Brexit is less than one year away with the UK to leave the EU on March 29 next year.

Travel industry experts have raised concerns regarding a number of issues such as visa controls and open sky agreements.

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary has been vocal in his concerns that planes could even be grounded if an agreement is not made.

However another aspect to cause concern is the continuation of the EHIC card, which provides free emergency care to people in the EU and affects 27 million Britons.

Could Britons be left stranded abroad without urgent health care?

The EHIC card currently allows Britons to get free or reduced healthcare when travelling to countries in the EU.

It is not a replacement for travel insurance but it allows Britons to use healthcare services abroad.

However, there may not be a guarantee that this will continue with the UK is no longer part of the EU.

The Lords EU committee report in March stated: “In the absence of an agreement on future relations that covers this topic, the rights to reciprocal healthcare currently enjoyed by 27 million UK citizens, thanks to the EHIC, will cease after Brexit.”

Yet there is another way in which the UK could be included, by looking at countries outside of the EU which are still allowed to reap the benefits.

The European Economic Area (EEA) nations include Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Switzerland is not part of either the EU or EAA but does have the same rights.

They are also covered by the existing healthcare arrangements despite not being in the EU, something which the UK could decide to do instead.

The Lords EU committee also stated: “‘Without more detail from the Government about how exactly it intends to maintain reciprocal healthcare arrangements or provide a suitable replacement, this report argues that we should not take the future of UK-EU reciprocal healthcare for granted.”

Yet Britons should also always take out travel insurance which will protect them from emergency health problems when travelling Europe.

ABTA’s director of public affairs Alan Wardle told TTG: “What needs to happen now is for the government to make progress setting out what the future relationship will look like.”

EHIC cards are currently free for British citizens and cover people for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions when abroad.

However, it does not cover treatment that is not currently offered in a country to its own citizens.

Many may not realise that theirs has expired, with 5.3 million in 2016 travelling with one that had ended.

Martin Lewis warned travellers to check point nine on the card which has the date it is valid.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is extremely important for any British families heading abroad for a trip.

The card enables Britons to medical care in a European country, depending on what the injury or illness is.

However, over 54 per cent of people think that it allows them any free medical care in Europe, according to a survey from GoCompare.

By thinking this, holiday goers could be in for a nasty surprise.

The EHIC card only allows free medical care to the same level that the state offers to the citizens of that country.

However, it doesn’t cover the medical attention if it isn’t something that would be offered to locals living there.

Therefore if something like a broken leg or multiple injuries that may cost the citizens of the country, then it will also cost British travellers.

It may come as a shock to many travellers.

It also doesn’t cover instances such as air ambulances or medical repatriation, as well as any treatment that Britons are going abroad specifically for.

This needs to be covered by travel insurance policies, providing they also offer adequate cover for what is being done on the holiday.

Therefore without travel insurance as well, it can cost tens of thousands of pounds if something does go wrong in a foreign country.

Caroline Lloyd, travel insurance spokesperson at Gocompare.com, commented: “Having an EHIC can help you to access free or, more likely, discounted emergency medical services whilst abroad but it’s not a guarantee that you won’t have to pay anything.

“Having an EHIC may also mean that you don’t have to claim on your travel insurance and pay an excess for minor injuries.

“Holidaymakers should always arrange suitable travel insurance to ensure they’re covered for medical treatment and repatriation if necessary. £1m of medical cover should be adequate for most situations.

“Look at it as complementing your own travel insurance rather than replacing it otherwise you may end up with a hefty medical bill.”

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives you access to GPs or state hospitals in the EU at the same price as a local, yet more than five million are out-of date and invalid. 

Speaking on This Morning, Martin advised people to check the expiry date (point nine) on the bottom right of your card now. 

He said: “If it’s already expired, or is about to, renew it now by applying on the EHIC website, or by calling 0300 330 1350.” 

Those who need a new one should remember not to pay for it. 

Martin, 45, said: “They’re free and any site charging you is a con – even if it’s promising a fast track.

“Generally, it’ll take about seven to 10 days for it to come through, but it can be quicker.” 

Families should also remember tat kids must have their own cards. 

The Money Saving Expert mentioned some other top tips for if you’re going on holiday this summer. 

You don’t need to show your boarding pass in airport shops, except at duty free. 

He said: “There’s no legal or security requirement for you to show your boarding pass in any airport shop, with the exception of Duty Free (you must show it there whatever you’re buying). 

“They ask because if you are travelling outside of the European Union (your boarding pass proves this), the shop can reclaim the VAT paid. 

“Yet this VAT should really (in my view) be passed back to the customer. So I believe you should make a point and politely decline showing them your pass unless they do. 

