“What’s up, party people?!”

What’s up on The Flash is this season’s introduction of Chester P. Runk, a scrappy scientist whose experiment-gone-awry demanded Team Flash’s intervention — and who, eventually, might become one of their superfriends.

In the comic books, Chester (or “Chunk”) was an overweight cosmologist whose ill-fated encounter with a matter transmitting machine left him with the ability to create black holes. (As a side effect, he needed to consume 47 times his own body weight to stay “fueled.”)

The CW series’ iteration of the character more or less became one with a black hole he accidentally created in the Season 6 premiere, until Barry & Co. managed to shutter the opening while keeping Chester intact.

“Chester P. Runk was one of my favorite characters from the late-’80s run of the Flash comics,” showrunner Eric Wallace tells TVLine. “I was a young, African-American comic book reader, always looking for my own face in the comic books, and here was a character who, even though he was presented as villainous at first, eventually becomes not only an ally but a friend of [Wally West’s] The Flash.

“He has these really wild, sci-fi powers that involve physics, but more importantly, he’s a scientist,” Wallace notes. TV’s The Flash thus set out to “present that kind of positive image for POC audience members to see up on the screen — not that we don’t already have some, but let’s add a new one!”

Also attractive to Wallace is the fact that Chester is a self-made inventor and not some well-funded genius. “I thought those were all important messages to send out, so people can see, ‘You don’t have to have a multi-million dollar facility to make a great contribution to the world.’”

Upon first seeing the dailies of actor Brandon McKnight’s “absolutely wonderful performance” as Chester, “the first thing I said was, ‘How quickly can we get this guy back?’” says Wallace. “We want to get to know him a little better and let him interact with Team Flash a second time, very soon.” After all, among other things, “He’s got to ask Natalie out, and I want to see that story,” says the EP. “Science people can find love, too.”

When last we saw Chester, he had survived his separation from the black hole but had eyes that glowed with orange dark energy. What sort of powers might he wield once he stabilizes? As in the comic books, “Will Chester be a cosmic-powered being? The answer is no,” affirms Wallace. “At least not for a long time.”

And despite his experience and following as a vlogger, the newbie is not in line to join Iris at the Citizen. “No, he is not the new staff member,” says Wallace. “That person arrives in [Episode] 6×02.”

Speaking of Chester and the black hole he unleashed on Central City, we had to ask Wallace about the fact that not 48 hours prior, Supergirl had her own run-in with a black hole, in her Earth’s National City. Was it, like, “Black Hole Week” on The CW?

Upon learning of Supergirl‘s own premiere storyline,”I laughed… out… loud,” Wallace says. “Even though we’re all in the same Arrowverse, we’re all so busy sometimes that we don’t get a chance to talk to each other as much as we would like to. So imagine my surprise when it was brought to my attention — after, mind you, both scripts had already been published, approved, and gone into pre-production!

Wallace admits that at first, he was “really worried” about the unplanned similarity, but upon watching Supergirl, “what I loved is that theirs is as different as you can humanly get in approaching the black hole phenomenon. So I was like, ‘No, we’re fine.’”

But… shouldn’t the black holes at least have looked the same in Central City and National City? “Well,” Wallace smiles, “that’s a post-Crisis question, isn’t it?”

Dota 2 is set to receive some major gameplay changes, according to Valve’s newly released Dueling Fates patch notes. The update will arrive on 1st November, bringing with it the new characters teased at Valve’s International esports tournament in August. They now have names: Donté Panlin, the Pangolier, is a swashbuckling melee hero with the ability to fully negate armor, while Dark Willow Mireska Sunbreeze is a ranged fairy with magical powers that can stun and inflict fear.

Dueling Fates will include a revamped matchmaking rating for both ranked and unranked players, switching to a six-month seasonal system. This will ensure “MMR is both recent and accurate…which will lead to better quality games for everyone,” wrote valve. Players will also get a profile medal based on their peak MMR in each season, with the first ranked season kicking off in two weeks.

In addition, a new Turbo Mode serves up more gold and experience, weakens defensive towers, and reduces respawn time, making it ideal for experimenting with new heroes or strategies. The Ability Draft is also getting a new interface, and the Guide system will be more easily accessible. Plus, there’s a boatload of new items, talents, and drafting rules on the way, which you can read about on the Dota 2 site.

