You’ve fought your way through Skyrim and Oblivion, soon you can eat your way through the continent of Tamriel. Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, the author behind the official Game of Thrones and Warcraft cookbooks, is tackling the Elder Scrolls series next with a new book due in March, Destructoid reports. According to the Amazon listing, it’ll feature more than sixty recipes for dishes like Apple Cabbage Stew and the ever-popular Sweetrolls.

Hopefully, they’ll make use of more spices than what we’re used to from traditional medieval cuisine. Next up, maybe Monroe-Cassel can explore the food of Final Fantasy, especially since FFXV motivated us to cook up some meals of our own.

Charmed Sneak Peek: The Sisters Meet (and Clash With) Their First Elder https://briefnews.eu/charmed-sneak-peek-the-sisters-meet-and-clash-with-their-first-elder/ https://briefnews.eu/charmed-sneak-peek-the-sisters-meet-and-clash-with-their-first-elder/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 00:03:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charmed-sneak-peek-the-sisters-meet-and-clash-with-their-first-elder/

Historically speaking, the Charmed Ones haven’t exactly been chummy with supernatural authority figures, and it looks like some things never change. Sunday’s episode of Charmed (The CW, 9/8c) introduces the sisters to their first Elder, and TVLine has your exclusive first look at the awkward encounter.

“So these Elders are just sadists who kill anyone who gets in their way? That’s how they operate?” Mel asks Harry while an Elder named Charity (played by Fuller House‘s Virginia Williams) pokes and prods at Angela Wu, who remains chained up in the sisters’ attic while they figure out what to do about the evil harbinger demon living inside her.

“If they say killing the creature is the only way, it’s the only way,” Harry tells Mel, eliciting an expected — and, let’s be real, pretty deserved — eye roll. (Seriously, who is he calling a “creature,” anyway?) Charity does her best to explain the situation as delicately as possible, but to be honest, I’m more interested in the exchange between Harry and Charity. Do I detect… vibes between those two?

Hit PLAY on our exclusive sneak peek of Sunday’s episode above, then drop a comment with your thoughts on the Charmed reboot below.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

LOS ANGELES—A true The Elder Scrolls game on mobile? Not exactly. Recently-announced The Elder Scrolls Blades from Bethesda Game Studios is not a massive, free-roaming, systems-based super RPG. Instead, it’s a casual dungeon crawler with a gorgeous presentation—and more bells and whistles than your typical mobile RPG.

I’m a passionate fan of the franchise, and I played the new mobile game for about a half an hour at Bethesda’s E3 booth this week. In a similar way to spinoffs The Elder Scrolls Online and The Elder Scrolls Legends, I recognized the franchise’s DNA but I also recognized that the growing game studio is trying something different here.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The streamlined game has top-notch visuals, the combat draws influences from the right places, and it feels entirely native to the device on which it runs. The game I played intrigued me, but I didn’t get a sense of what might keep someone coming back for days or weeks after the initial download. Judging from the modes described in the initial announcement, that could be because the most interesting mode—the one in which you play through a story to build a town with non-player characters (NPCs) in it—wasn’t on display at the show.

LOS ANGELES—Video game publisher Bethesda hosted a rollicking pre-E3 press conference on Sunday evening with a number of game reveals from existing franchises like Doom, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Rage. But the publisher’s most tantalizing reveals were also its shortest ones: long-rumored game series Starfield. and the first mainline Elder Scrolls entry since 2011.

Bethesda director Todd Howard closed the conference with Bethesda’s two-part tease of future games. The first, Starfield, was described as “a brand-new, next-generation, single-player game. This one is in an all-new epic franchise. Our first wholly original franchise in 25 years.”

Starfield‘s reveal trailer began with a cinematic look at a planet’s edge in space, followed by a floating satellite in its vicinity that is abruptly ripped through time. No release date was announced. Its description counters the repeated rumor that Starfield might revolve around smartphone play. Instead, Howard’s brief description may point to a wait until successors to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One reach the market.

