One of The CW’s greatest love stories is being retold in song. The Feb. 4 episode of Legacies (9/8c) stages the long-awaited production of Salvatore: The Musical, with current students embodying Vampire Diaries favorites like Damon, Stefan, Elena and Caroline.

A new batch of photos finds Josie donning Elena’s signature black hair, leather jacket and Converse sneakers as she recreates the doppelganger’s first meeting with Stefan (played here by Jed) in the cemetery. Damon, meanwhile, will be played by Kaleb, while Lizzie appears to be portraying none other than Caroline Forbes.

Though this is certainly the most direct reference to the franchise’s original series, Legacies has always featured nods to both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Several characters from those shows — including Matt Donovan, Jeremy Gilbert, Freya Mikaelson and even Kai Parker — have popped up during the CW spinoff’s first two seasons.

Legacies recently returned for its third season, picking up immediately where its sophomore outing left off, with Hope and Landon in various states of unconsciousness. Both halves of the show’s it couple were vertical by the end of the hour, but with The Necromancer continuing to plot against them, they’re hardly out of the woods just yet.

The tragic tale of Soviet gymnastics star Elena Mukhina https://briefnews.eu/the-tragic-tale-of-soviet-gymnastics-star-elena-mukhina/ https://briefnews.eu/the-tragic-tale-of-soviet-gymnastics-star-elena-mukhina/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 16:01:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-tragic-tale-of-soviet-gymnastics-star-elena-mukhina/ Eleven years ago, former gymnastics star Elena Mukhina, whose life and sports career were ruined by a tragic training accident, passed away in Moscow at the age of 46.

Mukhina, the embodiment of elegance and strength, sacrificed her life and health in attempt to win an Olympic medal for her country. Her tragic story, which stunned the gymnastics world, is a sad reminder of the price top-level athletes can sometimes pay in their bid to reach the pinnacle of their sport.

Mukhina was orphaned at the age of five, after her mother died in an apartment fire. The youngster was raised by her grandmother, Anna, and joined the CSKA sports club, where she started doing artistic gymnastics – something which had always fascinated her.

Up until 1974, she appeared an unremarkable gymnast with only modest achievements. All that changed, however, when she teamed up with coach Mikhail Klimenko, who had come to women’s gymnastics from the men’s team.

Firmly mastering techniques and elements borrowed from men’s gymnastics, Mukhina was transformed by Klimenko into one of the most promising athletes in the Soviet team.

In 1976, she won the Soviet junior all-around title, but after finishing 12th at the National Championships failed to make it to the Olympic squad, which was competing in Montreal.

Undeterred, the gymnast continued to work hard, and shot to fame at the 1977 European Championships, when she claimed silver in the all-around finals, losing only to Romanian star Nadia Comaneci, who triumphed at the Montreal Olympics as the sole gymnast to receive a perfect 10 points for her performance.

At the same championships, Mukhina took three individual titles on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, impressing the judges with the difficulty of her unique routines.

She made history at the competition by displaying her revolutionary signature elements – a full-twisting layout Korbut flip on the bars and a double back dismount on the beam.

Mukhina stole the limelight at the 1978 World Championships in Strasbourg, France, where she took five medals including the coveted all-around title, beating Olympic champions Comaneci and Nellie Kim.

Having demonstrated powerful and stunning performances, she quickly established herself as an athlete to watch at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. However, her preparation for the home Games was hampered by a leg injury, which precluded her from participating in the pre-Olympic World Championships.

After missing out, she resumed training before her broken leg had completely healed, in order not to waste time ahead of the 1980 Summer Games, where she was expected to shine.

In a rare interview, Mukhina later confessed that she had been moved from the Central Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics and taken to the gym, where her coach removed the cast and pressured her to train.

“They took an X-ray and it turned out that the bones had separated. I was on the operating table right after lunch. My coach came the next day and said that I wasn’t conscious and that I could train in a cast,” she said in an interview taken in 1998.

On July 3, 1980, two weeks before the Moscow Olympics, Mukhina’s life changed forever. Her coach Klimenko had left the training camp in Minsk for a few days, leaving the gymnast with other trainers from the national team.

Mukhina, who was learning a new tumbling move, the Thomas Salto, which had only been performed by men, attempted to do it on the floor. She under-rotated the somersault and crash-landed on her chin, crunching her cervical vertebrae, which never knitted again.

