This month, Associate Editor Swapna Krishna is singing the praises of Dyson’s advanced but pricey hair dryer. Compared with her old model, it’s like night and day.

Swapna Krishna

I have hair problems. Specifically, I have thick, curly, long hair (layered, but to my waist at its longest) that is incredibly dry all the time. It’s so bad, the only way to ensure that my hair is manageable is if I don’t wash the conditioner out. If you know anything about curly hair, I have type 3a curls.

Frizz is a major issue for me, which is why blow-drying isn’t much of an option, even with a fancy diffuser. The second a hair dryer even approaches my hair, it begins to frizz. Even just quickly running a dryer through it to take some of the moisture out on a chilly day is a recipe for disaster. My hair immediately becomes sharp and spiky, which means I end up throwing it into a bun so I won’t have to deal with it jabbing me all day. It’s not fun, which is why I let my hair air-dry and just try not to schedule anything important before 4 PM.

All of this is why I’ve been so curious about the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. Everyone I’ve talked to who has used it speaks about it evangelically, even people with curly hair. Most of the reviews online seem pretty great. With a price in the US of $ 399, it seemed pretty ridiculous to pay so much for a device I can buy for $ 20 at the drugstore, but if it had the ability to literally change my life and allow me to leave the house before noon with dry hair, it might be worth it. So I took the plunge.

Let’s start with aesthetics. It’s a weird-looking device, for sure, but if you’ve seen one of the Dyson heaters or fans, the design will seem pretty familiar. The packaging is really nice, which may seem trivial, but it helps explain that price tag, at least a little. It comes with multiple tools: a smoothing nozzle, a concentrator and a diffuser. The body is a nice combination of gray and pink. All in all, it’s an attractive package.

The dryer itself is lightweight, and the cord is very long. I was especially struck by the dryer’s diminutive size. It’s relatively compact and would easily fit in a small suitcase or an overnight bag for travel. It has small buttons for both heat level and airflow, as well as an on/off switch and a button to press for a burst of cool air. It all feels high-quality and minimalist.

The real value of the Dyson hair dryer for many people is the sheer amount of airflow it can generate, which was actually a concern for me. Given that I have extremely frizz-prone curly hair, I didn’t need a vortex whipping my hair around at incredibly high speeds. What I needed was a low volume of air and consistent, even, high heat.

The Dyson gets very hot (I was warned to be careful with it near my scalp, something I quickly learned to pay attention to), but it has onboard tech to make sure it doesn’t fry your hair. The supersonic air also makes it work incredibly fast, so you don’t have to subject your hair to the heat for long. I started with my normal post-shower wet-hair routine (mainly DevaCurl products) and then applied a heat styling spray and creme for protection.

To dry my hair, I attached the diffuser (all the tools for this hair dryer are magnetic, which is incredibly convenient) and got to work. I gathered bunches of my hair in the diffuser and dried them at the highest heat setting but lowest air setting. Thanks to the supersonic air, my hair was about 75 percent dry in five minutes, with no more frizz than usual.

Dyson

Let me say that again: My long, thick hair, which takes about eight hours to air-dry, was almost fully dry in five minutes, with no additional frizz, thanks to the Dyson hair dryer. It feels and looks exactly the same as it would have with air drying — soft, smooth and shiny. I can’t even compare the results to my $ 80 BaByliss Tourmaline hair dryer, because it’s like night and day. The fact is, I couldn’t use a hair dryer before. Now I can.

Yes, $ 400 is pricey for a hair dryer. No one, least of all me, will dispute that. But sometimes it’s worth spending money one time on something that works well, improves your quality of life, and will last a long time. My only complaint at this point is that it isn’t dual-voltage; for the price I paid, I would like to be able to take it everywhere I travel so I never have to wait around with sopping wet hair for hours and hours ever again.

UK tumble dryer fire RISK: One million faulty dryers STILL in homes across the country https://briefnews.eu/uk-tumble-dryer-fire-risk-one-million-faulty-dryers-still-in-homes-across-the-country/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-tumble-dryer-fire-risk-one-million-faulty-dryers-still-in-homes-across-the-country/#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2017 19:37:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-tumble-dryer-fire-risk-one-million-faulty-dryers-still-in-homes-across-the-country/

Ian Moverley, communications director for Whirlpool, which makes Hotpoint and Indesit tumble dryers, said on Tuesday it had been difficult to get the message out to owners of the remaining faulty machines that they needed to be replaced or modified to make them safe.