Some of the world’s best Dota 2 players are doing battle at Valve’s The International esports tournament, but they may need some more practice when they get home. That’s because the company just announced it will add two more characters soon in its “The Dueling Fates” update. Neither hero has a name yet, but in the preview trailer the first attacked enemies both by rolling over them Sonic the Hedgehog-style and with a sword, while the other one flew in on fairy wings before releasing a minion to attack.

North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong Un watched his air force exhibit their air-strike accuracy mere hours before a snap US military exercise flew dozens of fighter jets in dueling displays of airpower on Thursday.

South Korea’s Yonhap News reported North Korea’s “target-striking contest,” which reportedly pleased the dictator, while Fox News broke the story about the US’s massive elephant walk of F-15s, helicopters, and tankers.

But while North Korea’s air display may have been a show, its reported plans to test a nuclear warhead on Saturday, the anniversary of its founding, isn’t being taken lightly.

The US has sent their USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier to the Korean peninsula as tensions flare — a move the North Koreans have condemned as “reckless.”

As the two sides flex their muscles in a lopsided contest, it’s China — North Korea’s biggest economic and political backer — that may hold the keys to deescalating the conflict.

“Military force cannot resolve the issue,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Reuters in Beijing.

At a press conference on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump suggested that he’d pressured China into cutting off support for North Korea and to force the rogue regime to denuclearize.

China is responsible for a whopping 85% of North Korea’s external trade and supplying a similar amount of its energy imports, but Beijing has never fully used this to get the Kim regime to drop its arms program.

Now, as the US increasingly talks of using military force against North Korea, China has finally signaled a new willingness to act.

Dueling Dota 2 Pocket Picks Culminate In Bananas Comeback https://briefnews.eu/dueling-dota-2-pocket-picks-culminate-in-bananas-comeback/ https://briefnews.eu/dueling-dota-2-pocket-picks-culminate-in-bananas-comeback/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2017 09:12:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dueling-dota-2-pocket-picks-culminate-in-bananas-comeback/

The lower bracket seems like a strange place for a match-up like Evil Geniuses and Wings Gaming to happen, but in the first round of the Dota 2 Asia Championships bracket, both teams found themselves on their last leg in a best-of-one match. Back against the wall, both teams turned to oddball strategies, leading to one wild ride of a match.

The draft stage, where each team picks and bans heroes from a pool of over 100 characters to compose their team lineup, was normal to start. As the game commenced and carried on though, it was the Panda Brewmaster and Invoker combination on Wings Gaming that raised some eyebrows.

Panda Brewmaster’s ultimate splits him into three separate, fully controllable pandas representing the three elements Earth, Wind and Fire. These pandas have their own grooves and specialties, but it’s the Earth’s that is important: the Earth Panda does 300 percent damage to buildings. Combine this with Invoker’s Alacrity spell, which massively boosts attack speed, and you have this exact moment below, where Brewmaster can rush down a set of barracks and escape with little worry.

This strategy, alongside a few rough teamfights for Evil Geniuses, swung a game that was mildly in its favor to one that was vastly against it. Wings’ Doom was locking down Artour “Arteezy” Babaev’s Spectre at every turn with his eponymous ultimate, and Zhou “bLink” Yang’s Invoker was easily controlling every large-scale fight.

At this point, it was time for Evil Geniuses’ strategy to kick into gear. The Monkey King is a recent introduction to Dota 2, the first hero that didn’t originate in Defense of the Ancients, and was recently added to the competitive mode. Despite being a carry, some teams have been experimenting with him in the support role, particularly Evil Geniuses.

In the hands of EG’s Ludwig “zai” Wåhlberg, Monkey King was both an effective roaming support and a game-winning hero. Monkey King’s ultimate creates a circle, surrounded by copies of himself that attack enemies inside. Though they do less damage than the real Monkey King, they still apply any effects he might have from items, so his Desolator (which removes armor with every attack) and Abyssal Blade (which has a chance to stun with every attack) can run over the team and set his own up for an easy win.

At this point, EG had been rebuffed from Wings’ base several times, so smelling blood in the water, the team keeps the pressure on. Within four minutes EG is putting the enemy ancient in check, and Wings has to respond. Once again, Wåhlberg’s ultimate, combined with Puck (who was having a great game in the hands of Saahil “UNiVeRsE” Arora) holding Wings down with an ultimate of its own, Evil Geniuses secured the win against the champions of The International 6.

After the game, Dota stats man Ben Steenhuisen noted on Twitter that Wåhlberg’s game was fifth-highest all-time in Monkey King stuns (he also holds the second-highest spot as well). When you see a bunch of players in your pub games playing Monkey King support this coming week, just remember to thank Evil Geniuses.

