But it might be a losing battle.

“I’m a bit concerned that the plan is to get this done today, get the prizemoney, and then head to the Golden Slipper,” Dunn said on Saturday.

Adding to Dunn’s concerns is that Godolphin has not nominated Microphone for the Blue Diamond.

“I’ll say to James and the team to leave him in Melbourne as long as you can,” Dunn said.

Microphone had a narrow win, but Dunn suggested that wasn’t a reflection of his ability. “He’s in the top five Godolphin two-year-olds coming through, so it’s good to see him perform.”

Dunn sat comfortably on Microphone, who was down the middle of the track. But he had to shake up the colt when Pretty Brazen, who was on the inside, kicked clear with 100m to go.

Dunn admitted he thought Microphone might have picked up Pretty Brazen more easily than what transpired as he had to push hard to grab her and win by a nose.

Microphone’s stablemate Auxin stalked him down the outside and at one stage looked to be travelling better.

“The other horse had the advantage of being on the rail,” Dunn said. “I sort of held on to him thinking I had a lot more than what I did. His trials round the corner showed he’s got a turn of foot, but you don’t normally show that down the straight.”

Dunn said Microphone had had three trials in the lead-up to his debut, which may have taken the edge off him. “That was a pretty good ­effort down as I was in the middle on my own for most of the race,” he said.

Godolphin’s Melbourne foreman Kate Grimwade said Microphone’s win was “an impressive start to his career”.

“He has to do it on his own,” she said. “Auxin threatened with 200m to go, so it was good that he was able to fight back and ­respond in the manner that he did.

“I also couldn’t have been happier with Auxin’s run, too.”

Luke Currie, who rode runner-up Pretty Brazen, said the Tony McEvoy-trained filly was unlucky not to have won.

“She did a good job. The horses that went down with her weren’t good enough to go with her,” he said. “I could see the Godolphin horse on my outside was close, but if we had been together she would have won.”

Microphone ($ 2.45 fav) ­defeated Pretty Brazen ($ 4.80) by a nose, with Auxin ($ 5.50) three-quarters of a length ­behind.

Care To Think dives into the Group 1 pool for the first time in Saturday’s $ 700,000 Doomben 10,000. The son of So You Think came up with gate 12 in the 14-horse field, making it double-digit draws in five of his past six starts.

“Maybe I did something wrong because I seem to be coming up with bad barriers everywhere at the moment,” Dunn said. “As long as he draws a decent gate in the Stradbroke I will be happy.”

Care To Think emerged as one of the stars of Queensland’s summer carnival, winning the Magic Millions Cup. A Doncaster Mile tilt was aborted after just one Sydney run when Dunn decided instead to target the Stradbroke.

“The thing that swayed me was the fact that if he drew wide in the Doncaster, it might look really bad because he could jump and just want to get running like he did in that 1300m race down there,” Dunn said. “I’m not going to say he will never be a miler, but I think it will be later. He’s still working things out.”

Dunn’s opinion of Care To Think is so high that he at one stage hoped to secure an Everest slot by winning the 10,000, but he concedes it’s going to be a task from the draw now.

“He probably couldn’t win from that gate, unless they went really quick and the field split up and he was able to slot away,” he said. “There’s seven genuine Group 1 horses in it. This would have to be considered a stronger 10,000 than some of the recent ones.”

The combined earnings of the 14 runners is more than $ 26 million in a dream result for the kick-off to the Brisbane Racing Club carnival.

Care To Think firmed from $ 21 to $ 17 for the 10,000 with Ladbrokes on Wednesday.

Dunn believes his handy three-year-old Snitz is capable of turning the tables on his last-start conqueror Marsupial in Saturday’s Queensland Day Stakes.

“I know the Godolphin horse (Marsupial) is hard to beat, but Snitz was the run of the race for mine in that race,” Dunn said. “He was really good. He’s consistent and he turns up each time. If he gets a decent run, he’s a good chance.”

Asked about his confidence levels ahead of his star’s return, Dunn was succinct.

“He’s got too much weight,” he said. “Egg Tart (57½ kg) has won two Group 1 races, Crack Me Up (59kg) has won a Group 2 and we’ve only won a restricted Listed race.

“He’s won more prizemoney than the others but it’s all centred around one race. The previous start wasn’t even Listed. Three starts ago he was only winning a Class 6 Plate.

“You usually get a four-point adjustment going to New South Wales but they didn’t adjust him. He’s got his same Queensland rating.”

The weight aside, Dunn said Care To Think was in ­superb touch based on a sparkling recent trial and a rousing gallop on Wednesday.

“I’m very happy with where he’s at,” Dunn said. “But he’s pretty short in the market and he has barrier 12 to overcome as well.”

Stablemate Snitz won a 1000m Open trial at the Gold Coast on Thursday in preparation for his tilt on the Country Championships Qualifier at Grafton on March 11.

“He missed a run because of the wet last Saturday, so I needed to do something with him and I wanted him to have a good hitout,” Dunn said. “It may not be a bad thing (being washed out). If he’d won that race he would have got 59kg. Now he gets in with 57½ kg.”

■ GAI Waterhouse has won the Surround Stakes four times and punters are warming to her adding a fifth with training partner Adrian Bott as the pair saddle Shumookh in the inaugural running of the race at Group 1 level at Randwick on Saturday.

Shumookh, who has drawn the inside barrier, opened $ 6 with Ladbrokes, but has firmed to $ 4.50, with Alizee easing from $ 2.05 to $ 2.15.

Barbie flying after sizzling time in trial

OUTBACK Barbie torched the clock in a spectacular 9½-length trial win over 1000m on the Gold Coast on Thursday.

Ridden by Jim Byrne, Outback Barbie ran a second faster than stablemate Ef Troop, who won his heat by three lengths under Jeff Lloyd.

The pair will run in the Reisling Stakes and Todman Trial respectively at Rosehill next Saturday in a bid to confirm themselves as legitimate Golden Slipper contenders.

Byrne, who was thrown from Outback Barbie when she did “a U-turn” at the end of the trial, said she was a better filly this preparation.

“The last trial she had was against Ef Troop and I thought she was really smoking that day and she gave me a stronger feel again (yesterday). You couldn’t fault the way she went,” he said. “She’s pretty special. I’ve liked her from day one and she’s just got stronger all the way through. I expect her to be extremely competitive in Sydney.”
