While speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was asked a question that comes up all the time — will Twitter ever roll out an edit feature? Dorsey has acknowledged the possibility of such a function in the past, and like before, his recent comments on the topic noted that while the company has been considering an edit function, it would want to be sure it was implemented in the right way.
“When we hear about the edit button, you have to pay attention not to what people are asking you for but the use cases,” Dorsey said. “What’s the question behind the question? And a lot of people want edit because they make mistakes on Twitter and they want to quickly fix them. They don’t want to look bad.” Dorsey used the examples of tweeting the wrong URL or including a typo. “So that’s a lot more achievable than allowing people to edit any tweet all the way back in time,” he said.
Dorsey’s comments make it sound like Twitter is open to an edit feature that would let users quickly correct a mistake. But more substantial edits, like ones that change the meaning of a tweet, appear to be what has kept the company from introducing an edit function so far. As an example, Dorsey presented a situation where one person tweets something that’s then retweeted by those that agree with the statement, but the original tweeter then edits their tweet to the point where those who’ve retweeted the post no longer agree with it. “And that’s what we need to prevent,” said Dorsey.
As for potential solutions to that problem, Dorsey mentioned change logs that would display how a tweet has been changed. “But ultimately we need to make sure we’re solving a real problem,” he said. “We’ve been considering edit for quite some time, but we have to do it the right way. We can’t just rush it out, and we have to make sure that we’re actually solving the predominant reason why people would do it, first and foremost. And then not making something that’s distracting or takes away from the public record in doing so, because I think it’s really critical that we preserve that.”
Like other social networks, Twitter has had a problem with manipulative content and hoaxes. Last month, it tweaked its reporting process so that users can specify when they’re reporting fake accounts and malicious links.

Last night at Adobe Max’s Sneaks session, a showcase unveiling potential software features, comedian Tiffany Haddish and Adobe evangelist Paul Trani announced ten new tools that the company is exploring. The sneaks run the gamut from fun voice-to-music features to impressively useful tools like Smooth Operator, an intelligent vertical video cropping tool.
Sneaks could end up as part of an application within the Adobe Creative Cloud, or they could stand alone — or Adobe may not choose to move forward with them at all. There are some pretty interesting applications in this year’s sneaks, however, and some of could have very cool implications for photo and video editors.
So, about that voice-to-music tool, it’s called Project Kazoo, and it turns your voice into an instrument. The practical application is that you can sing to your computer and easily create your own soundtracks with just your voice — and a very helpful assist from Adobe’s AI-enable Sensei technology.
Another highlight is Project Fast Mask, which should delight video editors for sure. Fast Mask allows you to select an entire object (a person, for example) with just a few clicks. The feature then works across multiple frames of the video, meaning you select the object once and can edit the rest of the video around it. Project Fast Mask also uses Adobe Sensei to reduce a very time-consuming process to just a few clicks.
Got complex vector graphics you want to edit? Project Good Bones may be just the ticket for you. After selecting a full graphic, Project Good Bones creates a skeleton and “handles” for the graphic which you can manipulate however you want. Similar to Project Fast Mask, Good Bones takes a once arduous process and replaces it with to a simple, easy-to-use function. It’s pretty powerful, time-saving technology that could be a real benefit for designers and artists down the line.

Many photo editing apps have an auto-adjust feature that can improve photos, but pros tend to steer clear of it for a reason — it’s more of a vague guess than an informed edit based on experience. Wouldn’t it be nice if it learned from the pros? It does now. Adobe has released updates to Lightroom (both CC and Classic) and Camera Raw that use its Sensei AI to improve photos based on examples. The new Auto mode compares your image to “tens of thousands” of professionally edited shots and uses that wealth of info to make smarter decisions. This doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have Ansel Adams-grade photos with a couple of clicks, but it could limit your editing to minor tweaks. It’s definitely a help for newcomers who want pro-quality shots but don’t yet know how to achieve those effects themselves.
The revamped Auto is available across all platforms, including the desktop, mobile apps and the web.
