Millions of Americans watched the event unfold last August, making it one of the most-photographed in history. And Carmichael felt the pressure.
He studied the eclipse’s path, and realized that a Southwest Airlines flight from Portland to St. Louis would put him in the perfect geographical — and physical — location to photograph the event.
Carmichael was ready to bribe a passenger for a window seat. Luckily, he didn’t have to — and the entire flight crew got on board with his mission.

Southwest doesn’t offer pre-assigned seats, so Carmichael came prepared to pay somebody for one facing the right window.
But once he explained his vision to the flight crew, they assured him he would get a great seat — and the captain actually cleaned Carmichael’s window to make sure it was crystal clear.
The pilots actually circled the eclipse a few times so passengers could witness the once-in-a-lifetime event. That’s when Carmichael captured his stunning photo.

“In photography, it’s very rare for something you envision to manifest itself, let alone to turn out even better than you had hoped,” he said.
“I had never felt more relieved, grateful, and excited in my life. Against all odds, it came together. It felt meant to be — and literally changed my life,” he told My Modern Met.

“We’re all one. We’re all connected. And if you keep viewing the world as a pale blue dot, as Carl Sagan would say, it humbles you — and we all could use an ego check. And take care of each other” he said.

The longest –and creepiest– lunar eclipse of the century will take place Friday and Saturday, prompting renewed fear among those who think that this weekend’s blood moon spells the end of days.
What is a blood moon?
The lunar eclipse will see the Moon turn a red shade, thanks to the Earth passing between the Sun and the Moon, which makes some of the solar light bounce around the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere. The red and orange wavelengths scatter more than blue and violent ones, making the moon look ‘bloody’.
This eclipse will last one hour and 43 minutes, and the Moon will be in the Earth’s shadow for four hours altogether.
This entire week, it will be raining and at the end of this week, it will be the longest blood moon of the century. Idk what that means to y'all but I'm battening down the hatches
The best views are in Africa, the Middle East, India and China. People in the rest of Africa, Europe and parts of Asia and Australia will also see the spectacle, but it’s bad news for those in North America and Greenland, as the blood moon won’t be visible. Moon enthusiasts can watch a livestream from anywhere in the world, however, with the full eclipse due to begin at 19:30 UTC.
Does this mean the world is ending?
According to the prolific YouTube preacher Paul Begley, yes. He announced in a sermon that God told him to “go check it out” and, when he did, he realized that the blood moon will be over Jerusalem, which he believes is significant given Israel turned 70 this year.
Begley went on to quote an oft-used passage from the Bible’s Book of Joel which warns that “the sun will turn into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.” He cited other ominous moon-related lines from the scripture, before adding a disclaimer so that no one could “debunk what I’m saying.”
“Everything I’m saying is factual,” he proclaimed.
We’ll all have to wait and see whether Begley’s prediction rings true but, judging by previous end of days predictions that have come about before unusual moons, it’s unlikely to be something to worry about.

Developers of Ethereum, the world’s No. 2 digital currency by market capitalization, have closed a serious security hole that allowed virtually anyone with an Internet connection to manipulate individual users’ access to the publicly accessible ledger.
So-called eclipse attacks work by preventing a cryptocurrency user from connecting to honest peers. Attacker-controlled peers then feed the target a manipulated version of the blockchain the entire currency community relies on to reconcile transactions and enforce contractual obligations. Eclipse attacks can be used to trick targets into paying for a good or service more than once and to co-opt the target’s computing power to manipulate algorithms that establish crucial user consensus. Because Ethereum supports “smart contracts” that automatically execute transactions when certain conditions in the blockchain are present, Ethereum eclipse attacks can also be used to interfere with those self-enforcing agreements.
Like most cryptocurrencies, Ethereum uses a peer-to-peer mechanism that compiles input from individual users into an authoritative blockchain. In 2015 and again in 2016, separate research teams devised eclipse attacks against Bitcoin that exploited P2P weaknesses. Both were relatively hard to pull off. The 2015 attack required a botnet or a small ISP that controlled thousands of devices, while the 2016 attack relied on the control of huge chunks of Internet addresses through a technique known as border gateway protocol hijacking. The demands made it likely that both attacks could be carried out only by sophisticated and well-resourced hackers.