She was just 20 years old when the tragic accident left her paralyzed for the rest of her life.

Mukhina was forced to use a wheelchair, and later said the disastrous accident had been inevitable, taking into account the conditions under which she had been pressured to train in.

The former gymnast died in her Moscow apartment in December of 2006, leaving a legacy both triumphant and tragic.

Elena Ferrante’s ‘My Brilliant Friend’ Series to Start Filming for HBO This Summer https://briefnews.eu/elena-ferrantes-my-brilliant-friend-series-to-start-filming-for-hbo-this-summer/ https://briefnews.eu/elena-ferrantes-my-brilliant-friend-series-to-start-filming-for-hbo-this-summer/#respond Fri, 31 Mar 2017 00:23:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/elena-ferrantes-my-brilliant-friend-series-to-start-filming-for-hbo-this-summer/ Remember how a long time ago it was announced that Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels were being made into a TV series? (Even if you didn’t already know that, you may have already assumed it, given how quickly widely discussed/loved novels — most recently, Hanya Yanagihara’s 2015 novel A Little Life and Colson Whitehead’s 2016 novel The Underground Railroad — get developed as series these days.) The initial news that this was happening was vague: a network wasn’t yet attached, nor were any directors. Now, it has these things, and will, according to a press release from HBO (who, yes, is the lucky U.S. network that nabbed it, alongside Italy’s public broadcasting network, RAI), begin filming this summer in Naples. A premiere is anticipated sometime in 2018, according to Variety.

Thus far, the network has only officially announced the filming of My Brilliant Friend — an 8-part series based on the first novel in Ferrante’s 4-part series. Wildside and Fandango are also producing, as was announced when news of the project first arrived. The adaptation is being developed by the pseudonymous Ferrante herself, along with Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo.

Casey Bloys, the president of HBO programming, said in a statement:

Through her characters, Elena and Lila, we will witness a lifelong friendship set against the seductive social web of Naples, Italy. An exploration of the complicated intensity of female friendship, these ambitious stories will no doubt resonate with the HBO audience.

RAI’s director general, Antonio Campo Dall’Orto, said:

This is an ambitious project that satisfies many of the public service’s objectives in the field of TV drama. It is Italian and international; it is universal but complex; it is a huge co-production with a global value.

And finally among the list of vocal, involved parties is Lorenzo Mieli, CEO of Wildside, who said:

Producing a series based on the incredible work of Elena Ferrante is an exciting challenge. Through the eyes and lives of two extraordinary friends, her quadrilogy describes 50 years of Italian history, touching on universal themes and feelings.

This last quote is important when considered alongside the first news that was shared about the adaptation. Back in February of last year, when the nascent project was announced, it appeared that all of the novels would be adapted, with 32 episodes altogether, and each 8-episode season encompassing one novel. Though the new press release doesn’t explicitly state that the other novels are coming as well, we can assume that’s likely still the plan going forth, given that Mieli talks about “50 years of Italian history,” and that this first season is, indeed, 8 episodes depicting the events in the first novel; the New York Times’ write up confirms that expanding to all four novels, one per 8-episode season, is ultimately the goal.

HBO’s description — which speaks to the novels as a whole (which Ferrante herself considers a single entity) — likewise indicates that the scope of this project could be intended as much larger than the one season of the first novel:

When the most important friend in her life seems to have disappeared without a trace, Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman immersed in a house full of books, turns on her computer and starts writing the story of their friendship. She met Raffaella Cerullo, whom she has always called Lila, in the first year of primary school in 1950. Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story thus begins and goes on to cover over 60 years of their lives, trying to describe the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and – in a way – her best friend, her worst enemy.

All 8 episodes will be directed by Costanzo, whose feature directorial credits include Hungry Hearts and Private.

Though few know (for sure, at least) who or where Ferrante really is, she’s kind of everywhere: beyond the novels and the series, there’s also currently a theater adaptation of the Neapolitan Novels in performance (and closing this Sunday) at Kingston’s Rose Theatre.

