Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has accused Donald Trump of intending to brush aside the killing of Jamal Khashoggi “no matter what” after the US president showed he’s still reluctant to cast a stone at Riyadh.

“He will turn a blind eye no matter what,” Cavusoglu told CNN Turk in an interview published Friday.

The diplomat was apparently reacting to the US leadership’s repeated refusal to assume that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman might have ordered the murder of the WaPo columnist. Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, but never came back… and was later confirmed to have been killed and dismembered there.

While at one point castigating Saudi Arabia over the gruesome murder of the journalist, Trump opted for a broader perspective on Thursday. The US president alleged that “the world should be held accountable” for the killing. He also dismissed the CIA’s assessment of the Saudi prince’s potential involvement in the case. Trump stated that the said document did not “conclude” that fact, but merely had “feelings” for it.

Trump has been under fire for flip-flopping over the major US ally in the Middle East. Both Democrats and Republicans lashed out at the president’s statements, accusing him of defending the Saudi “regime.”

Arsene Wenger has repeatedly suggested Alexis Sanchez, who has one year left to run on his contract, will not be sold this summer.

Manchester City have been continually linked with a move for the Chilean, with keen to reunite with the player, who he previously worked with at Barcelona.

The 28-year-old has so far been offered a new deal by the Gunners worth £280,000 a week, but he is seeking more.

Reports emerged last week suggesting he would get paid closer to £400,000 a week if he joined City.

And the Sunday Mirror claim Sanchez will push for a move to the Etihad.

The Mirror say he will hand in a formal transfer request in order to engineer a switch.

Sanchez was supposed to return for pre-season training today, but he is currently in his homeland recovering from flu.

The report also suggests the forward is genuinely ill and is not using under-hand tactics to get his dream move.

When quizzed about Sanchez’s future after the 5-2 Emirates Cup win over Benfica yesterday, Wenger said: “He has flu. I have spoken to him by text. 

“We have been in touch with him and his doctor. He will come back as soon as possible.

“There’s no development. He’s staying. Of course.”

Her pair of fourth-place finishes at last summer’s Olympic Games were covered nationally, told through the type of narrative often attached to the most excruciating place to finish in an Olympic final. Words such as “heartbreak” and “disappointment” were applied.

And in the year since Rio, competing in the dimmed light of a post-Olympic season, Abel has struggled to revive the mental focus so crucial to exploding off a diving board.

The Laval, Que., native is one of 11 Canadian divers, including three-time Olympic medallist Meaghan Benfeito, who will compete at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where diving competition runs July 14-22 (CBCSports.ca will stream live action beginning Saturday, July 15).

The world championships are the 2017 version of the Olympics — the biggest meet of the year, highly competitive, and an opportunity to either repeat, or turn the page on, what happened last summer.

‘Painful’ result

At Rio 2016, Abel and her teammate Pamela Ware finished fourth in the women’s synchronized three-metre springboard event, missing the bronze medal by less than a single point. 

One week later, Abel was fourth in the individual 3m event — five points off the podium.

“Only those who live that will understand that it’s much harder than just having a bad competition,” Abel says of finishing fourth. “It’s painful.”

During the fallout, Abel decided to continue diving because she simply couldn’t accept finishing her career like that.

“I don’t feel like I’ve reached my full potential,” she says.

Many times this diving season, at international events far from home, Abel searched for motivation and found little consolation. 

At the first two Diving World Series events (FINA’s major tour stops), the 25-year-old finished fourth in the individual springboard.

Coming to terms with missing a once-in-every-four-years chance (twice) while trying to measure up to flawless Chinese divers was demanding for Abel, and lonely.

“I have to be true to myself about my feelings about it because sometimes it’s hard to say the way that you feel,” she says.

“It’s hard to turn the page when everybody keeps talking about [the Olympics].”

It was difficult for Abel to articulate because few people can relate to the feeling of being fourth at the Olympics. At the same time, she’s still a young person, learning about the realities of life through the rare experience of world-class sport.

At the third Diving World Series stop, in early spring in Russia, Abel finally cracked the individual springboard podium, earning a bronze medal. 

“I almost cried when I was on the podium because I saw the two Chinese flags and the Canadian flag,” Abel said afterwards. “I was just thinking about the Olympics, like I was so close to being with those flags.”

Catching a break

Of course, Ware, Abel’s partner in the synchro event last year, also suffered the disappointment of finishing fourth in Rio.

The Greenfield Park, Que., diver’s path to Budapest took a dramatic turn when she stepped off a massage table in October of last year and found she couldn’t walk. 

A nagging stress fracture in her left foot had suddenly turned serious.

“It was just so random,” says the 24-year-old.

She had surgery in late December and only began training her competition dives again in March of this year, missing most of the competitive season.

Though the injury forced Abel to find another synchro teammate for the season, the extended post-Olympic break actually worked in Ware’s favour from an individual perspective.

“When I came back after surgery it was really easy to get back into diving,” says Ware. “I was able to clear my head, I was in great physical shape, so I think that was really good for me.”

Ware changed her hurdle — a diver’s approach to the end of the board — in an attempt to make it more consistent. So far, it seems to have worked. She won the gold medal at a Diving Grand Prix in Madrid, Spain in May.

The 2013 worlds medallist will have to step it up once again on July 20, when the women’s 3m springboard event begins in Budapest and she faces Abel and the rest of the world’s best.

Abel will also compete in the 3m synchro with Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu, who replaced Ware after her injury.

While Abel and Ware are no longer teammates (at least for the moment), they continue to share a common goal — avoiding another fourth-place finish.

Snapchat parent company Snap begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday under the ticker name SNAP after the popular messaging app raised $ 3.4 billion in its initial public offering (IPO).

Snap’s offering was priced above the expectations at $ 17 a share. The IPO was oversubscribed by more than ten-times which means the shares could have been priced at as much as $ 19. The stock price places the company’s market value at around $ 24 billion. Snap was initially targeting $ 19.5 billion to $ 22.3 billion range.

According to Reuters sources, the company wanted to attract longer-term investors, like mutual funds, rather than hedge funds which could sell the shares quickly for a fast profit.

Snap became one of the highest-profile stock market debuts in years thanks to high demand from investors. It is the most valuable American technology company to go public since Facebook nearly five years ago. Snap’s market value is more than double the size of rival Twitter.

Experts say the sale was well timed, as investors look for fresh opportunities after 2016 marked the slowest year for IPOs since 2008.

The Los Angeles-based company, Snap has enjoyed strong revenue growth in recent years, with earnings climbing nearly seven-fold in 2016 to $ 404.5 million.

However, its net loss widened 38 percent last year. The company faces intense competition from larger rivals such as Facebook’s Instagram as it grapples with decelerating user growth. The number of people using Snap’s app slowed in the second half of 2016, according to Bloomberg.

Snap is the parent company of popular photo sharing app Snapchat which is beloved by teenagers and people under 30 for applying bunny faces and vomiting rainbows onto selfies.

The company, which launched in 2011, allows users to send pictures and videos which then disappear after 10 seconds. The company says it has 158 million users daily with 2.5 billion snaps sent each day.

“We’ve built our network so we can manage all the activity customers undertake. Everything we’ve done is to provide the best experience on the best network — and we’ve built it for the future, not just for today,” said Ronan Dunne, president of Verizon’s wireless division. “We also fundamentally want you to have more choice. We’re not limiting you to a single plan. If you don’t need unlimited data, we still have 5 GB, S, M, and L Verizon plans that are perfect for you.”
