Before the buzzy Aladdin and Mulan remakes make their way to theaters, there is Tim Burton‘s Dumbo, the live-action remake of the 1941 animated film that emotionally scarred all of us as children. Despite rocking a star-studded cast including Colin Farrell, Danny Devito, Michael Keaton, and Eva Green, it feels like Dumbo has fallen by the wayside when it comes to the Disney live-action remake train. But the new Dumbo trailer is here to remind you that this movie is coming out, and that we’ll get to see Farrell in at least one upcoming big-budget fantasy movie.

Dumbo Trailer

The live-action Dumbo reimagines the tale of the big-eared elephant into a story of a single father (Colin Farrell) and his two children who work at a traveling circus run by Max Medici (Danny Devito, keeping his wardrobe from Big Fish). The family bonds with the circus’ newest addition, a shy young elephant named Dumbo that is soon discovered to have the unique ability of flight. His amazing talents garners the attention of the greedy entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton, doing his best P.T. Barnum).

Directed by Burton from a script by Ehren Kruger (Ophelia, Dream House), Dumbo also stars Eva Green, Alan Arkin, and Finley Hobbins.

Here is the official synopsis for Dumbo:

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, the all-new grand live-action adventure “Dumbo” expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

Dumbo soars into theaters on March 29, 2019.

The organically-formed 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge (dialling from the UK: 001 877 803 1111/1hotels.com), built on what was once derelict wasteland, has a prime position and stupendous views of Manhattan over the East River and iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

The 1 Hotel group (1 Central Park and 1 South Beach, Miami), has an ethos about “connecting to a place” and Brooklyn is no exception.

The group is the brainchild of Barry Sternlicht, formerly of Starwood Hotels, who started creating this organic brand of hotels in 2005.

So far, he hasn’t put an organic shoe-clad foot wrong.

He enlisted local artisans to create simple yet stylish furniture and landscape designers to create interior and exterior living walls so guests can really bond with nature.

In the lobby, large potted trees, leather seats and wooden coffee tables, all constructed from reclaimed wood (some the result of Hurricane Sandy in 2012) give it the air of an enchanted forest.

The 194-room property sits bang opposite the ferry terminal and at the start of the new Brooklyn Bridge Park (which the hotel’s reclaimed water irrigates), popular with cyclists, walkers and joggers who use the winding path which cuts through landscaped gardens.

The room to book is 1027.

Windows slide open on expansive views of Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

The “hemp” beds are incredible and interiors reflect the area’s industrial past. Wire grates and reclaimed wood panels provide the bedheads and room dividers while lampshades of pressed leather continue the organic, calming theme.

A brass faucet in the rooms provides spring water on tap. Wraparound soft robes made from a thick sweatshirt fabric and slipper socks you can keep, with meditation tips on the label, are sweet touches.

Their rooftop bar, lit with fairy lights and fire pits, is Brooklyn’s hottest drinking spot. Doubles from £268, room only.

The William Vale hotel (williamvale.com) in nearby Williamsburg wins the “Best view of Manhattan” prize.

Its “cross-legged” foundations and the all-white contemporary boutique hotel with balconies is an impressive site.

The bar on the 22nd floor offers a sensational 360° view of Manhattan.

In summer, their 60ft hotel pool is the coolest place to cool off in Brooklyn.

The rooms aren’t bad either; super clean lines; modern white with splashes of colour in the artworks, designer lighting and furniture but best of all, the views – and what views.

We couldn’t stop talking about them, with virtually every corner of the hotel offering a different perspective. Dining options include the very authentic Italian Leuca on the ground floor with a provincial Italian vibe – brightly glazed pots and Italian floor tiles.

Go for pastas and wood-fired pizzas. Doubles from £275, room only.

In the navy

Brooklyn’s sprawling Navy Yard played an important role in the Second World War, which saw 70,000 workers, including 10,000 women, come to repair and build Allied ships.

When the last ship sailed out of here in 1961, the buildings all but crumbled, except for the dry dock, constructed in 1801 and which has been in constant use since.

Turnstile Tours (turnstiletours.com) will show you around.

Warehouses are home to more than 300 niche businesses; from woodworkers to makers of armour and snow globes – even a whisky distillery.