Tesla is about to confront dueling best- and worst-case scenarios, and anything could happen (TSLA) https://briefnews.eu/tesla-is-about-to-confront-dueling-best-and-worst-case-scenarios-and-anything-could-happen-tsla/ https://briefnews.eu/tesla-is-about-to-confront-dueling-best-and-worst-case-scenarios-and-anything-could-happen-tsla/#respond Sun, 26 Mar 2017 21:57:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesla-is-about-to-confront-dueling-best-and-worst-case-scenarios-and-anything-could-happen-tsla/ Elon MuskREUTERS/Danny Moloshok

Tesla is preparing for its biggest year ever.

In the next six months, it will launch the $ 35,000 Model 3 mass-market car, and, over the course of 2017, the investment community will find out whether Elon Musk’s company can live up to its new business model as a vertically integrated energy firm, after its 2016 acquisition of SolarCity for $ 2 billion.

The stakes are high for the company and its $ 40 billion market cap. On Wall Street, the bear case for Tesla indicated that its stock could plummet to $ 50 from the current level of about $ 250. The bull case suggests that $ 500 per share could be in the cards.

Such a wide disparity has driven wild volatility in Tesla’s share price over the past two years. And to call it disparity really does investors a disservice. It’s actually disagreement over whether Tesla can be a successful sustainable-energy conglomerate or settle into a modest role as a provider of luxury electrified transportation.

This year will be critical to Tesla matching bullish expectations, or trimming itself back and witnessing the bear case take hold.

So there are two scenarios that could play out: best and worst.

The worst-case scenario

The bad news first.

Let’s explore what happens if everything goes wrong for Tesla in 2017.

The biggest risk is that the Model 3 launch is delayed. A delayed launch in and of itself wouldn’t be a signal that actual volume production of the Model 3 is at risk — Tesla could launch the car in 2018 and play catch-up at the factory — but it would be a sign that all the positive indications we’ve gotten so far about the timing of launch were misleading.

If the 3 is delayed, the next question is “for how long?” The Model X SUV arrived three years late. The Model 3 won’t be that late, but any significant lag — say, six months or more — would mean that Tesla would be forced to ask some percentage of the 373,000 preorder customers to wait. Tesla also wouldn’t be able to collect the revenue, which could add up to billions.

Awkward moments

Two quarters of delays would mean awkward exchanges on earnings calls with Wall Street analysts. Musk and his team have already concluded that Wall Street doesn’t have much of a clue about what the company is all about, so the exchanges themselves would be less troubling than the negative research notes and downgrades to ratings and target prices that would push shares below $ 200 and damage Tesla’s ability to finance itself through capital raises, of either equity or convertible debt.

That situation could compel Tesla to further draw on its lines of credit. There’s no point in sitting on the money when you’re trying to change the world, but it’s worth remembering that Tesla has added $ 3 billion in SolarCity debt to its balance sheet — debt that will need to be serviced.

What we can see is a cascade of terrible stuff that would undermine Tesla’s relatively monumental ambitions. Given the now debt-laden balance sheet, it could put the company under a certain amount of existential pressure. I don’t think bankruptcy would be on the table without a cataclysmic economic or political event that lays waste to the entire auto sector, but Musk would have to pull way back, perhaps abandoning the 3 and focusing on the S and the X, in the process becoming a niche luxury carmaker rather than a mass-market purveyor of clean mobility.

Other risks

Other stuff could go wrong. The fatal Autopilot accident in 2016 sent Tesla into a deep soul search, before the company decided that it needed to stay the course on its autonomous goals. There could be a massive recall (Tesla has already dealt with several modest ones). The Trump administration could withdraw support for electric vehicles, which could add $ 7,500 to the price tag of every Tesla sold (that’s the current federal tax credit).

But the worst of the worst-case scenario centers on the Model 3 and its delay or failure.

The best-case scenario

Asa Mathat | D: All Things Digital

Now the good news. What if Tesla does everything right in 2017?

That outcome begins with launching the Model 3 before the end of the year. There’s a better-than-average chance that Tesla will launch the car sooner than expected, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be delivering 5,000 a month before 2017 closes out.

More likely, volume production won’t happen until mid-2018 or later. But an on-time launch will have huge symbolic effect and could send Tesla shares surging past $ 300 for the first time.

Tesla could jump ahead on the self-driving front, using Autopilot to beat competitors such as General Motors and Ford to market by years. After 2016’s fatal Autopilot accident, Tesla has doubled down on the technology and is now building the hardware into every new vehicle.

