Theme Park Bits: Disco Yeti Might Actually Bust a Move, Super Nintendo World Could Feature a Gaming Element https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-disco-yeti-might-actually-bust-a-move-super-nintendo-world-could-feature-a-gaming-element/ https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-disco-yeti-might-actually-bust-a-move-super-nintendo-world-could-feature-a-gaming-element/#respond Mon, 16 Jul 2018 08:42:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-disco-yeti-might-actually-bust-a-move-super-nintendo-world-could-feature-a-gaming-element/

In this edition of Theme Park Bits:

  • The paralyzed yeti in Disney’s Expedition Everest ride may finally be on track to move again.
  • Some misattributed photos have led to false reports of an animatronic Lion King movie model.
  • Florida parkgoers, you’ll definitely want to see what your new Mickey Mouse beignets look like.
  • A man in his eighties has settled his lawsuit against Disneyland for kicking him out of Club 33.
  • Will gamers one day be gaming at Univeral Studios in direct synergy with Super Nintendo World?

Disco Yeti may soon dance again for real. Due to complex technical issues, the elaborate, 25-foot audio-animatronic figure in Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has long stood immobile, with only a strobe-light effect to give it the illusion of movement. It actually broke a few months after the ride first opened back in 2006 and has been operating in “B-mode” ever since. However, a new report over at WDW News Today suggests that a closure of the ride and lengthy refurbishment of it may finally be imminent, allowing the necessary work to be done to restore the yeti to its original intended range of motion.

Don’t get too excited about the tweet above. As it turns out, those live-action Lion King pictures aren’t real. It all started when an erroneous tweet went out this week from the unfortunately named Disney Film Facts. In short order, photos of a lion that was supposedly Mufasa from Jon Favreau’s upcoming live-action Lion King remake began circulating. However, as Screen Rant notes in the link at the top of this paragraph, the photos were of an unrelated project by Chris Creatures.

Mark the myth of the Mufasa model as busted … but I’d still like a definitive answer from the fact-checkers over at Snopes as to whether or not that “Why I’m Scared of the Ocean” photo of the enormous blue whale passing under the boat is real.

How about some authentic pictures? The ones below are from Disney California Adventure, where some barges for the nighttime show World of Color have been undergoing maintenance.

He’s been called “the man who turned Club 33 upside down,” and if the rumors are true, then Disney may have actually set up a sting operation a few years back to catch octogenarian Joseph Cosgrove and his wife re-selling club tickets to special events. Whatever the case, there’s some fascinating sociology at play in the tale of Cosgrove’s ousting from the highly exclusive club and his subsequent lawsuit against Disney for “having his contractual and personal rights trammeled by a new generation of millennials trying to convert ‘Club 33’ into a billionaires’ exclusive domain.” Now that lawsuit has finally been settled.

Details are scarce for now, but a worker at Walt Disney World died in an “industrial accident” this week.

Mickey Mouse beignets. They’re here, Florida. You can now chow down on the powdery doughnuts at Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory in the Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter at Disney World. Sure, you could drive to the real French Quarter in New Orleans and eat beignets there at the legendary Cafe Du Monde like Chef Carl Casper and his son do in the Jon Favreau film Chef.

But would those beignets have Mickey Mouse ears?!

Last week, we ended with some pictures from the technical rehearsals of Universal Orlando’s Cinematic Celebration. Above, you can now see a video of the new lagoon show, courtesy of Inside the Magic.

In other Universal news, a Nintendo spokesperson has said that visitors to Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan (and eventually Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood) “can expect to see synergy with our dedicated video game platform business.” Variety speculates:

“With the mobile nature of some of Nintendo’s most popular games, whether referring to ‘Pokemon Go’ on mobile devices or ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ on the Switch, it would seem Nintendo could add special features to encourage players to bring their gaming devices with them, such as offering special downloadable content.”

  • And more!

Great British Bake Off viewers rage as show brings back HUGELY controversial element https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-viewers-rage-as-show-brings-back-hugely-controversial-element/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-viewers-rage-as-show-brings-back-hugely-controversial-element/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 21:34:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-viewers-rage-as-show-brings-back-hugely-controversial-element/

The festive edition kicked off with hosts Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig announced that the first task would be completing a Baked Alaska Tart.

The bake in question has not been seen on the cooking competition since 2014, when #bingate caused a national panic.

Iain Watters famously presented a bin to judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry after his ice cream was removed from the fridge.

Diana Beard received huge backlash as she was believed to be the culprit by BBC viewers.

When the challenge hit Channel 4 screens this evening, fans of the show could hardly believe that they would attempt to repeat such a controversial challenge.

One viewer posted on Twitter in response to the choice: “Baked Alaska on the first task? Where was the trigger warning for Iain??”

Another raged: “NO NO NO I WAS NOT PREPARED. ICE CREAM. BAKED ALASKA (tarts) DID YOU EVEN WATCH IT BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT C4?!?!?!”

A third commented: “Every time ice cream is involved on Bake Off I get flashbacks to the Baked Alaska meltdown of 2014.”

Great British Bake Off returned this evening and opened up with a hilarious performance of East 17’s Stay Another Day.

Noel, Sandi and Paul were joined by Prue Leith in oversized white puffer jackets as they mimed along to the Christmas song.

Great British Bake Off is expected to return to Channel 4 for a full series later in the year.