https://briefnews.eu/2018-mitsubishi-eclipse-cross-vs-small-crossover-suvs-how-they-compare-on-paper/
https://briefnews.eu/2018-mitsubishi-eclipse-cross-vs-small-crossover-suvs-how-they-compare-on-paper/#respondFri, 23 Feb 2018 19:07:09 +0000http://briefnews.eu/2018-mitsubishi-eclipse-cross-vs-small-crossover-suvs-how-they-compare-on-paper/
In the midst of the crossover SUV boom, each traditional size segment has become saturated. As a result, automakers are beginning to fill the gaps that separate classes, giving us some interesting in-between options. The all-new 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross jumps right into one of those in-between categories bookended by compact and subcompact crossovers. It’s a niche that offers more space and feature content than the smallest vehicles, with an extra dose of style and a lower price than bigger ones.
Because of the Eclipse Cross‘ in-between nature, though, there’s not really an obvious direct competitor. As such, we’ve selected a diverse group of small crossovers that are similar to the Eclipse Cross in some but not all key areas: size, price, feature content, style and likely buyers. The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek, 2018 Toyota C-HR and 2018 Nissan Rogue Sport each have elements in common, but are different enough to provide useful points of comparison.
A chart of specifications and key standard features is shown below, followed by more in-depth analysis. And if you wish to compare these crossovers with others not listed, be sure to check out our comparison tools.
Engines and Drivetrains
One of the Eclipse Cross’ biggest advantages in this segment will be its engine. Subcompact crossovers, including the other three we’ve chosen, are sluggish to say the least. This new Mitsubishi should be different as it packs a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that belts out a whopping 184 pound-feet of torque. We say whopping, because the C-HR, Crosstrek and Rogue Sport all have between 139 and 147 pound-feet. Horsepower is similarly unimpressive at just 152 horsepower – the same as the Crosstrek – but that torque should make passing and on-ramp runs much more satisfying.
The appeal of crossovers for many people is the availability of all-wheel-drive, and this is where the Subaru gets an advantage. Like with all Subarus that aren’t a BRZ, the Crosstrek has standard all-wheel drive. The Mitsubishi comes close, making all-wheel drive standard on every trim level except the very base ES trim level. On the Rogue Sport, all-wheel drive is an option on all trim levels. Depending on where you live, though, being able to have front drive on a high-trim crossover could be a plus because it will save some money and improve fuel economy. The C-HR loses this battle as it’s only available with front-wheel drive.
Another area in which the Crosstrek has an advantage is its standard manual transmission, which makes it a bit more appealing for those who like to row their own. Every other vehicle here comes with a CVT only.
Exterior Dimensions and Interior Space
On the outside, the C-HR is easily the smallest and has the least amount of ground clearance at 5.9 inches (that’s only 0.2 more than a Camry). The Rogue Sport is about an inch or two larger than the Toyota in most exterior dimensions, while the Eclipse Cross and Crosstrek are the largest.
They differ in height, though, with the Eclipse Cross towering over the rest at 67.1 inches with front-drive and 67.3 inches with all-wheel-drive. The Crosstrek in comparison measures 63.6 inches despite having the most ground clearance at 8.7 inches (not really surprising as it is, after all, an Impreza on stilts). Few SUVs of any sort come close to that, so it’s impressive that the Eclipse Cross comes close at 8 inches with front-drive and 8.6 inches with all-wheel drive. Really, between this and its mostly standard all-wheel drive, the Eclipse Cross joins the Crosstrek as one of the best choices in this size segment for tackling dirt roads and deep snow.
Unsurprisingly, as the smallest vehicle of the group, the C-HR has the least amount of cargo space, especially with the rear seats folded. Its 19 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats isn’t way off the other three, but the 36.4 cubic feet with the seats down is paltry when the next largest capacity (the Eclipse Cross) is 48.8 cubic feet. The cargo capacity champ is the Rogue Sport. As we note, that capacity varies by trim due to a useful cargo management system included on upper trim levels that robs some cubic feet.
For passengers, each vehicle is surprisingly close in accommodations. But there are a couple that have unique disadvantages. If you’re tall, the Eclipse Cross may not be ideal. Despite being the tallest crossover in the group, it has the least amount of headroom front and rear, with roughly 3 inches less up front and 5 less in the rear. The C-HR may also look comparable on paper, but it should be noted that its aft quarters are compromised by pretty dismal visibility. It’s like a black plastic cave back there.
Fuel Economy
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross doesn’t have fuel economy numbers yet available, but we can still compare the others in this area. The most frugal of the bunch is the CVT-equipped Subaru Crosstrek thanks to its superior highway fuel economy number, but it gets the same 29-mpg combined figure as the C-HR. Note, however, that’s with standard all-wheel drive whereas the Toyota is front-drive only. In other words, Subaru still wins (well, unless you get the manual, in which case it loses big time at 25 mpg combined).
The Rogue Sport, by comparison gets 27 mpg combined with AWD and 28 with FWD. According to the EPA, that difference would amount to between $ 50 and $ 100 in average annual fuel cost. So, not much.
Standard Features and Pricing
Where these vehicles vary most is in pricing and standard equipment, and they span the gamut from bare-bones and low-cost, to pricier but very well-equipped. Representing the bare-bones perspective is the Nissan Rogue Sport. It has the lowest base price of $ 22,615, but you won’t get many premium features. It comes with just plain steel wheels with plastic covers, a 5-inch infotainment screen without touch functionality, and general standards such as cruise control, a manually height-adjustable driver seat and Bluetooth. And, as we already mentioned, quite a bit of space when choosing the base model.
But for just about $ 100 more, you can get a base model Crosstrek, which adds all-wheel-drive and 17-inch alloy wheels to the equation. Not only that, it gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. It’s the only vehicle in this group to offer that infotainment addition as standard. It’s worth noting that this base price is for the manual transmission version. Adding the CVT bumps the price up $ 1,000, making the Nissan a bit more appealing for budget-minded automatic fans.
At the top of the price range is the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, which starts at $ 24,290. It comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 7-inch touchscreen. It doesn’t come with CarPlay or Android Auto, or all-wheel-drive for that matter. But it does add automatic climate control and heated side mirrors (plus the strongest engine).
The Toyota C-HR starts roughly $ 800 less than the Mitsubishi at $ 23,495. But where it shines is in standard features. Its 18-inch alloy wheels are the largest of the bunch, which is a positive for style-conscious buyers, and maybe a downside for pothole heavy regions. It also treats the driver and passenger equally giving them both six ways to manually adjust their seats, and they each get their own zone of automatic climate control. It comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, but its an aftermarket-style unit rather than a full Toyota Entune touchscreen, and there’s no way to get CarPlay or Android Auto. The C-HR also includes a leather steering wheel, automatic high-beams, and adaptive cruise control. It even has fancy safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane-departure assist. So as long as you don’t need to mirror your smartphone on the infotainment, and don’t need all-wheel-drive, the C-HR is hard to beat in the feature department.
Conclusions
This is a pretty oddball group to be sure, but it shows that would-be crossover buyers have a diverse selection of choices. Judging by what we’ve found above, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross comes close to matching the Subaru Crosstrek’s appeal as an all-weather, go-anywhere choice, but with superior performance and funkier styling more in keeping with the C-HR. The Rogue Sport would be the more practical, sensible alternative, while that C-HR would be the most fashionable, feature-rich choice.

