Japanese billionaire and clothing retail tycoon Yusaku Maezawa has clinched the top spot for most retweeted tweet of all time, using the tried and trusted ‘free cash’ method.

The eccentric founder of Zozo Inc., originally a drummer in a punk band, promised to give out 100 million yen ($ 925,000) in cash prizes to a lucky 100 participants in his Twitter lottery, which he launched ostensibly in celebration of his company’s successful spring sale. The promotion will see Maezawa give away a total of 10 billion yen ($ 92 million).

“Zozotown Spring Sale is the fastest in history and topped 10 billion yen!! With a daily appreciation, I will give 100 million yen (total of gifts million yen) in cash. The only way to apply is to follow me and RT this tweet. The reception is up to 1/7. I will direct DM from me to the winner!”

Maezawa found fortune in fashion, accumulating an estimated personal wealth of $ 3 billion. He will be the first private passenger to be flown around the moon by SpaceX some time in 2023 and plans to bring a group of artists with him.

He is also the owner of several original Picassos, Bugattis, as well as a 1717 Stradivarius violin. The billionaire tweeted a photo of a man riding a rocket in an homage to the wildly popular Steven Spielberg film ET to accompany the unexpected giveaway. His followers surged from just over 500,000 to over 4.27 million in the wake of the most viral of tweets.

Not missing a beat, electronics company Sharp seized the viral moment to make their own, tongue-in-cheek tweet off the back of Maezawa’s giveaway.

“With our gratitude, we would be grateful if many more than 100 people could buy ¥1 million of products (totalling ¥10 billion). The application method doesn’t involve having to RT or follow us, you can just buy it from any store. Taking applications forever.”

Chicken supreme: #NuggsForCarter rules roost, beats Ellen’s retweet record

Maezawa’s January 5 tweet has become the most retweeted of all time, beating stiff competition from US teenager Carter Wilkinson, who launched the viral 2017 “Nuggs for Carter” campaign to get a year’s free chicken nuggets from fast-food chain Wendy’s.

“18 million,” the fast-food company wryly responded to Wilkinson’s query. While Wilkinson fell well short of the spoof goal, managing to garner a still-impressive 3.5 million retweets, Wendy’s decided to give him the free chicken anyway, presumably in thanks for all the publicity.

Before Wilkinson, the leading tweet was actor and presenter Ellen DeGeneres’ viral selfie with Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie from the 2014 Academy Awards.

Price earns shutout in return, while Canucks lose Pettersson to injury https://briefnews.eu/price-earns-shutout-in-return-while-canucks-lose-pettersson-to-injury/ https://briefnews.eu/price-earns-shutout-in-return-while-canucks-lose-pettersson-to-injury/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 03:43:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/price-earns-shutout-in-return-while-canucks-lose-pettersson-to-injury/

Carey Price returned from injury to make 33 saves and lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.

Price picked up his second shutout of the season in his first appearance after missing the last three games with a lower-body injury.

It was a tough night for the Canucks after losing rookie Elias Pettersson to a lower-body injury in the second period.

Pettersson, who was named an All-Star Wednesday, was injured after getting tangled with fellow rookie and Habs forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Pettersson's right knee was caught between Kotkaniemi's legs as they both fell to the ice. The Swede stayed down on the ice before getting to his feet and going to the dressing room. He would not return to the game.

Jordie Benn and Jonathan Drouin supplied the Montreal (22-14-5) offence.

Joel Armia also returned to the Canadiens lineup after missing the last 25 games due to a knee injury. The Finn also picked up an assist in his return.

Pettersson had a breakaway opportunity, but the Swede slid into the post and failed to get a shot on Price as the game stayed scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game.

Benn opened the scoring with his third goal of the season at 11:50 of the first.

Minutes after Pettersson's injury, Drouin scored his team's second of the night as he burst up the wing for his 13th of the season.

The Canadiens will play against the Nashville Predators Saturday at Bell Centre, while the Canucks wrap up a six-game road trip against the Toronto Maple Leafs the same night.