This was said as Moverley sought to justify the company’s decision to wait six months after an Indesit model caused a serous fire in Shepherd’s Bush, London, before changing advice to consumers.

Luckily nobody was killed in the blaze but more than 100 families were evacuated.

Whirlpool later told tumble dryer users they must unplug and not use the faulty machines.

Speaking about Whirlpool’s decision to modify existing models rather than order a full recall, Moverley said: “We took our response very seriously and very diligently. We doubled the number of call centres and increased the number of engineers by 70 per cent.”

Conservative MP Antoinette Sandbach then questioned him on how many faulty tumble dryers were still in British homes, and he responded: “What we have seen is that the number of registrations [for modification] has fallen, but we estimate one million.”

Whirlpool had been replacing or repairing an estimated 3.8m potentially faulty dryers across the UK after identifying a fire-risk safety defect in November 2015.

This was caused when excess fluff touches the heating element. Whirlpool did not issue a product recall, instead telling customers they could continue to use their tumble dryer while waiting for the modification, as long as the dryer was not left unattended.

Whirlpool came under fire from the committee’s chair, the Labour MP Rachel Reeves, for failing to send a more senior representative from the company who could have been able to answer technical questions Moverley struggled with.

MPs then heard from Leon Livermore, chief executive of the Trading Standards Institute, who warned the current product safety system was close to breaking point.

He explained council funding cuts had affected the work of local trading standards services, cutting the amount of “market surveillance” they were able to do.

He said: “The current product safety system is already under pressure and won’t survive Brexit – which will make trading standards officers’ work more complex – or further austerity cuts.”

Describing the Shepherd’s Bush fire, Charlie Pugsley of the National Fire Chiefs Council warned it might have led to deaths if it had taken place at night, rather than 4.30pm.

After the hearing, Alex Neill of Which?, who also spoke at the hearing, said: “It is shocking that despite admitting that there are 1m potentially dangerous tumble dryers in people’s homes, Whirlpool is still failing to recall these machines voluntarily.

“Whirlpool must no longer ignore its responsibility for the safety of its customers and must conduct a full product recall. If it does not, the government must intervene.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Whirlpool for further comment.

The best compact washer and dryer https://briefnews.eu/the-best-compact-washer-and-dryer/ https://briefnews.eu/the-best-compact-washer-and-dryer/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 18:17:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-best-compact-washer-and-dryer/

If you can’t quite fit a full-size washer or dryer in your home, a 24-inch washer and ventless dryer pair will usually work instead. After 25 hours of research into 22 washers and 24 dryers, your best bet in this style is probably the Bosch 300 Series WAT28400UC washer and WTG86400UC dryer.

Who should get this

If your laundry area doesn’t have enough space for a full-size laundry set, or anywhere to ventilate the dryer, a compact washer or dryer might work instead. Most models are the size of a dishwasher, and they typically have around half the capacity of a full-size machine.

Compact machines tend to cost more than their full-size counterparts, though, so regular-size models are a better value if you can fit them.

How we picked

We focused on 24-inch (or European-style) compact washers and ventless dryers that come in matching pairs. The washing machines are all front-loaders, and the dryers do not require ventilation. This style of laundry can fit in more places around more types of homes than standard-size machines, such as side by side under a kitchen counter or stacked in a small laundry closet. Compacts like these still need most of the same plumbing and electrical requirements as a standard washer and dryer, including hot- and cold-water hookups, a 240-volt outlet, and a drain nearby.

The most important features in any appliance, including compact laundry, are reliability and helpful customer service. We also considered factors such as washer cleaning performance, washer spin speed, accelerated wash cycles, presence of a dryer reservoir, how easy it was to reach the dryer filter, capacity, and amount of noise and light produced.

Our pick: Bosch 300 Series compact washer and dryer

02 – Our pick: Bosch 300 Series compact washer and dryer

Most people who need a 24-inch (European style) compact washer and dryer should be happy with the Bosch 300 Series WAT28400UC washer and WTG86400UC dryer. Of the few models that fit our criteria, these in particular have most of the features that matter, including the fastest spin speed and a shorter wash cycle. The brand also has a strong reputation for reliability, service, customer support, and performance.