One entrepreneurial winemaker, Devin Shomaker, started Rooftop Reds (703-582-8609/rooftopreds.com) a boutique vineyard where vines grow in metal planter boxes on top of Building 275.

Only 300 bottles are produced each year. Sample one at sunset on the roof from April-November.

You’ll not only get to try the produce while nibbling on a “perfect picnic” of cheese or charcuterie, you get an incredible view of Manhattan too. Tours £22.

The Brooklyn Gourmet

Juliana’s and Grimaldi’s are landmarks in Dumbo.

Both regularly come out tops on the “best pizza in New York” lists. Join the queue outside for coal-fired super-thin-crusted pizzas (most popular is margherita – tomato and mozzarella), served on raised stands on simple long wooden tables.

Wandering the charming, hidden Vinegar Hill neighbourhood tucked in behind the waterside power station is a must.

It’s a handful of historic wooden houses lining the cobblestone streets, yet it feels like you’ve stepped back in time.

Have brunch at Vinegar Hill House (718 522 1018; 172 Hudson).

The old carriage house has a quirky decor of salvaged furniture but top culinary credentials: cast iron chicken, chops and a wicked sourdough pancake. Around £90 for two.

Frankel’s Deli Brooklyn

Maison Premier (maisonpremiere.com) 298 Bedford Avenue, brings a touch of France to Brooklyn in this sensational oyster-cum-cocktail bar.

Action is focused on the bar lined with antique glasses and tincture bottles – even an absinthe fountain.

Waiters in jaunty waistcoats and braces whip up Bloody Marys complete with miniature potatoes and giant olives and serve endless platters of oysters, lobster and chilled rosé.

The slightly-distressed decor; aged gilt mirrors; old oil portraits, weathered iron tables and chairs evoke the Belle Époque Paris of the 1920s.

Not even a dozen flavours make up the choice at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, which explains why it’s so good.

In an old fireboat house, just below the bridge, this small-batch maker leaves the major manufacturers way out in the cold.

Pistachio includes real whole nuts and peaches and cream is just that. Honest and pure. Heavenly. Cash only.

You don’t have to be Jewish to love Frankel’s (frankelsdelicatessen.com; 631 Manhattan Avenue, Greenpoint), so say the owners of this 1950s-style deli.

Delving into old family recipes, owners Alex and Zach Frankel have created a traditional menu of smoked fish, salmon bagels and pastrami on rye. Around £9.

The shopping

Vintage is big business in Brooklyn.

Sex And The City stylists sourced much of the show’s wardrobe here, in particular along Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg.

This offbeat strip is always buzzing and is known for sensational vintage finds.

For pretty, one-off jewellery, try Catbird (catbirdnyc.com) at 219. A lovely old-fashioned hat shop, Goorin Bros.(goorin. com) at 181, has dark wooden shelves and piles of panamas and flatcaps, mostly American made, from £34.

Create your own perfume at the beautifully curated Le Labo (lelabofragrances.com; 120 North 6th Street), in this industrial space is an offshoot of the Grasse perfumery.

Make your own from £137, or choose from their stunning collection of 15 heady fragrances.

Committed fashionistas should head to Beacon’s Closet, 74 Guernsey Street, Greenpoint (beaconscloset.com). Dozens of racks are edited according to colour with designers mixed in with high street.

Laura Bush (yes, granddaughter of Ex-US President George Bush) has opened a very worthy shop on Water Street, Dumbo.

Feed (feedprojects.com) does just that via the sale of cleverly curated items – tote bags, cashmere jumpers, even coffee.

Each tag displays how many meals your purchase will provide for children in need. Totes from £19.

Bridging the gap

Brooklyn’s most iconic feature is its bridge. The best way to see it and glean its history is to walk it.

Big Onion (bigonionwalkingtours. com) offers a brilliant taste of its history.

Led by a super enthusiastic guide, we learn that 40,000 tons of stone and concrete keep the wires steady.

The towers came first with wires installed 18 months later. It was really pushing engineering limits at the time. We come off in Brooklyn Heights, the glorious brownstone neighbourhood whose real estate prices outstrip Manhattan’s and stop outside the house where Breakfast At Tiffany’s writer Truman Capote was born.

It’s a fascinating commentary on this colourful and historical borough. Tours £20.

