After four years of protecting Purgatory with her Peacemaker, Wynonna Earp got to quite literally ride off into the sunset. And she did so while straddling a motorcycle, with Doc Holliday seated behind her.

Mind you, the two almost didn’t wind up together. Following the simply beautiful “WayHaught” wedding, Doc (played by Tim Rozon) was determined to put Purgatory in Charlene’s rear view mirror and get to living life as “just a man,” and Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) felt compelled to stay put as Purgatory’s protector. But with an empowering nudge from li’l sis Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), Wynonna caught up to her man and professed her love, after which they decided to travel light, for the first time in a long time, and pay their daughter Alice a visit in MIracles, Montana.

TVLine spoke with series creator Emily Andras about crafting this very fine finale, at least one “happy accident” that wound up stirring many emotions, and more.

TVLINE | The finale has just aired…. What emotions do you hope the fans are feeling at this moment?
Just head-to-toe body warmth, and love, and affection, and wistfulness…. And a little bit of bittersweetness. I feel like joy has to be paired with nostalgia, so I hope they’re feeling all the things. But hopefully not hungover!

Wynonna Earp Series FinaleTVLINE | At what point over the years did you ever envision Wynonna and Doc riding off into the sunset?
Ahhh! I almost never even let myself envision it, you know? It’s so funny —  when you start doing a show, you have all sorts of ideas about what pairings are going to rise to the top, who’s going to end up with whom, and one of the joys of Earp is that so many different things have happened. But those two characters have certainly earned the chance to try to be happy, whatever that means to them. I never knew that I would be allowed to end such a romantic pairing with the woman driving the motorcycle and the guy on the back.

TVLINE | I’m watching that final sequence and it almost feels alien, seeing the two of them head off into what I think of as “the real world.” But I also found that viscerally exciting, to see so much ahead for them.
That’s so lovely, thank you for saying that. I feel like having the world ahead of them and being such an unusual couple, I would love to see what happens next for them. I’m sure there will be lots of crazy sex and crazy arguments and crazy laughter. So, godspeed! Godspeed.

Wynonna Earp Series FinaleTVLINE | When throwing a season-ending wedding, what is Emily Andras’ marching order? “Above all else, this wedding has to be…”?
It has to honor to all of the characters — and by that, I mean it has to try to find a moment for every special pairing on the show, not just WayHaught. I think it’s important to pay due respect to how far Waverly and Doc have come; she never gave up on him, she always saw a better man in him — and now he gets to be the best man! Nedley (Greg Lawson) and Nicole’s (Kat Barrell) relationship, that paternal/daughter bond is so special, so honoring that was very important.

And at the end of the day, I still think the real love affair of the show is the Earp sisters, so I ended to make sure that that was honored. I really love the parallel with the pilot, where Wynonna came into town against her will and was so hungry to leave but was forced to stay. And now you have Waverly secure enough in how their relationship has evolved, that she knows Wynonna deserves to leave again — because she’ll come back.

More than anything, it was about giving every character a moment of happiness. Even Jeremy (Varun Saranga) becoming deputy chief of Black Badge and maybe finding a new date…. It was all about finding everyone a moment of potential joy, after they’ve gone through so much after four seasons.

TVLINE | Talk about the decision to have empty guest chairs laid out with the names of those who are no longer with us or didn’t make it to the wedding.
That was such a happy accident. We were on-set, it was very much in the middle of the pandemic, and we knew we were going to have a limited number of people for the wedding. But then we put out chairs so you could understand where the aisle was, and they looked really empty. So my incredible director, Paolo Barzman, who also did the pilot, and my art director Trevor Smith, pitched this idea to me. I had sort of joked about, “Wouldn’t it be cool if you had the ghosts of characters past?” In the moment, they said, “What if we hung names on the chairs?” and it was just one of those goosebump moments, like, “That’s brilliant.” So then we have people writing up these cards, rushing them out, and it’s honestly one of my favorite things. Whenever I see that Dolls chair, I just can’t help but feel things.