There are some other helpful upgrades, particularly on the desktop. Computer users now have considerably better tone control, including Tone Curve (to fine-tune the tonality and contrast) and Split Toning (to achieve artistic effects, such as sepia). You can also view photos full-screen and edit the capture time of a photo if your camera is off. Mobile users should see a few tweaks as well. Android gives you shortcuts to specific app modes on Nougat or later, while the iOS camp can automatically add a text watermark upon export and should see improved HDR capture. All told, you likely want this update regardless of how familiar you are with photo editing.

According to a user on Reddit, the captioning throws up some interesting possibilities in terms of who exactly Snoke and Luke Skywalker are talking to at key moments.
SleepingAran wrote: “I’ve noticed the moment when Snoke says ‘When I found you’, the subtitle uses the feminine ‘you’ which is ‘妳’ as oppose to the gender neutral ‘you’ which is ‘你’.
“The former is the combination the word ‘女’, which means female and ‘尔’ which means you; while the latter is gender neutral that can be used to indicates female and male, but mainly used for male.
“This means that when Snoke says ‘When I found you’, Snoke is talking to a female character, which in my opinion is most likely Rey at this point.”
It was assumed, given the editing of the clip, that he was talking to Kylo Ren – but does this prove Rey is the subject of his rousing speech?
The poster continued: “After that, near the end of the trailer, when Snoke says ‘Fulfill your destiny’, the ‘you’ the subtitle wrote is now ‘你’, which means that Snoke talking to a male character now.
“So at this point, Snoke is not probably referring to Kylo or other male characters.”
There’s more – when Luke Skywalker says “This is not going to end the way you think”, it was previously thought he was talking to Rey. Indeed, Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh had a whole theory suggesting Rey had a physical altercation with him in the lead-up to that moment.
But is it now the case that he’s not talking to her at all?
SleepingAran added: “The ‘you’ again is written ‘你’, which means the Luke is talking to a male character.
“At this point, Luke is probably not talking to Rey, but someone else.”
Impressive findings – but, as ever, we’ll have to wait a couple more months for definitive answers.
Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi is out on December 14 in the UK.
Josiah Zayner, CEO of the biohacking-promoting startup the Odin, held up a syringe. “This will modify my muscle genes to give me bigger muscles,” he told a packed room at a biotech conference in San Francisco in early October.
In front of dozens of onlookers, he leaned against a table and jabbed the long needle into his left forearm. Then he took it out, wincing a little, and added, over applause and chuckles of disbelief, “I’ll let you know how it works out.”
Zayner has made headlines for pushing the boundaries of do-it-yourself genetic experimentation, whether by trying to clean up his gut by inoculating himself with a friend’s poop or brewing glow-in-the-dark beer. This time, the biohacker claims he’s the first person trying to modify his own genome with the groundbreaking gene-editing technology known as CRISPR. And he’s providing the world with the means to do it, too, by posting a “DIY Human CRISPR Guide” online and selling $ 20 DNA that promotes muscle growth.
But editing your DNA isn’t as simple as following step-by-step advice. Scientists say that injecting yourself with a gene for muscle growth, as Zayner’s done, won’t in fact pump up your arms. Zayner himself admits that his experiments over the last year haven’t visibly changed his body. There are safety risks, too, experts say: People could infect themselves, or induce an inflammatory reaction.
But to Zayner, whether or not the experiment actually works is besides the point. What he’s trying to demonstrate, Zayner told BuzzFeed News, is that cutting-edge biology tools like CRISPR should be available to people to do as they wish, and not be controlled by academics and pharmaceutical companies.
“I want to live in a world where people get drunk and instead of giving themselves tattoos, they’re like, ‘I’m drunk, I’m going to CRISPR myself.’”
“I want to live in a world where people get drunk and instead of giving themselves tattoos, they’re like, ‘I’m drunk, I’m going to CRISPR myself,’” said Zayner, who has a few tattoos of his own, in an interview with BuzzFeed News. “It sounds crazy, but I think that would be a pretty interesting world to live in for sure.”