Vampire Diaries Boss Talks Katherine's Sudden Rise to Power, Admits She Briefly Considered Killing Off Elena https://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-boss-talks-katherines-sudden-rise-to-power-admits-she-briefly-considered-killing-off-elena/ https://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-boss-talks-katherines-sudden-rise-to-power-admits-she-briefly-considered-killing-off-elena/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2017 15:40:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-boss-talks-katherines-sudden-rise-to-power-admits-she-briefly-considered-killing-off-elena/

If you were hoping Friday’s Vampire Diaries finale (The CW, 9/8c) would help fill in a few blanks about Katherine — for example, how she became the new queen of Hell — then I guess that makes me the bearer of bad news.

“One of the things we realized as we were getting to the end and trying to squeeze in story where we could was, like, of course Katherine wound up running hell,” executive producer Julie Plec tells TVLine. “Of course she had Cade wrapped around her little finger.” As for specifics, “You can fill in the blanks of how she’s able to pull that off.”

Adds Plec, “If I could nail down Nina [Dobrev] for a shortened-season retelling of Katherine’s exploits in Hell, I’d do it in a heartbeat.”

And although the Katherine-centric series finale has a full-circle feel to it, Plec says she hadn’t always planned on bringing Dobrev’s wicked doppelgänger back into the picture.

“We made the decision when we took Katherine away that we were going to do it in a way that looked different from how anyone else had died,” she explains. “We weren’t going to push ourselves to answer the question of ‘where,’ because — in our minds — it was whatever version of hell The Vampire Diaries would choose to tell stories about. In Season 8, we decided to tell that story. It came back around perfectly because we got to show not just where Katherine’s been, but also reveal that she’s actually basically been the puppet master of everything that happened in Season 8 — which is nice full circle back to how she was the puppet master of everything in Season 1.”

Of course, Dobrev wasn’t always confirmed to appear in the series finale, leading Plec to contemplate a back-up plan she now considers “pretty lame.”

“At one point in the middle of the season, I thought, ‘Should we just shock the audience and kill Elena in the middle of the season? Burn her body, and she’s just gone, so we’re not misleading fans all season with the promise that she’ll return?’ One of the writers was like, ‘As a fan of the show, I think that’s just about the worst idea you’ve ever had.’” (On behalf of literally every single fan, I thank you, mysterious writer.)

And if you’re wondering about those 15-second teases we’ve been seeing, Plec promises they’re not a total misdirect: “We’re not pulling a bait and switch of Elena not being awake. She is. We will see her in this episode.”

OK, you tell us: Can you accept not knowing how Katherine rose in the ranks? Would you have been crushed by a premature Elena death? And how do you hope this all ends on Friday? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.

Vampire Diaries Series Finale: Damon and Elena Hug in (Yet Another) Teaser https://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-series-finale-damon-and-elena-hug-in-yet-another-teaser/ https://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-series-finale-damon-and-elena-hug-in-yet-another-teaser/#respond Tue, 28 Feb 2017 05:45:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-series-finale-damon-and-elena-hug-in-yet-another-teaser/

Another day, another blink-and-you-missed-it preview of The Vampire Diaries series finale — not that we’re complaining.

The CW on Monday released the fourth official teaser from the long-running drama’s big farewell — airing Friday, March 10 at 9/8c — and this one features a full-on hug between estranged lovers Damon and Elena. (Think we can get #DelenaHug trending?)

With only two episodes left, TVD seems to have saved its biggest moments for last. In addition to Elena’s reunion with Damon, the show’s final hours will also feature Stefan and Caroline’s not-so-June wedding, as well as the return of Katherine “Queen of Hell” Pierce.

Vampire Diaries Series Finale: Elena, Stefan Reunite in Latest Teaser https://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-series-finale-elena-stefan-reunite-in-latest-teaser/ https://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-series-finale-elena-stefan-reunite-in-latest-teaser/#respond Tue, 21 Feb 2017 00:40:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vampire-diaries-series-finale-elena-stefan-reunite-in-latest-teaser/

Dear CW, you’re killing us.

Sincerely, fans of The Vampire Diaries.

Following this week’s Kai-centric episode, the network on Monday made public its latest teaser for the March 10 series finale, this time tossing Stefan into the mix.

No, we don’t hear any new dialogue — still the same “What happened? Why am I here right now?” from Elena — but we do see that she’s speaking these words to Stefan, who appears dressed for a fancy occasion. (Like, say, his wedding to Caroline?)

Last week, The CW released a vague synopsis for the series finale, titled “I Was Feeling Epic”:

With the fate of Mystic Falls at stake, Stefan and Damon must fight their greatest enemy for one last battle.