Bosch covers its laundry products with the industry-standard one-year parts and labor warranty, plus a second year of coverage for all parts, and the total cost of replacement for the control board and motor.

The 300 Series washer has one of the highest spin-cycle speeds we’ve seen, at 1,400 rpm, and is one of the few compact washers with an accelerated normal wash cycle—finishing an 8-pound load in 60 minutes rather than 100. This is a big time-saver, but because we haven’t tested the machine, we’re not sure if the speed comes at the expense of fabric care or efficiency.

The washer’s power supply could be a potential dealbreaker: Unlike most washing machines, the WAT28400UC needs a 240-volt outlet. However, you can plug it into the WTG86400UC dryer and piggyback off that connection (any good dryer needs a 240-volt outlet anyway). So if you’re stacking the machines, or installing them side by side, this is not an issue. The dryer also needs to be near a drain. Again, this is a nonissue for most people, because the dryer will be installed next to or on top of the washer, which obviously also needs to be near a drain. Price is another downside for the Bosch 300 Series. It’s the most expensive pair among our finalists by a fair margin.

Runner-up: Electrolux EIFLS20QSW and EIED200QSW

Photo: Electrolux

The Electrolux EIFLS20QSW washer and EIED200QSW dryer are the next-best pair if the Bosch’s washer voltage and dryer drainage requirements are a problem. The Electrolux pair gets good ratings for cleaning ability, and has a slightly larger washer capacity than other compact models, as well as the same class-leading 1,400 rpm spin speed as the Bosch. It also tends to cost about $ 300 less than the Bosch set. However, we came across an uncomfortable number of user reviews about poor reliability and customer service, and it’s also missing an accelerated-wash option.

Because the washer can plug directly into a standard 120-volt outlet, the Electrolux pair also allows more installation flexibility. And the Electrolux dryer can either collect its condensed water in a reservoir, or send it directly down a drain. The Bosch, by comparison, has no reservoir, so it needs to be installed near a drain.

The EIFLS20QSW also has the largest capacity we’ve seen in a compact washer. The drum is 2.4 cubic feet, which can help it hold a few more garments than the 2.2-cubic-foot Bosch 300 Series.

We’re not comfortable making the Electrolux pair our main pick, though, because we came across a few too many troubling reviews about reliability and customer service. Although at the time of writing the EIFLS20QSW washer actually has a slightly higher average user rating than the Bosch 300 Series, the negative reviews are very harsh, citing major malfunctions like control-board failures, drum-suspension problems, and big leaks. Some recent reviews for the Electrolux also cited iffy customer service. We are pulling from a small set of data, and these problems can occasionally happen to any kind of product from any brand—but these reviews popped up more often than we were comfortable seeing for a product with relatively little feedback overall.

A smaller, cheaper, portable option: Panda PAN612SG

Photo: Panda

Some homes are so limited by space or hookups, or by landlords who aren’t interested in making improvements, that even-smaller, more-portable washing and drying tools are the only option for in-home laundry. For those situations, we think the Panda PAN612SG, a portable washer on wheels, will work. We looked into 19 portable washers, and we like the Panda PAN612SG because the price is low, the features are useful, it can fit up to 12 pounds of laundry, and it doesn’t require any special plumbing or electrical connections. It’s not fully automatic, and it still may not be great for some apartments, but it might be your saving grace from the laundromat. We’d pair that with a folding drying rack like the Polder 2-Tier Mesh Top.

We haven’t tested any of these portable washers ourselves, and we have only user reviews to go off of—no editorial testing. So please, take this as a starting point rather than a strong recommendation.

The Panda’s drain hose is made out of cheap plastic and doesn’t attach to the water outlet very securely, which is a potential flood hazard. If it fails, it will dump gallons of water on your floor, which is a problem for you but a bigger problem for anyone downstairs. This risk is why it’s common for older apartment buildings to completely ban in-unit laundry. So check with your landlord, your lease, or your HOA covenant to see if you’re even allowed to get a portable washer.

