Dr. Mehmet Oz owns shares of two companies that supply hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug that he urged the White House to push as a treatment for COVID-19 despite a lack of evidence showing its efficacy.

CNBC first reported he owned stock in the companies on Wednesday, citing a financial disclosure. The document, filed in April, showed Oz and his wife owned at least a $ 615,000 stake in Thermo Fisher Scientific, a supplier that lists hydroxychloroquine as one of its products. A more recent financial disclosure, filed August 13, showed Oz and his wife still owned between $ 15,001 and $ 50,000 worth of shares in the company.

The disclosures also showed Oz and his wife owned between $ 15,001 and $ 50,000 worth of shares in McKesson Corporation, which labels and distributes hydroxychloroquine, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

It's unclear when Oz and his wife purchased the shares in the companies. A spokesperson for Oz's campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

In a statement shared with CNBC, Oz campaign spokeswoman Brittany Yanick did not address the stocks but said: "At the outset of the pandemic, Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke with health experts worldwide who were seeing hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin as viable treatment options for desperately ill COVID patients. He offered to fund the clinical trial at Columbia University."

Hydroxychloroquine is an FDA-approved anti-malaria medicine that has been studied for its effectiveness in treating COVID-19. The drug was pushed by former President Donald Trump and prescribed by doctors across the country, however, numerous studies have found the drug is not effective in treating COVID-19. The FDA and the World Health Organization both recommend against using it to treat COVID-19.

Oz, a Republican running for a US Senate seat in Pennsylvania, sent emails to senior White House advisers in the early days of the pandemic promoting hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19. The emails were made public last month in a report from the Select House Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis.

The report showed Oz sent separate emails promoting the drug in March 2020 to Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump's son-in-law, and Dr. Deborah Birx, who was coordinating the administration's coronavirus response. Clinical trials on the drug's effectiveness against COVID-19 had not been completed.

Oz urged the US to begin patient trials and to allow doctors to start prescribing it, citing a French microbiologist who said he had success with the drug but whose tests weren't randomized or peer-reviewed.

"We cannot hide behind study protocols if we are not allowed to proceed," Oz wrote in the email to Birx.

"I want to push brave Americans to join trials on my show tomorrow, but cannot without a game plan for accessing drugs," he said, adding he would "personally recruit patients and pay for a trial" if he was able to obtain the hydroxychloroquine pills.

Oz, who has been endorsed by Trump, is running for Senate against Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who criticized his opponent for having pushed the drug.

During a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, former President Donald Trump called for drug dealers to receive the death penalty, despite having pardoned several people convicted of selling drugs before he left office.

In his first rally appearance since the Mar-a-Lago raid on August 8, Trump criticized the FBI, the Department of Justice, and President Joe Biden, labeling him an "enemy of the state" in a lengthy speech.

"Under Democrat control the streets of our great cities are drenched in the blood of innocent victims," Trump said, adding that drug dealers were responsible for killing hundreds of people every year.

It's unclear where the numbers Trump cited came from.

"Every drug dealer is responsible and that doesn't include what they've done to families of people that haven't died, but families that are just devastated by what happened to their children and to themselves," he said.

Trump then said he was calling for drug dealers to receive capital punishment, which he claimed would "reduce drug distribution in our country on day one by 75%" and "save millions of lives."

"We would solve that problem so fast and I'm calling on Republicans and Democrats immediately to institute, to get to Washington and institute the death penalty for drug dealers. You will no longer have a problem," he said.

 

Trump used his broad clemency powers as president to grant pardons or commutations to numerous people who were convicted of selling drugs.

In October 2020, Trump granted pardons to four people who had been convicted of non-violent drug charges, including drug trafficking, conspiracy, selling, and distribution. In a statement announcing the pardons, the White House noted all of them had been model inmates who worked to improve themselves while in prison.

"In light of the decisions these individuals have made following their convictions to improve their lives and the lives of others while incarcerated, the President has determined that each is deserving of an Executive Grant of Clemency," NPR reported the White House said at the time.

During his final few days in office, Trump granted pardons and commutations to 143 people. A partial list of those granted clemency, compiled by NBC, showed many of them had been convicted for drug trafficking, conspiracy, or similar charges.

Trump also pardoned Jonathan Braun, a drug smuggler serving a 10-year prison sentence for running a large-scale marijuana ring. The White House said Braun would "seek employment to support his wife and children" but failed to mention that he had also been accused and was under investigation for violent crimes, The New York Times reported.