The first shipment of the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has arrived in the United States. Mitsubishi’s new all-wheel drive compact crossover will go on sale in showrooms in early March with a starting price of $ 24,290, including a destination charge of $ 995.
The Eclipse Crossdebuted last year at the Geneva Motor Show with design cues borrowed from the XR-PHEV II Concept from 2015. The exterior design, which Mitsubishi says is inspired by a runner in the “Get set” position, includes a forward-raked rear window, wedge profile and deep side crease. Its starting price slots it just below competitors like the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson, and it will come in four trim levels.
Those include the base ES, which is the only trim available with front-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive, or S-AWC in Mitsubishi speak, adds only $ 600 to the base price. The LE S-AWC trim starts at $ 25,890 and the range-topping SE S-AWC starts at $ 27,390, though neither are eligible for options, so those are pretty much the prices customers will be dealing with.
All trim levels are powered by a direct-injection turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four that makes 152 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The S-AWC acronym would stand for Super All-Wheel Control, Mitsubishi’s system that manages torque supplied to each wheel for added straight-line stability and cornering performance. It offers three selectable driving modes — auto, snow and gravel — to enhance performance. Safety technology includes blind-spot warning and lane-change assist, forward collision mitigation and lane-departure warning, plus a system that automatically adjusts headlight brightness to the conditions.
Interior features include an available 7-inch infotainment display with a touchpad controller, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus voice recognition via Google Assistant or Siri. There’s also a full-color LCD head-up display available. A dual-pane sunroof and heated rear seats are some of the other niceties.
The Eclipse Cross joins the brand’s stable of crossovers, the Outlander and slightly smaller Outlander Sport, which helped Mitsubishi to a banner year in 2017, selling more than 100,000 vehicles for the first time in a decade. It also joins the Outlander PHEV, also new for 2018.