“Thankful as this campaign has been running a couple of years, it’s already started to have an impact. For example, if you’re travelling outside the EU then WHI Smiths and Boots do for individual items over £6 and £5.”

Martin also advised that if you want to take cash on holiday, don’t leave it until the airport.

The airport knows you’re a captive customer and will bump up the price. 

If you’ve left it latest least pre-order for airport pick up and you’ll get better rates.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is a free card available to all British citizens, for use throughout the European Union. 

It enables access to state-provided healthcare in any of the 27 EU countries, Switzerland and nations in the European Economic Area (EEA) including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. 

Should you need medical treatment abroad, the EHIC gives you access to GPs and in-patient hospital visits. 

Following the Brexit vote, concerns were raised about the future of the health card for Britons. 

But last week David Davis gave the strongest indication yet that holidays won’t be affected after Britain leaves the EU.

The Brexit Secretary insisted British tourists on holiday in the European Union will continue to get free healthcare after Brexit.

He said he will seek a continuation of the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) system in forthcoming negotiations, and vowed to offer EU citizens free access to the NHS in return.

If Brussels officials reject his pledge, Mr Davis said the UK Government will foot the bill on behalf of its citizens.

Speaking on BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, Mr Davis said: “We are looking to see if we can get a continuation of the EHIC scheme as it now exists.

“Of course, if we can’t get one then we will provide one unilaterally, but that is what we are looking to.

“We are trying to ensure that every individual citizen gets their current position as it were, locked in place for them, so that the anxiety can go.”

But the welcome news has come with a warning to holidaymakers about the limits of relying on the EHIC. 

The NHS said: “The EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance and will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs.”

Many travellers wrongly believe the European health card entitles them to far more medical cover than it actually does, which can lead to eyewatering medical bills at the end of a holiday. 

If you simply need to visit the doctor or pay a quick visit to emergency, the card can be very helpful. 

But relying on your EHIC as a substitute for travel insurance is not recommended, as you could be left with a bill for thousands of pounds if you need more serious treatment. 

Emergency airlifts, delay and cancellation protection and cover against loss or theft are all extras that only your travel insurance can provide. 

The future of the EHIC is still by no means certain, and lies in the hands of Brexit negotiators as they work to secure a deal by 2019.

Formal negotiations for Brexit are well underway, as the Government works to secure Britain’s future relationship with the European Union. 

There are many aspects of travel which are set to be affected, including the probability that new visas will be introduced. 

One of the topics up for consideration is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). 

The EHIC is a privilege afforded to all UK citizens travelling within the EU.

It provides tourists with state provided essential medical treatment, should anything go wrong while you’re abroad. 

The EHIC covers temporary stays in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. 

According to the Department of Health, there are over 27 million people who possess one of the health cards.

While the EHIC remains valid after the triggering of Article 50, speculation is rife as to whether it will be axed in 2019 by the time Brexit is complete. 

Considering non-EU countries like Iceland and Switzerland partake in the EHIC scheme, it’s possible Britain will follow in their footsteps. 

The official advice from the UK Government said: “The EU should be keen to keep Britain on-board the EHIC scheme, as we return billions in health costs and funding to the European Union. 

“Moreover, millions of Europeans continue to visit Britain, with a modest number ending up requiring care and treatment in our hospitals. 

“If we do leave EHIC, the EU is also at risk of a decline in British visitors, given the risk of massive up-front costs to travellers if they are injured or have an accident.”

Another reason the EU might keep Britain in EHIC is due to the impact on tourism. 

The UK’s EHIC service explained: “EHIC helps support its many tourism destinations like Spain, which relies on British tourism to keep local economy healthy, regardless of our EU status. 

“If the country does withdraw from the scheme, the impact of the loss of EHIC membership will see British tourists go to non-EU destinations or stay at home, especially with regard to those who cannot afford comprehensive health insurance. 

“As a result, we can expect tour operators and insurers to increase the value and facilities covered by travel insurance to help keep Britain interested in European travel.”

However, if Britain cuts ties with the EEA as negotiations progress, this would render the EHIC nonexistent. 

When questioned over the future of the EHIC card in March, the Brexit secretary hinted the privilege may be cut.

David Davis conceded Brits will “probably” lose access, adding: “Haven’t looked at it.”

This could have a significant impact on travel insurance providers who would have to absorb the cost of all medical treatment instead. 

But until negotiations are finalised, there is no way of knowing the future of the EHIC. 

For the short term, British citizens can travel freely through EEA countries with the help of their health cards. 

A Government spokesman said: “The rights and entitlements that will apply following the UK’s exit are subject to the wider negotiation on our future relationship with the EU.

“At every step of these negotiations we will work to ensure the best possible outcome for the people of the United Kingdom, including those travelling to and living in EU countries.”