TVLINE | But Mercedes (Dani Kind), to be clear, is still with us. She’s just out, like, being her best vampire self.
She’s out being an amazing vampire, yeah. I still have that spinoff if you want to help me sell that!

TVLINE | If anything caught me a bit off-guard, it was us getting a song from Rachel (played by Martina Ortiz-Luis).
The thing about Martina is that she is a phenomenal singer. She is the anthem singer for the Toronto Maple Leafs — so she’s quite a star here! — and she was on Pilipinas Got Talent back in the day…. It seemed like a waste to not have someone with such an exceptional voice perform! And what better song to lay over the necessary wedding montage than a WayHaught classic (Fleurie’s “Wildwood”), the song that was playing the first time WayHaught kissed. It’s a bit of an Easter egg for those hardcore WayHaughters!

TVLINE | I don’t think anyone would have ever felt like a “Dark Angel Waverly” detour was missing, if you hadn’t spent time on it the episode prior. Why did you feel it was important to go there during one of the final hours?
The truth of it is that honestly we’ve been balancing the spectre of whether we were going to have a Season 5 or not. When we started breaking Season 4 two years ago, we were looking down the barrel of about 24 episodes, so [when you get half that] you’re like, “What are we going to keep, and what are we going to pitch overboard? What can we live without learning about?” I would argue that this idea of Waverly having a darkness inside of her did have to be highlighted after four seasons. I completely agree that in a perfect world I could have done eight episodes of Dark Angel Waverly, exploring that and seeing it come to pass. But if we ever get more story, I don’t know if Waverly has complete control over that part of herself. I dont think it’s “gone.” If Nicole puts mayo instead of mustard on her sandwich, who knows what’s going to sprout out!

TVLINE | I mean, if only to see what other outfits Dark Waverly has.
As long as she keeps her thigh holster, she’s ready to go.

TVLINE | Looking back at these last few episodes, what are you most proud of?
‘m so proud of this cast. It’s so boring, but God, just to see them grow and thrive and shine…. performing comedy and emotion, seeing their commitment to the show, and the feelings…. It’s just been such a joy to see such an amazing group of people get their due. They really are that wonderful, off-screen as well.

I’m also pretty happy — in this day and age, and despite all the fights the show has been through — that if this is the end, I feel like that’s a pretty nice finale, a pretty good topper on the cake. I feel like the fans will feel like they went on a journey, and they left the characters in an interesting, good place. And look, that’s really rare in TV, to end your story the way you want. How can I be anything but grateful, at the end of the day?

TVLINE | When I was writing my tweet the other morning, I wanted to call it a “very fine finale,” but I worried you’d think I was saying it was only “fine.” But it was a very fine finale!
No, you have to keep me hungry! You get to challenge me, Matt. Listen, I just didn’t want to risk…. I’m the queen of 75 cliffhangers, but I feel like the fans have worked so hard for us, for so many years, that it was more important that they got closure, just in case. But there’s always another demon, there’s always another thing to trigger Dark Angel Waverly. There’s always more story, but at least you have this, no matter what.

TVLINE | And if some network or streamer does ride to the rescue, would there be something that brings Wynonna and Doc back to Purgatory? Or might a Season 5 be without the two of them?
Look, the show is called Wynonna Earp, so you need Wynonna Earp. She’s still the champion, she’s still got the magic gun and the best hair on the show — sorry, everyone else!

There are a couple of unresolved issues. We still have Eve, who we kicked out the the Garden very early in the season, and who can kind of shapeshift; she could take on the appearance of any one of our characters! That would certainly throw a wrench in the works in Purgatory. There are a million different reasons to bring Wynonna back, to help out her sister.