Astrology, the study of the movements of celestial objects, is affected by the changing moon. So what bearing will this week’s super moon have on your horoscope? Astrologer Jeff Prince gave a detailed analysis to Express.co.uk.
Jeff said: “If we thought we had an accurate measure of certain situations, the Eclipse could reveal how wrong we were, but in helpful – and potentially delightful – ways.
“Eclipses are the most powerful and far-reaching astrological events. They tend to bring into the open what has been suppressed or ignored. Today’s Eclipse in the sign of Leo will reveal that more hope exists within certain situations or arrangements we believed offered little in the way of hope!”

ARIES: Some healing can happen between you and a certain person. It could be time to let bygones be bygones, and this could be connected with affairs of the heart. Improving a connection will involve accepting a difficult change, but the reward for doing so will be far-reaching and worth it!
TAURUS: The Eclipse focuses its energy on your ‘emotional foundations,’ and this could involve something connected with your home or family. However, it’s important to recognise a storm in a teacup when you see one. A matter might require you to handle it sensitively, but an improvement can happen with a family member or domestic set-up if you can keep emotions in check!
GEMINI: Someone’s words could carry considerable clout and possibly touch a raw nerve with you. It’s also possible your mind could be cast to the past, resulting in an uncomfortable stroll down Memory Lane. However, all of this points to removing yourself from a tired, tedious situation or arrangement that you’ve wanted to shake for some time. You’ve wanted to see progress that hasn’t been forthcoming so far. That’s about to change now.
CANCER: Money matters could preoccupy your thoughts, especially as the Eclipse focuses its energy on your earnings. However, any concerns you have about your bank balance could be connected to deeper issues surrounding your confidence or self-worth. In any case, a need exists to improve and strengthen your financial position. A boost to your confidence might encourage you to explore new possibilities you hadn’t considered!

Eclipse 2018: A super moon is occurring, but how will it affect your horoscope?
LEO: Today’s Eclipse occurs in your sign. If you’re a rare Leo who hasn’t sensed powerful change has been brewing in the background for some time, then coming events could reveal how far-reaching and transformational the change coming your way is. For some Leos, this could involve a significant change in appearance, but it’s the way hope is revived in a particular way that will be most powerful.
VIRGO: The Eclipse could bring you back to Earth with a bit of a bump, but in a necessary and timely way. The saying about being able only to please some people some of the time, and not everyone all of the time comes to mind. You could be going to greater lengths than are necessary to please or placate others. This might be due to you having unrealistic ideas of what they need and what you’re responsible for providing. A ‘reality check’ is in store. It’s time to see at least one arrangement or commitment more realistically.
LIBRA: You’re a clever so-and-so. You know it. Others know it, too. However, it appears you could do with a bit more acknowledgment of your dedication, commitment, and effort in at least one area and that’s something the Eclipse intends to assist with. A bit of praise will go a long way, and with your confidence boosted as a result, you’d be wise to set your sights higher and see what else you’re capable of!
SCORPIO: The Eclipse focus its energy on your career and status in the eyes of others. You might be required to ‘think on your feet’ or react swiftly to an opportunity, but have a real chance to shine and impress others by doing so. If someone suspected you were ‘the right person for the job’ in some way, then they’re about to be proved correct!