De Minaur loses but earns big pay day https://briefnews.eu/de-minaur-loses-but-earns-big-pay-day/ https://briefnews.eu/de-minaur-loses-but-earns-big-pay-day/#respond Sun, 11 Nov 2018 01:41:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/de-minaur-loses-but-earns-big-pay-day/ Alex de Minaur has claimed the biggest pay cheque of his burgeoning career despite losing the Next Gen Finals’ decider to Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Bidding to emulate Korean Hyeon Chung’s victory last year in the glamour Milan event, de Minaur’s unbeaten run came an end with a 4-2 1-4 3-4 (3-5) 3-4 (3-5) loss to world No 15 Ttisipas.

De Minaur, 19, earned $ 429,000 for the week. The figure is comprised of a participation fee and payments for each of his four victories, plus a runners-up bonus.

The event is restricted to players aged 21-and-under and is decided on a Fast4 format.

De Minaur finishes the season ranked No 31 and Australia’s No 1 male ahead of John Millman (33), Nick Kyrgios (37) and Matt Ebden (41).

Tsitipas lauded de Minaur post-match.

“I have huge respect for Alex’s game and his personality,” he said.

“It is a huge thrill to win this title and it was a tough match.

“Alex played really well.”

De Minaur will now take a well deserved break before preparing for the Australian summer circuit.

The teenager will come under immediate rankings pressure as he bids to defend runs to the Brisbane semi-finals and Sydney final.

De Minaur and Ash Barty are the favourites to win the John Newcombe medal this month after impressive seasons.

Millman, Ebden and Jason Kubler are also in the mix after outstanding comeback efforts.

Millman was Australia’s best grand slam performer for the season with a run to the US Open quarter-finals after downing Roger Federer at Flushing Meadows.

Shallon Olsen captured Canada's first medal of the world gymnastics championships on Friday in in Doha, Qatar.

The 18-year-old from Surrey, B.C. earned a silver medal in the vault final.

American star Simone Biles made more history by winning gold on Friday, becoming the first gymnast to capture 13 world titles.

On Thursday, Biles became the first woman to win four world all-around championships.

Mexico's Alexa Moreno earned the bronze medal.

Olsen qualified for the final in second behind Biles and delivered two solid vaults to win silver with a total score of 14.516. Biles easily took top spot at 15.366, with Moreno finishing at 14.508.

"This is absolutely insane," said Olsen, who was the gold medallist on the vault at the 2018 Commonwealth Games this past April "I did not think I was going to come second behind Simone Biles, because she's literally amazing. I'm just really happy and ecstatic right now."

Osuna earns save in return to Rogers Centre as Astros edge Jays https://briefnews.eu/osuna-earns-save-in-return-to-rogers-centre-as-astros-edge-jays/ https://briefnews.eu/osuna-earns-save-in-return-to-rogers-centre-as-astros-edge-jays/#respond Tue, 25 Sep 2018 05:34:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/osuna-earns-save-in-return-to-rogers-centre-as-astros-edge-jays/ If Monday's game marked the last for Marco Estrada in a Blue Jays uniform, he wasn't pleased with how it ended.

Estrada, who'll become a free agent at the end of the season, allowed four runs on seven hits — including two solo homers — as the Blue Jays fell 5-3 to the Houston Astros to open their final home series of the year.

"It's the worst year I've had," said Estrada, who dropped to 7-14 with the loss. "These last months, it's sucked. It's not the way I wanted to go out.

"I wanted to pitch better for Toronto and unfortunately I didn't. It is what it is. All I can say is I was out there every five days and I gave it [my] all."

Former Toronto closer Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth inning in his return to Rogers Centre, striking out a batter and working around a one-out single to earn his 19th save of the season.

Watch Osuna record his 19th save of the season:

Osuna, making his first appearance in Toronto since being traded, recorded his 10th straight save in the Astros 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. 2:05

Osuna, who was arrested in May and charged in connection with an alleged domestic incident, was met with a chorus of boos from the 23,463 fans when he was announced into the game — and as he threw each pitch.

