Tennis elbow is common and causes pain around the outside of the elbow. While many people associate the condition with the sport, it can actually be the result of every day activities.

Anyone can get it, but tennis elbow is nothing to worry about as it usually clears up on its own.

You may experience pain on the outside of your upper forearm, just below the bend of your elbow, when lifting or bending your arm, when gripping small objects, such as a pen, or when twisting your forearm, such as turning a door handle or opening a jar.

Difficulty extending your arm fully may also occur.

If the condition impacts how you go about your day, there are four thing you can do to improve symptoms and speed up recovery, according to the NHS.

The first thing it recommends you do is rest your injured arm and stop doing the activity that’s causing the problem.

Holding a cold compress, such as a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel, against your elbow for a few minutes several times a day can also help ease the pain.

The healthy body adds: “Taking painkillers, such as paracetamol, may help reduce mild pain caused by tennis elbow.

“Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, can also be used to help reduce inflammation.

“Physiotherapy may be recommended in more severe and persistent cases.

“Massaging and manipulating the affected area ay help relieve the pain and stiffened, and improve the range of movement in your arm.”

Most cases of tennis elbow last between six months and two years.

As a last resort surgery may be used to remove the damaged part of the tendon.

To prevent getting tennis elbow in the first place there are certain steps you can take to protect your arm muscles and tendons.

Bupa says you should think about the repetitive actions you do and try to avoid or change them.

You should take breaks during or between taste that involve using your arms.

If you’re lifting, carry the weight close to your body and keep your palms facing upwards.

If you play a sport, make sure you’re using the right technique. You may want to get a coach to help you with this.

Finally, make sure you’re using equipment that’s suitable for you. For example, make sure your racquet handle is the right size.

If you regularly get a stiff neck there are four stretches you can do to remedy aches and pains.

Aussie flu is worrying a leading expert on the influenza virus, as cases continue to rise in the over-65s.

The public should prepare themselves for a flu epidemic, as the spread of the deadly infection continues to rise, said Professor John Oxford.

He recommended coughing into your elbow instead of your hands, as people were less likely to touch you there.

Aussie flu has spread throughout the UK, and has been recorded in every postcode.

“It is not an epidemic at the moment,” said Professor Oxford. Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, he said: “It is worrying, I am a bit worried myself. I’m particularly worried by figures that show it is creeping into the [over] 65 group.

“We haven’t had a big flu year for several years, but this year it could be an epidemic. The curve for figures of deaths is going up but we don’t know if it is going to keep going up.

Prepare yourself as if it is going up.”

Oxford suggested staying at least five foot away from other people to lower your risk of becoming infected with the H3N2 virus.

“Social distancing – keep away from people. About five foot minimum,” he said.

“The other thing you can do is, cough into your elbow, as no-one ever grasps your elbow, so you can’t pass it on.”

The cough – dubbed the Vampire Cough – could lower the spread of the infection.

Public Health England and the NHS recommended coughing or sneezing into a tissue, and throwing it away immediately.

The flu jab could also help to protect against the Aussie flu infection, said Professor Oxford.

“It isn’t too late to get the flu vaccine now. I’m sure a GP would be quite pleased to vaccinate you.

“You can take action, you are not at the total mercy of this virus.”

The flu virus is the most “changeable” virus on the planet, said Oxford.

While we know a lot about flu, we still don’t know why the Spanish flu killed 50 million people globally 100 years ago, he added.

Dr Sara Kayat, speaking on ITV’s This Morning, said: “We do get a lot of people with viral illness, but with the flu you know you have it you don’t want to even come to your GP. You just want to stay in bed and take paracetamol.

“Most people who come to see me are too perky to have the flu. My advice is, if you think you have it, stay home, so you don’t spread it to anyone else. If you end up becoming very unwell, if your fever isn’t coming down, call us or call 111.”

Earwax is naturally pushed out of the ear, and patients shouldn’t ever stick things in their ears to clear it out, warns the American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO).

The motion of the jaw moving up and down as we chew pushes out old earwax.

