  • A Tesla owner went viral on TikTok after he posted a series of videos on issues with his Model S.
  • Mario Zelaya claims he was locked out of the car after the battery died, which would cost over $ 20,000 to fix.
  • Last year, a Finnish Tesla owner blew up his EV to protest a similar issue.

A Tesla owner said he was locked out of his Model S after the battery died — an issue he said the carmaker told him would cost over $ 20,000 to fix.

Last week, Mario Zelaya posted a TikTok video calling out the issue and it received over 15 million views.  In the TikTok, Zelaya said the battery on his Model S completely died, leaving him unable to get inside the vehicle or even access the ownership documents inside the car in order to sell it. The car also would not respond to a charge, he said.

"This is why you should never buy a Tesla people," Zelaya said in the video, calling the car a "piece of trash." He said he bought the car brand new for $ 140,000 in 2013.

Zelaya and a spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Insider ahead of publication.

The Tesla owner could have gained access to the vehicle manually by removing the front bumper or going in through the tire well, but he said he "didn't have time for that."

In an earlier video, the Toronto-based Tesla owner posted images of a service estimate from Tesla dated March 14. The estimate showed that a replacement battery for the electric car would cost over $ 28,000 in Canadian dollars or more than $ 21,000 US dollars.

The car needed the replacement after running for just over 77,000 miles, per the document the owner shared on TikTok. Tesla batteries are designed to run for 300,000 to 500,000 miles or about 21 to 25 years before they need to be replaced, Elon Musk has said. Last year, Electrek reported that Tesla owners have received battery pack replacement estimates between $ 20,000 to $ 30,000

Zelaya said in a separate video that he took the car in to Tesla after he received a "high voltage battery" warning message — an issue that could cause the EV battery to catch fire. He said he was told the issue would not be covered by a warranty.

When he later took the Model S into his country's regulatory agency, Transport Canada, the technicians told him the battery had rusted because the car's air conditioning unit's drain hose was positioned over the battery case and continually leaking water into the battery unit, Zelaya said. 

In a video from last week, Zelaya said he was finally able to sell the car after paying $ 30 for new ownership papers. The TikTok appears to show the new owner prying open the front bumper to gain access to the interior of the car.

"That's going to be the end of my Tesla journey," Zelaya said in the video. "It's out of my life. Keep it out of yours."

It's not the first time that Tesla owners have voiced concerns over quality control issues. Last year, a man from Finland filmed a video of himself blowing up his 2013 Tesla Model S after he discovered a replacement battery would cost $ 22,600. The man allegedly also had a water-damaged battery.

In August, Vox reported that owners have filed thousands of complaints about Tesla's service centers. Last year, Insider reported that drivers were taking to social media to report issues with their brand new Teslas, including poor paint jobs and misaligned car panels.

With many jurisdictions phasing out sales of new gas-powered cars in the coming years, it may not be a bad idea to have more clarity on EVs and what it's like to own one sooner rather than later.

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK—Few vehicles in the time we’ve been covering the industry have attracted—or sustained—quite the level of interest as Volkswagen’s ID Buzz. Part realization of two decades’ worth of concept cars and teases, part apology for dieselgate, it’s an electric minivan with retro-cool styling, built on a solid electric vehicle platform. US-spec ID Buzzes are still some way off—we won’t get the Buzz until 2024—but in the meantime, VW asked if we’d be interested in trying out the two-row, European-spec model, which is just about to go on sale the other side of the Atlantic.

Boxy microbuses have been a part of the VW lineup since 1949’s original Type 2, also known as a T1, Kombi, or Transporter. As time went on, the buses evolved to be more angular, and they eventually started to look like any other minivan. But as VW found with the Beetle concept in 1994, there’s a lot of affection out there for its early designs.

The first retro-looking revival attempt was a 2001 concept called the Microbus. This was before people realized you could daisy-chain immense amounts of laptop batteries together to make a viable electric vehicle, so the 2001 Microbus concept would have been powered by VW’s internal combustion engines—most commonly its ubiquitous and cheaty diesels, no doubt.

