Virgin Atlantic is about conduct a real-world test of its greener jet fuel. The airline plans to use LanzaTech’s sustainable fuel for the first time in a commercial flight this October, with a Boeing 747 relying on the low-carbon liquid for a trip from Orlando to London’s Gatwick airport. The journey will both “raise awareness” for the more environmentally friendly technology and show that it’s viable for more than just experimental flights.

As before, LanzaTech’s particular approach to jet fuel helps the planet both through its composition and how it’s obtained. The company captures waste gas from steel mills and converts it into an ethanol that puts up to 65 percent less carbon into the atmosphere. It’s not only reducing the immediate impact of the fuel, it’s cutting pollution at the mills.

You’ll have to be patient if you want to see airlines adopting this on a wide basis. While the fuel should be “competitive” with conventional options, there’s still some work to be done before it’s useful for airlines around the globe — and even then, it’s only estimated to produce “nearly one fifth” of aviation fuel used in a given year. Nonetheless, it could be important for reducing the impact of airliners until electric aircraft are good enough to start replacing existing fleets.

You may like the thought of jeans with a worn-in finish, but that look frequently comes at a steep cost. It not only takes a long time to finish jeans (two to three pairs per hour), it frequently involves thousands of chemical formulations. Levi’s thinks there’s a faster and more environmentally responsible way. It recently introduced Project FLX, a system that uses lasers to finish denim. The technique involves taking photos of the jeans and illustrating them– the laser then gently marks the jeans based on that illustration to create the simulated wear. This cuts the finishing time from several minutes or more to just 90 seconds, and whittles the number of necessary chemicals down to a “a few dozen.”

As you might guess, this also opens the door to greater creativity. Levi’s can make an authentic-looking wear if it wants, but it can also make ornate artwork. This also dramatically reduces the lead time for decisions on jeans from several months to weeks or even days, opening the door to more on-demand manufacturing and local production. You might not get to custom-design your pants, but you might not have to worry about supplies of your favorite pair, either.

This isn’t a theoretical exercise. Levi’s is testing Project FLX now, and expects to phase it into its supply chain over the course of 2 years. This doesn’t completely eliminate concerns around the remaining chemicals in jeans production, but it could make you feel better about your next outfit — not to mention save Levi’s some time and money in the process.

British families could soon opt to have their late loved ones liquefied and poured down the drain in environmentally friendly sendoffs. The technique is thought to be more efficient than burial or cremation.

A council in the West Midlands is hoping to offer resomation – or water cremation. Bodies are submerged in an alkaline solution in a metal vat, which is then heated for around three hours in a process known as alkaline hydrolysis.

The result is a green-and-brown tinged liquid with bone fragments which can be ground down to return to families in an urn.

One added benefit of the ‘green’ funeral is anything inserted into the body can be found intact afterwards, including artificial joint replacements and golden teeth.

While cremation destroys breast implants and explodes pacemakers, resomation leaves them in one piece.

Leeds based Resomation Ltd is hoping Britons will consider the process for after their death as concerns are raised over carbon emissions from crematories.

However, plans of the local authority in Sandwell, near Birmingham, to bring in a £300,000 “Resomator” have been delayed by water company Severn Trent. The company is yet to hand over a “trade effluent” permit to the council, arguing that it only covers waste disposal and not dissolved bodies.

The process is popular in Canada and the US, but not everyone in the UK has warmed to the idea.

A source at Water UK, the trade body representing regional water suppliers, told the Sunday Times: “This is an absolute first in the UK, we have serious concerns about the public acceptability of this.

“It is the liquefied remains of the dead going into the water system. We don’t think the public will like the idea.”

Sandy Sullivan, 61, founder of UK firm Resomation, says “dozens” of British funeral directors are interested in his machine.

“There is no technical reason why the liquid can’t go down the drain. It is a very treatable organic liquid. It is sterile and there is no DNA in it,” he said.

“We are copying nature. The body dissolves by soil bacteria and it is a very long process.

“This is a third option, other than cremation and burial. Resoma in Latin means ‘rebirth of the human body. When I die, this is the way that I want to go.”

The Tigertron studio unveiled its debut game, Jupiter & Mars, at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event tonight. It’s a single-player virtual reality puzzler set in a future where humanity is now extinct — however, its influence is still felt in the world’s oceans. Tigertron developed the title in partnership with Australian studios Tantalus Media and Wicked Witch Software, and it’s slated to release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR in May 2018.

Jupiter and Mars are two dolphins who are attempting to save the ocean’s reefs and its ecosystem, which have been thrown out of whack by the toxic machinery that humanity left behind. On their quest to shut off the industrial equipment, they receive help from whales known as the Elders. The player will mainly control Jupiter, with Mars along as an AI companion. However, you’ll be able to direct Mars to interact with parts of the environment and to help you with puzzles.

Ex-journalists James Mielke and Sam Kennedy founded Tigertron in 2015 with a mission to create games tackling real-world issues. Now it’s honed in on the environment as a crucial issue to address. It’s committed to donating part of its profits from game sales to environmentalist organizations, and it also plans to collaborate with conservation groups to ensure its games are scientifically accurate.

“So in this case we’re focusing on the topics of climate change and how it’s affecting the polar ice caps, species extinction, and rising sea levels,” said Mielke in an email to GamesBeat. “The game also reveals the consequences of the tremendous amount of plastic pollution we’re just dumping in the oceans. So the groups and organizations we donate to will be the ones making strides in these areas.”

Mielke has always been passionate about environmental issues, and when he had kids, he began to really think about what the future would look like and how the environment would affect them. He points to two films by the Oceanic Preservation Society, The Cove and Racing Extinction, as big inspirations for the way they used multimedia to talk about important topics.

“So instead of leaving the game industry to wander off and become an environmentalist with no practical experience in his 40s, I decided to use my game industry experience to try to create games that take these themes, and create compelling worlds with them,” said Mielke. “Fortunately I found a like-minded partner in Sam Kennedy, whom I worked with at Ziff-Davis Media for 10 years. We don’t need to create games in space, on other planets, or in other galaxies or universes to be interesting. Our own planet is inspiring enough, and we may have an environmental theme to our efforts, hopefully people will see that our games will just look really cool. That’s the first step in getting people interested.”

Before starting the studio, Mielke was the coproducer of the rhythm action game Child of Eden at studio Q Entertainment. He also produced the PlayStation Vita musical puzzler Lumines Electronic Symphony. He’s the former editor-in-chief of Electronic Gaming Monthly and 1UP.com, which Kennedy launched along with Gaming-Age.com, the predecessor to well-known game forum NeoGAF. In his 20 years as part of the industry, Kennedy was also a director at IGN.

You’ll need your own vehicle if you want to be a courier for Postmates, but if you’re in San Francisco, you can rent an eco-friendly option from the company itself. The food (and booze) delivery service has started renting out e-bikes to delivery personnel in the city as part of the zero-emission initiative it launched a few months ago in Manhattan, where it has electric scooters on offer. While the program is only live in two locations, Postmates says it could eventually expand to other cities across the US.

San Francisco’s e-bikes can only last 20 to 40 miles on a single charge, a range much shorter compared to Postmates’ scooters in New York, which can run for 60 miles. However, it’s also cheaper: couriers can rent it for $ 80 a month instead of $ 120, paid via the money they make through the service. Besides, each e-bike comes with an extra battery and a bag they can use to hold deliveries.

By offering e-bikes for rent, the company is hoping not just to be kinder to the environment but also to boost its network’s earning potential. It would eliminate the need for gas, after all. And since it can go faster than a regular bike, couriers could take more orders and earn more money within the same amount of time.
