The Quebec native netted one for the first time on home ice against the Toronto Maple Leafs
]]>While Canadiens goalie Carey Price looked his familiar formidable self.
Game Wrap: Jonathan Drouin scores shootout winner in Habs debut1:20
Price stopped 43 shots through overtime and denied all three of Buffalo’s shootout attempts following an off-season in which he signed an eight-year, $ 84 million contract extension.
Drouin, the Quebec-born first-round draft pick acquired in an off-season trade from Tampa Bay, then put on a nifty display by scoring the lone shootout goal and adding an assist.
Driving toward the net, Drouin faked left in prompting goalie Robin Lehner to make the first move, and then zagged to his right in backhanding the puck into the open side.
“It shows you the kind of skill level he’s got,” Canadiens coach Claude Julien said about the third player selected in the 2013 draft.
If Drouin proved to be the odd-man out among a talented Lightning group of forwards, he’s quickly finding his niche on a Canadiens team in need of offence.
Montreal traded prospect defenceman Mikhail Sergachev and a conditional 2018 second-round pick to acquire Drouin in June.
“It is important for the team, two points, but for me, too,” said Drouin, who’s pass through the crease set up Max Pacioretty’s one-timer that tied it 1-1 late in the first period.
Phillip Danault forced overtime by scoring a short-handed goal on a wraparound with 11:59 left.
The Sabres blew two one-goal leads in spoiling Phil Housley’s debut as head coach and Jason Pominville’s two-goal outing in his first game back with Buffalo since being reacquired in a trade with Minnesota in June.
Housley lamented the loss, while noting he saw positive signs of the up-tempo style he’s introducing to Buffalo after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach in Nashville.
Buffalo goalie Robin Lehner (40) stops Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher (11) Thursday in Buffalo. (Jeffrey T. Barnes/Associated Press)
“We outshot the team, we out-chanced the team, we just didn’t beat them on the scoreboard,” said Housley, the Hall of Fame defenceman who broke into the NHL with Buffalo as an 18-year old in 1982. “We don’t like the result obviously, but I think we can take a lot of things from this game as we move forward.”
Buffalo took 45 shots, including 41 through three periods a year after the team topped 40 just four times.
Where Buffalo faltered was on the power play in converting just one of five opportunities. The Sabres managed one shot on goal during a two-man advantage spanning 78 seconds in the second period. And then they gave up the tying goal 42 seconds after Montreal’s Andrew Shaw was penalized for interference.
Canadiens defenceman Shea Weber gained the Sabres zone and briefly lost control of the puck before dumping it behind Buffalo’s net. Danault pounced on it and wrapped it in from the right side.
“We sort of took the foot off the gas there,” Housley said.
Buffalo is coming off a tumultuous off-season in which general manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma were fired after the team missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season. Jason Botterill took over as GM in May and a month later hired Housley.
Pominville opened the scoring with a power-play goal 8:30 into the first period and then converted Jack Eichel’s pass through the middle to put Buffalo up 2-1 in the opening minute of the second period.
The former Sabres captain spent the four-plus seasons in Minnesota before being was acquired along with defenceman Marco Scandella.

Montreal’s 2016-17 season was filled with ups and downs on the road to a first-round playoff exit. The team looked to have made serious strides after a forgettable campaign the year before, getting off to a blistering 13-1-1 start before it all came crashing down. After going 18-18-7 through the winter months, the Canadiens replaced coach Michel Therrien with Claude Julien — in a second go-around behind the Habs’ bench — in February. The move brought fresh life into the team, allowing them to finish atop a weak Atlantic Division. However, persistent issues with their inability to convert offence into goals (15th in goals scored with 223) was further exposed by the New York Rangers in the post-season. A healthy Carey Price could do little to remedy the fact that his teammates failed to score when it counted most. Captain Max Pacioretty, who led the team with 35 goals in the regular season, could only muster a single assist in the six-game opening-round loss.
Game Wrap: Rangers end Canadiens’ season with Game 6 win1:50
Surely the acquisition of a young talented player like Jonathan Drouin through a trade with Tampa Bay lessened the blow of losing Alex Radulov and Andrei Markov in free agency. At just 22, Drouin is heading into the prime of his career and the team is trying him out as a long-awaited solution to their lack of a No. 1 centre. Whether that works remains to be seen, but it’s doubtful that Montreal’s off-season acquisitions will be enough to fill the gap that Radulov and Markov left in its top power play unit. The addition of Karl Alzner won’t help much with scoring, but he’s a dependable defenceman who should slot in nicely in one of the top-two pairings.