'It is what it is'

The 23-year-old right-hander was suspended without pay for 75 games in June for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy and traded to Houston at the deadline a month later.

Estrada didn't want to talk about Osuna or his reception after the game.

"No, I don't know. It is what it is," Estrada said.

Osuna declined to speak to reporters after the game on the advice of his lawyer.

"I think he wanted the ball like he always does," said Houston manager A.J. Hinch. "I'm sure it was emotional for him.

"It was pretty expected."

Osuna's court case is scheduled to continue Tuesday in Toronto.

Some of Osuna's former teammates greeted him on the field during batting practice with hugs and handshakes. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said it was "real weird" to see Osuna in another uniform.

Mixed emotions

"Kind of mixed emotions but I knew there was a good chance he was probably going to get [the save]. I've seen him do it too many times."

Brian McCann and Josh Reddick homered for the Astros (99-57). Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, and Yuli Gurriel, in his first pro game against his brother and Toronto shortstop Lourdes Gurriel Jr., also drove in runs.

The brotherly matchup didn't last long — Lourdes left the game with left hamstring tightness after grounding into a double play in the first inning.

Dallas Keuchel (12-11) allowed three runs and seven hits while walking three and striking out five over five innings.

Estrada, who's winless in his last six starts, lasted just 4 2/3 innings and also had a walk and a strikeout. He received an ovation from the crowd when he was pulled from the game in the fifth with two runners on base.

"I don't know what's going to happen next year but I gave [the fans] a quick thank you," Estrada said. "They've always been behind me, they're the greatest fans ever. How can I not be thankful?

"Hopefully it's not my last [start] here but if it is I'm thankful for everything the fans have given me, for their support. I love it here, I love Toronto and I love the fans."

Gibbons said his timing of pulling Estrada "had nothing to do with" wanting to give him a chance to salute the crowd.

"We had the lefties coming up and the game could have swung there with two guys on base," he said. "I'm sentimental but not that sentimental."

Pillar, Solarte get Jays on the board

Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays (71-86) and Yangervis Solarte drove in a run.

Yuli Gurriel plated the first run in the first inning, extending his hit streak to 10 games with an RBI single, and Houston hit back-to-back solo shots in the second inning to bring the lead to 3-0.

Bregman's double put the Astros up 4-0 in the third, but Pillar replied with a two-run shot in the fourth, sending the ball into the left-field seats to halve the deficit.

The Jays tacked on another run in the fifth but failed to take full advantage of a bases-loaded situation with no outs. Keuchel, hindered by a throwing error from J.D. Davis at third, loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before Solarte's run-scoring hit. But Justin Smoak struck out on a borderline pitch with a full count, Randal Grichuk grounded out and Pillar went down swinging to end the frame.

Altuve hit an RBI single off Joe Biagini in the ninth.

BBC presenter Dan Walker bemoans licence payers knowing what he earns https://briefnews.eu/bbc-presenter-dan-walker-bemoans-licence-payers-knowing-what-he-earns/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-presenter-dan-walker-bemoans-licence-payers-knowing-what-he-earns/#respond Tue, 11 Sep 2018 14:59:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-presenter-dan-walker-bemoans-licence-payers-knowing-what-he-earns/

The TV host was revealed to earn between £220,000 and £229,999 for his roles on BBC Breakfast and Football Focus.

The 41-year-old is also set to front a new gameshow for the corporation, titled Chase The Case.

Walker said working for the BBC is “brilliant” but admitted having his salary released to the public was uncomfortable.

He said: “I totally understand the way that the BBC works and I can appreciate the pressure that they’re under, and the licence fee is under more scrutiny than it’s ever been under.

“I still think working for the BBC is brilliant and the BBC are a fantastic organisation, and they provide value for money. But I’d be lying if I told you it’s not awkward for people to know how much you earn.”

When the list of the BBC’s top earners was released in July, it emerged the top 10 was dominated by men, with Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker overtaking DJ Chris Evans at the top.