New cars!

Musk & Co. could unveil a host of new vehicles and stoke media interest in the brand. A crossover SUV — think smaller Model X — is already planned, the Model Y. And Musk has hinted at a pickup and a semi, not to mention a revamped Roadster, Tesla’s original car, production of which as discontinued a few years back. Teslas are bonkers fast, so serving up a proper sports car would delight the company’s most passionate fans.

Tesla could also begin to establish its Tesla Network of car-sharing options and lay the groundwork for ride hailing, providing some parity with Uber and Lyft and bringing Tesla into a Silicon Valley business that it’s largely missed out on so far.

Continued expansion of the Gigafactory in Nevada would be a good sign that Tesla’s energy ambitions can be supported, along with the Model 3 production rollout. Both of those would require a lot of lithium-ion-battery cells.

The solar factor

And let’s not overlook SolarCity. Musk has managed to rev up enthusiasm for Tesla’s solar roof, and an early rollout of that product would start to shift the old SolarCity business away from leasing and toward fully purchased solar solutions. That would support Tesla Energy, as many roof customers may want to buy a storage battery. But it would also help Tesla to start moving some assets off its balance sheet — leased SolarCity panels that Tesla is now responsible for.

If Tesla achieved most of this, the company would be riding high by the end of 2017, even if it burned all its cash (roughly $ 3 billion) and continued to show no profit.

What will probably happen

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook

The news probably won’t be all good or all bad. It will likely be a mix of both.

To run it down:

—Tesla would launch the Model 3 early or as scheduled, but volume production wouldn’t arrive until late 2018. The bottom line is that although Tesla is getting better at launching cars, it’s still struggling to build them in large volumes.

—The stock would find a stable level, absent any big news. After a rally at the beginning of 2017, shares have fallen back after Tesla declined to offer full-year guidance on deliveries (last year was a miss, at just under 80,000, and 2017 could come in at something like 100-150,000, but Musk wants 500,000 by 2018). With another quarter or two of reporting to come before the Model 3 launch, investors will have opportunities to take profits. There’s a decent chance that Tesla could dip below $ 200 again before the end of the year.

—The SolarCity issues would be kicked down the road. Model 3 has to be the focus, so Musk will probably take the same progressive approach with solar roof as he has with Tesla Energy: a slow build. That said, investors are going to be concerned about how much more debt Tesla is carrying because high-growth companies aren’t supposed to be bogged down with liabilities.

—The Gigafactory would continue to expand.

—Tesla would get more aggressive about competing with Uber and Lyft. Time’s a wastin’, and the dominant narrative of tech-enabled mobility has decisively shifted from electric cars to shared transportation and transportation on demand.

—Autopilot would continue to improve. The technology is already state of the art and nobody else is racking up many real-world miles. Tesla’s ingrained network effects and first-mover advantage would start to pay dividends in 2017.

On balance, Tesla is under massive pressure to execute in 2017, but the company is in the best financial position it ever has been. Neither the best nor the worst should come to pass. But we’re going to want to pay attention no matter what.

Winter is coming… actually, winter never seems to leave on Fargo, doesn’t it?

The official trailer for Season 3 of FX’s parka-clad crime anthology — debuting Wednesday, April 19 at 10/9c — just dropped, and it gives us a great look at Ewan McGregor’s dual roles as a pair of polar-opposite brothers: Emmit, the tuxedo-clad “Parking Lot King of Minnesota,” and Ray, the balding parole officer who resents his brother’s success. Here, Ray comes to his brother begging for a little help: “You still owe me from what happened when we were kids.” But Emmit’s reluctant to open his wallet again: “Where does it end?”

BrainDead‘s Mary Elizabeth Winstead co-stars as Ray’s girlfriend Nikki Swango, who encourages him to get revenge: “You’re twice the man your brother is.” So Ray turns to stoned accomplice Maurice (Halt and Catch Fire‘s Scoot McNairy) and tells him, “I’ve got a place… that needs a little robbin’.”

And of course, things go wrong — this is Fargo, after all — so we catch glimpses of a nasty car wreck and someone beating the hell out of someone else with a blunt instrument. That brings in police chief Gloria Burgle (The Leftovers‘ Carrie Coon), who questions a local grocer about a suspicious purchase of a case of frozen orange juice concentrate. “Can you make meth from that?” the grocer wonders. “Not last I heard,” Gloria replies. (Oh, Fargo, never change.)