New York: Brooklyn’s Dumbo area is far more desirable than it sounds https://briefnews.eu/new-york-brooklyns-dumbo-area-is-far-more-desirable-than-it-sounds/ https://briefnews.eu/new-york-brooklyns-dumbo-area-is-far-more-desirable-than-it-sounds/#respond Sat, 09 Sep 2017 09:10:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-york-brooklyns-dumbo-area-is-far-more-desirable-than-it-sounds/

Was this a pun on margherita pizza’s component ingredient?

As it happens, no. Felix instead is worried about getting stuck on a cramped coach with an over-cheery commentator.

But I’d done my research, totted up the tour’s five-star reviews, and so here we are, among 12 others in a smart black minibus whizzing through the streets of Chinatown towards one of New York’s most colourful suburbs.

Our guide on this Slice of Brooklyn Pizza Tour is Tony, whose nasal “fuh-getta-boud-it” Brooklyn accent matches a lovely line in quirky stories. Within minutes, Felix has swapped his headphones for appreciative smiles. “You guys,” Tony announces, “are gonna taste the very best pizza outside of Italy.”

We haven’t eaten breakfast, so this is welcome news. And I’m enjoying the unfamiliar streets of Brooklyn’s Dumbo area (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) – now a desirable neighbourhood for peace-seeking Manhattanites.

Small art galleries stand beside graffiti-splattered Latino cocktail shacks, and in between are lovely glimpses of the Brooklyn Bridge’s underbelly, where trains rumble above, and golden sunlight dapples the stonework.

This is where Al Pacino, playing a blind man, raced his sports car in Scent Of A Woman – Tony deftly flicking on the TV monitor to show the exact clip as we pass the bridge’s mammoth stone piers.

Film clips pattern this tour and make for a fun element.

Further into Brooklyn, we watch a young John Travolta strutting his pointy-shoed stuff along the streets of Bensonhurst – the borough’s original Little Italy – noting, as we gaze from the screen to the streets that many of the shops from Saturday Night Fever’s opening still exist.

But first, Grimaldi’s, a pizzeria housed in a pretty 19th century building beneath Brooklyn Bridge. Here, tables covered in red and white checked cloth surround a huge coal-fired brick oven.

The space is tiny and snaking street queues are a regular feature. Luckily we are early, and as we chat with our fellow diners, huge rounds of margherita pizza appear.

With their crisp smoky crusts coated in Sicilian imported tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, Felix and I agree they’re the best we’ve tasted.

So, too, thought Michelle Obama, whose photo taken outside Grimaldi’s hangs on the wall. Newly gentrified Bensonhurst follows, with Tony pointing out the golf course where Tiger Woods hit his first ball.

This was also New York City’s original mobland, home to five of the biggest Mafia families during the 1970s, but today its streets of homely Gothic-style brownstones appear calm.

We stop at Spumoni Gardens restaurant for a traditional thick crust Sicilian “sfincione” pizza. It’s too rich for me and Felix, but Tony reckons it’s the best in town.

“There was a guy fresh out of jail who dashed here before going home to see his mama first,” he laughs. “That’s all you need to know.”

Neighbouring Coney Island is where we brave the biting Atlantic breeze to stroll the boardwalk – America’s longest – enjoying far-reaching views across to Queens and Sandy Hook and working off all those calories at the same time.

Naturally, we also enjoy Manhattan’s top sights and our charming Midtown base, the Hotel Metro, proves a convenient and cosy delight. Rooms feature super-comfy beds and elegant art deco furniture, and there’s free breakfast and wifi included – a rare addition in New York – while up on the roof garden we have a stunning view across to the Empire State Building.

The famous Circle Line boat tour along the Hudson River is one of the best ways to view Manhattan’s exquisite skyline, including the Statue of Liberty.

Times Square is a short walk from the Circle Line’s pier, and we’re in luck, for emerging from Starbucks, is Kelsey Grammer of Frasier fame.

Making a fool of myself, I approach and babble on about being a fan while Felix snaps the two of us. The actor is graciousness personified, rewarding me with a friendly hug.

More sobering is our visit to the 911 Memorial Museum. Ground Zero’s twin sunken fountains are deeply moving, but we are more profoundly affected by the museum’s collection of personal detritus and burnt out fire engines.

