LATEST UPDATE: Wednesday 4 April 2018, 8:15am It has been said the palace is “relaxed” on the day of Prince Philip’s hip operation, despite the Duke of Edinburgh’s age. “The Palace is relaxed with us this morning. They said it’s not an emergency procedure, it’s pre-planned.”, reporter Jonathan Swain said on Good Morning Britain. Wednesday 4 April 2018, 7:13am There are certain conditions upon which the Duke of Edinburgh will be able to attend the royal wedding, it has been said. The Queen’s consort and husband has sought medical advice for a hip problem, after it got it the way of one of his favourite pursuits: carriage driving. He is currently being treated in King Edward VII Hospital in London. “Confronted by the possibility that an untreated hip complaint could prevent him participating in his beloved sport of carriage driving, he has accepted medical advice,” Richard Kay wrote on MailOnline. However, it is said that if Prince Philip is in a condition to attend the Windsor Horse show on May 9, he will most likely be fit to attend the wedding 10 days later. “It means, hopefully, he will be fit enough not just to take part in the Royal Windsor Horse show on May 9, but, crucially, to be an active participant at Prince Harry’s wedding ten days later,” said Kay. It has also been said the Duke will require “convalescence” in order to get better and be fit to attend the wedding next month. Prince Philip is said to be a fan of Meghan, and it is known he shares a close family bond with his grandson Prince Harry. A friend of the Duke of Edinburgh told Express.co.uk: For him it is a simple choice. “If without the procedure it means he cannot continue carriage-driving then it is worth undergoing the operation. “He will only stop when he no longer enjoys it, not because he can’t do it. “Above all he wants to remain active.” As for the royal wedding, the insider source added: “With convalescence he hopes to be there.” Last week, a royal insider gave an update on Prince Philip’s health, in an update exclusive to Express.co.uk. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, retired from public duty in May last year, and at the time there was no suggestion it was for medical reasons. Now it has been revealed that few among the palace staff anticipated the announcement, because the Duke is in “good health”. The insider added that the announcement was unexpected: “Who knew the Duke was going to scale back last year?” The source stressed that the Duke’s decision was not for medical reasons: “There’s nothing wrong with his health. He’s in good health. They claimed the real reason for his retirement was ”because he wants to spend more time at Windsor and Sandringham.” Edinburgh’s Eden Locke is a hidden treasure in a city already full to bursting with gems. Four million people visit Edinburgh every year, but not all of them discover its west side
Four million people flock to Edinburgh every year, and if you’ve ever wandered along the Royal Mile in peak tourist season you might feel as though they visit all at once.
But there is another, altogether more relaxing way to sample Scotland’s Capital, and it lies to the west.
Express readers are familiar with the tortuous tale of the city’s tram project and the sorry stories of businesses struggling to remind passers-by they were still there behind all the construction work.
Now that the trams are an established part of Edinburgh’s scenery, the people who live and work in this part of town are tackling a fresh challenge – how to stop those passers-by simply, well, passing them by.
Many visitors to the city will shuttle straight from the airport to the famous central thoroughfares, but they’re really missing a trick.
Jump off the tram a few stops earlier and you might find yourself never quite making it to the castle.
We did just that and landed in the Haymarket Hub, a brand new addition to the Edinburgh Collection that boasts of being Scotland’s first smartphone hotel. That means there’s a handset in every room packed with maps, local information and free calls and internet access that guests can take with them to guide them round the city.
Smartphone in hand, we made for William Street, a cute cobbled corner of the city a few minutes’ walk from the hotel, to browse the boutiques and galleries and start thinking about where we might eat.

Jump on a tram and visit Edinburgh’s hidden gems in the west
There’s a welcoming atmosphere that encourages visitors to linger, and that will take a festive turn with a series of live street shows by a gospel choir and big band beginning later this month.
Planning to work up an appetite with a stroll, we pointed the smartphone at www.edinburgh-westend.co.ukand loaded up a sound tour of the area.
There are three tours available here, easy to play on any smartphone and accompanied by maps.
They’re the work of a group of sound design students from the city’s College of Art, and are packed with a mixture of historical nuggets and handy tips – you’ll learn about Sherlock Holmes’ connection to these streets, the pioneering medical work of Elsie Inglis, and where to get the best ice-cream in the city.