TVLINE | And lastly, was there anything you had to cut or just didn’t have room for, or any returning cast you couldn’t fit in?
Oh, tons. But look, you kind of hit the nail on the head earlier. I’m always striving to be better, and some stuff at the end felt a little rushed, with Dark Angel Waverly. I think if it hadn’t been a pandemic, there would have been more people at that wedding. I would have loved four more episodes to round the bend there. But look, that’s Wynonna Earp, man — perfectly imperfect! So that’s what we did, and what a ride it’s been. The ride of a lifetime for me.

Wynonna Earp to End Syfy Run With Back Half of Season 4 — Get Premiere Date for Final 6 Episodes https://briefnews.eu/wynonna-earp-to-end-syfy-run-with-back-half-of-season-4-get-premiere-date-for-final-6-episodes/ https://briefnews.eu/wynonna-earp-to-end-syfy-run-with-back-half-of-season-4-get-premiere-date-for-final-6-episodes/#respond Fri, 05 Feb 2021 21:12:42 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/wynonna-earp-to-end-syfy-run-with-back-half-of-season-4-get-premiere-date-for-final-6-episodes/

It’s last call at Shorty’s, so get ready to let your freak flag fly free one last time.

Wynonna Earp will end its Syfy run with the back half of Season 4, it was officially announced on Friday — and those final six episodes will premiere on Friday, March 5 at 10/9c.

As such, the series finale will land on Friday, April 9 — almost five years to the day of its debut.

“I’d like to thank our wonderful cast and crew, all of whom were instrumental in bringing Wynonna Earp to our loyal and passionate audience,” series creator/showrunner Emily Andras said in a statement. “We couldn’t be prouder of these last six episodes on Syfy, and are thrilled to share them with our beloved fans, who have changed our lives forever. I have been honored to tell Wynonna and her family’s story, and along with Seven24, Cineflix and CTV Sci-Fi, are hopeful we can continue to share their inspiring tales in the future.”

The supernatural drama’s long-term future has been in flux for almost two years, ever since production on Season 4 was delayed due to financial challenges on producer IDW Entertainment’s part. Ultimately, Cineflix Studios came aboard to co-produce Season 4 (in trade for handling international sales of the series), and production resumed on the 12-episode fourth season, which aired in two halves.

Despite now pulling modest numbers (Season 4A averaged 320,000 total viewers and shy of a 0.2 demo rating in LIve+Same Day numbers), Wynonna Earp is a two-time People’s Choice Award winner for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show and, more significantly, a four-time GLAAD Award nominee for Outstanding Drama Series (due to its liberal representation of LGBTQ characters/relationships).

Can Peacemaker hit the proverbial bull’s-eye, with just six episodes to go and at least one major mess clean up? (Wynonna and Doc broke up in the midseason finale, after she dishonorably shot the Clayton clan’s Sheriff Holt in the back.)

Tim Rozon, who plays Doc Holliday, seemed to give fans hope of a satisfying ending to Season 4, telling TVLine, “This fandom is the most incredible fandom, built on kindness and acceptance…. It’s an incredible thing to be a part of, and this season is the season that fandom deserves.”

RELATED STORIES

As Part 1 of Wynonna Earp‘s midseason finale came to a close, Nicole had been drowned and Jeremy was asking a gobsmacked Waverly to trust in what he and Nedley were doing to her partner. So… should she (and we) cut Jeremy some slack?

“I think we should trust Jeremy, and trust Nicole’s posse,” the ex-sheriff’s portrayer, Kat Barrell, told TVLine on Friday evening, in between shooting scenes for Season 4’s very final episodes. “These guys have gone through a lot together, and I can’t see them letting her down. They will definitely try everything they can!”

The drowning is in fact “Plan B” in trying to undo the hex cast on Nicole by Mam Clanton, after Jeremy’s attempt to craft an elixir literally went down the drain. But once the full and wild scope of Jeremy and Nedley’s scheme is detailed, viewers like Waverly may be wondering, “What the frog?!”