It’s then washed away when showering, or flakes off and blown away by wind.

But, patients seem to think that earwax is bad, and should be cleared out, said the AAO.

“Ear health starts with [patients], and there are many things they should do as well as many things that they should stop doing immediately to prevent damage to their ears,” said AAO guideline chair, Dr Seth Schwartz.

“There is an inclination for people to want to clean their ears because they believe earwax is an indication of uncleanliness. This misinformation leads to unsafe ear health habits.

“Patients often think that they are preventing earwax from building up by cleaning out their ears with cotton swabs, paper clips, ear candles, or any number of unimaginable things that people put in their ears.

“The problem is that this effort to eliminate earwax is only creating further issues because the earwax is just getting pushed down and impacted further into the ear canal.” 

Pushing earwax further down the ear canal can cause ear pain, itching, ringing in the ear, hearing loss and a feeling of fullness deep in the ear.

It can also lead to discharge pouring from the ear, a cough, and an unpleasant odour originating from the ear.

Never put anything smaller than an elbow in your ear, AAO said.

It could cause a cut in the ear canal, or a hole in the ear drum.

If you’re concerned about a build-up of earwax, you should see a GP, the organisation recommended.

Alternatively, the NHS said eardrops can be bought from a pharmacy to soften earwax, so it falls out naturally.

Earwax build-ups could be caused by having narrow, or hairy ear canals, the NHS said.

Elderly patients were more at risk, as earwax becomes drier with age.

The band, whose cover of The Beatles’ Golden Slumbers is the soundtrack to this year’s clip, have been given odds of 6/1 by Paddy Power to reach the summit on the chart issued December 22.

Only George Michael (13/8), Ed Sheeran (4/1) and Mariah Carey (4/1) have better odds.

William Hill have also narrowed their odds down to 6/1 from 100/1, ahead of this year’s X Factor winner (9/1).

A spokesperson said: “Elbow are not associated with Christmas and as such were massive outsiders.

“We think the song is very good and a genuine contender for the festive number one.”

The song has proven to be a very popular element of the new commercial.

“Love the @johnlewisretail ad but I love this version of #goldenSlumbers by @Elbow even more. @Guy_Garvey ‘s voice never fails! #mozTheMonster,” one person tweeted.

Another wrote: “Not as much of a tear jerker as the old man, penguin, or bear but still good and obvs love the soundtrack by @Elbow (Guy Garvey should just be the voice of Christmas full stop)! #MozTheMonster.”

A third said: “#MozTheMonster Elbow can do no wrong and their version of Golden slumbers is perfect, the advert is fun and we don’t want to be balling our eyes out every year, this one is touching and clever.”

If the Moz the Monster-endorsed Golden Slumbers does go all the way, it will be the first John Lewis Christmas ad song since 2013 to do so.

Lily Allen’s Somewhere Only We Know was the last song on the retailer’s festive treat to hit No1, with last year’s track – One Day I’ll Fly Away by Vaults – going no higher than No53.

Gabrielle Aplin’s spin on The Power of Love (2012) is the only other track from the ads to hit the top spot.

Ellie Goulding’s Your Song hit No2 in 2010, while Slow Moving Millie’s Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want charted at No31.

Tom Odell’s Real Love peaked at No7, while in 2015 Auora’s Half The World Away was No15.

The John Lewis advert has just been released, meaning Elbow’s effort is expected to scale the iTunes rankings over the coming hours.

Currently the digital store’s rundown is dominated by Rita Ora’s Anywhere (No1), Camila Cabello’s Havana (No2) and Ed Sheeran’s Perfect (No3).

Last year’s Christmas Number One was Clean Bandit’s Rockabye.

It was reported yesterday that Michelle McManus, former Pop Idol winner, is also in this year’s race with a charity single.

Elbow have never had a number one single, and have in fact only graced the Top 10 once: with 2008’s One Day Like This, which reached No4 several years after its release thanks to use at the London Olympics.

They’ve had much more success with their albums: their last two records, 2014’s The Take Off And Landing Of Everything and this year’s Little Fictions both hit the summit.