Drouin helps ignite Montreal’s inconsistent offence alongside Pacioretty, finally providing Price with the scoring support he has needed. Adding veterans Mark Streit on defence and Ales Hemsky on offence as well as impressive training camp prospects Charles Hudon and Victor Mete help provide enough depth to stay competitive in what could be a tough Eastern Conference. They’d love to see unreliable forward Alex Galchenyuk live up to his potential, something he’s been unable to do in the five NHL seasons since being chosen third overall in 2012.
Down goes Price. We all saw how the Canadiens fell apart in 2015-16 without their MVP, who was injured for most of that season with a strained ligament in his knee. While expected backup Al Montoya was adequate last season, he won’t be able to steal Montreal games the way Price often does. But if the team can’t find a way to be reliable on the scoresheet, even Price won’t be able to bail them out.

More bad news for Canada at the world track and field championships.
Derek Drouin, the reigning world and Olympic champion in high jump, announced he was withdrawing with an Achilles tendon injury.
“I knew I was dealing with an injury that would make my chances of competing come down to the wire,” Drouin said in a statement. “My support team did everything they could to give my Achilles time to heal, we didn’t want to rush back. We just ran out of time.
“I’ve been progressing, but wasn’t able to get into championship level shape that I expect of myself.”
The news comes after three-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse was forced to pull out with a torn hamstring earlier this week.
Drouin’s Achilles tendon injury kept the 27-year-old out of the Canadian championships last month in Ottawa, and he’d been able to do little jumping off the injured foot in the weeks since.
“We really thought we’d be able to get him healthy in time,” Athletics Canada team coach Jeff Huntoon said. “The integrated support team has been tireless in their efforts in the recovery process and we’ve made progress.
“But we just ran out of time to get him healthy enough to compete in London.”
Drouin, from Corunna, Ont., won world gold in 2015 in Beijing, then followed it up with Olympic gold last summer in Rio.
Canada was hoping to improve on the record eight medals the team won at the world championships two years ago in Beijing.
Drouin’s best height this season is 2.28 metres. His Canadian record is 2.40. He’s also been training for the decathlon, with his sights set on earning a spot on the 2018 Commonwealth Games in that event, and in April, his jump of 2.28 — as part of a decathlon at the Sam Adams Combined Event Invitational — was a world’s best jump for the 10-discipline event.

Canadian high jumper Derek Drouin says he’s making steady progress from an Achilles injury in advance of his title defence at this week’s track and field world championships in London, England.
The injury forced the 2016 Olympic champion to withdraw from the Canadian nationals in early July at Ottawa after the Achilles “flared up” on June 15 at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, where Drouin tied for third with a jump of 2.25 metres. He hasn’t competed since.
“My coaches, IST [Integrated Support Team] and I decided it was in my best interest to take some time off to allow my Achilles to heal before slowly re-introducing some dynamic workouts into my training in the final stages before worlds,” Drouin told CBC Sports in an email.
Dynamic exercises are movements such as high knee lifts or side lunges you perform to prepare your body for more strenuous activity. The movements warm and loosen your muscles, thus preventing injury and improving performance.
“We have been diligent in treating the issues and things have been improving steadily,” said Drouin from Athletics Canada’s pre-worlds training camp in Spain.
Drouin, 27, said he and his coach, Jeff Huntoon, have set benchmarks he would like to meet by certain dates to prove he is competition-ready. While the event begins Friday, the high jump qualification is set for Aug. 11 and the final two days later on the final day of competition at London Stadium.
“We have been testing [the Achilles] more each day and I’m pleased with the progress,” said Drouin, a native of Sarnia, Ont. “It is my goal to arrive in London ready to defend my title, and I know what training marks will indicate that condition.”
In April, Drouin set a world record with a jump of 2.28 in the high jump portion of the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational decathlon in Santa Barbara, Calif., and is aiming to compete for Canada in decathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
At the end of the month, the six-foot-four jumper matched the world qualifying standard of 2.30 in winning a fourth consecutive Drake Relays title.
Drouin may have first injured the Achilles in mid-May at a Diamond League meet in Shanghai, where the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist failed to clear the bar at 2.20 and finished the event without a successful attempt.
In March 2011, Drouin tore two ligaments off his right foot that required two metal screws to be inserted and then removed three months later. After the Rio Olympics last August, Drouin said he competed with two stress fractures in his spine.
“As an experienced athlete who has gone through this before, I am confident in my support team and my ability to deal with less-than-favourable conditions,” said Drouin. “I have been working with many people who have a lot of experience with similar injuries [to mine].”
At the 2015 world championships, Drouin jumped 2.34 in Beijing following his victorious jump of 2.37 at the Toronto Pan Am Games.