If exploration is up your street, don’t miss dinner at The Voyage of Buck.
This is the West End ‘home’ of celebrated world traveller William ‘Buck’ Clarence, whose elaborate back story gives Holmes a run for his money as the neighbourhood’s most intriguing fictional character.
This charming conceit translates into a trendy take on Edwardian-style decor, a cocktail list chronicling Buck’s adventures from Havana to Taipei, and an eclectic menu that caters for the four corners of the world.
The food is varied in style but uniformly excellent and the cocktail pairings for mains and desserts are inspired – share a Midnight in Paris, savour a Compay Segundo with dessert, or be brave and sample the spicy Yellow Pepper Sour.

The morning after an evening in Buck’s company a bracing stroll is de rigueur, but only with the promise of breakfast at the end of it.
The Huxley, on the ground floor of the Rutland Hotel, right on the edge of Princes Street, offers all you could want.
As we tucked in to smashed avocado and poached egg on sourdough and excellent homemade pancakes, we planned a wander round the nearby city centre’s more familiar haunts.
But there were just too many intriguing little places we’d passed on the way that we really had to look into.
So, coffee pot drained, we gathered our things and struck out west again.
Robbie Travers, a third-year-law student at Edinburgh University, is being investigated after an official who carried out the preliminary investigation claimed he had committed a “hate crime.” No criminal investigation, however, has been opened by the police.
Travers posted the allegedly-racist material on Facebook in the aftermath of the US Air Force bombing an IS stronghold in Afghanistan back in April.
“Excellent news that the US administration and Trump ordered an accurate strike on an IS network of tunnels in Afghanistan.
“I’m glad we could bring these barbarians a step closer to collecting their 72 virgins,” Travers wrote.
Although he acknowledged that his comments were highly opinionated, Travers denied they were of a racist nature.
“I am deeply worried that I am being investigated for comments which are expressions of opinion in a jovial way . . . I do not incite the harassment or racist treatment, nor attack anyone with an illegal suggestion or suggest, indeed, that they be deprived of their human rights,” he said, according to the Times.
The investigation was prompted by a complaint filed by second-year history student Esme Allman, who said Travers’ comments amounted to “blatant Islamophobia.”
Allman filed a complaint saying, “Not only do I believe this behaviour to be in breach of the student code of conduct, but his decision to target the BME Liberation Group at the University of Edinburgh, and how he has chosen to do so, puts minority students at risk and in a state of panic and fear while attending the University of Edinburgh.”
However according to the Times, Travers said the complaint came in retaliation to him highlighting that Allman, who is also the former black and ethnic minority convener of the university’s Students’ Association, had said all black men are “trash.”
Allman identifies herself online as “a self-proclaimed feminist” seeking to create an all-inclusive community.
“I value inclusivity as well as building and preserving safe spaces for us. Creating a truly intersectional campaign is incredibly important to me and my first job will be to work alongside the other liberation groups to ensure EUSA are fully representative of our views.”
A university spokesman confirmed that “complaints alleging misconduct have been received against Mr. Travers and these are being investigated.
“We are committed to providing an environment in which all members of the university community treat each other with dignity and respect and our code of student conduct sets out clear expectations of behaviour,” the Times quoted him as saying.

LastMinute.com has revealed the top three places to visit in September
Summer holidays might be winding down but that doesn’t mean treating yourself to a break away needs to end completely.
September can often be one of the nicest months for sunshine across Europe – and with hundreds of cities all vying for tourist attention it can be a tough decision.
Whether you want to stay in the UK or head a little further afield, Reigo Eljas, Country Director for lastminute.com, has decided the top three places to go next month.
Edinburgh, Rome and Paris – where to stay, eat and visit revealed by an expert who truly knows his stuff!