Former England international footballer Lineker takes home between £1.75 million and £1,759,999.

Walker’s breakfast show co-host, Louise Minchin, did not make the list, which only contains stars earning more than £150,000 in 2017/18.

Walker, 41, said he is paid the same as Minchin for the BBC Breakfast job and he only made the list because he has two jobs.

He said: “I do think it’s important to say as well that, I’m proud of the fact that we do have equal pay at BBC Breakfast, I’ve always earned the same amounts as Louise, whatever the various papers have said.

“The reason I’m higher up the [pay] list is because I’ve got two jobs. So I think that’s really important and that’s something which is important to me, it’s as important to me as it is to Louise and Naga [Munchetty, another BBC Breakfast host] and the others.

“There’s still work to be done across the BBC. But they are trying their best to address it, and you’re right to bring it up, because it is an important issue.”

Walker, a father of three, added he wanted his two daughters to, “grow up in a world where they’re valued for the work they put in in the same way that a man is. I think that’s important”.

• Chase The Case starts on BBC One from Monday, September 17.

Claudia Winkleman net worth: Strictly Come Dancing presenter earns this massive salary https://briefnews.eu/claudia-winkleman-net-worth-strictly-come-dancing-presenter-earns-this-massive-salary/ https://briefnews.eu/claudia-winkleman-net-worth-strictly-come-dancing-presenter-earns-this-massive-salary/#respond Sat, 08 Sep 2018 15:48:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/claudia-winkleman-net-worth-strictly-come-dancing-presenter-earns-this-massive-salary/

Claudia Winkleman, 46, is one of the most recognisable faces on British television, being a presenter, model, critic and journalist.

The star is also the co-host of Strictly Come Dancing, bursting back onto television screens tonight for the 2018 series.

Claudia is hosting the show alongside Tess Daly, a role that she has had since 2012 when Bruce Forsyth sadly passed away.

All set for the 2018 series of Strictly, how much is Claudia Winkleman actually worth?

For the last two years, the London-born star was the BBC’s highest-paid female, bringing in a staggering £450,000-£499,999 salary in 2016-2017.

The highest paid male on the list was Chris Evans, who earned £2.2 million a year – four times as much as the highest-paid woman, Claudia.

Due to media scrutiny over the BBC’s “talent list”, Claudia and other BBC talents took a pay cut, with her salary dropping to £370,000-£379,999 – still an impressive amount.

According to CelebrityNetWorth.com, Claudia now has a whopping net worth of around $ 12 million (£9 million).

The majority of her income is from her role as presenter on Strictly Come Dancing, but she also hosts the BBC Radio 2 Show, Claudia on Sunday.

Bumping up her income, Claudia also reportedly receives £75,000 for her Sunday Times Style Magazine column.

Putting her substantial earnings to good use, Claudia lives in the highly-sought after area of Bayswater in London.

The 46-year-old lives with her film producer husband, Kris Thykier, and their three children Jake, 14, Matilda, eight and Arthur, six.

But Claudia has worked hard for her big paycheque, starting her career almost 30 years ago when she presented on the regional discussion programme, Central Weekend.

In 1992 she landed the role that would see her through to the late nineties, appearing on the BBC series, Holiday.

Following that Claudia gained her first day-time role as a host on the BBC Three show Liquid news.

Since then, Claudia has become one of the most well-known presenters in the country, presented Fame Academy and Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two.

In 2014 she was announced as the new co-host for the 12th series of Strictly Come Dancing, joining show stalwart, Tess Daly.

Another presenter who is appearing on Strictly Come Dancing tonight, but as a contestant, is Katie Piper.

Katie has created a successful career after being the victim of an acid attack which left her blind in one eye.

She was announced as the first contestant for the 2018 series of the show, but what is her net worth?

