A new Venom trailer is here, and it has everything fans of the character could want: slime, tongues, and Tom Hardy talking to himself. The film is part of Sony’s Spider-Verse (or is it the Venom-Verse? Answer unclear), a series of films which aren’t connected to Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man films, like Homecoming and the upcoming Far From Home. Confused? Don’t worry! None of this matters. Watch the Venom trailer below!

Oh Venom, you so crazy. Look, I don’t know what to make of this whole Venom thing. The character of Venom has aged extremely poorly – he was created back in an era where comics were venturing into the extreme, and everything had to be dark and gritty. How dark and gritty was Venom? Well, let’s just say, I once had a Venom action-figure that screamed “I’M GONNA EAT YOUR BRAIN!!!” when you pushed a button on his back.

This new trailer is…something. It’s tone is a bit wonky – on one level, you can tell that this film wants to be dark and gritty. On the other hand, there’s also a goofiness on display here, what with Tom Hardy talking to himself and turning into a slime monster. Will this work? We’ll find out soon.

The biggest issue with this whole thing is that Venom is, by nature, a Spider-Man character. But Spider-Man will apparently not be appearing in this Venom-solo film. So can Venom work without his main adversary? I guess we’ll find out! I will admit that the footage I’ve seen of Venom looks pretty entertaining. The film style makes it look like a late ’90s thriller, and I’m not entirely against that. Plus: director Ruben Fleischer has assembled one hell of an impressive cast. In addition to Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, we also have Michelle Williams wearing a wig, Riz Ahmed as the bad guy, Jenny Slate as an awkward scientist, and Woody Harrelson in a mysterious role (rumors have it he might be playing Carnage, but who knows).

In the past, we learned that Venom would be drawing on two specific comics for its story: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. Lethal Protector was the comic that turned Venom from a straight-up villain to more of an anti-hero. It also had the character leaving his Spider-Man roots behind: he left Spidey’s home of New York City for San Francisco. Planet of the Symbiotes, meanwhile, featured Venom dealing with an alien invasion. In that story, Venom teamed with Spider-Man, and Scarlet Spider, but that’s very, very unlikely to happen in this film. Carnage made an appearance in that comic run as well, which has helped fuel rumors the character might pop up in some form in this movie.

Venom opens October 5, 2018.

YOEL Romero is the prize.

His existence, at least to Australian UFC fighter Rob Whittaker, is like one of those stuffed pandas strung along Sideshow Alley at a County Fair.

And with good reason.

“Dude’s a killer,’’ Whittaker tells you simply.

“It’s the reason I’m in this business.

“I’m here to be one of the best ever — to take over the world — and the only way to do that is fighting the toughest.”

Sitting on a stool inside the T-Mobile Arena, beside him a giant cardboard sign bearing his name, Whittaker is spending this UFC 213 media day taking questions on Aussie fight history, Brisbane boxer Jeff Horn, even that impending bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.

Yet every time, he returns the conversation to that one constant: Romero.

So what if he wins Australia’s first UFC belt? Or guarantees a shot at regular middleweight champ Michael Bisping?

Hell, even the 26-year-old’s thoughts about the impending Mayweather-McGregor bout have progressed no further than “both guys get a ton of money”.

For again, his only thought, his only prize, is Romero.

That hulking Cuban middleweight who, apart from boasting a better rig than even those DC Superheroes scouring the nearby Las Vegas strip, is on a win streak stretching four years, eight fights and six brutal KOs — the most recent against no less than former middleweight champ Chris Weidman.

Put simply, Romero fights harder than his washboard stomach looks.

His powerful hands, too, accompanied by the type of showmanship that not only prompts a man to tear off his shirt during the Wednesday open workouts, but flex, shout praises to God and generally look every inch the the type of fella who, centuries ago, would’ve had virgins sacrificed in his honour.

Which is why even now, aged 40 and not long removed from a six-month USADA suspension, he remains favoured by many along press row.

Indeed, when taking questions during this particular media scrum, Whittaker is asked exactly how, err, concerned he is by the famed punching power of Romero?

A fighter who, having already won wrestling silver at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, now plans to bash up this Sydneysider on his way to UFC gold.

“But everyone I’ve fought hits hard,’’ Whittaker shrugs.

“He should be worried about my power too … it’s there.”

Isn’t it what?

Just don’t expect the man himself to elaborate.

For while Romero lost his shirt, and very nearly his mind, during the open workouts, Whittaker simply threw combinations, smiled sheepishly and then departed back to his room to play video games.

Just as through these 40 minutes of questioning, he refuses to be drawn on Mayweather/McGregor, fighting Bisping or doubling down on Horn’s upset win against Manny Pacquiao.

Yes, Whittaker says, he would like to be the Aussie who wins that first UFC title, albeit an interim one.

“But more than that, I’d like to be the Australian who beats Yoel Romero,” he adds hastily.

“And I hope he brings the best Yoel Romero the UFC has ever seen.

“That’s the guy I want to fight. The fighter that excites me and has all my attention.

“If I was being paid to fight Yoel Romero down at the pub, that’s where I’d fight him.

“I only have the one job.”

Glass Bottom Games just officially announced their next game, Spartan Fist. This first person puncher once again features detective Emma Jones, who seems determined to have a different occupation in every single game she stars in. Now she’s apparently in the business of punching dudes. Hard.

Described as a fast-paced “melee brawler with a limitless skill ceiling, Spartan Fist juxtaposes gory violence with punky vibrant voxel characters. Landing in an arena that’s different each time you play, you’ll navigate your way through a whimsically gritty and colorfully pixelated world while fighting your way to the top. Find different fist upgrades that can change your abilities, and enjoy the visceral satisfaction of punching your enemies” seeing your enemies explode into many tiny voxels. Glorious! All of this in order to retrieve some doodad called the Spartan Fist. I hope it fits, that fist.

In case you’re wondering where Franky, your trusty sidekick from Hot Tin Roof is – apparently she’s the one who got you into this mess when she found the “punch dudes! get paid!” flyer. Makes me glad that something like the “Glass Bottom Games Extended Universe” exists out there.

On first inspection, Cry Havoc looks like any number of similarly grim and gritty science fiction board games. It comes with a stash of plastic soldiers, robots, and aliens, and its artwork paints a world in tones of mud, fire, and gun metal. If you’re expecting a quick fix of hectic, dice-chucking combat, though, you’re going to be disappointed, because the game offers a much more thoughtful take on the concept of planetary conquest.

Cry Havoc hands players command of rival factions competing to colonise a newly discovered world.
