The tactics used by Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis to relocate 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard last week resemble tactics used by southern segregationists during the 1960s "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported. 

In a tweet, Representatives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library also recounted the 1960s segregationalist effort. 

"To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens' Councils started their so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides," giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives," the library said. 

On Wednesday, 50 migrants arrived in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts without any warning. DeSantis claimed responsibility for the two flights. The migrants were flown from Texas to Martha's Vineyard as part of an effort by Republican governors to protest the Biden administration's immigration policies. 

DeSantis was following in the footsteps of several other GOP governors who in recent weeks have been sending migrants to liberal cities. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has bused about 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City, in protest of  Biden's immigration policies. 

NPR reported that the migrants thought they were headed to Boston for jobs. Three migrants told the outlets that a woman identified as "Perla" promised them expedited work permits in Boston.

"She (Perla) offered us help. Help that never arrived," one migrant, named by the outlet as Andres, told NPR. "Now we are here. We got on the plane with a vision of the future, of making it."

 

 

In 1962, the segregationist group called the White Citizens' Council falsely promised hundreds of Black Americans housing and jobs before sending them to cities like New York and Philadelphia in an effort called the "Reverse Freedom Rides," CNN reported.

"Reverse Freedom Rides are not well known among many people, and it's important to understand that this tactic of using people as political pawns was used 60 years ago by segregationists and White supremacists," Tanisha Sullivan, president of the NAACP Boston branch told CNN. 

"It's important for us to amplify and highlight that parallel, so people can see that this type of racist behavior and these racist tactics are still being used today," she added.

  • Texas has bused thousands of migrants to east coast cities over the past few months. 
  • A contractor busing the migrants has been banned from speaking with New York City officials, the AP reported. 
  • The lack of communication complicates non-profit groups efforts to meet and help those arriving. 

A contractor hired by Texas to bus migrants signed an agreement that bans them from talking to New York officials, the Associated Press reported. 

Manuel Castro, commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, told the AP that complicates efforts to meet and provide resources for migrants being sent from Texas. 

"It's a problem because we don't know when the buses are coming, how many buses are coming, if anyone on these buses has medical conditions that they will need help with, if they need a wheelchair,"Castro told the outlet. "We at least want to know that so that we can best help people as they arrive."

Volunteer groups rely in tips for help as they wait for hours in New York's Port Authority for buses from Texas to arrive.  

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been sending buses of migrants to democratic cities like Washington D.C. and New York to President Joe Biden's immigration policies. 

Following in Abbott's footsteps, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took responsibility for flying 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard this week. 

The AP reported that so far about 8,000 migrants were bused from Texas to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 were bused to New York City. 

While some migrants told the AP they were grateful for the help they received to reach East Coast cities, the New York Times reported that the influx has meant that the volunteer and non-profit groups helping these migrants have been overwhelmed, and many migrants are ending up in homeless shelters.

In a statement to the AP, Abbott's office dismissed criticism of the lack of communication. 

"Instead of complaining about fulfilling their sanctuary city promises, these Democrat hypocrites should call on President Biden to do his job and secure the border — something the president continues failing to do," spokeswoman Renae Eze said Thursday.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki defended her company’s efforts to keep violent content off the video platform at the sixth annual Lesbians Who Tech Summit Friday in San Francisco. Wojcicki was interviewed by New York Timescolumnist Kara Swisher, who took the YouTube leader to task for the platform’s failure to keep dangerous content away from kids. Last week reports emerged that scenes describing how to commit suicide were spliced into YouTube videos aimed at children, only the latest example in a long list of troublesome content plaguing the platform.

“We take kids’ safety incredibly seriously, and I would say that the last two years have really been focused on the responsibility of our platforms,” Wojcicki said. “I’m a mom, I have five kids from 4 to 19,” she explained to the crowd filling the Castro Theatre, one of San Francisco’s oldest movie houses. “I understand kids, and as a parent I really want to do the right thing.”

Following the latest controversy, YouTube again changed its policies regarding content that features children, eliminating comments on videos featuring young minors, or older minors engaged in risky behavior. She said some creators may be upset that their videos won’t be the subject of comments. “This change takes away that ability from people who are innocent,” she said. “But this is a decision we made because we want to prioritize children’s safety.” Earlier this year, YouTube said it would change its algorithm to recommend less content that might be harmful.

About 500 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. In the third quarter of 2018, the company removed nearly 8 million videos with problematic content from the site, 75 percent of which were identified by machine-learning systems, Wojcicki said. Most of those videos didn’t have a single view. (A report covering the fourth quarter is due soon, she said.)

During Friday’s conference, Swisher lamented that her teenage son was able to land on neo-Nazi propaganda after a few clicks on YouTube: “I said, ‘I’m going to kill Susan Wojcicki.’ It feels like all of you tech companies built these beautiful cities, but you decided to not put in police, fire, garbage …” Do tech companies have a sense of the impact they’re having, Swisher asked, and do they need regulation to deal with it? “We use the analogy of a city too,” Wojcicki said. She said some of the problems of YouTube and other platforms stemmed from their rapid growth. “We were this smaller city, and everybody knew each other on the internet, and very quickly we grew to this major metropolitan city,” she said. “Google has committed to having 10,000 people dealing with controversial content. We have already made a huge difference, and we will continue.”