Of the more than 1,600 generic drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration since January of 2017, more than 700—or 43 percent—are not for sale in the US, according to a new analysis by Kaiser Health News.

The finding means that many pricy, brand-name drugs are not facing the competition that could help drive down soaring prices. Among the drugs missing in action are generic versions of the expensive blood thinner Brilinta and the HIV medication Truvada. Moreover, of the approved drugs that would offer a brand-name drug its first competition, 36 percent are being held off the market, the analysis found.

Experts told KHN that the reasons drug makers may withhold an approved generic from the market are varied. Industry consolidation has made buying, manufacturing, and distributing generics more difficult in recent years. Generic drug makers also, as always, face patent litigation from brand-name makers. Then there’s potentially anti-competitive deals, in which brand-name drug makers simply pay generic makers to keep their product off the market for a while—a so-called “pay for delay” tactic.

Drugs such as cocaine and marijuana are commonly used by England’s top flight footballers amid claims that the FA does not take drug-testing seriously, according to an expert in researching the use of drugs in sport.

Professor Ivan Waddington, who works at the University of Chester, has spent decades analyzing the impact of drugs on sport. He says that the use of recreational substances is rampant among Premiership footballers, citing an anonymous survey conducted in 2005 with the Professional Footballer’s Association in which numerous players admitted to drug use.

This comes after recent reports in which an England international footballer was allegedly asked to leave a nightclub after being found to have taken cocaine at his club’s pre-Christmas night out. The FA have said that they are investigating the matter and have asked witnesses to step forward.

“And I certainly don’t think the football clubs take drug testing seriously as seriously they ought to. And again, individual clubs will deny that.

“In both our studies the professional footballers told us that the use of recreational drugs is widespread. There can be no doubt about that. 

“The recreational drugs which are most used are cocaine and marijuana. There’s no difficulty about picking up marijuana. The test is technically sound and there’s no difficulty about picking up cocaine. 

“We know that large numbers of these players are using these drugs because they told us so why aren’t they being picked up?“

Legalizing POT was supposed to reduce crime, or so advocates argued. The theory was simple: As cannabis buyers beat a path to the nearest dispensary, the black market would dry up, and with it the industry’s criminal element. Indeed, a study recently published in The Economic Journal found that after medical marijuana was legalized in California, violent crime fell 15 percent.

Talk to authorities in California’s Emerald Triangle, though, and a different story emerges. This 10,000-square-mile area (which includes Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity Counties) by some estimates grows 60 percent of the country’s marijuana. Ben Filippini, a deputy sheriff in Humboldt, told me that ever since California’s 1996 medical-marijuana initiative, violent crime in his jurisdiction has increased: “People are getting shot over this plant. All legalization did here was create a safe haven for criminals.” When I asked Trinity County’s undersheriff, Christopher Compton, what’s happened since a 2016 initiative legalized pot in the state, he said: “We haven’t seen any drop in crime whatsoever. In fact, we’ve seen a pretty steady increase.” Compton’s counterpart in Mendocino, Matthew Kendall, agreed: “We’re seeing more robberies and more gun violence.”

What’s going on? One factor is that legalization has led to a boom in the weed business, thereby increasing the supply of two things that tempt would-be thieves: the crop, and the cash it generates. The latter is particularly abundant, because while some credit unions and regional banks have begun accepting marijuana money, the big ones don’t. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, and executives fear being charged with money laundering.

A second factor: California may have legalized pot, but not all growers want to be legal. Out of some 32,000 farmers in the region, only about 3,500 had applied for a license by the end of 2017. Some insist that complying with regulations is too costly. Others are evading taxes. Running an illegal “grow,” however, leaves them especially vulnerable to “dope rips” (theft of processed marijuana), precisely because thieves know such farmers will be unwilling to file a police report. Criminal syndicates, which are involved in many of these thefts, resell much of the plunder out of state.

Which brings us to a third factor: The post-legalization boom has led pot prices in California to plummet, and increased the incentive to sell the product out of state. A pound of marijuana that in 2015 went for $ 1,200 in-state sells today for just $ 300. In New York City, though, California weed fetches up to $ 3,000 a pound. Until marijuana is legalized nationally, such price discrepancies will surely remain, and criminal gangs will find their way to the Emerald Triangle.

For now, as thefts grow more brazen, many farmers are employing new security measures. Some use a company called Hardcar Distribution to carry their cash—and their harvest—in armored vehicles operated by teams of armed military veterans. Others are converting dollars into bitcoin or precious metals. “I watch Breaking Bad and Ozark for tips,” one pot grower told me. “It’s like educational TV.”