Future Motion’s Onewheel electric boards have added power and range over the years, but accessibility? Not so much. They’ve still been expensive and intimidating, not to mention clunky to carry around. That’s where the just-unveiled Onewheel Pint might help. It’s not only more affordable (relatively speaking) at $ 950, it’s gentler on newcomers who’d otherwise worry about crashing out.

Most notably, a Simplestop dismount feature streamlines the riding experience so that you won’t fly off while you’re still learning the ropes. It’s smaller (27 inches long) and lighter than past models, helping both its agility and portability. Future Motion drives that last point home by including a fold-out magnetic handle on the side — you’re clearly meant to carry this around for those moments you need

The catch? Not surprisingly, the Pint isn’t a long-range cruiser. You’re looking at 6 to 8 miles of range and a 16MPH top speed. The company pitches this as a board for coffee shop trips and the last leg of a commute, rather than something you’d ride all the way to work and back. While that seems appropriate, it does put the Pint at a disadvantage to the Boosted Mini X, which costs slightly more but roughly doubles the range.

You won’t have to wait too long to get the new Onewheel, at least. Future Motion has started pre-orders ahead of a May release, and those who buy in the first 48 hours (no later than March 13th) can snag bonus fenders, custom etched rails and other perks at no extra cost. The Pint still isn’t a trivial purchase by any stretch. It might, however, be the model that helps the Onewheel line expand beyond a niche audience.

Zero Motorcycles, the Tesla of the motorcycle world, announced the latest addition to its lineup of electric bikes today. The 2020 SR/F offers an air-cooled motor that can produce 110 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. The bike can reach a top speed of 120 MPH and travel 161 miles on a single charge. The base version of Zero’s latest bike will have a base price of $ 18,995

While the base package is impressive, Zero also has some add-ons for folks who want a little more out of their ride. The SR/F has an available additional power tank that increases the range of each ride by about 25 percent. There is also an extra-fast charging option that comes with the premium version of the bike. It offers a nearly full charge, from 0 to 95 percent, in just one hour. The premium model also has heated handlebars, in case you’re looking to treat yourself.

Zero Motorcycles

Similar to Tesla, Zero offers over-the-air updates for its bike. When new software is available, it’s delivered automatically to the machine, which runs Zero’s own software called Cypher III. The SR/F will also have its own dedicated app that riders can use to track their trips, share rides and receive alerts about any unexpected activity from the bike. It’ll also offer a customizable, full-color dash that will show the information that you want to see. Zero says the SR/F is the first fully “smart” motorcycle.

The Zero SR/F isn’t just a jump up in specs compared to most of the company’s previous models of motorcycles, it also puts distance between Zero and its competitors. Harley Davidson’s electric LiveWire motorcycle might be Zero’s highest-profile challenger, but that battery-powered bike is topped in just about every category by the SR/F — and the SR/F costs nearly $ 10,000 less than the LiveWire.

The video, filmed in the US, shows the unnamed woman desperately trying to fill her Tesla up with gasoline. The majority of gas stations in the US are self-service, and station employees seemingly didn’t notice the potentially explosive fill-up taking place a few yards away. Tesla’s entire fleet of vehicles are electric-only.

The video has already racked up an impressive 11 million views since it was posted on Saturday.

Now, you could forgive the bemused motorist a little, as hybrid cars did predate the fully-electric Tesla fleet. But judging by the online reaction, many were jealous of the woman’s apparent wealth more so than they were understanding of her confusion.

The Tesla driver becomes increasingly frustrated as she searches for the fuel tank on the outside of her electric vehicle.

When she eventually finds the electric charging port and tries to insert the fuel pump into it, a passerby intervenes to put her out of her misery. The two share a laugh and part ways.

Others questioned the authenticity of the video, however.

Several other users were markedly more sympathetic to the confused woman.
