Dunkin’ Donuts is piloting a new “next-generation concept store” in Quincy, MA where it will test multiple new offerings related to ordering, payment, signage and branding, and more, before choosing whether or not to roll them out broadly, according to CNBC.

One of these offerings will be a specialized drive-thru lane for order-ahead customers that merges directly to the pickup window, allowing them to get their food and beverages more quickly, according to Boston.com. The firm will also implement digital ordering kiosks in the future.

The play could help Dunkin’ improve its rewards engagement and digital performance.

  • Dunkin’s mobile performance is lagging. Mobile order-ahead, which Dunkin’ launched to rewards and loyalty members in summer 2016, comprises between 3% and 4% of the chain’s total transactions. For context, Starbucks’ comparable offering hit that figure just nine months after launch, and doubled it by the 18-month mark, where Dunkin’ is now. Since mobile buyers, who by rule are loyalty members, tend to spend more overall and per-order, Dunkin’ has a reason to look to grow that program, especially as mobile commerce (m-commerce) rises.
  • Incentives could help. Giving customers a reason to try mobile order-ahead could help convince more users to do so, especially since a unique option like an accelerated drive-thru lane could grow in popularity, as car commerce is poised to go mainstream in the next few years. Barring technical or logistical challenges, it’s likely the test in Quincy will succeed, which could bring a similar offering to other eligible Dunkin’ stores. If we do see a broader rollout, that in turn could propel DD Perks membership in those regions, ultimately helping to grow engagement and spend at the quick-service restaurant (QSR). But the firm will need to watch out for drawbacks — sometimes, mobile order-ahead becomes too popular, leading to even longer waits or the need to hire additional staff — and preemptively work to address problems at pilot locations before going national.

Dunkin’ Donuts is doubling down on its “everyman” reputation.

“When we think about the sentiment of consumers in America right now, our brand stands for something that is all about hard work, transparency, values — that’s our brand,” Scott Hudler, Dunkin’s chief digital officer, said on Tuesday at a media day.

“It’s America runs on Dunkin’, not Republicans run on Dunkin’, Democrats run on Dunkin’,” he continued. “It’s America runs on Dunkin. When we think about elitism starting to fade away, this is our sweet spot.”

Dunkin’s self-presentation could be seen as a jab at the more expensive Starbucks, which has come under fire for CEO Howard Schultz’s progressive stances. Or, it could simply be a vocalization of the fact that Dunkin’ Donuts is trying to offer something completely different than its competitors.

“If you’re going to sit somewhere and write your screenplay, a Dunkin’ location probably isn’t for you,” Hudler said. “But if you’re running the carpool in the morning, if you’re running your kids to hockey or soccer… then we’re your brand. We’re for you.”

Dunkin’s recent exploration of more complex and expensive beverages has raised concerns that the chain was trying to win over coffee snobs — creating an identity crisis of sorts for the chain. While the coffee-snob-approved image allows chains like Starbucks to charge higher prices and win over new customers, even Starbucks has struggled to maintain an upscale reputation while also opening thousands of locations. 

By doubling down on anti-elitist branding, Dunkin’ Donuts can focus on appealing to the average, on-the-go American. While that may mean the chain loses out on the coffee snob crowd, it also means Dunkin’ can be more cautious and learn lessons from competitors’ successes and failures.

“The great thing about being a little big behind those guys, is we’ve been able to study them” as Dunkin’ grows its mobile ordering platform, Hudler said on Starbucks’ and other chains’ recent mobile issues.

Cold BrewDunkin

The same theory applies to Dunkin’s menu.

Dunkin’ Donuts rolled out cold brew last summer — a launch the company considers one of the most successful in its history.

However, the company had been testing and tinkering with the beverage for some time, waiting for the perfect moment when the drink became mainstream enough that Dunkin’ wouldn’t be tasked with educating customers about the beverage. Instead, the coffee chain waited to launch cold brew just as it was becoming something customers expected and wanted.

As coffee culture sweeps the US, Dunkin’ Donuts isn’t trying to be hip. 

And, in 2017, the company believes that’s the ideal position to win over customers.

Dunkin’ Donuts is ditching its Coffee Coolatta.

This summer, the coffee chain will discontinue its frozen coffee drink and debut its new Frozen Dunkin’ Coffee, a blended beverage that draws inspiration from Dunkin’s classic iced coffee, made with coffee extract, sugar, and dairy.

“Our Coffee Coolatta isn’t good enough,” Chris Fuqua, Dunkin’s senior vice president of brand marketing, said at a media day at Dunkin’ Brands’ headquarters on Tuesday.

Executives said that the Frozen Coffee is meant to appeal to a different type of customer than the Coolatta.

The Coffee Coolatta is basically an uber-decadent dessert. A large Frozen Mocha Coffee Coolatta with cream packs a whopping 990 calories and 133 grams of sugar. That’s the same amount of calories as three chocolate creme donuts — and almost 10 times as much sugar.

The new drink is intended to win over regular coffee drinkers looking for a warm weather caffeine fix. Still, when it comes to nutrition, Dunkin’s Frozen Coffee is far from a healthy beverage. A 32-ounce large has 840 calories and 123 grams of sugar.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends limiting sugar consumption to less than 50 grams per day. 

“Coolattas are a platform we’ve had for years,” said Paul Racicot, Dunkin’s director of culinary innovation. “But, we believe it’s time we… contemporize our frozen platform.”

Dunkin’s decision to swap its Coffee Coolatta for Frozen Coffee is part of a bigger effort to emphasize more coffee-centric beverages as coffee culture becomes increasingly mainstream. Last summer, the chain launched cold brew coffee, something that Dunkin’ says helped “democratize” the drink. Now, the chain is serving nitro cold brew in 10 locations, with plans to expand the test in the near future.

There are also more coffee-centric frozen beverages in test phases at the company. This summer, Dunkin’ Donuts is testing Caramel Shaved Iced Espresso — espresso shots served over shaved ice, topped with caramel and whipped cream — in Maine and in Florida.

“We have to continue to innovate against coffee, because of its importance to us as a business,” said Anthony Bonitatibus, a brand marketing manager at Dunkin’. “We’re always thinking about what is the next big thing in coffee, because we can’t just rest on our laurels.”