Wynonna Earp - Season 4“It’s amazing to watch the gang fight to honor her wishes, because she did ask Jeremy to essentially perform this spell to undo whatever horrible thing that she is obviously hiding from everyone. So we get a bit more information on that,” Barrell previews. And as for Jeremy running this death-defying show, “It’s amazing to see that even though he and Nicole had been parted for so long, and even though there was a lot of hurt there, at the end of the day she still really trusts him, literally, with her life.”

What exactly happens next when the Syfy series’ midseason finale picks up this Sunday at 10/9 “is going to be quite crazy,” Barrell shares. “I will say that we see a whole new ‘side’ of Nicole that is very unexpected. A new version of her, I’ll say.”

Wynonna Earp - Season 4Wynonna and Doc, meanwhile, have unexpectedly run into Rosita Bustillos (returning guest star Tamara Duarte) aka The Woman Scorned in the creepy nuns’ painting. As Wynonna follows through on the plan to trade Rosita for her beloved Peacemaker, Doc — coming out of his old-timey newsreel “reunion” with Wyatt Earp — will consider a bold step in the name of burying a very old axe.

“The cool thing that I love about this next episode is that Doc is trying to let go of the past,” Tim Rozon, who plays Holliday, tells TVLine. “We saw that in Episode 5, when he hears Wyatt talking about Doc and he says, ‘That’s not the way it really went down….’ He’s starting to realize that he’s holding onto the past and he needs to let go, and that starts with someone having to forgive. Doc realizes that fighting just isn’t the way anymore.”

But will the Clanton clan, led by the viciously vengeful Mam and including Sheriff Holt and his sister Cleo among its ranks, see things the same way? Or is there an even more unpredictable threat to Doc’s noble agenda?

One thing is for certain: As all of the above storylines reach major turning points in the midseason finale’s closing scenes, Earpers will in turn experience an array of emotions.

“Me trying to explain what people are going to be going through in the last minutes… It would be impossible to guess,” Rozon says with a chuckle. “Utter joy. Elation. And then at the same time, sadness. And heartbreak. But also happiness and love!

“But pretty much love,” he asserts, “because I think love encompasses all those emotions at one time, sometimes. There’s a lot of love — the good and the bad that comes with it — going on.”

Following the midseason finale, Wynonna Earp will return with Season 4’s second six episodes sometime in 2021.

RELATED STORIES

For its season-opening trip to the Garden of Eden, Syfy’s Wynonna Earp gave the iconic location the cold shoulder — foregoing flora and fauna for a frigid tundra that seemingly stretched to the horizon.

“It was literally called Blizzard Lake — a body of water that had frozen,” series lead Melanie Scrofano told TVLine of the location shoot at Albertina Farms, south of Calgary, which spanned the season’s first two episodes. “So every time I ran on it, I was, like, listening for cracks, you know? I was so scared!”

The lake literally lived up to its name when, for the climactic moment in which Wynonna, Doc and Waverly scrambled to find an exit, a blizzard blasted the screen, amping up the end-of-world excitement.

“Oh, my God, the timing was incredible,” Scrofano raved. “We had actually shot that sequence and then we had to turn around [the cameras], and then it f–ing starts to blizzard and we’re like, ‘Well, this doesn’t match.’ So then we had to go back and shoot the first part again. But it was incredible because thematically it felt like the Garden was trying to work its magic on us. It was the type of thing you cannot plan and you cannot buy.”

Wynonna Earp Frozen LakeAlas, no magic was on hand to keep the cast anything close to warm as they filmed on a frozen lake. Now in its fourth season of production in Alberta, Canada, “It was the most excruciatingly painful cold I think we had experienced on the show,” Scrofano shared.

Storyline-wise, though the Garden’s chills and thrills may be behind them, Wynonna and Doc (played by Tom Rozon) returned home to find that life in Purgatory took a gnarly turn for the lawless during their fast-passing 18-plus months in that other realm. What will be their first step in processing this new world order?