Under the Food and Drug Administration’s rules, his experimenting appears to be legal — or at least, not illegal. But it’s less clear to what extent, if any, Zayner is responsible for any harm to people who copy him. It’s a gray area that the FDA doesn’t regulate, and may become more pressing as amateur scientists disseminate their experiments, methods, and equipment online.
“Even if you are not liable by legal terms, how responsible are you?” said Eleonore Pauwels, a researcher who specializes in genomics and artificial intelligence at Woodrow Wilson Center, a think tank. “How do you define that in today’s bioengineering and democratized technology setting?”
Zayner’s experiment comes at a time when gene therapies — treatments that alter a patient’s genes to treat or prevent disease — are starting to make their way into mainstream health care. In August, the FDA approved a first-of-its-kind leukemia treatment that involves taking the cancer patient’s own immune cells, genetically engineering them, and putting them back in the patient’s body to strengthen their response against cancer. Another therapy that could be approved early next year would, with just one injection, replace a faulty gene and cure a rare, inherited eye disease.
Josiah Zayner live-streamed his DNA injection at a recent biotech conference.
Some individuals aren’t waiting for Big Pharma. In 2015, Liz Parrish, CEO of a biotech startup called BioViva, told the MIT Technology Review that in Latin America, she had received a highly experimental anti-aging gene therapy. Earlier this year, Brian Hanley, CEO of Butterfly Sciences, also told the Review that he had received DNA interjections meant to stall aging.
While there are lots of different gene-editing techniques in use, according to Pauwels, Zayner may be the first self-practitioner to use CRISPR, the swift and precise technology that has transformed biology in the last few years.
Zayner, who has a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Chicago, told BuzzFeed News that he started self-experimenting with CRISPR in his garage last summer. In one case, he injected the gene for green fluorescence, also known as the gene that makes jellyfish light up. He didn’t start glowing, but he sent a chunk of his skin to a biotech company for analysis, and it confirmed that the gene had taken hold in his cells.
“There are aspects of what he’s doing that people need to be really, really careful about.”
The Odin, Zayner’s startup, just started selling a molecule that disables a gene that inhibits muscle growth, so the end result — or at least the intended one — is bigger muscles. This kind of material is already available through other companies that sell DNA supplies. (Within the last two weeks, Zayner says he’s sold about 10.)
But Dana Carroll, a biochemist and CRISPR expert at the University of Utah, said the experiment is unlikely to work as Zayner suggests, pointing out that the gene is most influential when muscles are being developed early in life.
“When your muscles are already developed and you’re sitting there with mature muscles, there’s not a lot you can do to make them bigger and stronger other than exercise,” he told BuzzFeed News. “So he’d be better off exercising than injecting himself.”
Carroll isn’t too worried that people who follow Zayner’s instructions and use his materials will seriously hurt themselves. “I don’t think a great deal of harm can be done,” he said. “To do real, effective genome-editing, it’s going to require a more sophisticated laboratory and more sophisticated materials than the ones he’s providing,”
But he noted that people injecting themselves at non-sterile environments at home might open themselves up to infection. Repeated injections might cause the body to have an inflammatory reaction. And it could be dangerous if they tried to alter a gene for something other than muscle growth.
“There are aspects of what he’s doing that people need to be really, really careful about,” Carroll said.
Josiah Zayner injects himself with DNA in his garage last year.
Asked for comment on Zayner’s project, an FDA spokesperson said that in general, if a scientist wants to test an unapproved drug in humans, they must notify the FDA beforehand.
Pauwels says that a scientist is required to get approval to conduct research on humans — but not when the research subject is themselves, as in Zayner’s case. “That is a blind spot in regulation,” she said.
Zayner is known for testing the FDA’s limits in the past. Last December, BuzzFeed News reported that, in response to the agency’s scrutiny, the Odin toned down its marketing of a DNA kit that it originally said was a tool for making glow-in-the-dark alcohol.
This time, Zayner has carefully tried to steer clear of the agency’s ire. The DNA for muscle growth is sold with a disclaimer: “It is not injectable and not meant for human use.” Still, chances are that curious customers are likely to follow Zayner’s example and inject it into themselves to see what will happen.
Zayner also says his “DIY Human CRISPR Guide” is free speech. He isn’t trying to cure a disease, nor telling others how to cure themselves.