‘Systemic failure of world order’: Kissinger & elder statesmen take on modern challenges https://briefnews.eu/systemic-failure-of-world-order-kissinger-elder-statesmen-take-on-modern-challenges/ https://briefnews.eu/systemic-failure-of-world-order-kissinger-elder-statesmen-take-on-modern-challenges/#respond Thu, 25 Jan 2018 23:01:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/systemic-failure-of-world-order-kissinger-elder-statesmen-take-on-modern-challenges/

In testimony before the Senate, national security strategists from the Nixon, Reagan and Bush administrations identified nuclear annihilation, climate change and emerging technologies as major challenges facing the US.

Former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger and George Shultz were joined at the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday by Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. They all referred to the rising threat of nuclear annihilation through the erosion of international cohesion rather than consolidation.

North Korea

“My immediate concern is if North Korea still possess a miliarity nuclear capability the impact on the proliferation of nuclear weapons might be fundamental, because if North Korea could maintain its capability in the face of opposition by China and the US and disapproval by the rest of the world, other countries will think this is the way for achieving international prominence and gain an upper hand in international disputes,” Kissinger told the committee.

He said the Iranian agreement paradoxically legitimized the emergence of Iran as a nuclear power and the North Korean situation was even more acute “because they are closer to developing weapons than Iran.”

“We need to make a distinction between measures that relieve the immediate situation but make the ultimate situation even more severe,” Kissinger proffered as a solution, “all the more so because the problem of Iran is just down the road.”

Skirting over how President Ronald Reagan escalated tensions with the USSR with his missile defense system program, Shultz said Reagan thought nuclear weapons were immoral.

“In those days, people seemed to have an appreciation of what would be the result if a nuclear weapon were ever used,” Shultz told senators. “I fear people have lost that sense of dread. And now we see everything going in the other direction with nuclear proliferation. The more countries with nuclear weapons, the more likely one is going to go off somewhere.”

Shultz’s major concern was over unregulated fission material and how easy, once acquired, it was to make a weapon that “can blow up the world.”

Reagan’s former secretary of state stressed the importance of having a different relationship with Russia, since “after all, Russia and US have the most nuclear weapons to start something.”

To deal with proliferation, he said,“we need to put a stop sign in front of Russia and make them come to their senses, and then start working with them.”

For Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, however, the threat of nuclear annihilation was not existential.

“To be an existential threat to annihilate the United States, it occurs to me you have to have the capability and the desire. China has the capability, but does not have the desire – she has too much skin in the game. Russia has the capability but does not have the desire, she prefers to use other methods to undermine the US and Eastern Europe, and Ukraine,” Armitage told the committee. “North Korea and Iran, they don’t yet have the capability and their desire is unknown. ISIS [Islamic State] and terrorists group have the intention but they don’t have the capability. So we have to keep our eye on the ball, and the ball is to keep our peer competitors from becoming our adversaries.”

Middle East

For Kissinger, current events in the Middle East represent a disintegration of the international system that has existed since the end of the Second World War.

“Every country is either a combatant or a theater of conflict,” Kissinger told the committee. He said the defeat of IS would lead to the question of ‘what happens next,’ and the concern about who will occupy the territories it once held.

“The Iranian and Russian forces will become dominant and we will see a belt emerging that goes from Tehran to Beirut,” said Kissinger, arguing that this “undermines the structure of the region and creates long-term challenges.”

US, Russia & China

In Kissinger’s view, the dominant element of world politics will be the great power relationships between the US, China and Russia. He said the major questions going forward will be the strategic relationship between these countries vis-a-vis the prospect of peace, and if their values are compatible enough to encourage an agreed-upon legitimacy.

“The balance of power must be maintained,” Kissinger said. “This is the key issue in our relationship.”

Kissinger said the US needs a cooperative Russia for peace in the world, because of its reach. Russia has a large military and covers 11 time zones with no natural borders.

“I would now look for a way to establish meaningful dialogue with Russia,” he said. The major sticking point would be Ukraine, which Kissinger says would be “unwise” to include in NATO, but “it’s also impossible to let it exist as a satellite of Russia.”

