China’s prime minister, Li Keqiang, lacks Mr Modi’s flair for self-promotion. But at the next gathering in Davos, he will have an even prouder boast. In the latest World Bank report, published on October 31st, China rose 32 places.
How did they do it? And how credible is their progress? In an ideal world, countries would rise in the World Bank ranking as a welcome by-product of reforms undertaken for their own sake. But India and China are among the 60-plus countries that have government units dedicated to moving upwards, almost as if it were an end in itself.
China’s comprises about 40 people; India’s perhaps 200, plus others working on state-level scorecards. Many teams visit the bank to learn precisely how the scores are calculated. India’s now thinks it could mark its own exam. It announced, long before the bank’s official assessment, the score it felt it “should” receive.
The rankings also loom large in Russia….
]]>OIL prices have a knack of jumping at the most inconvenient times. As in 2007, for instance, when the price of a barrel soared into triple digits, destabilising a world economy already heading for a financial crisis. Or, for that matter, now. At more than $ 80 per barrel, Brent crude is nearly twice as costly as in the summer of 2017 and three times as pricey as in early 2016 (see chart, left panel). Dear oil does not yet mean a crisis. But it is putting emerging markets, already labouring, under further stress.
That oil should once again be causing trouble is a bit of a surprise. Half a decade ago prices in excess of $ 100 per barrel seemed to be a permanent feature of the economic landscape. But in 2014 prices crashed, as America’s shale boom turned the market on its head. The world quickly embraced the idea of a “new normal” for oil: in which large-scale, flexible shale production in America promised to keep prices stable and moderate. Americans scarcely had an opportunity to swap their…
]]>THEY evoke metal gorillas in a cavernous, floodlit hall: 640 robots with riveting guns and arms for handling parts. They will spring into action this autumn at the opening of a new plant for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), built at a cost of €1.4bn ($ 1.6bn) on former farmland in Nitra, in western Slovakia. Cars under construction will travel along 3.9km of elevated maglev track, taking just two days from start to completion. The robots, together with 2,800 human workers, will assemble a Land Rover Discovery every two minutes.
JLR is just the latest carmaker to come to Slovakia. VW arrived 27 years ago, followed by Kia and PSA. The firms together churn out over 1m cars annually, more per head of population than any other country. JLR considered 30 or 40 locations, says Alexander Wortberg, who oversees operations at Nitra. Mexico has cheaper workers and (for now, at least) favourable access to the American market. But Nitra is close to a new motorway and Slovakia has an impressive supply…
]]>When they are not fretting about the American dollar or Chinese debt, policymakers in emerging economies keep a close eye on the oil market. The price of Brent crude has risen by nearly 50% in the past year to around $ 80 a barrel. It ranks as the 11th-biggest spike in the past 70 years (adjusted for inflation), according to UBS, a bank. So should emerging markets now worry that oil prices will carry on rising above $ 100, or that they will tumble below $ 50? The answer is yes.
Many emerging economies import oil; others export it. As a rule, higher prices hurt the first group and lower ones hurt the second. But it can be more complicated than that. Indonesia, for example, is a net importer of oil, but a net exporter of “energy”, more broadly defined, including coal and palm oil. Since coal, palm and oil prices tend to rise roughly in tandem, Indonesia would benefit overall from $ 100 oil, according to UBS. Mexico, like America, is also a net importer of crude. But in both countries a higher oil…
]]>CHINA is the stated adversary in Donald Trump’s incipient trade war. But 30% of the value of the goods China exports to America is added elsewhere. If the row escalates, countries entwined in Chinese supply chains will suffer.
In absolute terms, Japanese suppliers will fare worst. Japan is the country that exports most to firms in China that export onwards to America. But relative to economic size, such suppliers are a bigger part of several small, open Asian economies (see chart). Between 1% and 2% of some countries’ total output is shipped first to China and then on to America. If Chinese exports to America were to fall by 10%—an extreme but not impossible scenario—it…