Helmet hair dryer to ‘key’ implants: IFA Berlin reveals some of tech’s wackiest innovations https://briefnews.eu/helmet-hair-dryer-to-key-implants-ifa-berlin-reveals-some-of-techs-wackiest-innovations/ https://briefnews.eu/helmet-hair-dryer-to-key-implants-ifa-berlin-reveals-some-of-techs-wackiest-innovations/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 17:23:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/helmet-hair-dryer-to-key-implants-ifa-berlin-reveals-some-of-techs-wackiest-innovations/

Europe’s biggest tech trade show, IFA, is taking place in Berlin this week and alongside the latest industry developments, tech companies also unveiled some eye-catching, though odd, innovations.

RT takes a look at some of the wackiest gadgets unveiled at the event.

1 Hair dryer hood

This bizarre looking helmet hair dryer is groundbreaking in allowing the user keep their hands free while the hood drys and styles their hair. On the down side, it still has to be plugged in…

The device comes with an ‘ionizing’ function that promises to leave hair smooth and shiny.

The Profi Care PC-HTH 3003 Hair dryer Hood also includes a round brush and a 1.8m cord, as well as a travel bag.

2 Implants to ‘upgrade humans’

Digiwell presented its range of smart implants which it describes as “the permanent fusion of the human body with technology.”

The implants can be inserted into an individual’s hand at home and act as a digital interface for the body. The company says the product would make house keys redundant.

3 Flying ‘selfie’ camera

The end may be nigh for the selfie stick if this device takes hold: the Airselfie, billed as a “revolutionary pocket-size flying camera” that will be the “future of selfies.”

It has a HD 5-megapixel-video camera which connects to your smartphone and weighs just 61 grams. The device can reach heights of 20 meters thanks to its turbo fan propellers.

4 The ‘communicative’ oven

Miele unveiled its “intelligent” Dialog oven that “communicates” with food while it’s cooking.

The appliance uses electromagnetic waves to monitor the texture of the food while cooking and adjusts accordingly, promising to provide excellent results every time. The perfect meal doesn’t come cheap, however. Dialog has an eye-watering retail price of €7,990.

5 Double chin eliminator

The Rio toner claims to banish double chins and tone the whole neck and chin area in just 60 seconds.

“Target tone the ‘double chin’ alone in just 60 seconds a day. Feel the effect after just one use and see the results in just a few days,” manufacturers claim.

The device uses advanced Electrical-Muscle-Stimulation to exercise the supporting muscles and increase circulation.

Scientists have invented a dryer that can dry clothes in half the time without heat (GE) https://briefnews.eu/scientists-have-invented-a-dryer-that-can-dry-clothes-in-half-the-time-without-heat-ge/ https://briefnews.eu/scientists-have-invented-a-dryer-that-can-dry-clothes-in-half-the-time-without-heat-ge/#respond Mon, 17 Apr 2017 17:10:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scientists-have-invented-a-dryer-that-can-dry-clothes-in-half-the-time-without-heat-ge/ ultrasonic dryerDepartment of Energy

Waiting an hour for your clothes to dry can feel tedious.

But scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee have developed a dryer that could make doing laundry much quicker. Called the ultrasonic dryer, it’s expected to be up to five times more energy efficient than most conventional dryers and able dry a large load of clothes in about half the time.

Instead of using heat the way most dryers do, the ultrasonic dryer relies on high-frequency vibrations. Devices called green transducers convert electricity into vibrations, shaking the water from clothes. The scientists say that this method will allow a medium load of laundry to dry in 20 minutes, which is significantly less time than the average 50 minutes it takes in many heat-based machines.

Americans spend a total of $ 9 billion each year — up to 4% of America’s total residential energy use — on electricity to power dryers. If the ultrasonic dryer becomes commercially available, it could therefore save energy and money.

The drying technology also leaves less lint behind than normal dryers do, since the majority of lint is created when the hot air stream blows tiny fibers off of clothing. Drying clothes without heat also reduces the chance that their colors will fade.

the ultrasonic dryerDepartment of Energy

The team has been working with General Electric and the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop the ultrasonic drying technology, a process that has thus far taken two years. The DOE has devoted $ 880,000 in funding toward the project.

As of now, the researchers have created a working prototype, but the dryer won’t hit the commercial market for at least a couple of years.