Following the conference’s focus on inclusion—80 percent of Lesbians Who Tech speakers are queer women, 50 percent are women of color, 15 percent are transgender or gender nonconforming—Swisher also grilled Wojcicki about her company’s diversity efforts. Wojcicki mentioned a 2017 story she’d written for Vanity Fair called “How to Break Up the Silicon Valley Boys’ Club.” “The first point I made was that it has to come from the CEO level,” Wojcicki said. “The CEO has to make it a priority; they have to say, I’m going to meet with the underrepresented groups, I’m going to focus on having a diverse management team.”

When she joined YouTube in 2014, Wojcicki said, the company’s management team was 15 percent women; today, it’s 30 percent women. “I’ve been really focused on diversity at YouTube and on bringing more leaders and women and people of color and underrepresented minorities.”

Last fall Google employees staged a walkout in response, in part, to a New York Times report that the company paid Android creator Andy Rubin $90 million to exit the company following accusations of sexual misconduct. Following the protest, Google eliminated a requirement for binding arbitration in cases of harassment and discrimination claims, pledged to end pay inequity, and pledged to revamp the process employees use to report sexual misconduct. “I don’t want to say that everything is solved, but there were a lot of changes that were made quickly,” Wojcicki said.

As part of the protest, employees demanded that Google appoint an employee to its board. Pressed by Swisher, Wojcicki, who does not sit on the board of Google parent Alphabet but does serve on Salesforce’s board, wouldn’t say whether she supports this move, which Google has declined to make.

Lesbians Who Tech calls itself the largest LGBTQ professional in the event in the world; the organization holds conferences in San Francisco and New York, with smaller gatherings in 40 cities globally. About 6,000 people attended the weekend gathering in San Francisco. In addition to Wojcicki, speakers on Friday included US senator Tammy Baldwin (D–Wisconsin), San Francisco mayor London Breed, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate and rising Democratic Party star Stacey Abrams, and Emerson Collective founder Laurene Powell Jobs. The event also featured sessions on scaling venture-backed companies, cybersecurity best practices, building serverless applications, and imposter syndrome. The group offers a coding and scholarship fund named for Edie Windsor, the late IBM computer programmer whose efforts to force the US government to recognize her same-sex marriage led to a landmark 2013 Supreme Court case that legalized gay marriage nationally.

Unfortunately, Telltale’s effective closure wasn’t the end of tough times for the game industry. H1Z1 and EverQuest developer Daybreak Game Company has confirmed that it’s laying off staff as it’s “optimizing [its] structure” for the future. The company didn’t say how many people were losing their jobs, but former Daybreak president John Smedley had briefly claimed on Twitter (since absent) that the cuts affected as many as 70 people. There hasn’t been confirmation of this number, and he has since deleted the tweet.

The company rejected assertions that most of the layoffs affected its Austin office, noting that the Texas location was “not closing.”

While there’s no deeper official explanation for the move, Daybreak is in a difficult position. H1Z1 has a sizeable audience (there were 10 million players in the beta a month after launch), but it’s still facing stiff competition from battle royale heavyweights like Fortnite and PUBG. Likewise, massively multiplayer role-playing games like DC Universe Online and the EverQuest series are generally considered past their primes. Combine this with previous layoffs in April and it appears that the company is determined to trim costs while it figures out its next moves.

Michael Fortier, former Conservative minister of international trade, and Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of Montreal's Chamber of Commerce, are speaking to reporters.

Fortier said that while NBA commissioner Adam Silver told his group the league has no plans to expand, he's confident it will happen in the future.

Fortier also said that Stéphan Crétier, president and chief executive officer of GardaWorld, would buy a 10 per cent stake in any future franchise. 

The announcement comes the same day the Toronto Raptors play a pre-season game against the Brooklyn Nets at Montreal's Bell Centre at 7 p.m. ET.

The game will feature Montreal's Chris Boucher, who is attempting to make the Raptors' regular-season roster.

Boucher said he'll have over 100 friends and family members at the game.

AUSTIN, Texas—On the surface, everything appears to be normal at Defense Distributed, the firearms company founded by 3D printed guns activist Cody Wilson. Employees have been reporting to work as usual. Sales of the Ghost Gunner and the related 3D-printed gun files on a USB stick continue. And the Defense Distributed team has been working to fulfill those just like any other week.

But of course, it hasn’t been just any other week for the Austin company. On Wednesday, September 19, an arrest warrant was issued for Wilson related to his alleged sexual assault of an unnamed underage girl. And on Friday, September 21, Wilson was arrested in Taipei, Taiwan. He flew to the country roughly two weeks earlier, and the Austin Police Department said that Wilson had skipped his return flight to the US after they believe the man received a tip about the allegations.

So while business at Defense Distributed rolls along at the moment, the company founder likely faces criminal charges upon returning to his home city. And that means Wilson could be effectively out at Defense Distributed.
