Enthusiasts tend to doubt the driving chops, consumers are unsure about the ability of EVs to serve the diverse needs of the American driver, and, to make kicking the fossil-fuel habit even harder, electric powertrains still command a significant premium—they can put a lightly equipped compact car on the same price tier as a loaded entry-luxury sedan. Volkswagen hasn’t solved all those problems with its newly updated—and 10Best Cars–winning—e-Golf, but it has taken several steps in the right direction. For one thing, the e-Golf looks essentially the same as a regular Golf, so it doesn’t require the social sacrifices demanded by, say, a Toyota Prius Prime. For another, it retains virtually all the dynamic prowess that makes the Golf family the Mountbatten-Windsors of the compact-car segment. The e-Golf would need a battery upgrade to compete with the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Tesla Model 3 for range, but for drivers with a small travel radius or room for more than one car in the stable, the e-Golf will serve well. 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf Drivers' Notes Review | Putting the car first https://briefnews.eu/2017-volkswagen-e-golf-drivers-notes-review-putting-the-car-first/ https://briefnews.eu/2017-volkswagen-e-golf-drivers-notes-review-putting-the-car-first/#respond Mon, 05 Mar 2018 17:51:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2017-volkswagen-e-golf-drivers-notes-review-putting-the-car-first/

The 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf feels both new and familiar at once. It looks, feels and acts like the standard Golf we’ve known and embraced for decades, but the details are different. Obviously, the Golf’s 1.8-liter turbocharged sweetheart has been replaced with a 100 kW electric motor and a 35.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. There are small blue accents both inside and out signifying the car’s green intentions. The wheels are flat 16-inch designs made to improve the car’s aerodynamics. The tachometer has been replaced by a power meter.

The core is still here. It still packs a clean cabin with excellent materials. The battery pack doesn’t take up any additional cargo room. It’s still a Golf, just a little more quiet than we’re used to.

Senior Editor, Green John Beltz Snyder: Historically, I’ve enjoyed various iterations of the Volkswagen Golf, particularly the GTI (of course) and the TDI. Every time I get in one, it feels familiar. The same was true when sitting in this e-Golf for the first time. I immediately felt like I knew the car. The controls, the handling, the layout, even the gear selector all felt natural.

Driving the e-Golf, there’s nothing much about it that screams “This is an EV!” Yeah, it’s quiet, but you don’t hear much whine from the electric motor to make it feel any different from a low-powered internal-combustion Golf. Even the charge meter looks like a normal gas gauge. This car just feels like a Golf with a low center of gravity (which was great in carrying speed on the highway on- and off-ramps).

One EV-specific feature in the e-Golf is the ability to choose levels of regenerative braking. That’s done with the gear lever, the same way you would manually choose gears — by pushing it left or right. There are only three settings from what I could tell, though. To me, it only made sense to have regen all the way on (which can also be done by pulling the lever back to “B”) or all the way off. And the highest level of regen wasn’t enough for one-pedal driving. I would like to have that option, at least.

Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale: I really like this VW e-Golf. Why? It drives like a Golf, and the Golf is good. It has the same sharp steering, lack of body roll and general eagerness in corners. It has a smooth, comfortable ride, even over metro Detroit’s pockmarked streets. It also feels pretty much as peppy as a gas-powered Golf, though I wouldn’t mind the throttle tip-in being a bit more aggressive from a stop, and it does feel less potent as speeds increase. Actually, more power would be fun, too. The chassis can certainly handle it. The e-Golf also has the option of cranking up the regenerative braking, and while it isn’t as aggressive as in a Chevy Bolt EV, it’s still quite strong and a welcome addition.

It’s just as good inside, too. It looks and feels just like a normal Golf, complete with the highly responsive and easy-to-use touchscreen infotainment. The batteries don’t seem to have encroached on the luggage area, either, so you can stuff as much stuff in this as you can a normal Golf. My only real problem with the car is that the EPA-estimated 125-mile range on a single charge, although much improved, still doesn’t compete with the Chevy Bolt (which I took on a long summer road trip) or the Tesla Model 3 and even comes in a bit below the new Nissan Leaf. And I feel that 200 miles is the mark for having a really practical, near-replacement for a daily driver.

