  • With guests cutting back on visits, Wingstop's new CEO explains his playbook for boosting sales.
  • One move is ending an exclusive delivery partnership with DoorDash and adding Uber Eats.
  • Last week Wingstop also entered the chicken sandwich wars, years after competitors.

Wingstop was among several tech-savvy restaurant chains that became a pandemic winner, logging more than $ 1 billion in digital sales in 2020.

But as consumers deal with record inflation this year, many are cutting back on restaurant visits. That's hurting chains like Wingstop, which installed a new chief executive, Michael Skipworth, in March. In its last earnings call in late July, the company said customer visits are down.

In an interview last week with Insider, Skipworth said he's betting on three plays to reverse that trend – entering the chicken sandwich wars, introducing bundled meal deals, and adding Uber Eats as a new delivery partner. That latter is a significant move as DoorDash has been the chain's exclusive delivery partner for years.

"We have a proven playbook," said Skipworth, who was previously Wingstop's chief operating officer and finance chief.

Skipworth explains his three-pronged approach to increasing sales at Wingstop, which operates more than 1,800 restaurants worldwide. The majority of Wingstop stores are franchised locations in the US.

Now is the right time to enter the chicken sandwich wars

Three years ago, Popeyes introduced a spicy chicken sandwich that broke the internet and launched a war with Chick-fil-A. Other national fast food chains introduced their versions of chicken sandwiches over the course of a year, including Wendy's, Sonic, and KFC.

Even Taco Bell wanted a piece of the action, launching a chicken sandwich taco in Tennessee and North Carolina in early 2021.

Wingstop didn't move on a chicken sandwich at the time because "we didn't need it," Skipworth said.

Until now.

Last week, the chain rolled out 12 chicken sandwiches offering the same flavors as their wings.

Skipworth said the company rarely adds new items to its menu. Last year, it introduced the delivery-only brand Thighstop, a supply chain hack created to save the brand from soaring chicken wing prices. Before that, he said the previous new menu item the company launched was more than a decade ago when it introduced boneless wings.

Skipworth said he expects the chicken sandwich to bring "meaningful growth" to the brand because price-conscious consumers will be excited about the value of the new menu item.

"We felt now is the right time for a chicken sandwich. We were able to leverage our size and scale and negotiate really good pricing with our strategic supplier partners," Skipworth said.

The a la carte price of Wingstop's chicken sandwich is $ 5.49. By comparison, spicy chicken sandwiches cost $ 5.29 at Chick-fil-A and $ 4.49 at Popeyes. The crispy chicken sandwich at Shake Shack cost $ 7.79, according to prices found at those restaurants in Southern California.

Wingstop expects to reach more delivery consumers with Uber Eats and DoorDash

DoorDash introduced its white-label delivery platform, DoorDash Drive, in 2016. Fast-casual chains Wingstop and Chipotle were early adopters of the program.

DoorDash delivers orders made through Wingstop's app or website for a fee.

Skipworth said that Wingstop had used DoorDash as an exclusive delivery partner since at least 2017.  He described the nation's top delivery provider as "an incredible partner for us."

But, with the "challenging backdrop in 2022," Skipworth said this summer was "a good opportunity" to look at adding another delivery operator.

Wingstop chose Uber Eats because, like DoorDash, it has been "really smart about building loyalty" to its platform through subscription services that reach millions of consumers. DoorDash's DashPass, for example, has over 10 million members globally.

"We knew there was this consumer base out there that we weren't serving today," Skipworth said of Uber Eats. "And we felt this was the right time to pull that lever in and again, bring more guests into Wingstop through the Uber platform."

While there's some overlap between consumers who use DoorDash and Uber Eats, Skipworth said the data shows that both delivery apps serve "two distinct consumer groups."

He said he doesn't expect a "meaningful impact to our existing DoorDash business."

"While it's only a couple of weeks into the Uber Eats national launch, and without any advertising support, we are encouraged by the early results," Skipworth told investors during a conference call in July.

By adding Uber Eats, Wingstop joins a fray of chains that have been breaking away from exclusive delivery partnerships to boost delivery sales. McDonald's dropped Uber Eats as an exclusive partner in 2019. During the pandemic, Chipotle added Uber Eats as a delivery partner after working with Postmates and DoorDash.