Edinburgh Castle dominates the landscape
Edinburgh
The Scottish capital is brilliant to visit any time, but in September it’s just that bit more relaxed – with the frenetic festival period finishing in August. Good news for you, as you’ll be able to book the best restaurants, find a spot in a historic (and probably haunted) pub and not face large queues to visit the hundreds of attractions and landmarks in the city.
But it’s Edinburgh, where you can famously experience four seasons in one, so it’s a good job there’s loads to do indoors and outdoors – whatever the weather throws at you.
What to eat
Irn Bru available in pubs, warm Scotch pies, haggis on the breakfast menu and tablet (Scottish fudge) to give you the energy to climb the Royal Mile. And with whisky tasting and Edinburgh Rock (everyone’s favourite souvenir) too, Scotland has its own distinctive food and drink to try.
If you’re there at the weekend, head to Edinburgh’s Farmer’s Market (every Saturday) for the best local produce around. Behind Princes Street is Rose Street and George Street where you’ll discover some great bars and restaurants – many with outdoor seating.
The Grassmarket is a good place to begin any evening out, with bags of historic pubs to hole up in and a great live music scene. The Sheep Heid Inn is heralded as the oldest pub in Scotland, while fans of Inspector Rebus will be heading straight to the Oxford Bar.
What to see and do
First-timers have to start with Edinburgh Castle. It dominates the landscape and it’s worth walking around the small city centre to see if from every different angle. The Queen, however, stays at the Palace of Holyroodhouse when on holiday in the city. Much photographed, Edinburgh’s Folly (The National Monument is its offical title) is the rather random and unfinished ‘classical greek’ column on Calton Hill – which also boasts panoramic views of the city.
Our best recommendation – take a tour, actually – take more than one. Edinburgh Bus Tours are great and have a handy comparison tool, which allows you to check the length, time, cost and sights on the tour before you decide. There’s photography, literary, history, biking and food and drink tours on offer, but when it comes down to it – it’s got to be the ghost tours. Fun, a little bit frightening, but definitely worth it to see all the ghoulish and gruesome history of the city.

Rome’s entire city centre is an UNESCO World Heritage Site
Rome
‘The Eternal City’ – home to some of the most iconic and ancient landmarks in the world, exceptional food and artistic masterpieces. Rome’s history is evident on practically every street corner, so much so that the entire city centre is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The end of the school holidays and the slightly cooler temperatures make September the perfect time to visit this beautiful city.
What to eat
There’s no shortage of opportunities to get your fill of delicious Italian food and drink in Rome. After starting the day with an espresso – taken the Roman way: standing at the bar before swiftly heading on your way – make sure you sample some of the city’s local specialities. Cacio e Pepe – which basically translates as cheese and pepper – is a simple but delicious pasta dish that’s great for refuelling post-sightseeing.
If you fancy escaping the busy Piazza Navona, try the authentic rustic Roman food at Maccheroni – hint: book ahead if you want to sit outside. Or, for lunch with a side of history, Hostaria Costanza in the walls of Pompey’s theatre is a great spot.
Don’t forget to satisfy your sweet tooth and cool down with a traditional Italian gelato. Finding a gelato house won’t be difficult (there are hundreds across the city) but choosing which flavour to go for might be.
What to see and do
From the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum and Colosseum, to Michelangelo’s 16th century masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to awe-inspiring architecture. It’s a good idea to buy a Roma Pass to get discounted priority access to some of the city’s top sites.
If you find yourself craving green open space, pay a visit to the 200 acre gardens of the hillside park of Villa Borghese. Hire bikes or buggies and explore the park’s fountains, follies and buildings, or book tickets to the museum and gallery in advance.

Paris has some of the most famous landmarks in the world
Paris
Thanks to the speed of the Eurostar, you can be in the heart of the City of Lights in a matter of hours after hopping on the train at London’s Kings Cross St Pancras. Boasting some of the most famous landmarks in the world, amazing food and effortless chic, there’s endless things to try, see, eat and drink on a late summer visit to the French capital.
What to eat
For classic, quality (but affordable) French dishes, pay a visit to Boullion Chartier. The legendary, historically listed dining room is over a century old and draws in Parisians and tourists alike.
Parisians take their baking very seriously, so it would be a crime not to sample the sweet treats on offer across the city. If you’re arriving in the morning, try an authentic croissant, pain au chocolat or simple café – Blé Sucré (on Rue Antoine Vollon) gets rave reviews for all three.
Paris is also home to some of the finest Macarons on the planet – the French pâtisserie Ladurée has been making them for over a century and has seven stores in the city.
What to see and do
To experience ‘proper’ Paris, be sure to explore to the cobbled streets and lampost-lined plazas of Montmarte. Climb the steps to the Sacré-Cœur or jump on the funicular to take in the best views of the city.
A popular choice, whether it’s raining or not, are Paris’s creepy Catacombs. Open every day except Monday, these underground labyrinths are home to the bones of famous people from the French Revolution…
Or, take a stroll or picnic in one of the city’s many beautiful parks and open spaces. The vast Le Jardin du Luxembourg covers 25 acres of the Latin Quarter, so meander its forest, pond and huge orchid greenhouses to your heart’s content.

A busy street in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, was cornered off by the police on Sunday after the discovery of a “suspicious item.”
A major police cordon was erected outside the Omni Centre on Edinburgh’s Leith Street in the afternoon hours, the local media reported.
