Three-time space visitor Don Pettit, who currently has his feet on terra firma, posted the remarkable photo on his Twitter account on Monday.

It may not be obvious at first glance — or even second — but the long-exposure image (below) shows Earth through the windows of the space station’s Cupola module. If you look carefully toward the bottom left of the picture, you’ll also see some beautiful star trails.

“Fish-eye lens long-exposure view of the Earth from the Cupola, aboard the ISS,” the astronaut wrote in his tweet. “Below, city lights flow as orange streaks, and faint star trails that show the Earth’s rotation are visible in the lower left. Astrophotography can find exciting ways to combine both science and art!”

— Don Pettit (@astro_Pettit) September 11, 2022

In recent days, another of Pettit’s images showing Earth lights and star trails caused quite a stir online.

Trails of light from Earth and stars.
NASA/Don Pettit

Pettit’s most recent space trip was in 2012, so space fans must be delighted that the experienced astronaut and keen astrophotographer is sharing some of the extraordinary images that he captured so many years ago.

While Pettit’s work can be beautifully surreal, more recent ISS inhabitants have been sharing Earth images that show more clearly various features of the land and sea.

French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, for example, is a keen photographer and during his most recent mission captured some fabulous shots of our planet. And if you think the enviable viewpoint 250 miles above Earth would make it easy to capture such shots, then think again. It actually takes a great deal of planning.

With its seven windows, the Cupola module offers the best views of Earth and beyond from the confines of the space station. This makes it a popular spot for astronauts to go and relax during their downtime.

But the largely unobstructed views also make the Cupola an important work location as astronauts can use it to monitor and assist not only spacewalks but also the arrival and departure of spacecraft.

 • Mediterranean Shipping Company rerouted its vessels to help protect blue whales near Sri Lanka.
 • Conservation groups recommended the move after research showed it could help avoid whale collisions.
 • Blue whales, which are endangered, grow to be 80 feet long and can live for 80 years.

The largest container line in the world has rerouted its ships passing near the coast of Sri Lanka in order to avoid potential collisions with endangered blue whales.

"MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has taken a major step to help protect blue whales and other cetaceans living and feeding in the waters off the coast of Sri Lanka by modifying navigation guidance in line with the advice of scientists and other key actors in the maritime sector," MSC said in a statement provided to Insider.

MSC said the action was taken in response to research conducted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) along with other groups and universities. The vessels passing through Sri Lanka's coastal waters will now travel about 15 nautical miles to the south from the previous route.

Blue whales can be found year-round off the southern tip of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, resulting in a high risk of collisions as the usual international shipping lanes pass right through the area where most of the whales congregate, the IFAW said in a statement praising MSC's rerouting.

"By ensuring these small changes, MSC is making a significant difference for these endangered whales. Whales often die as a result of collisions and this population is at risk. Ship strikes are both a conservation and a welfare problem, and even one whale death is one too many," Sharon Livermore, the director of marine conservation at IFAW, said.

MSC's voluntary rerouting does not impact other shipping carriers, but advocates hope their decision could help lead to permanent changes to the official shipping lane that would impact all vessels. Research conducted on the area's blue whale population found that adjusting the shipping lane would reduce the risk of a ship striking a whale by 95%, according to IFWA.

"Re-routeing is the key hope to turn the tide for blue whales off Sri Lanka. It also demonstrates to the Sri Lankan government that now is the time to take appropriate action and move the shipping lane out of blue whale habitat for all merchant vessels," Nicolas Entrup, the director of International Relations at OceanCare, said.

Blue whales are the largest living animals on earth. They can reach 80 to 100 feet in length and live for 70 to 80 years. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists blue whales as endangered, noting the species was hunting to the brink of extinction by the 1960s, at which time it was given international protections.

While hunting blue whales is prohibited, the species continues to be threatened, primarily due to declines in its primary food source, krill. The decline in krill has been linked to the climate crisis, ocean acidification, and other factors.

MSC became the largest container line in the world earlier this year, with a fleet capable of carrying 4.3 million standard 20-foot containers.

During the series’ earlier instalments, Lucifer was desperate to make a connection with his estranged father, the Creator of the Universe himself, God.

After years of refusing to answer his son’s prayers, God will finally make his physical debut on the show played by 24’s original President Dennis Haysbert.