Otherwise, I really like the e-Golf. If its range works for your commuting needs, I would say it’s absolutely the one to get. Me, I might wait for a longer-range model. And maybe one with more power. A fully-electric version of Europe’s Golf GTE plug-in? Yeah, that would be awesome.

What It Is: The battery-powered version of the Volkswagen Golf. Its late-2014 arrival was during the heyday of the TDI era, and the e-Golf occupied a wallflower position in the lineup (it was sold in just 10 states). With diesel now a dirty word at VW, the brand is suddenly all about EVs. While it has rolled out a bunch of EV concepts intended for production, the only battery-powered VW you can buy today is the e-Golf. Fittingly, Volkswagen has lavished some attention on it. For 2017, VW swapped out its 24.2-kWh battery pack in favor of one with nearly half again more energy capacity, 35.8 kWh, giving the electric VW a commensurate boost in EPA-rated range—to 125 miles from only 83 before. The 2017 e-Golf also received the modest facelift (new headlights, taillights, and slightly modified styling, along with a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen and new infotainment system) that’s making its way to the rest of the Golf lineup for 2018. 2018 VW e-Golf pricing revealed, and it comes in close to the Nissan Leaf https://briefnews.eu/2018-vw-e-golf-pricing-revealed-and-it-comes-in-close-to-the-nissan-leaf/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-vw-e-golf-pricing-revealed-and-it-comes-in-close-to-the-nissan-leaf/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2017 20:44:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-vw-e-golf-pricing-revealed-and-it-comes-in-close-to-the-nissan-leaf/

Over in Frankfurt this week, it was all about the many forms electrification will take in the near future. But in the here-and-now real world, the EV arms race is getting interesting too. Volkswagen on Thursday revealed pricing of the new, longer-range 2018 e-Golf. And it’s going to make for some interesting comparison shopping.

The new e-Golf gets a 125-mile range, as well as updated styling and an electric motor making 134 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. Battery storage is now at 35.8 kWh, up from 24.2 in the old e-Golf. VW says the new car is faster than its predecessor, too, doing 0-to-60 in 9.6 seconds.

Pricing starts at $ 31,315, including destination fees. For a deeper read on what the e-Golf is like, check out our first-drive review from back in May.

Meanwhile, the new Nissan Leaf revealed just last week offers 150 miles of range. Likewise it has updated styling inside and out. And it makes 147 horsepower and 236 pound feet of torque. The battery is 40 kWh, and in a year it will get a more-robust “e+” variant with heftier battery and greater range. The new Leaf’s pricing starts at $ 30,875.

And then there’s the Hyundai Ionic EV: 124 miles of range, 104 hp, 215 pound-feet, 28 kWh battery, ringing in at $ 30,335.

All these prices, of course, are before the $ 7,500 federal tax credit.

Another point of triangulation: The Chevy Bolt boasts a 238-mile range, makes 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque on a 60 kWh battery, can kick the butt of the e-Golf’s GTI big brother and is expected to outsell just about everything but a Tesla S. Ah, but the Bolt starts at $ 37,495 and heads up from there. And we won’t get into the Tesla Model 3, which is in “production hell,” may only have 30 working specimens so far and is $ 35,000 going on $ 46,000.

So the e-Golf is really head-to-head with the Leaf and perhaps the Ionic.

The base e-Golf is the SE, offering more standard equipment this year including an 8-inch touchscreen, LED taillights, cruise control and a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel. It has a 7.2 kW onboard charger. DC fast charging is a $ 995 option.

The e-Golf Limited Edition at $ 33,795 adds the fast charging, V-Tex leatherette seats, parking assist and later in the model year will get an accident-avoidance feature called Maneuver Braking.

The e-Golf SEL Premium at $ 36,995 offers an optional package of driver-assistance features for $ 1,395 including VW’s Digital Cockpit instruments, adaptive cruise, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert, and parking assist. Note that many of these driver-assist features will be available on even the cheapest Nissan Leaf.

A U.S. release date for the e-Golf hasn’t been announced, whereas Leaf production begins next month, and the Ionic is already in showrooms.

Volkswagen has launched the update e-Golf in showrooms across the UK with better range and more technology onboard.

The zero-emissions e-Golf has an OTR price of £32,190 which can be slashed to £27,690 with the plug-in Government car grant.

In addition to this, drivers can land another £5,500 off the car’s price under the terms of

The German manufacturer boasts between 124 real world range and 186 NEDC miles of range, an increase by 50 per cent.