Soon, hunger pangs resurface and talk turns to dinner. Felix suggests a pizza supper. Can we seriously better Grimaldi’s?

Tim Burton’s Live-Action ‘Dumbo’ Adds Oscar-Winner Alan Arkin https://briefnews.eu/tim-burtons-live-action-dumbo-adds-oscar-winner-alan-arkin/ https://briefnews.eu/tim-burtons-live-action-dumbo-adds-oscar-winner-alan-arkin/#respond Sun, 20 Aug 2017 21:45:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tim-burtons-live-action-dumbo-adds-oscar-winner-alan-arkin/ Alan Arkin dumbo

Tim Burton is currently shooting another live-action remake for Disney: Dumbo. Production began almost a month ago with Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton confirmed to star, and now Academy Award winner Alan Arkin (Argo, Litle Miss Sunshine) has joined the impressive cast.

Below, learn more about the Alan Arkin joining the Dumbo cast.

Variety learned Arkin is heading to London to shoot the film. The outlet doesn’t have many details on Arkin’s supporting character, but he’ll play a Wall Street tycoon named J. Griffin Remington. It’ll mark the second time Arkin has worked with Tim Burton after co-starring in Edward Scissorhands. He brought a lot of laughs to that film, and perhaps the Glengarry Glen Ross star will do the same for Dumbo. It’s easy to imagine the actor, with his distinct deliveries and talent, being hilarious as a Wall Street tycoon, especially if Burton has play it a little more broadly. Arkin has a great gift for playing great, huge personalities.

Screenwriter Ehren Kruger‘s (the Transformers sequels) version of Dumbo is about Holt Farrier (Farrell) and his children’s bond with the special elephant. Farrier was once a star in the circus, but after he returns home from the war, circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) gives him the task of watching over the ridiculed Dumbo. After it becomes known Dumbo has the power of flight, the kind-hearted animal catches the attention of the villainous V.A. Vandevere (Keaton). The entrepreneur and an aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Green), want to take Dumbo and turn him into a star.

At D23 this summer, Disney unveiled some concept art from the movie. Out editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta said “the art is colorful and fantastical, very much in line with the aesthetic established by his Alice in Wonderland movie.” The aesthetic of the first wildly successful Disney reimagining was distancing. Based on the box-office receipts, millions of people happily jumped right into that CG-heavy world, but I thought the world and style were cold and, worst of all, almost exactly what would be expected from a Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie. I’m a bigger fan of the Burton who can surprise us and create new, imaginative worlds only he could envision. Maybe he’ll pull that off with Dumbo since it seems he’s telling a whole new story with only a handful of familiar elements from the original movie.

There are some exciting elements of this particular Disney reimagining, most notably Keaton, DeVito, and Green all working with Burton again. The director just knows how to get fun performances out of those actors. Burton and Keaton especially have created work together that’s still standing the test of time and my fingers are crossed that they can do the same with Dumbo.

Dumbo opens in theaters March 29, 2019.

‘Dumbo’ Cast Confirmed as Production Begins [D23 Expo 2017] https://briefnews.eu/dumbo-cast-confirmed-as-production-begins-d23-expo-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/dumbo-cast-confirmed-as-production-begins-d23-expo-2017/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2017 02:12:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dumbo-cast-confirmed-as-production-begins-d23-expo-2017/ Dumbo

Disney has found a formula for success with live-action remakes of their beloved animated movies and the upcoming remake of Dumbo looks to continue to trend. Director Tim Burton, who started this whole trend in the first place with Alice in Wonderland, is retelling the story of the iconic flying elephant in live-action and we got a first look at the movie from the D23 Expo.

Although Burton himself was not present for D23, he did send a video from behind the scenes of the Dumbo remake saying hello to the crowd. Production has just begin on the film and the video featured footage from the set, which, naturally, showed off a circus. Disney fans will be pleased to know that Burton recorded his video from inside Casey Jr., the iconic train from the original movie (which has been further immortalized in Disney theme parks).

While no actual footage from the film was screened (presumably because nothing is ready), the crowd did see some concept art. Our own Peter Sciretta says that the art is colorful and fantastical, very much in line with the aesthetic established by his Alice in Wonderland movie. Take from that what you will.