Eclipse 2018: Astrologer Jeff Prince revealed how the super moon could affect you to Express.co.uk
SAGITTARIUS: The Eclipse enhances your vision of the future, and you could be surprised at how certain plans that mattered greatly to you at one are replaced by new interests and pursuits. ‘Broadening your mind’ is increasingly important now, with study and travel particularly highlighted. You want to fill your mind with more intellectual and possibly spiritual pursuits, and coming events will help you to do so.
CAPRICORN: The Eclipse highlights the arrival of money that comes from sources other than earnings, or a new financial strategy being implemented. It also highlights healing or a significant improvement in a ‘balance of power.’ For some time, you have felt a certain person has had too much of an ‘upper hand’ with an arrangement you wished was more equitable. Feeling a bit more appreciated and less beholden to them will work wonders for your confidence.
AQUARIUS: The Eclipse highlights partnerships and commitments. If you’ve seen one relationship in an unrealistic light, then that could become clear now, or shortly. A fresh start and new chapter are about to commence with one connection, bringing a sense of relief and new-found clarity. Removing rose-tinted glasses where one involvement is concerned is both helpful and timely.
PISCES: A powerful and far-reaching change is connected with your daily routine. If your New Year resolutions to get fitter or healthier didn’t get off to a good start, then embarking upon a new health-related regime now could prove surprisingly easier. A change could also occur with work, and if you feel your imagination or creativity haven’t been utilised in ways you wish they were, then a chance to apply both in a new work setting – or with a potentially lucrative project – could present itself.

You wake up and everyone on the colony is dead. What happened? How can you escape from there? And… who are you, anyway? This scenario hardly sounds innovative, but science-fiction adventure The Mind’s Eclipse still has a few surprises in store for you.
In true adventure gaming fashion, you explore the derelict space station, solve a few rather easy inventory puzzles, and try to piece together the fate of the station’s crew by reading log entries which are scattered all over the place. Since everyone’s dead, that’s pretty much all you do, but it’s intriguing enough.
Actually, you do have someone to keep you company: the rather enigmatic L, an AI companion inside your head, offers help and the occasional snarky reply. (You keep wondering if she’s really on your side, but at least she’s better than that weird COSy thing that sometimes just appears in your mind and… just… takes over.)
The game’s presentation appears rather sparse, with static screens in hand-drawn black and white and atmospheric background music. This perfectly adds to the atmosphere, rendering yor exploration solitary and oppressive. It also let’s you focus on the narrative and perfectly fits the game’s underlying themes.
At the end of the day, The Mind’s Eclipse offers intriguing sci-fi trappings and – without venturing too far into spoiler territory – a memorable exploration of grief and loss with a fair bit of horror thrown into the mix. That’s hardly uplifting stuff, but it’s a short, captivating experience very much worth your time.
You can purchase The Mind’s Eclipse from itch.io and Steam for $ 9.99. A playable demo can be found here. For more information, visit the game’s website or follow developer Mind’s Eclipse Interactive on Twitter.

One of the more exciting events of 2017 was the total solar eclipse that was viewable across the US. And if you enjoyed it as much as I did, I have some good news for you. While the US won’t be getting another look at a total solar eclipse until 2024, parts of the US will get to see another rare eclipse in 2018 and they’ll get to check it out this month.
On January 31st, there will be a total lunar eclipse. What makes this one so special is that it’s happening during a Blue Moon, or the second full moon of the month (depending on which definition you go by). These two events haven’t coincided since 1866, making this one the first in over 150 years. The next one won’t be until 2028.
As Space.com reports, not everyone in the US will get to see it in full. Central and eastern Asia, Indonesia, New Zealand and parts of Australia will have a good view of the event. Alaska, Hawaii and northwest Canada will see the whole thing as well, but more eastern parts of North and Central America will have a shorter show. For example in US Mountain time (MST), the eclipse will begin at 4:48 AM, but as the full eclipse winds down, the moon will already be dipping below the horizon. For Eastern time (EST) in the US, residents in that region will see the eclipse begin at 6:48 AM and the moon will dip out of view shortly thereafter.
In other moon news, there’s a supermoon tonight. The full moon will be the closest it gets to Earth in its orbit making it appear a little bit bigger and a little bit brighter than a typical full moon. Though you probably won’t notice the difference with your bare eyes, you should still check it out. The sky is beautiful and looking up is a great way to start 2018.