Rio Olympic high jump champion Derek Drouin will not compete this weekend at the Canadian track and field championships due to injury. His agent, Ray Flynn, told CBC Sports that Drouin has been dealing with a minor Achilles tendon issue.
It’s unclear if the 27-year-old will compete at track and field worlds Aug. 5-13 in London, England.
Drouin last competed on June 15 at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway, where the native of Sarnia, Ont., tied for third with a jump of 2.25 metres before missing all three attempts at 2.29.
Drouin, with a personal best leap of 2.40, failed to clear the bar at 2.20 in May at a Diamond League meet in Shanghai, finishing the event without a successful attempt.
He spent much of late May and early June trying to get dialed in with his approach and raising the bar, literally, at practice “to get me ready for a championship season and hopefully a new personal best.”
In April, Drouin set a world record with a jump of 2.28 in the high jump portion of the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational decathlon in Santa Barbara, Calif., and is aiming to compete for Canada in decathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
At the end of the month, the six-foot-five jumper won a fourth consecutive Drake Relays title, matching the world qualifying standard of 2.30.
After capturing a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Drouin won Canada’s first gold in high jump since Duncan McNaughton in 1932 last August in Rio, tying his season best jump in the process by clearing 2.38.
Drouin then tried to break the Olympic record of 2.39 but missed in his single attempt at 2.40. He held up the Canadian flag, tearing up as he faced his parents and sisters in the stands.
In 2015, Drouin jumped 2.34 in Beijing to win at the world championships after his victorious jump of 2.37 at the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
]]>The Canadiens plucked the skilful 22-year-old winger from Tampa Bay on Thursday afternoon in exchange for 2016 first-round pick Mikhail Sergachev and a conditional second-round pick in 2018. The Canadiens later announced that they signed Drouin to a six-year contract extension worth a reported $ 33 million US.
“It’s just really surreal,” Drouin said at a news conference. “I’m still kind of in shock that it actually happened.”
The Lightning made the move with next week’s expansion draft and salary cap in mind.

Drouin gives the Canadiens a much-needed dose of offensive upside and creativity. The third overall pick in 2013, and native of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Que., Drouin had a career-best 21 goals and 53 points last season, including nine goals and 26 points on the power play.
He’s a speedy, shifty and skilled force on the wing (perhaps at centre too) and someone who instantly upgrades a Montreal lineup that sometimes struggled to score last season and was knocked out in the first round by the New York Rangers.
The clock is ticking on the Habs’ competitive window with Shea Weber due to turn 32 this summer, Max Pacioretty closing in on 30 and Carey Price approaching potential free agency next summer.
“My job is the same every day,” said Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin. “When I wake up I try to make this team better and for the next two weeks especially, with the crunch we’re in, I’ll try that. And you know, anything is possible.”
“Like I always say, expect the unexpected,” Bergevin added as he smiled at Drouin beside him.