We can credit (or blame) Tim Burton for Disney’s recent push into live-action remakes of their classic animated movies, because his version of Alice in Wonderland made over a billion dollars back in 2010. Burton was hired to direct a live-action Dumbo adaptation in 2015, and he soon assembled a cast of familiar actors, some of which he’s worked with before.

Eva Green (Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) is playing a French trapeze artist named Colette who is employed by the movie’s villain. Tom Hanks was once in the running to play the villain, whose name is Vandermere, but Burton’s former Batman Michael Keaton entered talks to star as the antagonist and was confirmed at the D23 panel. Danny DeVito (Batman Returns) is playing a circus owner who gets bought out by Vandermere, and after Chris Pine and Will Smith passed, Colin Farrell became the frontrunner to play a widowed father of two kids from Kentucky who befriend the titular elephant. His casting was also confirmed at D23.

Burton, writer Ehren Kruger (the Transformers sequels), and producer Justin Springer (TRON: Legacy) are looking to “add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey” and pad out the 1941 film’s hour-long runtime with new material that “deepens the circus aspect of the story.” The project is expected to use a mixture of CG and live-action elements to capture a new take on the story, and considering Burton’s involvement, we know the end result will at least be a visually distinct piece of work.

Before Beauty and the Beast topped the box office with a record-breaking debut this month, Disney was already all-in on their roster of live-action adaptations of their animated classics (check out our rundown of all of the developing projects here). While Mulan is too early in development to know whether it’s a musical and Aladdin is searching for young stars to play the two leads, the remake of Dumbo is finalizing its cast with production slated to begin sooner than later this year.

Tim Burton is directing the Dumbo remake, and he’s already brought on board two of his previous collaborators with Danny DeVito and Eva Green on board. Now the cast will include someone the Batman and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children director hasn’t worked with before as Colin Farrell is in talks to take one of the lead roles.

Find out more about Colin Farrell joining Dumbo after the jump.

Deadline has the news of Colin Farrell being lined up to play Dumbo. While Disney’s original movie focuses on a young elephant with big floppy ears who gets mocked during his time as a circus performer while being separated from his mother, it sounds like the live-action adaptation will be drastically different from the 1941 animated classic.

If a deal gets finalized, Colin Farrell will play a widowed father of two kids from Kentucky who befriend Dumbo. Presumably they’ll help save him from the film’s villain, a man named Vandemere who takes over a circus from Danny DeVito. I’m betting Vandemere (a role that has yet to be cast) is the kind of villain who mistreats Dumbo or exploits him just to make a quick buck, which would make the movie quite relevant considering all the activism against the treatment of elephants in real circuses in the United States.

Meanwhile, Eva Green plays a French trapeze artist named Colette who also performs in the circus, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she befriends Colin Farrell and his family and ends up helping Dumbo out as well. Normally I’d wager that a romance sparks between Farrell and Green, but with him playing a widow, the important bond will probably be between the family and Dumbo, both of which are likely reeling from being estranged from their respective mothers.

The original Dumbo saw the elephant being shunned due to his big ears and being an outcast after a circus stunt goes wrong. With all the extra human characters involved, I don’t think there will be as much of a focus on the animal relationships as in the original movie, but hopefully Dumbo will still have a little mouse friend to help him out, though I can’t imagine it being a talking animal character.

Colin Farrell is the third big name linked to this lead role in Dumbo after both Will Smith and Chris Pine fell through as potential options. He’s no stranger to Disney having played the father to Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks. He’s been dabbling in both blockbuster and indie fair rather magnificently lately with a key role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, not to mention an outstanding and surprising turn in The Lobster.

Tim Burton will be working from a script by Transformers sequels writer Ehren Kruger with TRON Legacy producer Justin Springer on board. Considering the original animated movie is only an hour and four minutes long, it’ll be interesting to see how they beef up the story so that it fills a longer feature length runtime.

Dumbo doesn’t have a release date yet, but production will star sometime later this year.

Danny DeVito and Tim Burton Might Join Forces Again for ‘Dumbo’ https://briefnews.eu/danny-devito-and-tim-burton-might-join-forces-again-for-dumbo/ https://briefnews.eu/danny-devito-and-tim-burton-might-join-forces-again-for-dumbo/#respond Fri, 10 Mar 2017 04:37:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/danny-devito-and-tim-burton-might-join-forces-again-for-dumbo/ Danny DeVito Dumbo

Tim Burton may reunite with his Batman Returns star, Danny DeVito, for Disney’s live-action Dumbo. DeVito is currently in negotiations to join the film, and Burton regular Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) is close to signing up as well. The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star might play Medici, the owner of a small circus.