Wingstop is leaning into value deals thanks to wing deflation

Wingstop developed the virtual brand, Thighstop, last year to save money on soaring chicken wing prices, which reached $ 3.25 a pound in 2021.

By creating a thigh-focused menu, a part of the bird the company never used, Wingstop saved money by buying whole chickens from suppliers. A year later, the price per pound is now $ 1.15 as demand for chicken wings cools, causing excess inventory and deflation, the CEO said.

That is allowing Wingstop to "lean into" adding value deals to the menu, Skipworth said. One example that is driving traffic is the recently introduced Boneless Meal Deal. The $ 15.99 value meal includes 20 boneless wings and a large fry.

"We saw a marked improvement in the sales trends during the quarter," Skipworth said.

In 2021, Wingstop recorded its 18th consecutive year of same-store sales growth, a vital indicator of a company's financial health. By adding Uber Eats, leaning into value, and introducing chicken sandwiches, Skipworth said he's got a playbook that "sets the stage for 19 consecutive years of same-store sales growth."

EastEnders spoilers: New boss Kate Oates responds to rumours she's dropping the Carters https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-new-boss-kate-oates-responds-to-rumours-shes-dropping-the-carters/ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-new-boss-kate-oates-responds-to-rumours-shes-dropping-the-carters/#respond Fri, 26 Oct 2018 03:57:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-new-boss-kate-oates-responds-to-rumours-shes-dropping-the-carters/

Kate Oates let slip her massive plans for EastEnders as she takes on the role of producer following her two-year stint on Coronation Street.

The award-winning executive producer intends to tackle societal “issues”, which will predominately be character led.

Teasing the upcoming plot, Kate revealed: “There is something that I’m thinking about that the audience could say is an issues led storyline.

“I think it will be character led and the long-term arc will be character led, but there’s definitely an issue in there to discuss.”

When she worked on Coronation Street, Kate highlighted a number of hard-hitting issues, including suicide and male rape.

Although Kate hopes to create awareness surrounding important issues in EastEnders, she also wants to maximise some of its current talent, including the Carters.

Responding the claims she intends to axe the much loved family, the writer enthused: “I love the Carters.

“I always want to see them tested, but that doesn’t mean not seeing them in the Vic. I like them in the Vic and I think Danny [Dyer] and Kellie [Bright] are a brilliant soap pairing.”

She added to The Sun: “They’ve got an amazing range because as well as the drama they’re capable of such warmth and I think that’s when the audience loves them at their best, when they’re actually showing that full range.

“So no, I don’t have any kind of plans to shake that up. I’m a big fan of the Carters so no plans to get rid of them.”

Hinting she has been bonding with lead actor Danny, Katie mentioned: “Danny’s teaching me to speak cockney.”

Fans of Kate’s will have to wait until February 2019 to see her work on screen, but she did tease the Christmas special.

The British producer promised that Christmas would be “big” in Albert Square, although she remained tight-lipped about the storyline.

But she seems to have something special in store for the Sharon, Phil Mitchell and Keanu Taylor’s love triangle.

Discussing her ideas for the Mitchell clan, she shared: “We’ve got some good Mitchell stuff on the storyboard, the Phil, Keanu, Sharon stuff is all very exciting.

“We’ve got some good stuff for Tiffany [Butcher] with her having taken herself into a dark world. I’m picking up on stories that have already begun here.”

She also aims to focus on Mel Owen (Tamzin Outwaite) and the Slaters in the New Year and described the plots as “exciting”.

Kate announced she was joining EastEnders earlier this year after quitting Coronation Street, which she had worked on for six years.

The 39-year-old previously produced rival show Emmerdale and received a number of accolades for her work.

EastEnders continues tonight on BBC One at 8pm.

Leaked benchmarks show Intel is dropping hyperthreading from i7 chips https://briefnews.eu/leaked-benchmarks-show-intel-is-dropping-hyperthreading-from-i7-chips/ https://briefnews.eu/leaked-benchmarks-show-intel-is-dropping-hyperthreading-from-i7-chips/#respond Wed, 25 Jul 2018 21:57:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/leaked-benchmarks-show-intel-is-dropping-hyperthreading-from-i7-chips/

While Intel’s naming scheme for its processors is often best described as “obtuse,” there have been some patterns that the company seemed to follow. For desktop processors, the i7 branding denotes chips with hyperthreading enabled, running two threads on each core. i5-branded parts had the same number of cores but with hyperthreading disabled. i3 parts in turn had fewer cores than i5 parts, but once again with hyperthreading enabled. The 8th generation chips changed this pattern a little—the desktop i3s don’t have hyperthreading, just fewer cores—but the relationship between the i5s and i7s remained.