GUEST:
I’ve always been fascinated by a game’s ability to replicate real-world systems. Social interactions, weather systems, and even nuanced economies are re-created digitally with almost alarming accuracy. This has always been a part of a game’s appeal: the opportunity to safely play around in a world that feels so real.
Today, games are inching closer to reality. Massively multiplayer online games replaced computer-controlled NPCs with real people, making room for massive online communities to grow organically. Now developers have infused in-game economies with real-world currency in an effort to better monetize their products. Instead of using virtual money earned in-game, you might just be asked to fork over real dollars for that next armor upgrade or level-up.
This is the new in-game economy. As the line between what’s real and what’s becomes further blurred, players take on more risk. Whenever a game invites players to buy items with their money, the game also inevitably (and inadvertently) invites scammers, item dupers, and fraud.
Suddenly, a fake world is fraught with real dangers.
So what’s to protect player-driven economies in a largely unregulated environment? Blockchain technology may be the solution we’re looking for, due to the decentralized network and capability to record each transaction to combat fraud.
Economies (virtual or otherwise) are governed by the law of supply and demand. The availability of an item affects the demand for that same item. Generally speaking, the lower the availability, the higher the price. In the real world, items of value are finite. They require time and resources to create which influences their market value. Games attempt to simulate this. Developers set the attributes and rarity of an item in order to incentivize players to spend more time and money to acquire it.
There are three main economic models in games:
Acquiring items, such as new weapons and armor, is often what progresses players forward and unlocks new content for them to consume. In short, it’s a rewards system that keeps the game alive and profitable.
But progress can be expensive in some games. As the free-to-play model becomes more popular, players continue to shell out more real-world money. In 2016, Game of War: Fire Age developer Machine Zone drew an astonishing average of $ 549.69 per paying user. On average, mobile gamers are paying nearly $ 10 a month on in-app purchases.
All of these economies mix scarcity with real money, a combination that leads to problems — which can be remedied by blockchain.
Whenever there’s people forking over real money, there’s always a few nefarious types looking to take advantage.
It’s estimated that “for every legitimate virtual item sold and downloaded, there are 7.5 virtual items downloads lost to fraud.” That’s an astounding ratio that works to corrupt in-game economies and rip off gamers.
Much of the problem exists due to item duping. Fraudsters find exploits within the game that allow them to duplicate what were originally rare and expensive items in high demand. Similar to the real economy, item duping increases inflation while diluting item value. Then there’s identity theft. Criminals use stolen credit cards to purchase in-game items that they sell at discount.
The blockchain, or more specifically, proof of ownership, can fix this. Luckily, proving ownership is one of the things blockchain does really well, and is being used in multiple industries outside of video games.
To quickly review, blockchain became famous as the technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. In short, it’s a decentralized ledger that records an action (in the case of Bitcoin, it’s a transaction). Once recorded, the record is encrypted and publicly accessible.
If the creation and sale of items — whether via the developer or the player — is what fuels the growth and balance of in-game economies, then proving the source of ownership for those items is essential to fighting fraud. The blockchain would act as the official record of the in-game economy. It would store information about which items were created, when they were created, who created them, and any transactions that occurred involving those items. Duping would be impossible, inflation wouldn’t occur (at least not due to fraud), and gamers wouldn’t be ripped off.
Blockchain is already starting to percolate through the gaming industry for these very reasons. CryptoKitties, perhaps one of the more famous (and adorable) examples, allows gamers to buy, sell, and trade digital cats. But unlike other collectible games, CryptoKitties allows players to track ownership of every cat on the blockchain, removing any concern that a player could be victim to the fraudulent sale or trade of these digital felines.
As games become more sophisticated in their rendering of real-world systems, they need to also become more knowledgeable about the risks involved. Historically, the gaming industry is always among the first to adopt new technologies. Blockchain should not be an exception.

Japanese brokerage Nomura projects the Indian economy is on the cusp of a cyclical recovery with 7.5 percent growth rate to be registered in 2018.
The country’s GDP bottomed-out in the second quarter of 2017 at 5.7 percent year-on-year, rising to 6.3 percent in the third quarter, according to the brokerage.
“We remain bullish on India’s macroeconomic outlook,” Nomura said in its Asia Economic Outlook.
The report highlights that Indian authorities have continued undertaking necessary structural reforms along with prudent macro policies, which led to the gradual recovery of the world’s sixth-largest economy.
At the same time, the brokerage says the tangible benefits of those reforms are currently hard to pinpoint, but they will definitely have a positive impact and boost growth. Higher crude oil prices and state election results are the main risks, according to Nomura.
The strong growth would be backed by the positive effects of bank recapitalization, a positive demonetization program and a positive fiscal impulse with Goods and Services Tax-oriented (GST) supply disruptions to be normalized, the report says.
Nomura analysts expect small and medium enterprises to boost production, exporters to benefit from the stronger global export upcycle with import substitution to reverse and growth to jumpstart.
“We expect cash-intensive sectors such as manufacturing, construction, real estate, trade, transport, hotels, and communications to benefit most,” the brokerage added.
According to the less optimistic outlook released by the UN earlier this week, India’s economy will see a 7.4 percent growth in 2019 with the performance of private investment to remain a significant macroeconomic concern.
Amid quite a rapid recovery and robust growth India may quickly become the world’s fourth-largest economy next year, topping both Britain and France, according to the International Monetary Fund.

UK Finance Minister Philip Hammond admitted Britain is no longer one the five leading global economies as he delivered a gloomy budget statement in parliament on Wednesday.
“Britain is the world’s sixth largest economy,” Hammond said in his budget speech to parliament.
The latest numbers, published by the International Monetary Fund, reveal that France will slip ahead of the UK in this year’s ranking of global economies with the gap between the two projected to get significantly wider in 2018. The rating is based on GDP forecasts, with the IMF saying France had outpaced Britain for the first time since 2013.
The US, China, and Japan have been ranked the top three in the IMF 2017 rating with Germany and France in fourth and fifth spots. India follows Britain, which is now number six. The UK may drop further, as India is expected to top both Britain and France in 2019.
Britain’s downgrade is reportedly triggered by slowing consumer spending, spiking prices and a dramatically weaker national currency, which followed the country’s decision to quit the European Union.
Sterling has declined 12 percent against the dollar since the historic Brexit vote in June 2016. The weaker pound means consumers pay more for imported goods. Inflation currently stands at three percent with wages reportedly not keeping pace with it.
“We understand the frustration of families where real incomes are under pressure,” said Hammond, pledging to cut the delays in receiving benefit payments, many families faced due to changes to the welfare system.
According to Hammond, the UK is expected to borrow £29.1 billion more by the end of the 2021-22 tax year than it expected eight months ago.
On Wednesday, the UK Office of Budget Responsibility cut its growth forecasts for this year to 1.5 percent from an estimate of two percent earlier this year. The independent fiscal watchdog projects a 1.4 percent expansion next year, followed by modest growth of 1.3 percent in 2019 and 2020.