“I think it’s safe to say alcohol,” Scrofano deadpanned. “I’m sort of joking, but I’m sort of serious.” Then turning decidedly serious, she offered that “Wynonna doesn’t have her [supernaturally powered] gun, but now she has Doc — and now he has her — so just to know that each other are safe, I think, will give them both strength to face whatever is coming up.”

RELATED STORIES

The following contains major spoilers from the Aug. 2 episode of Syfy’s Wynonna Earp.

Wynonna Earp this week located Waverly and Doc and escaped the Garden of Eden, but life proved to be thorny in a different and most unexpected way upon the trio’s return to Purgatory.

Coming out of the season premiere, Waverly herself laid eyes on a buck-naked Nicole inside the Garden, only to eventually realize that she and Doc were actually dealing with a manipulative, shape-shifting Eve, who was plotting to use then to finagle her escape. The real Nicole, meanwhile, was nursing a very busted leg after her tumble inside the zombified scientist-infected BBD lab. As such, she had to stay behind, in Rachel Valdez’s care, as Wynonna leaped into the interdimensional portal that Dr. Gloria Valdez had created then died trying to keep shut. Wynonna landed at the Garden’s arctic topside, where both she and Doc fell prey to more of Eve’s shape-shifting hijinx.

After Doc drop-kicked Eve into a portal and Wynonna convinced Waverly not to spend eternity on her father’s throne protecting the Garden, the trio found/used another portal and each landed in a different spot in Purgatory. Waverly found the true Nicole and enjoyed a passionate reunion, while Wynonna and Doc came to witness that all is not well in their hometown. We and Waverly then learned from Nicole just how long the gang’s brief visit to the Garden actually lasted — 18 months, three weeks and four days!

TVLine jumped on the phone with showrunner Emily Andras to talk about the time jump, the “new” Purgatory and giving “WayHaught” fans some well-earned romance.

TVLINE | So Wynonna, Doc and Waverly just made their way back to Purgatory, and Waverly reunited with Nicole—
Did she ever!

TVLINE | —only to later realize that more than 18 months passed while she was in the Garden. How do you decide what is long enough, and how much would have been too long a period of time?
I think we wanted it to be long enough to realize that the characters will have changed, and we will be really intrigued by what the ones who have been left behind have been through, what they’ve had to do to survive, how they coped without their friends. But at the same time, we didn’t want it to start feeling like a May-December romance. Like, 40 years probably would have been too much.

TVLINE | Even three, you’d be like, “Aww, man, Nicole went three years without Waverly? That’s sad.”
Yeah. I feel like we wanted to be mean, but like Wynonna Earp-mean. You understand it, but you’re not devastated. Anything over a year, I feel like that’s when people start to get really weird, if people I loved were gone for over a year. There’s something about 18 months — you understand that for the people left behind, they would have started to wonder if this was their new reality and they had to make a new go at their lives.

Wynonna Earp 4x03

A scene from ‘Wynonna Earp’ Season 4, Episode 3

TVLINE | Let’s talk about this new reality. Wynonna and Doc got at least one visual hint about what’s going on. How would you sum up what all has changed?
I would say that Purgatory is back to a traditional Western town. When you think about Deadwood or a spaghetti Western, you think about how the laws work a bit differently, how it’s a bit more ruthless. We see bodies hanging in the streets of downtown Purgatory. There’s a sense that without Wynonna as the whiskey-soaked, I-guess-“cop” in town, things have maybe gone a little darker, a little grittier. Law and order and justice mean something different now in Purgatory.

TVLINE | Which of the characters that were left behind changed most?
I would say there’s no doubt that Nicole has been through a lot…. We still don’t know what happened to a couple characters, like Jeremy and Robin. and we don’t know the fate of poor Nedley, who was injured the last time we saw him. And he was left with Mercedes “I was a slutty nurse once for Halloween” Gardner.