An increase in energy capacity of the e-Golf’s lithium-ion battery from 24.2 kWh to 35.8 kWh has allowed the extra range.

Power has also increased by 15kW to 100 kWh (136PS) this allows the vehicle to go from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 93mph.

Torque has increased from 270Nm to 290Nm and the car is controlled, as before, by a single-speed gearbox.

The e-Golf’s battery can be recharged from empty to 80 per cent capacity in just 45 minutes when connected to a 40 kW DC rapid charger.

To fully recharge the vehicle from a wallbox will take five hours and 20 minutes.

Using the Volkswagen Car-Net smartphone app the car’s air conditioning can be started or stopped and set times for the car to stop and start charging and reveals the location of the car while it is parked.

Inside the car is VW’s Discover Navigation Pro infotainment system with Gesture control which is controlled by 9.2-inch colour touchscreen.

An optional Active Info Display can replace the traditional instrument panel with a 12.3-inch high-resolution TFT screen.

All Golfs include Front Assist, which is a safety system that uses a radar sensor to warn the driver of an imminent collision.

The system will brake the car automatically if the driver does not react in time.

An extension of this is City Emergency Braking, which detects pedestrians moving across the vehicle’s path.

Volkswagen’s e-Golf has traditionally been built in Wolfsburg in Germany. It is now being produced in Dresden, too, at Volkswagen’s futuristic ‘Transparent Factory’.

Some car companies were dragged kicking and screaming into the electric-vehicle market by the 10-state zero-emission-vehicle (ZEV) mandate, hastily shoving electric motors and batteries into existing products with only the most minor changes. Volkswagen, however, seems to be warming to the presumably still unprofitable task of selling EVs, bringing out a refreshed e-Golf only two years after launching an 83-mile-range model that nonetheless managed to sell nearly 4000 copies in the U.S. last year. This electric Volkswagen Thing is more fun than a new e-Golf https://briefnews.eu/this-electric-volkswagen-thing-is-more-fun-than-a-new-e-golf/ https://briefnews.eu/this-electric-volkswagen-thing-is-more-fun-than-a-new-e-golf/#respond Wed, 10 May 2017 21:54:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-electric-volkswagen-thing-is-more-fun-than-a-new-e-golf/

Icon, the California shop behind vehicles like this Toyota FJ44 and first generation Ford Broncos, has been expanding its reach in the past few years. Moving past its off-roading roots has allowed the company to customize all sorts of vehicles, from a 1967 Volkswagen Type 2 to a mid-1990s police-spec Chevrolet Caprice. With this 1973 Volkswagen Thing, Icon has made another step forward into the world of electric vehicles.

This new model is part of Icon’s Derelict series that is meant to combine classic and often unrestored style with modern mechanical components. In that vein, the yellow paint on this Thing (Type 181 if we’re getting specific) is untouched and all original. From a distance, it looks like nothing more than a particularly well-maintained Volkswagen. As Icon founder Jonathan Ward explains in the video, the real details require a keen eye.

The biggest difference between a standard Thing and Icon’s creation is the ditching of the anemic Volkswagen flat-four in exchange for an electric powertrain. Icon worked with Zelectric, Stealth EV, and AM Racing, the latter for the electric motor. Total output is 180 horsepower and either 180 or 210 lb-ft of torque (Ward says 180 in the video, but the description lists 210). That’s nearly four times the power of the VW’s original engine.

The entire drive unit is wonderfully displayed in the Thing’s rear. As with other Icon projects, a lot of thought was put into presentation as well as driving dynamics. Unfortunately, the 40 kWh battery pack takes up most of the frunk, leaving little room for any luggage. The intakes on the rear fenders are still used to keep the motor and battery cool.

Other mechanical upgrades include Wilwood disc brakes, fully adjustable coilover suspension, and the addition of swaybars. There is a custom digital gauge cluster in place of the old analog unit, showing all relevant EV information. An upgraded sound system (anything would be an upgrade over stock) places bluetooth speakers at the car’s corners.

A refreshed top, new door uppers, a Line-X floor, and miles of weatherstripping were added to cut down on noise and rattles. As Ward says, the car always rattled, but the quiet electric motor makes it far more noticeable.

Watch the video for a full breakdown from Ward as well as a few shots of the new Thing doing donuts.