“Ukraine is sort of a the borderland of this conception,” said Kissinger, noting that an ideal solution would be to have it politically and economically part of the West, but neutral towards Russia like Finland was during the Cold War.

“The question is if one can think of a military arrangement there that would not be confrontational,” he said.

Shultz said that advances in small, smart cheap weapons using nanotechnology and drones “will redefine the battlefield” and could be readily employed by NATO allies.

New tech, old threats

Shultz pointed out that technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D printing, and drones are causing massive changes in the economic and political spheres, and will inevitably change warfare.

“What is happening because of these forces is de-globalization. It is already happening. This is not something for the future,” said Shultz. “It is becoming more possible to produce the things you want close to where you are, so the advantages of low labor costs are disappearing.”

Such changes he argued would reduce shipping costs, have an impact on energy, and a major impact on low-cost labor.

“It is a revolution in the economy, and has all sorts of security implications,” Shultz said.

“Robotics, 3D printing and AI are driving manufacturing and causing a big shift from labor to automation. Robot sales are estimated to reach 400,000 in 2018. Collaborative robots (Colbot) assisting human workers will dramatically increase human productivity.”

How Bethesda brought The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to VR https://briefnews.eu/how-bethesda-brought-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-to-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/how-bethesda-brought-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-to-vr/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 15:48:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-bethesda-brought-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-to-vr/ Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is available now for PSVR and PC. With hundreds of hours of gameplay between the core campaign, side content, and three expansions players will be able to lose themselves once again in the frosted wastelands of Skyrim.

When Skyrim originally released all the way back in 2011 it was lauded as a landmark achievement for role-playing games, and its impact on the industry is still being felt to this day. Bethesda teamed up with Escalation Studios to port the title over to VR and rebuild many of the controls and interfacing options from the ground up. On PSVR you can play either with a Dualshock 4 gamepad or two PS Move controllers with full head-tracking and a host of movement options. Casting spells means controlling each hand individually, swinging the sword with your hand, and blocking attacks with a shield strapped to your arm. It’s Skyrim like you’ve never experienced it before.

We also got the chance to send over a handful of questions to the lead producer at Bethesda Game Studios, Andrew Scharf, before the game’s launch to learn more about its development and what it took to bring the vast world of Tamriel to VR for the very first time.

UploadVR: All of Skyrim is in VR, which is quite ambitious. What were the biggest challenges with porting the game to a new format like VR?

Andrew Scharf: PlayStation VR games need to be running at 60 fps at all times, otherwise it can be an uncomfortable experience for the player.  We’re working with a great team at Escalation Studios, who are among the best VR developers in the industry and with their help, we were able to not only get the game running smoothly, but redesign and shape Skyrim’s mechanics to feel good in VR.

It’s definitely a challenge figuring out the best way to display important information in VR. Take the World Map and the Skills menu for example — we wanted to give the player an immersive 360 degree view when choosing where to travel, or viewing the constellations and deciding which perk to enable.  For the HUD, we needed to make sure important information was in an area where the player could quickly refer to it, while also preventing the player from feeling claustrophobic by being completely surrounded by user interface elements.

UploadVR: What are the major differences with developing for PSVR and HTC Vive?

Andrew Scharf: The major difference that took iteration is the single camera that the PSVR uses, versus the HTC Vive base stations. In order to ensure an optimal VR experience, the PS Move Controllers need to be in view of the camera, which means players need to always be facing in that direction.  Early on, we found that this was a bit of a challenge — players would put on the headset and then turn all the way around and start going in a random direction.  One solution to help keep players facing the right way was to anchor important UI elements so if you can see the compass in front of you, you’re facing in the right direction.

The PlayStation Move Controllers also has several buttons while the HTC Vive Controllers primarily have a multi-function trackpad, so figuring out input and control schemes that felt natural to the platform was tricky, but we feel really good where we’ve landed with controls and locomotion for both Skyrim and Fallout VR.

UploadVR: What are some of the ways that you think VR adds to the game? For example, in my last demo deflecting arrows with my shield felt really, really satisfying. How has VR redefined how you enjoy Skyrim?