Dennis will reunite with his former 24 co-star D. B. Woodside, who portrays God’s oldest angelic son, Amenadiel, after playing President David Palmer’s brother and Chief of Staff Wayne Palmer for the popular thriller.

During an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lucifer series regular Lesley-Ann Brandt gushed about working with the presidential star for season five.

It has been used for three series of the hit Netflix drama, doubling as the royal residence at Windsor. When Olivia Colman and company filmed the third season they were accompanied by an army of backroom staff including their own caterers. But there are no airs and graces with Britain’s new Queen of the show and she invited staff to lunch every day. Nicola Wheeler, general manager at the castle, said: “We don’t have a canteen, so we either bring our own or use the tea room.

“The food they put on for these stars was fantastic. Everything was so delicious.

“They had big casseroles, vegetarian options and best of all, a choice of yummy puddings. The whole staff were invited every day. They are all so nice and down to earth, but it is a bit strange going on your lunch break and sitting down with an Oscar winner.”

Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire is home to the Duke of Rutland’s family. It has also appeared in Young Victoria, The Da Vinci Code and Victoria And Abdul.

Nicola says they hope the crew will return for the fourth series of The Crown, adding: “Everyone here is a huge fan, it’s fun watching the places where we work. And we hope they’ll bring the caterers back with them.”

 • Japan’s yen has gone into orbit on Thursday, breaking through key technical support levels as rising global growth risks nudged investors into a rush to safe haven-assets.
 • Apple cut its sales forecast for its latest quarter, citing slowing iPhone sales in China, while Chinese manufacturing reads added to the burden of worries.
 • The subsequent spike in risk aversion triggered massive stop-loss flows from anxious investors who had held short positions on the yen.
 • The Aussie dollar dipped to decade lows in early trade.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – The yen soared versus its peers on Thursday, breaking through key technical support levels as heightened global growth risks pushed investors into safe haven-assets in moves exacerbated by thin holiday volumes.

Charging the risk averse mood was a rare revenue warning from Apple, which added to worries about fading global demand.

Google Maps reveals couple in VERY awkward position on beach – what on earth is happening? https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-reveals-couple-in-very-awkward-position-on-beach-what-on-earth-is-happening/ https://briefnews.eu/google-maps-reveals-couple-in-very-awkward-position-on-beach-what-on-earth-is-happening/#respond Wed, 26 Dec 2018 16:03:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-maps-reveals-couple-in-very-awkward-position-on-beach-what-on-earth-is-happening/

From exploring some of the world’s best-known sights, to finding your way to somewhere new ahead of making the journey, there’s countless reasons why people use the Google Maps Street View function. The cameras offer a window on the world, meaning you can see what a place is like – without even having to set foot outside of your door. It all happens thanks to the Google cameras, which capture the moment in real life – before it’s uploaded onto Google. However, it seems that two people unknowingly fell victim to a rather unfortunate run-in with the search engine’s tool.

The incident saw the pair in question spending time with friends on a beach in Leblon, Brazil.

The very innocent mix-up occurred as the group sat on towels in the sunshine.

In the capture, it seems that the two were sitting in a rather bizarre position.

However, upon a closer look, it’s very apparent that this is not due to the duo themselves.

Instead, there has clearly been a technical glitch with the Google cameras – which has caused their bodies to look very different than to what you may expect.

While they were obviously sitting beside one another, the technical hiccup makes it seem as though the woman’s neck and head is coming out of her knees.

In fact, as she gazes over at a pal, her upper torso appears to be totally absent.

Meanwhile, the close proximity of the man sitting beside her makes it seem as though his upper body is connected with hers.

This is not the first time that bodies have appeared to be entangled on Google Maps.

The issue – known as photography splicing – can be caused due to the way that the images are assembled.

The cameras shoot content at 360 degrees, with the photos being fixed together in order to – usually – create a seamless image.

However, when there is movement within the scene, this can create a bizarre shift in the finished capture.

Another location which has been filmed by the Google cameras also featured a rather unfortunate issue.

The road, in the area of Aldgate, London, shows the busy road.

However, as Google Street View users make their way along the high street, the screen suddenly goes dark.

This dramatic change came about due to the different timing of the sections being filmed by the cameras – with the latter being filmed without daylight.