Dancing On Ice 2017: Donna Air already BANNED from key element for very bizarre reason https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-2017-donna-air-already-banned-from-key-element-for-very-bizarre-reason/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-2017-donna-air-already-banned-from-key-element-for-very-bizarre-reason/#respond Thu, 28 Dec 2017 12:07:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-2017-donna-air-already-banned-from-key-element-for-very-bizarre-reason/

The death-defying stunt has been performed by a few brave celebrities over the years, but now 38-year-old Donna has confessed she has been banned from tackling the headbanger.

It appears that her genetics have saved her from the scary lift this time around, fearing it would be too dangerous for her to attempt.

She confessed: “Apparently I’m too tall for the headbanger, I’ve been ruled out of the headbanger already.

“But I don’t think that gets me off scot-free, I’m sure they’ll come up with something else for me.”

Only time will tell if fellow female contestants Brooke Vincent, Candice Brown and Steph Waring will brave the daring move.

Meanwhile Donna also told The Sun that she can feel her body changing already, thanks to the gruelling schedule.

The Geordie personality revealed: “I think it’s really important for the girls and women to be strong and so I can feel my body getting stronger.

“I hate the gym so there’s no chance of me doing that so I’d rather do something where you’re having an experience and you notice your body changing.

“For purely superficial reasons I’m very happy my bottom is going in the right direction. Progress is being made, I might start drawing little markers on the wall to see how high it gets!” she joked.

Dancing On Ice returns to ITV on January 7.

AI Weekly: The human element of AI https://briefnews.eu/ai-weekly-the-human-element-of-ai/ https://briefnews.eu/ai-weekly-the-human-element-of-ai/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 01:40:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ai-weekly-the-human-element-of-ai/

This week the VB team went all out: We spent two days with some of the brightest minds in AI. Companies like Google, Pinterest, Lyft, LinkedIn, Amazon, and Walmart joined us alongside startups like Amplero, Datorama, Persado, and Clari.

What was most surprising was not the efficiency gains or improvements in ROI or CTR, though that’s all notable. More surprising were examples like talk of the importance of humility with AI at Indeed, the mistake of ignoring customers and noise in data that Pinterest brought up, or how AI was first brought to Cisco by a small group of believers.

While billions are being invested to train machines, implementing AI is still a process that requires a lot of manual intervention from the flawed, ingenious, fallible animals called humans. We’re the ones who decide which models to use, which parameters are correct, and what data is worth feeding into the system. We’re the ones who help instill bias, overfit models, and launch a thousand failed experiments to find the one that works. In the golden age of AI, every nail is potentially the target of an AI hammer, making it ultimately reliant on human decisions to make the technology efficient, smart, and life-improving.

It’s a big, expensive question, but one that’s going to affect everyone on Earth. Where to implement AI, what kind to deploy, and what’s best for customers escapes many businesses still — even some of the big, deep-pocketed companies.

It may sound cliché, but the best part of the two-day event wasn’t the dank datasets or forward-thinking insights. It was meeting and shaking the hands of people who are in the trenches working to traverse AI’s challenges.

Google Brain chief: Deep learning takes at least 100,000 examples

While the current class of deep learning techniques is helping fuel the AI wave, one of the frequently cited drawbacks is that they require a lot of data to work. But how much is enough data? “I would say pretty much any business that has tens or hundreds of thousands of customer interactions has enough scale to start thinking about using these sorts of things,” Jeff Dean, a senior fellow at Google, said in an onstage interview at the VB […]

How Pinterest uses AI to learn (and sell) your style

Pinterest’s computer vision tools can be used to identify things you see in the world, but the real goal is to be able to recognize your style, even if it doesn’t have a name. “We don’t have to know the name of your style but we [can match it], and I think that’s the magic part. That’s why we believe Lens is the first baby step to […]”

Cisco’s AI push started with a small group of true believers

When Cisco started working on a unified analytics platform, the company was more concerned with finding the right people to do the work than with the data they were using, Cisco’s vice president of strategy, Rajat Mishra, said at the VB Summit in Berkeley, California today. “I wish I could tell you we had a very analytical approach to this problem,” he said in an onstage interview. “The truth is much messier.”  […]

How Google’s Pixel 2 Now Playing song identification works

The most interesting Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature, to me, is Now Playing. If you’ve ever used Shazam or SoundHound, you probably understand the basics: The app uses your device’s microphone to capture an audio sample and creates an acoustic fingerprint to compare against a central song database. If a match is found, information such as the song title and artist are sent back to the user. Now Playing achieves this with […]

Tech giants are paying huge salaries for scarce AI talent

Silicon Valley’s start-ups have always had a recruiting advantage over the industry’s giants: Take a chance on us and we’ll give you an ownership stake that could make you rich if the company is successful. Now the tech industry’s race to embrace artificial intelligence may render that advantage moot — at least for the few prospective employees who know a lot about AI. (via New York Times)

A brief guide to mobile AI chips

Mobile AI chips. What are they actually good for? In the recent months we’ve heard a lot about specialized silicon being used for machine learning in mobile devices. Apple’s new iPhones have their “neural engine”; Huawei’s Mate 10 comes with a “neural processing unit”; and companies that manufacture and design chips (like Qualcomm and ARM) are gearing up to supply AI-optimized hardware to the rest of the industry. (via The Verge)