The trade ends a rocky four-year tenure in Tampa for Drouin, who clashed with head coach Jon Cooper and was suspended by the club at one point following a trade request. He ultimately rejoined the group for the 2016 playoffs and piled up 14 points in 17 games. He followed that up this past season with his most productive NHL campaign.
The prospect of re-signing Drouin — along with expansion — was a likely factor in Tampa’s decision to part with him. Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has a tight rope to walk with regard to the cap in the coming weeks, with Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat also both due new deals.
“Ultimately our biggest need and our biggest goal was to acquire a puck-moving defenseman and we were able to do that,” Yzerman said on a conference call.
Trading Drouin allows Tampa, which also netted a conditional sixth-round pick in 2018, to protect one more player ahead of Wednesday’s expansion draft with protection lists due for submission on Saturday. The Lightning were faced with potentially losing promising 24-year-old centre Vladislav Namestnikov for nothing.
While Drouin is a big loss to their long-term talent pool, they get a high-upside 18-year-old defenceman in Sergachev who is exempt from selection by Las Vegas. The ninth overall pick in 2016 won the OHL’s defenceman of the year award after the 2015-16 season when he had 17 goals and 57 points in 67 games for Windsor.
The Canadiens also announced the signing of Charles Hudon to a two-year, one-way contract. The 22-year-old Alma, Que., native had 27 goals and 49 points in 56 regular-season games with the American Hockey League’s St. John’s IceCaps last season.

Expect Derek Drouin to look ahead rather than dwell on his most recent Diamond League performance.
The Canadian high jumper, with a personal best leap of 2.40 metres, failed to clear the bar at 2.20 a month ago in Shanghai and finished the event without a successful attempt.
“It’s only May,” the 2016 Olympic champion told CBC Sports last month, “and there’s a lot of work to be done before the world championships in August. Right now is all about just being competitive.”
On Thursday, Drouin will be part of a strong 11-man field at the Oslo Bislett Games in Norway (CBCSports.ca, 2 p.m. ET). Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Ukraine’s Bogdan Bondarenko, both of whom shared the podium with the Canadian at the Rio Summer Games, also will compete at the fifth Diamond League meet of the season.
It’s believed Steinar Hoen, Norway’s 1994 European indoor high jump champion who won the Bislett meeting that year by clearing 2.35, longs to see Javier Sotomayor’s 1993 world record of 2.45 broken and his Bislett Stadium mark of 2.37 shattered. So much so, he revamped the infield setup two years ago to give jumps the best chance of attacking Sotomayor’s record.
Drouin, 27, cleared 2.40 to establish a Canadian record at the 2014 Drake Relays in Iowa while Bondarenko, the 2013 world champion, has reached that height or greater six times. Barshim, who is second on the world all-time list with a clearance of 2.43, has achieved 2.40 seven times.
In late April, Drouin won a fourth consecutive Drake Relays title with a jump of 2.30, defeating fellow Canadian Mike Mason (2.27). Earlier that month, the six-foot-five jumper from Sarnia, Ont., cleared 2.28 in the high jump portion of the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational decathlon in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Mason, 30, enters Thursday’s competition with a season-best jump of 2.30, set at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on April 15.
Also worth watching Thursday is Robbie Grabarz, Britain’s 2012 European champion, and Madjd Ghazal of Syria, who cleared 2.36 last year.
Here’s a breakdown of the other Canadians in Oslo:
Andre De Grasse & Aaron Brown, men’s 100 (3:03 p.m. ET): De Grasse has shifted his focus back to the 100 after running a season-best 20.01 seconds to win in the 200 at last week’s Golden Gala in Rome. The 22-year-old is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 100 at the Prefontaine Classic, where he clocked 9.96 in late May. De Grasse opened the season with a 10.22 performance at the season-opening Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar.
De Grasse will be seeking a repeat of his 100 victory at Oslo last June (10.07) before travelling to Stockholm for Sunday’s Diamond League event (CBCSports.ca, 10 a.m. ET). His season best of 10.10 is in line with three others in Thursday’s six-man field: Great Britain’s Adam Gemili (10.08), Ben Youssef Meite of the Ivory Coast (10.10) and Switzerland’s Alex Wilson (10.11).
Brown continued a disappointing stretch last week in Rome, clocking 20.43 in the 200 after a 20.41 showing at Diamond League Shanghai in May. The Toronto native ran a season-best 10.30 in the 100 at the Grenada Invitational in St. Georges on April 8.
Melissa Bishop, women’s 800 (3:10 p.m.): She is coming off a sixth-place finish in her outdoor season debut at last month’s Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, where the native of Eganville, Ont., crossed the line in one minute 59.52 seconds. Bishop believes competing in more races and exploring the tactics will help her lower her time going forward. She set a national mark of 1:57.02 in the event at last year’s Rio Olympics, missing the podium by 0.13 seconds.
Alysha Newman, women’s pole vault (12:15 p.m.): The former hurdler from London, Ont., is coming off the most impressive performance of her pole vault career. At the recent Adidas Boost Boston Games, Newman cleared 4.60 metres on her third try to win the event, defeating former Olympic champion and U.S. record holder Jenn Suhr, 35.
Thanks @adidasBoostBos for such uplifting&competitive Street meet!Leaving Boston claiming my first boost game title & meet record of 4.60m