Pauwels said that Zayner is toeing the line. “As soon as you don’t make any health claims and don’t assess risks and benefits, you are in that gray zone where you are using your First Amendment rights, you’re just communicating,” she said. “That could be an issue that comes under the FDA at some point. We might see more and more phenomena of that kind.”
Zayner says he hasn’t gotten sick from the experiments, and he isn’t worried about it. Is do-it-yourself CRISPR really more harmful, he asks, than smoking, sunbathing, and taking chemotherapy, all of which are legal and socially acceptable activities that damage your genes?
“We should be able to do whatever we want,” he said. “There are a lot of things we do that occur during the normal day that do a lot more damage, probably, than things like CRISPR.”

It’s a strange age when one person can retweet their way to a lifetime of free Wendy’s nuggets, but some social media messages just can’t be amplified into making change. Especially when they’re fake. In case there was any doubt, Twitter has confirmed that the supposed screenshot promising an ‘edit tweet’ function if a message gets 450,000 retweets isn’t legitimate.
“As a number of the replies to the Tweet suggest, this is fake,” a Twitter spokesperson told Engadget over email. The tweet in question screencaps a purported response from Twitter’s Support account saying that 450,000 retweets will get the ball rolling on the editing feature. You’d think the mischievous user would aim a little higher — the free nugget dream needed over 3.4 million retweets to become reality.

A rough edit of the next movie, which is still in post-production, was the subject of speculation on Reddit and in various Star Wars fan forums.
It was suggested that someone had obtained the full version of the movie and had given Disney multiple deadlines with which to meet a ransom demand.
A user of a forum on Star Wars News Net claimed the leakers had sold the edit to someone for bitcoins [digital currency], with plans to release it publicly weeks before the movie is due to be released in cinemas.
However, the whole rumour seems now to have been debunked.
Although for many fans the entire speculation is based off hearsay across Reddit and forums, one grab now reads: “I’ve consulted with a huge Star Wars fan and they’ve confirmed the ‘proof’ to be fake. All from the Force Awakens [previous movie].”
Express.co.uk has reached out to publicists from Disney for comment on the whole debacle.
If the film were to emerge online prior to release, it would be nothing short of a disaster for the company.
So much of the build-up campaign is under tight control that various elements of the movie aren’t even confirmed just yet – including the names of characters played by Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern.
In fact, a brief teaser trailer – released in April – is almost all fans have to treat as concrete and official at this point, aside from the odd throwaway tease from the likes of Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran.
The Last Jedi is the penultimate chapter of the current trilogy, with Episode IX to follow in May 2019.
Star Wars Episode VIII is out on December 15.
Google today announced an update to its Gboard virtual keyboard app for Android that will make it easier to edit and enter text. The feature first became available to the app’s beta users, and now it’s rolling out to everyone.
You can get to the new feature by tapping on the G button or the arrow in the keyboard’s top right corner and then hitting the new icon for text editing — a cursor with arrows pointing left and right — in the suggestions area, Google product manager Linda Lin wrote in a blog post.
From there, you’ll see some big buttons pop up. There are arrow keys pointing up, down, left, and right; a select button in the middle, keys to go to the beginning or end of your text block; buttons for cutting, copying, and pasting; and, of course, backspace. If you hit select and then move around with the arrow keys, you can select exactly the characters you want, and from there you can cut, copy, or paste. Because the buttons are so big, for some people this system will be easier than delicately dragging the pointers to select text.
The feature is not yet available on Gboard for iOS.
Google is pushing out this feature after beginning tests of a new Copyless Paste feature in Chrome for Android, which will let users more easily enter text into other apps based on usage.
Gboard has 500 million to 1 billion app installs on Android, and that popularity has to do with the fact that the standard-issue Google Keyboard for Android was folded into Gboard a few months ago. That followed the introduction of Gboard as a separate app for Android. But when Gboard first came out, it was only on iOS, despite that Android is of course Google’s own mobile operating system.
Other keyboard apps that let you type by gliding like Gboard include SwiftKey and Fleksy.