It looks like the next batch of Intel processors, probably branded 9th generation, is going to shake this situation up further. Benchmarks found in the SiSoft Sandra database list a Core i7-9700K processor. This increases the core count from the current six cores in the 8th generation Coffee Lake parts to eight cores, but, even though it’s an i7 chip, it doesn’t appear to have hyperthreading available. Its base clock speed is 3.6GHz, peak turbo is 4.9GHz, and it has 12MB cache. The price is expected to be around the same $ 350 level as the current top-end i7s.

For the chip that will sit above the i7-9700K in the product lineup, Intel is extending the use of its i9 branding, initially reserved for the X-series High-End Desktop Platform. The i9-9900K will be an eight-core, 16-thread processor. This bumps the cache up to 16MB and the peak turbo up to 5GHz—and the price up to an expected $ 450.

13 Reasons Why season 2: Netflix to surprise fans by dropping series two THIS weekend? https://briefnews.eu/13-reasons-why-season-2-netflix-to-surprise-fans-by-dropping-series-two-this-weekend/ https://briefnews.eu/13-reasons-why-season-2-netflix-to-surprise-fans-by-dropping-series-two-this-weekend/#respond Fri, 30 Mar 2018 17:23:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/13-reasons-why-season-2-netflix-to-surprise-fans-by-dropping-series-two-this-weekend/

The Netflix series earned itself a huge army of fans and they could be in for a surprise over the weekend.

March 31 will mark one year since the first season was released and some viewers think this will be the release date of the second series.

Fans have been speculating on Twitter and many of them believe tomorrow will be the day it finally drops.

One exclaimed: “Omg 13 reasons why season 2 is coming out March 31 tomorrow!!!”

“13 reasons why season 2 comes out on March 31??? Oh okay,” another wrote.

A third questioned: “13 Reasons Why season 2 comes out March 31???”

Although, despite fan enthusiasm, nothing has been confirmed by Netflix.

It’s also looking unlikely after fans were given the opportunity to get tickets to watch the series before it aired.

Taking place in Los Angeles, attendees must be available to watch the series for three days, Friday 30 March, Saturday 31 March, and Wednesday 4 April.

Therefore, it extends beyond the suspected release of March 31.

The programme recently unveiled a warning video starring the show’s actors to caution viewers about the controversial content of the series.

The controversial drama tackles suicide, self harm and sexual abuse.

In the video, Bryce Walker actor Justin revealed the show tackles “tough, real world issues”.

Alisha, who plays Jessica Davis, said: “If you are struggling with these issues yourself, this series may not be right for you, or you may want to watch it with a trusted adult.”

Dylan Minnette, who plays Clay, echoed: “If you ever feel you need someone to talk with, reach out to a friend.

“Call a helpline, or go to 13reasonswhy.info.”

The sexual abuse Jessica suffered at the hand of Bryce is set to take play a “central part” in the new series.

Showrunner Brian Yorkey revealed to Radio Times: “Jessica in particular, her experience continues to be a central part of season two.

“We wanted very much to look at her recovery. To look at what it is to go from being a victim of sexual assault to being a survivor of sexual assault.

“We look at the ways that sexual assault has been perpetrated over a number of years, has been in fact documented.

“Also the ways in which the institutions, the athletics department, Liberty High School itself, are in some ways complicit in letting that happen.”

13 Reasons Why is expected to return to Netflix later this year.

Porsche Clarifies “Diesel Is Dead” Statement, Isn’t Dropping Diesel Entirely https://briefnews.eu/porsche-clarifies-diesel-is-dead-statement-isnt-dropping-diesel-entirely/ https://briefnews.eu/porsche-clarifies-diesel-is-dead-statement-isnt-dropping-diesel-entirely/#respond Thu, 22 Feb 2018 10:17:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/porsche-clarifies-diesel-is-dead-statement-isnt-dropping-diesel-entirely/ 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo

–

There was little surprise at the recent news that Porsche had axed its last remaining diesel vehicles in Europe, with the diesel versions of the Macan and Panamera being withdrawn from sale. It was a move in keeping with the tide of history; the Dieselgate scandal has affected sales of compression-ignition engines on both sides of the Atlantic, and Porsche’s adoption of the technology came more from market pressure than from any great enthusiasm for it.

