    Russia has held a major selloff of US Treasury bonds, dumping some $ 47bn-worth of papers and momentarily dropping six places on a list of major foreign holders of US securities, recently released statistics for April have shown.

    In just one month, Russia proceeded to sell $ 47.4 billion out of the $ 96.1 billion the country had in US treasury bonds in March. The latest statistics released by the US Treasury Department on Friday showed that, in April, Russia had only $ 48.7bn in American assets, occupying 22nd place on the list of “major foreign holders of Treasury securities.”

    China, which holds the most US Treasury bonds, also sold off some seven billion-worth of its American assets, from March to April, and now has $ 1.18 trillion invested in securities. Japan, which is positioned second on the list, in the same timeframe sold off some $ 12 billion, leaving just over a trillion dollars in US coffers. Ireland, which had $ 300.4 billion in April also managed to ditch over $ 17 billion in US assets.

    A treasury bond is a fixed-interest government debt security with a maturity of more than 10 years. Treasury bonds make interest payments two times a year.

    The mass selloff of US bonds by Russian follows numerous rounds of sanctions imposed by Washington against Moscow. The punitive measures targeted some of the most important sectors of the Russian economy, by limiting American financing available to Russian banks and business sectors across all major sectors.

    Today the White House confirmed there will be no replacement for Rob Joyce as cybersecurity coordinator. Joyce was Trump’s first pick for this position created by the Obama Administration and spent 13 months as the “cyber czar” coordinating security efforts across government. Now the new national security advisor John Bolton is eliminating the position, as Politico reports that an email sent to staffers said the intent is to “streamline authority” within the National Security Council, which has two senior cyber policy directors.

    Not everyone agrees, however, as Senate Intelligence ranking member Mark Warner (D-VA) tweeted “We also need to articulate a clear cyber doctrine. I don’t see how getting rid of the top cyber official in the White House does anything to make our country safer from cyber threats.” Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI), said: “It is an enormous step backwards to deemphasize this growing challenge.”

    Joyce will return to his post at the NSA. Meanwhile, Trump signed an executive order intended to give CIOs at federal agencies more hiring authority and control over budgets. Without the “cyber czar” agencies will have to find ways to coordinate with each other and foreign governments on matters like election security and data breaches without a single person managing the efforts. This should work out just fine.

    Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said in February that Russia is not sticking to American debt and can replace it if it finds an adequate substitution elsewhere. “We are ready to invest in the securities issued by other sovereign states, the main thing is that they should be low-risk and accordingly bring income,” Siluanov said at the time.

    China remains the largest buyer of US debt, increasing its holding by $ 8.5 billion to $ 1.18 trillion in February. Analysts say China can use its vast holdings of US treasuries as a bargaining chip in the trade dispute with President Donald Trump’s administration.

    However, analysts doubt Beijing would start dumping American treasuries. “It is more effective as a threat. If they sell, they have no threat. It would only escalate the situation and eliminate their leverage,” according to bond investor Jeff Gundlach.

    Global markets are still awaiting China’s reaction to the bilateral trade barriers imposed in March, since the data from the US Treasury comes with a two-month delay.

    “That’s more of a slow-burning story. It’s a bit too soon for any tariff talk to have an impact of China’s Treasury holdings,” said Gennadiy Goldberg, interest rates strategist at TD Securities in New York, as quoted by Reuters.

    The tech firm will connect to the Russian system for transfer of financial messages (SPFS) to make its payments safer. “The digital infrastructure will help to exchange data in encrypted mode, which reduces the risk of external intrusion into the system and the likelihood of hacker attacks,” Rostec said.

    Rostec was established in late 2007 to consolidate strategically important Russian companies. It has divisions in aircraft, electronics, and armaments. It unites companies like Russian Helicopters, Kalashnikov Concern, and Rosoboronexport.

    The head of Rostec, Igor Zavyalov, said that the transition to a new system will reduce dependence on foreign services and will provide an opportunity to transfer information without using the capacities of foreign providers.

    Last month, another Russian state-owned firm, global oil giant Rosneft, announced it had tested the SPFS in December with the help of the country’s third largest lender, Gazprombank.

    The potential exclusion of Russia from SWIFT has worried the country’s banks since 2014, when the EU and the US introduced the first round of international sanctions against Moscow over alleged involvement in the Ukraine crisis and the reunification with Crimea. However, SWIFT itself has fended off such talks.

    In 2017, the head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, said at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that Russia is ready for disconnection from SWIFT.

    Furniture giant IKEA has been forced to remove its commercial from Chinese TV after it’s ‘message’ triggered a storm of condemnation on social media. The ad, critics said, ridicules single women as it features a mother who threatens to reject her daughter for not having a boyfriend.

    “The TV ad has been withdrawn from all channels by IKEA China,” the company’s spokeswoman in China told Reuters.

    The Swedish retailer attracted negative headlines after internet users descended on its half-minute clip, broadcast in China. The piece starts with a family dinner with parents seeming rather dissatisfied. The mother then strictly announces: “If you cannot bring back a boyfriend, don’t call me Mum!”

    However, tensions subside when the doorbell rings and the daughter greets a man holding flowers. As she introduces the guest as her boyfriend, the parents quickly change their attitude and start to dress up the living room with IKEA items. While the parents and the boyfriend enjoy dinner, the daughter is taken aback by the sudden transformation. It concludes with the caption, “celebrate everyday’s life.”

    “Is the ad trying to tell us single women are not welcome at home and can’t use IKEA products to celebrate moments in everyday life? This is clearly sexist, I am disappointed,” one commented on the Sino Weibo microblogging website.

    “I just want to ask IKEA would they dare to show such an advert in their home country, Sweden?” SCMP quoted another user.

    “Whether having a romantic partner or not is one’s own business and does not need any interference from others, let alone an advertisement,” said Ba Ge Zhuan Yong, a Weibo user with more than six million followers.

    Others believed that with such an ad, the company was encouraging and forcing single women into getting married, according to the Global Times.

    On Tuesday, IKEA released a statement, apologizing for “giving the wrong perception” following the avalanche of criticism for stigmatizing so-called “leftover women,” a derogatory term widely used in China to describe women remaining unmarried in their late 20s.

    “IKEA encourages people to live different lifestyles, and this belief is reflected in our product design and home furnishing solutions. Gender equality is a fundamental part of the IKEA culture and values, which we share with everybody,” says the statement, which, however, hasn’t appeased everybody.