Below, learn more about the potential Danny DeVito Dumbo role.

Deadline reports DeVito is trying to work the film into his schedule. Right now, he has some commitments to a Broadway show, but Deadline’s source told them a deal is almost complete. If negotiations continue to go according to plan, then DeVito will play a character whose circus is taken over by the film’s villain, Vandemere. About two months ago, Tom Hanks was circling the role of Vandemere, but we’ve yet to hear if he passed the film, like Will Smith and Chris Pine already have.

It’s been 14 years since Burton and DeVito last worked together. In their second collaboration, Big Fish, the actor played a werewolf/ringmaster and he was perfect for the role. DeVito is an actor who can convincingly play a charismatic showman, so he’s likely a good fit for a circus owner in Dumbo. He’s brought made some real magic for Burton in the past, so maybe he could do it again for Dumbo.

While DeVito’s performance in Big Fish is delightful, his work as the Penguin in Batman Returns is flat-out masterful. He’s equally hilarious, monstrous, and tragic in that movie (and he remained in-character between takes). His performance as the Penguin is one of the most heartfelt and richest performances in a Burton film, so it’s pleasing to learn the two may soon collaborate again.

Eva Green’s role is tied to Vandemere. She’ll play a French trapeze artist – How delightful does that casting sound? – employed by Vandemere. There’s no info on whether her character, Colette, is a villain like her boss or how she connects to the film’s main characters, a father and his kids who form a special bond with Dumbo, the adorable and kind-hearted elephant who can fly. Pine was recently up for the role of the father, but the deal fell through.

Burton, screenwriter Ehren Kruger (the Transformers sequels), and producer Justin Springer‘s (TRON: Legacy) live-action take on Dumbo will “add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey” and “expands and deepens the circus aspect of the story.” Considering the 1941 film is only a little over an hour long, there’s plenty of elements they’ll need to deepen and expand to tell a two-hour story about the famous elephant. Apparently, Burton and all involved are “barreling towards a production start,” but the exact date is unknown.

Will Smith recently passed on Dumbo. Tim Burton‘s film, which keeps moving closer to production, still doesn’t have any actors attached. While we wait to learn whether Tom Hanks will play the live-action remake’s villain, it’s being reported that Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) is now in talks for one of the lead roles.

Below, learn more about the Eva Green Dumbo casting.

Deadline writes that Green may star in Burton’s reimagining of the 1941 Disney classic. There are three main adult roles in the film, and one of them, the lead female role, might go to Green. The actress is becoming popular in the world of Tim Burton. She brought some much-needed life to Dark Shadows, and last year she played the lovely Miss Peregrine in Burton’s playful, dark, and sweet, albeit uneven, adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Burton and Disney are still on the lookout for an actor to play the role of the father. There aren’t many known plot details for Burton’s Dumbo, which is a mix of CG and live-action, but the story will follow a father whose children develop a close bond with the adorable elephant. Most recently, Chris Pine (Star Trek Beyond) was in the running for the starring role. A deal for him to star fell through, though.

We’ve heard before that the film “will add a unique family story that parallels Dumbo’s journey” and “expands and deepen the circus aspect of the story,” but we also still don’t know anything about the villain Hanks is considering playing. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger is clearly inventing quite a few roles to bring the story of Dumbo to live-action. Kruger, who wrote The Ring remake and worked on the Transformers sequels, is producing the film alongside Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy).

Last year we saw the last of Green on Penny Dreadful, a beautiful and exciting drama that came to an abrupt close. She did some remarkable work on John Logan’s series, making Vanessa Ives the heart of that show’s family. Weirdly, Green’s performance — which was often heartbreaking, vulnerable, and even terrifying — was only nominated once at the Golden Globes. Years before her time on the Showtime series, she gave exceptional performances in Casino Royale, Perfect Sense, The Salvation, Dreamers, and the Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven. We’ll see Green next in Roman Polanski’s Based on a True Story and Lisa Langseth’s Euphoria.