Newman, 22, hasn’t competed at a Diamond League meet since Doha, Qatar five weeks ago, where Newman tied for seventh with Kristen Brown of the U.S. with a distance of 4.25. In April, the All-American broke her own mark (4.61) to set a new Canadian senior outdoor record of 4.71 at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at the University of Miami.
Like De Grasse, the 2016 Olympian will compete at the BAUHAUS-galan meet in Sweden this weekend, where 83 world records have been set since 1912.
The other Canadian travelling to Stockholm is Crystal Emmanuel in the women’s 200. The 25-year-old native of Scarborough, Ont., ran a season-best 22.86 seconds on March 30 to finish second in a field of 71 at the Florida Relays in Gainesville.
Emmanuel is a two-time Olympian who advanced to the 200 semifinals in Rio last summer, finishing 23rd overall.
Last Saturday, she set a meet record in the women’s 100 at the Aileen Meagher Track Classic in Halifax, where Emmanuel’s time of 11.26 topped last year’s record run of 11.47 by Arialis Gandulla of Cuba.
CBC Sports is providing live streaming coverage of all 14 Diamond League meets this season at CBCSports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices. TV coverage will be featured as part of the network’s Road To The Olympic Games weekend broadcasts throughout the season.
The following is a list of upcoming Diamond League meets on CBCSports.ca and the CBC Sports app:
Derek Drouin has Olympic medals and world titles. Who knew he’d have time to watch reality TV? Here are five things about Derek Drouin.
]]>The reigning world and Olympic high jump champion from Corunna, Ont., will compete in his first Diamond League meet of the season on Saturday in Shanghai (you can watch live on CBCSports.ca and the CBC Sports app, beginning at 7 a.m. ET).
CBC Sports caught up with Drouin to find out what life has been like since he became an Olympic champ, and how he’s feeling going into his first Diamond League competition.
[Editor’s note: Answers have been edited for length and clarity.]
CBC Sports: How are you feeling physically and mentally going into this event?
Derek Drouin: I’m feeling about as physically prepared as I could have hoped. I’m not ready to jump at [personal-best height] bars right now, but that’s intentional. It’s only May and there’s a lot of work to be done before the world championships in August. Right now is all about just being competitive. All the fine tuning comes later. Mentally, I’m feeling confident. I’m ready to get back in the mix and start competing again.
CBC: What has life been like since winning Olympic gold last summer?
DD: It was a little bit hectic immediately following the Olympics, but obviously it was an exciting time. That being said, I tried to get back to my regular training routine and my normal, quiet life as quickly as possible.
CBC: You plan to compete in a few decathlons this season. Does that change how you train for the high jump?
DD: My decathlon training is complementing my high jump training in the same way that it always has. Not a whole lot has changed in terms of how my practices have been structured, other than the actual decathlon competitions. I feel a whole lot stronger and more confident when I step onto the high jump apron, given the type of overall training I’ve been doing.
While Drouin remains focused on the high jump, he’s also dabbling in the decathlon as a way to stay sharp. (Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian Press)
CBC: You’re the reigning Olympic and world champion. Do you feel like you have a target on your back at every event?
DD: I don’t feel any added pressure heading into meets. The way I approach every competition is to see all competitors on an even playing field. Past performances don’t matter. It’s all about who’s ready to be the best on a given day.
CBC: Are you a hockey fan, and have you been watching the NHL playoffs?
DD: I am a hockey fan. I played travel hockey my entire childhood. My favourite team is the Detroit Red Wings, so unfortunately, for the first time in my active memory, I don’t have any real investment in the NHL playoffs.
CBC: What can Canadians expect from you over the next few years? What’s the goal now for you?
DD: I’m constantly changing and re-evaluating my goals. At the moment, I’m taking things year by year, with the immediate focus being an attempt to defend my world title this August in London. Although I can’t promise anything, I will say that Canadians can expect to see me representing Canada with the same sense of pride and competitive spirit that I’ve always tried to exhibit.
