was not notified of any issue surrounding these elevators,” said Pixley.

If renovations affect elevators, permits need to be acquired from the Denver Fire Department, and no such permits had been requested or issues, added Pixley.

Elon Musk’s Boring Company is getting closer to becoming a reality.

The businessman conceived the idea in December in response to the pain of clogged up roads and traffic jams, and it has begun to take shape thanks to work carried out this summer.

The basic idea is that underground tunnels can transport vehicles from A to B more quickly and efficiently than roads, with no time wasted sitting in traffic. A car drives into a collection point located on the surface, after which it is taken underground via an elevator and moved to its desired destination using a sled on wheels that traverses a network of underground tunnels. Essentially, it’s an underground railway system for vehicles, and potentially more.

Musk shared details of the elevator last month, saying at the time that it was close to operational, and now he’s published footage of one in action. The tunnel networks themselves will take more time to complete, of course, but it’s a sign that this ambitious project is moving forward with speed.

The theory is shaping up to become a reality, and Musk hasn’t wasted time getting buy-in from key authorities. He said before that he had gotten “verbal approval” from the government to build a network to connect New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC, and he has held “promising” talks with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti over the project.
