My Dungeon Girl experience took quite the turn: at first I thought “all of this is utterly pointless.” A few hours later I was hooked. That’s because your first forays into the game’s dungeons are simply overwhelming. It explains all of its various mechanisms at once and in great detail, and this wall of text it throws at you is bound to confuse you to no end. Pointless clicking ensues. However, the more you play, the more sense everything starts to make, and that’s where the game just draws you in.

Exploring the game’s dungeons is a fairly abstract affair. Each floor is represented by a 6×6 grid, and you interact with it by clicking on its tiles. Search tiles need to be clicked in order to show the exit to the next floor. Work tiles give you money, heart tiles give you health, and sword tiles let you attack the enemies that sometimes appear. Occasionally, you can also pick up loot and materials.

You can click on any tile – no need to match three of them or something like that. However, the more of them you can group together, the better. Now, the whole point of dungeon exploration is making progress within the dungeon while also making money and not getting kicked out early by its denizens. It’s a balancing act, and learning how to do all of this is a lot of fun. Every few dungeon floors, you can exit the dungeon and later re-enter at that exact same spot. That’s how you make progress.

You’re not completely alone in your endeavors, as you’re joined by some companions who support you with their skill sets. The more time you spend with them, the more “friend points” you unlock, which in turn allows you to unlock skills, other companions, or small slice-of-life cutscenes.

Item crafting makes another huge impact. You can basically combine the things you find on your expeditions and create new or stronger items. I’ve not quite figured out how to do this right, mind. It ispretty complex (and better items are definitely needed for you to progress, that why I am currently stuck on level 45 or so.)

Dungeon Girl is an odd game. It neither feels like a traditional puzzle game, nor like a light RPG. The crowded UI and poor onboarding makes it hard to get a grip of what exactly is happening, but once you got it, you’re going to be hooked. This is very much its own charming little thing, and it’s extremely compelling.

Darkest Dungeon’s newest DLC isn’t quite like anything else in the game prior. The expansion, called “The Color of Madness,” is a clear homage to an H.P. Lovecraft story—“The Colour Out of Space”—in a game already full of such homages. But it also incorporates a whole new style of endless mission into Darkest Dungeon’s grueling grind.

Also, there are aliens.

Like the story on which it’s based, “The Color of Madness” starts with a comet crash landing into a farmstead. The impact spreads strange, slimy crystals across the surrounding land and its inhabitants, morphing them into a new enemy faction called Husks. Husks aren’t particularly tough but make up for their weakness with numbers. “The Color of Madness” mostly plays out as an endless, wave-based horde mode, granting better rewards the longer a single team survives the thronging masses. And if your team dies? It’ll just be temporarily lost in time and space, keeping its items and progress without that pesky perma-death.

MidBoss, the challenging roguelike where you help a lowly imp possess fallen foes, taking their powers until you’re strong enough to become the final boss, has begun to do some neat in-game events, the first of which aims to let you show a little LGBT Pride with its death cards for a limited time.

MidBoss‘ death cards, which are earned upon death or beating the game, let players take that particular seed from a given generated run, allowing them to bring elements and items over into a new game to try again. These cards, which feature some delightfully silly explanations on how you met your end, have been given a rainbow makeover for the time being, although players can keep this theme after the event is over by sending out a picture of their demise (or success!) on Twitter.

“Over half of the people who work at or with Kitsune Games are members of the LGBT community in some way, so as a studio we’re big LGBT supporters,” said Emma ‘Eniko’ Maassen, founder of Kitsune Games. “This event allows us to both show that aspect of the studio and show solidarity with the LGBT community, but it also lays the groundwork for future events.”

It’s a fun reason to get back into the game and start helping that imp reach its dreams (as is the developer’s constant work in improving the game and adding onto it), so why not get back to dungeon crawling with this celebratory event?

A dark mystery lurks in the deepest floors of the dungeons of Moonlighter. Having the right equipment to survive long enough to get some answers requires cash, though! Luckily, you’ll be able to sell the rubbish you find in your dungeon crawling, and if you price it right, you’ll be able to turn a profit and arm yourself to the teeth.

Will is a shopkeeper by day and dungeon explorer by night. Wanting to prove himself as a hero and solve the mystery of the dungeons, Will takes a shot at the dangerous area and quickly discovers he’s going to need a lot of help (and funds) to do it. Basic equipment won’t help Will last long in Moonlighter‘s top-down combat, so players will need to defeat who they can, gather the goodies they drop, sell them, and use the funds to gain better equipment that will increase their chances of victory in the end.

Acquiring items to sell isn’t so easy (the rare ones, that is), as you’ll get them by defeating monsters. With a limited bag, you’ll have to pick and choose what you want to bring back from your dungeon exploration. Some items will be cursed as well, and you may have to make some hard decisions to keep them (like blowing up an item adjacent to the rare, cursed one). Then, you’ll need to price them just right in your shop to make the money you need to amass the gear needed to stay alive and solve that mystery.

With 5 dungeons to explore and profit from, you’ll be making millions and a name for yourself in no time!

When you’re in a dungeon, you may think that fighting your enemy is the only way to proceed. What about just getting out of there? Having a talk? In Sir Questionnaire, a turn-based hack’n’slash, you’ll be given two options for every room you explore. Don’t think the dungeon is just for monsters, though, as you’re sure to encounter some interesting folk on your adventure through the depths.

There’s quite a lot to behold in Sir Questionnaire, but it’s up to you to figure out which of the two options you’re given will take you further. As you walk through these rooms, you’ll encounter monsters, people, and sights, and how you react to them is up to you, having players interact with the creatures and objects they find based on some limited decisions. Whether you take up arms, stroll by, or even snap a photo for your handy codex, it’d entirely up to the player to figure out if there’s a better thing to do than beat things with your cane.

If you find yourself getting good at exploration, you can take up quests that range from easy to hard, gaining a special reward for the next game should you pull it off. As a single old man with a cane and monocle, you may need all the help you can get (plus there’s also the roguelike elements)!

The developer has made sure that players will have a want to repeatedly delve into the depths of this dungeon to find out the secrets it holds as well offering many things to discover that absolutely wring every last bit of play out of nine tiles. There’s no hand holding in Seek Elytiv, and those who seek a challenge will no doubt find it, but they’ll find equal amounts of amazement at what the developer has done with such a small space.