Future’s new album, Beastmode 2, is now the highest-charting streaming-only album, Billboard reports, debuting at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 200. With this album, Future has dethroned Chance the Rapper, whose Coloring Book became the first streaming-exclusive album to chart on the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 8. Coloring Book also went on to earn Chance the Rapper the first Grammy awarded for a streaming-only album.

Beastmode 2 charted with 57,000 equivalent album units earned through 73.5 million on-demand audio streams. The Billboard 200 chart began taking streaming data into account in 2014 and last month, Billboard began weighting streams from subscription services more heavily than those from free and ad-supported services for its Hot 100 songs and Hot 200 albums charts.

Beastmode 2 is Future’s ninth album to reach the Billboard 200 top 10.

Brendan Bottcher earns No. 1 seed as Brier moves into championship pool https://briefnews.eu/brendan-bottcher-earns-no-1-seed-as-brier-moves-into-championship-pool/ https://briefnews.eu/brendan-bottcher-earns-no-1-seed-as-brier-moves-into-championship-pool/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 05:50:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brendan-bottcher-earns-no-1-seed-as-brier-moves-into-championship-pool/

Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher has put his rink in great position heading into the Championship Pool at the Tim Hortons Brier.

Bottcher finished the final day of round-robin play at the Canadian men’s curling championship with a 9-2 win over Wild Card Mike McEwen on Wednesday to earn the No. 1 seed entering the next round of play.

Bottcher’s rink forced McEwen’s squad to concede in eight ends.

“We’re just making all the simple shots really well. We’re making the other team play harder shots than we’re playing and that’s working out for us,” said the Edmonton-based skip.

Alberta’s steal of two after a pick on McEwen’s last rock in the fourth end, alongside a five-point ender in the fifth, sealed the fate for the match.

“They were playing well at the time but we would have been ahead on the scoreboard, controlling the game, air kind of came out [of us],” said Winnipeg-based skip McEwen.

Chaos at the top

Bottcher, Brad Gushue’s Team Canada, Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs and Ontario’s John Epping all finished the round robin with 6-1 records, but the Alberta skip took the No. 1 seed in the Championship Pool after his Pool A win earlier in the day over Gushue.

McEwen dropped to 5-2 with the loss, but still moved on as the top four teams from two pools advance to the Championship Pool of eight. Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers also finished 5-2 to advance.

John Epping’s Team Ontario won their 6th straight game at the 2018 Brier, with an 8-4 win over Steve Laycock’s Team Saskatchewan.0:55

Newfoundland and Labrador was looking for its second win of the round-robin going up against Team Canada in the evening draw. Greg Smith of St. John’s, N.L., was able to force a few ends against the 2017 Brier champion, but fell 7-2 in eight.

Northwest Territories’ Jamie Koe was able to take control of the game offensively in an 8-2 win over Yukon’s Thomas Scoffin, who conceded in eight ends. Draw 14 was important for the Koe rink, which needed the win to improve its record to 3-4 and create a possible three-way tie for fourth spot coming out of Pool A.

But the do-or-die situation for Nova Scotia’s Jamie Murphy against B.C., in Draw 14 sealed the fate for Kelowna skip Sean Geall and Whitehorse’s Koe.

Nova Scotia edged B.C. 8-6 in ten ends, improving its record to 4-3 to advance.

Brendan Bottcher and Team Alberta took down Gushue’s undefeated Team Canada 10-7, to force a 3-way tie atop Pool A.0:37

Championship pool begins Thursday

The championship pool gets underway Thursday afternoon at the Brandt Centre in Regina.

Bottcher faces Steve Laycock of Saskatchewan, Gushue plays Carruthers, Jacobs is up against Murphy while McEwen plays Epping.

For McEwen, the goal is to go win three out of the four games ahead of them Thursday and Friday.

“Not much different than if we are looking at this in December and we would look at this line-up of teams,” he said. “We need to go 3-1 against that group and we’ve done that before.”

Bottcher feel his team is set up nicely moving forward.

“Against B.C., we were down four halfway through that game so this could be a lot different conversation had we not been able to turn that one around and that’s sort of been the momentum shift for us in the week.”