Andrew Scharf: It’s a huge perspective shift which completely changes how you approach playing the game. Part of the fun of making combat feel natural in VR is now you have some tricks up your sleeve that you didn’t have before. You can fire the bow and arrow as fast and you’re able to nock and release, lean around corners to peek at targets, shield bash with your left hand while swinging a weapon with your right, and my favorite is being able to attack two targets at the same time with weapons or spells equipped in each hand.

You can also precisely control where you pick up and drop objects, and in general be able to interact with the world a little more how you’d expect — so like me, you’re probably going to take this skill and use it to obsessively organize your house.

UploadVR: Were there ever considerations to add voice recognition for talking with NPCs? Selecting floating words as dialog choices breaks the immersion a little bit.

Andrew Scharf: We thought about a lot of different options for new features and interfaces during development. In the end we chose to prioritize making the game feel great in VR. At this time, voice recognition for dialogue is not included in the game.

UploadVR: Was smooth locomotion with PS Move something that was always planned for the game, or was it added after feedback from fans at E3?

Andrew Scharf: There were a bunch of options we were considering from the very beginning of development. We wanted to ensure that people who were susceptible to VR motion sickness could still experience the world of Skyrim comfortably, so we focused on new systems we would have to add (like our teleportation movement scheme) to help alleviate any tolerance issues first.

For smooth locomotion, there’s a good number of us here who spend a lot of time playing VR games and see what works well and what doesn’t, but ultimately it came down to figuring out the best approach for us.  There were unique challenges with Skyrim that we had to iterate on, from having both main and offhand weapons, the design of the PlayStation Move controllers, long-term play comfort, and ultimately, making sure you can still play Skyrim in whichever playstyle you prefer.

UploadVR: Mods won’t be in the game at launch, but what about the future? Do you want to bring other Elder Scrolls games into VR? And what about Fallout 4 VR on PSVR?

Andrew Scharf: We’ve definitely learned a lot, but as far as what future features or titles we will or won’t bring to VR, that remains to be seen. For now our focus is on launching and supporting the VR versions of Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Our goal with all our VR titles is to bring it to as many platforms as possible. When and if we have more information to share we will let everyone know.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR will launch without mod support https://briefnews.eu/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-vr-will-launch-without-mod-support/ https://briefnews.eu/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-vr-will-launch-without-mod-support/#respond Sun, 05 Nov 2017 02:31:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-vr-will-launch-without-mod-support/

Earlier this week at a private PlayStation press event in San Francisco, CA we got the chance to go hands-on with a full, updated build of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR for PlayStation VR (PSVR) and came away impressed. Previous demos were teleportation movement only and now they’ve added full, smooth locomotion features with both Dualshock 4 and PS Move controllers.

When Skyrim VR releases for PSVR later this month it will include not only the full base game, but all three expansions (Hearthfire, Dawnguard, and Dragonborn) will be included in the package as well. For those unaware, a reasonable estimate for the amount of time it’d take to complete all of that content is easily upwards of over 100 hours. One big question though on everyone’s minds is: Will Skyrim VR have mod support?

Mods have been a huge part of The Elder Scrolls series for years on PC and with the release of Skyrim Special Edition on PS4 and Xbox One, console players finally got a taste of the magic that is tweaking and modifying games to your heart’s content. Want more spells? No problem. Want a few dozen more swords or new dungeons to explore? Go for it. Modding Skyrim made an already nearly limitless game truly endless. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that support will make its way to the VR iteration.

In a gameplay livestream with GameSpot Bethesda assistant community director Matt Grandstaff, addressed the topic:

“Presently there is no mod support in the game. If it’s something we can figure out as a possibility we’ll let everybody know, but right now [Skyrim VR is] everything that’s in the base game plus all the DLC content.”

It’s a bummer for fans that may have held out hope that mod support would come to the PSVR version since the PS4 version has it, but the absence makes sense. Many of the visuals are downgraded in the PSVR edition and use different assets, so it isn’t exactly as easy as just porting over the same mods. Plus, many of the game files and interaction designs on the backend will be different to accommodate motion controls and head tracking.