TVLINE | “Once.”
[Laughs] Sure, “once.” But hey, man, you go in with the help you’ve got, and that’s who he had, so I don’t know if I would put his odds super-high. To be honest, there’s definitely some trauma and some sadness and some consequences in the next episode, that our characters are really thrust into. What are this gulf of time and space going to mean between loved and friends and family…? Stay tuned.

TVLINE | Are we done with Eve?
I dunno, are you ever done with anything on this show? She got kicked out a door, so I feel like she’s not right up in our grill, but….. You never know!

Wynonna Earp - Season 4TVLINE | I’ve already seen a couple of fans, working off of not-entirely subtle tweets by some of the people who saw screeners, worrying that it’s not really Nicole that Waverly reunited with. Are you able to set the record straight that it’s definitely Nicole?
Yes, definitely. I would definitely want that, especially with issues of consent. I promise that it was consensual and beautiful and you can enjoy it. I would say you don’t have to worry about Eve right now, for sure. Plus, I trust Waverly’s judgement. She knew the second she kissed Eve in the Garden that it wasnt Nicole, she just knew.

TVLINE | Lastly, talk about that WayHaught love scene. There is admittedly much LGBTQ content out there that I have never seen, but it seemed to be pretty significant in the scheme of things.
I would like to think so. I certainly think there were some incredible, brave shows and souls that paved the way, and I was lucky enough to be on Lost Girl, which had a bisexual lead and we did all sorts of things as far as sex scenes. But I am extraordinarily proud of that [WayHaught] scene, and I feel like it’s so earned four seasons in — for the characters, but also for the fandom. What a celebration! What a hungry, passionate, desperate, telling, sensual and romantic reunion for a queer couple, for a female-female couple! It speaks to the trust that Dominique [Provost-Chalkley] and Kat [Barrell] have with us. It was all very carefully choreographed and discussed, but it’s so important to everyone involved to get it right.

I do think it’s something you see with heterosexual couples a little more often, to say the least.

TVLINE | With queer couples, you get a kiss but there’s always, like, a hand in the way—
[Laughs] Or it’s badly lit. I was watching the lighting on this like a hawk, because a common, hilarious complaint of LGBTQ fans is, “I think they kissed… or they were sharing a sandwich.”

TVLINE | Or, “Look, a flood light is suddenly mounted behind them blowing everything out!”
Exactly. We really were all quite determined that we were going to take it as far as we could. And to Syfy’s credit, they were so immensely supportive. That’s the benefit, too, of being 10 pm cable. And again, Dom and Kat had complete approval of the scene, and they are very comfortable with each other, and with our director…. I just want the LGBTQ Earpers to be able to celebrate it and love it and just really be in the moment. But I also want anyone who’s straight and believes in love to see this beautiful love scene, between two people who are maybe destined to be together. I hope that everybody can enjoy it, whatever your jam is, man.

TVLINE | Does that scene look different in your old time slot?
Yes, I would say so. I would say that scene looks different four years ago. But again, I feel like it speaks to the strides we’ve all made and what is acceptable. And for me personally, I would say that because of the things that are important in my own storytelling and what I have based a lot of my career on pushing for, that is one that I thought was worth fighting for. So I hope anyone notices it. We’ll see!

Wynonna Earp Renewed for Season 4 https://briefnews.eu/wynonna-earp-renewed-for-season-4/ https://briefnews.eu/wynonna-earp-renewed-for-season-4/#respond Sun, 22 Jul 2018 13:03:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wynonna-earp-renewed-for-season-4/

Well, that was quick: Syfy has renewed Wynonna Earp for Season 4, just one day after the launch of Season 3. The good news was first shared on Saturday during the show’s annual panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Melanie Scrofano plays the title character in Wynonna Earp, which is adapted from the comic book created by Beau Smith. Season 4 will consist of 10 episodes and premiere in 2019.

“We are absolutely delighted that Wynonna Earp has been renewed for a fourth season,” series creator Emily Andras said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We are so grateful to Syfy for their relentless and ferocious support of the series and the ‘Earper’ fandom.”