 • “Earthrise” is the first image of Earth captured by humans from space.
 • The photo of Earth was taken aboard Apollo 8 on December 24, 1968, by lunar module pilot Bill Anders.
 • The image made people aware of Earth’s fragility, since it was seen against the blackness of space.

On December 24, 1968 — exactly 50 years ago — Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders became the first humans to circle the moon.

The mission was historic. But equally memorable is the famous “Earthrise” photo that resulted, showing Earth rising above the lunar landscape.

2019 will be an extraordinary year in space. Here’s what NASA, SpaceX, and the night sky have in store for planet Earth. https://briefnews.eu/2019-will-be-an-extraordinary-year-in-space-heres-what-nasa-spacex-and-the-night-sky-have-in-store-for-planet-earth/ https://briefnews.eu/2019-will-be-an-extraordinary-year-in-space-heres-what-nasa-spacex-and-the-night-sky-have-in-store-for-planet-earth/#respond Thu, 13 Dec 2018 20:59:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2019-will-be-an-extraordinary-year-in-space-heres-what-nasa-spacex-and-the-night-sky-have-in-store-for-planet-earth/ big falcon rocket bfr spaceship bfs booster bfb launch clouds earth spacex 30934146988_dd61f74911_oSpaceX

 • The 2019 calendar is full of major events in spaceflight, planetary science, and astronomy.
 • SpaceX and Boeing hope to launch NASA astronauts inside commercial spaceships for the first time next year.
 • Elon Musk may also conduct a test launch of his rocket company’s “Starship” spacecraft.
 • Plus, humanity will make its farthest-ever visit to a planet-like object, and China intends to return its first lunar soil samples to Earth.
 • Meteor showers, total lunar and solar eclipses, and other night-sky events will also grace our planet.

When it comes to events in space, 2019 is going to be an extraordinary year.

That’s not to say 2018 will be an easy act to follow. After all, SpaceX debuted the world’s most powerful operational launch system (called Falcon Heavy), sent a car beyond Mars, and helped lift off more orbital rockets than in any year since 1990.

With a few exceptions, NASA also had a momentous 12 months: The US space agency announced its first-ever commercial astronaut crews, began a new hunt for Earth-like planets, sent a probe to “touch” the sun, and landed its InSight robot on Mars.

China, meanwhile, crashed an old space station into the ocean and launched a small fleet of moon satellites.

But 2019 will be a doozy — a sentiment that NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine highlighted after NASA’s recent Mars landing.

“Right now at NASA, there is more underway than in I don’t know how many years past,” Bridenstine said during a live broadcast. “It’s a drought, and then all of the sudden there’s all of these activities.”

Here are some of the biggest events you can expect from aerospace companies, government space agencies, and the night sky next year.

This story has been updated with new information. It was originally published on November 29, 2018.

January 1: NASA’s New Horizons probe will fly by Ultima Thule, the farthest object humanity has ever tried to visit

NASA/JHUAPL/SwRI/Steve Gribben

After NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto in July 2015, the robot kept going. The space agency now plans to use the nuclear-powered probe to visit an icy body called Ultima Thule, or 2014 MU69. The object is in the Kuiper Belt, about 4 billion miles from Earth, and researchers think it’s a peanut-shaped rock.

Overnight on December 31, 2018 — New Year’s Eve — and into January 1, New Horizons will fly by, study, and photograph the mysterious object. Scientists estimate that it’s perhaps 20 miles long and 12 miles wide (roughly the size of a city). New Horizon’s flyby will make Ultima Thule the most distant object ever visited by humanity.

January 3: China becomes the first nation to land on the far side of the moon

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC)

China is pursuing an aggressive lunar-exploration campaign called Chang’e (the name comes from a moon goddess). It started with the moon orbiter Chang’e-1, which launched in October 2007. Two more missions after that included landers, a rover, relay satellites, and microsatellites.

Chang’e-4 launched on December 7 and will attempt to set down a new lander and rover on the far side of the moon on 2018.

January 3-4: The Quadrantids meteor shower peaks

Mike Lewinski

In 2019, bright moonlight won’t get in the way of obfuscating this annual meteor shower. The event starts to peak around 9 p.m. EST on January 3 and lasts through dawn the next day. The Quadrantids can produce 50 to 100 meteors per hour, according to EarthSky — but you need to find a dark night sky to see more than a meteor per minute.
