Good Morning Britain‘s Dr Hilary Jones said the Government had only ever “advised” elderly Britons to self-isolate but conceded no blanket order was in place for the over-70s to stay home. Confusion arose during the weekend after reports suggested older citizens may be required to extend their coronavirus lockdown by a further 12 weeks to keep them from catching the novel coronavirus. Commenting on a statement from Health Secretary Matt Hancock from March, the GMB contributor said: “He used the word advice

“It was always advice, it was always guidance for over-70s to protect themselves.”

But Dr Hilary also warned about the “stark” statistics facing elderly Britons as the outbreak continues to rage across the country.

He continued: “Look, the stark statistics are these. If you are admitted to hospital with COVID-19, your mortality is roughly equivalent to your age.

“So, if you are over 70, your mortality could be 70 percent. That is why the Government has always said, ‘we advise you, our guidance is for you to stay home and stay safe’.”

Baroness Ros Altmann warned the Government the elderly may choose to ignore any new restrictive measure after seven weeks of lockdown.

She said: “If they are fit and healthy and need to get out for their own physical health then the idea that the government will tell them you are under house arrest while everybody else is out, and force them into solitary confinement.

“I think they wouldn’t accept it.”

In the coming week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be unveiling his plan to start lifting the restrictions to help return the UK to a state of normality.

Michael Gove has warned however the Government will be opting for a “phased” approach to avoid a second wave of the virus.

Mr Gove said: “A phased approach is one which allows us to monitor the impact that those changes are having on public health.

“And – if necessary, in a specific and localised way – that means that we can pause or even reintroduce those restrictions that might be required in order to deal with localised outbreaks.”

That tap water was filled with tiny amoebas that ate away at her brain cells.

The 69-year-old Seattle woman stumped doctors earlier this year, when she was admitted to hospital after suffering a seizure. After examining a CT scan taken of her brain, physicians thought she had a tumor. She entered surgery the next day.

However, an examination of tissue taken from her brain during surgery showed that her problem wasn’t a tumor at all. It was microscopic amoebas that were feasting on her brain.

“There were these amoebae all over the place just eating brain cells. We didn’t have any clue what was going on, but when we got the actual tissue we could see it was the amoebae,” Dr. Charles Cobbs, a neurosurgeon at Swedish Medical Center, told the Seattle Times. 

Despite the surgeons’ best efforts, the woman died a month later. Now a case study recently published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases has shed light on how the amoeba entered her brain. The study was authored by Cobbs and others who worked on the woman’s case.

The answer lies in a common instrument known as a neti pot, a teapot-shaped product used to rinse out the sinuses and nasal cavity. It’s a simple contraption that can be purchased at major retailers across the US.

However, using tap water with a neti pot isn’t safe, according to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Instead, distilled or sterile water should be used, or boiled and cooled water.

It is also acceptable to use a filter specifically designed to trap potentially infectious organisms. Although the woman did use a store-bought filter, it likely wasn’t one approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 

As such, when the 69-year-old shot the tap water up her nasal cavity, she essentially injected the brain-eating infection known as granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE).

But even though the woman used tap water, the odds were in her favor that she would have been fine. In fact, her case of GAE is the first to be linked to the washing of the nasal cavity, according to Keenan Piper, a member of the Swedish team that produced the study.

As if that wasn’t bad enough luck, the woman also died from the type of amoeba that is least-known by doctors – Balamuthia mandrillaris. It moves slowly and can take weeks or months to cause death. That aligns with what the victim experienced, as her first likely symptom was a red sore on her nose that doctors kept misdiagnosing as the common skin condition rosacea.

“It’s such an incredibly uncommon disease it was not on anyone’s radar that this initial nose sore would be related to her brain,” Piper said.

Today, MIT released the results of a global survey on the moral and ethical decisions that autonomous vehicles should be programmed to make. The survey reveals that general preferences include prioritizing human lives over animals, younger and healthier people over the elderly and saving more lives over fewer lives. People also preferred to spare bystanders (who were obeying the law) over jaywalkers.

The study is unique because of its sheer scale; over 2 million people from 200+ countries participated in the survey. It presented variations the “Trolley Problem,” a classic ethical dilemma that asks participants to choose who to save in the event that an out-of-control trolley is endangering people. When it comes to autonomous vehicles, the software may have to prioritize whether to swerve into a group of people to avoid a head-on collision or decide whether to save its own passengers at the expense of lives in another vehicle.

While the survey results revealed general preferences, there were variations and trends based on where respondents were from. “The main preferences were to some degree universally agreed upon,” lead author Edmond Awad, a postdoc at MIT, said in a release. “But the degree to which they agree with this or not varies among different groups or countries.” An example is that in “eastern” countries, including many in Asia, respondents were not in favor of prioritizing young lives over the elderly.

The full results of the study will be published in the journal Nature. It will be interesting to see if autonomous vehicle programmers take results into account when determining the ethical and moral preferences of the vehicles they are working on.

At least three people have been confirmed killed and more casualties are feared, after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit north of Osaka Prefecture in western Japan, local media report.

An 80-year-old man and a young 9yo girl were killed in Japan, crushed by collapsing walls, public broadcaster NHK reported. Several others are reported in a state of “cardiopulmonary arrest,” a condition usually used by Japanese authorities until a formal examination has been conducted to confirm death.

At least 51 people were injured, mainly across the northern Osaka and neighboring prefectures, the broadcaster reports, citing data from local police and fire departments.

Some 170,000 households remain without power in Osaka, as well as neighboring Hyogo prefecture, according to local electricity operator Kansai.

Besides electricity outages, at least one house caught fire and several major water pipes burst following the quake, according to footage shown by local TV. The jolt struck during the Monday morning rush hour, and forced a halt to some rail services. As a precaution, flights were also delayed in Osaka airport.

While there were no reports of widespread damage, Japanese authorities are still assessing the impact, with PM Shinzo Abe emphasizing that the safety of residents is the government’s top priority at the moment.

Cold housing can lead to chronic conditions, like lung and heart diseases and poor mental health, as well as heart attacks, strokes and falls.

As part of the NHS’s Integrated Care System, residents who qualify will be offered stair lifts, boilers, insulation, heating and grants.

Among the local authorities in England taking part in the scheme – which sees the NHS share budgets and resources with councils – is Wycombe District in Buckinghamshire.

Medics and social care providers refer patients for stair lifts or central heating as part of their “Healthy Homes on Prescription” project.

Pensioners or people with a long-term chronic health condition can apply for grants of up to £5,000 without means testing to help prevent hospital admissions and GP visits.

A King’s Fund and National Housing Federation report put the NHS cost of poor housing at £1.4billion a year.

It states that reducing excess cold in homes would save the NHS around £848million a year and reducing all falls in the home could save it £435million.

Three-quarters of deaths related to falls are at home.

Simple home modifications such as installing handrails, outside lighting and slip-resistant surfaces resulted in a 39 per cent drop in injuries and a 26 per cent cut in medical treatment.

Simon Stevens, NHS England’s chief executive, said: “Well-designed homes that are warm and hazard-free reduce the risk of accidents and falls as well as major cardiovascular and respiratory hospitalisations.

“That is why the NHS is working with our council, voluntary sector and housing colleagues who can make a huge difference to the lives of millions of our fellow citizens.”

Councillor Izzi Seccombe, at the Local Government Association, said: “Councils are determined to show benefits of cost-effective prevention work.”