–

Yet, it seems, those reports were wrong—or at least premature. Porsche in Great Britain, the source of the original report, has released a clarifying statement that it is still planning a diesel version of the new Cayenne.

–

“Currently, the demand for diesel models is falling, whereas interest in [gasoline] and hybrid models is increasing significantly,” the company’s statement said. “In light of these facts, Porsche has adapted its product planning. This decision means that Porsche currently does not offer any vehicles with diesel engines. However, it does not mean a diesel exit at Porsche. As announced, the new Cayenne is set to feature a diesel powertrain. The exact time of the market launch is not yet clear.”

–

–

Which is good news for Europe’s lovers of frugal luxury SUVs but of little direct bearing to those of us on the other side of the Atlantic. The Volkswagen Group has already said it won’t be bringing any of its diesel engines back to the States, and Porsche exclusively uses VW-sourced diesel powerplants.

Shoppers are dropping hundreds of dollars on things that used to be considered too ugly to wear — here are the worst examples https://briefnews.eu/shoppers-are-dropping-hundreds-of-dollars-on-things-that-used-to-be-considered-too-ugly-to-wear-here-are-the-worst-examples/ https://briefnews.eu/shoppers-are-dropping-hundreds-of-dollars-on-things-that-used-to-be-considered-too-ugly-to-wear-here-are-the-worst-examples/#respond Tue, 13 Feb 2018 13:43:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shoppers-are-dropping-hundreds-of-dollars-on-things-that-used-to-be-considered-too-ugly-to-wear-here-are-the-worst-examples/ Balenciaga crocsBalenciaga

  • Consumers are spending hundreds of dollars on “ugly” clothes and accessories.
  • Shoppers are favoring more comfortable, practical clothing, and dressing ugly has become ironic.
  • We’ve rounded up some of the ugliest products to be released in the past year.

Ugly fashion is here to stay.

The trend of dressing in ugly clothing and accessories hit its peak in 2017, and it shows no signs of slowing down in 2018.

There are two reasons for this: first, consumers are increasingly favoring comfortable clothing and shoes, which is why practical brands Birkenstock and Crocs are having a comeback.

“It happens every several years” David Kahan, CEO of Birkenstock USA, told Fast Company back in 2016. “The planets line up and Birkenstocks become fashionable again.”

Similarly, after falling out of favor around 10 years ago, Crocs’ core product, the classic clog, is back in vogue.

“The classic clog has re-emerged as our hero,” Terence Reilly, Crocs’ chief marketing officer, told The Washington Post.

The second reason is that ugly products have become so ironic that they’re now trendy, thanks to designer brands launching their own ugly clothing items. It’s an excellent marketing ploy — these unappealing products with large price tags create a backlash and subsequent buzz on social media.

Take a look at some of the products that best exemplify the ugly trend:

Balenciaga’s triple-soled sneakers, $ 850

Balenciaga

Don’t be fooled — these are not hiking shoes. The bulky sole is purely a fashion statement, which is crafted by combining three different molds taken from running, basketball, and track shoes.

The sneakers have been worn by many celebrities, including Bella Hadid, and are now sold-out online.

Y/Project and Ugg collaboration

Twitter/@ernahreins

Ugg boots are back in vogue.

In January, fashion brand Y/Projects partnered with Ugg to create a thigh-high version of the boot. Since then, Rihanna and Sienna Miller have been snapped in the classic style of Ugg boots, according to Vogue.

Ugg has been pulling out equally dubious styles on its own to progress from its classic look. A pair of limited-edition flame boots, designed with Jeremy Scott, are being sold for around $ 400 at different stores online.

VETEMENTS X Reebok high-top sock sneakers, $ 840

Matches Fashion

This is a new kind of high-top sneaker. These men’s sneakers were trialed in a Hong Kong pop-up in November but are now available online.

US professor sued for dropping ‘Nazi’ bomb in spat with German airport police https://briefnews.eu/us-professor-sued-for-dropping-nazi-bomb-in-spat-with-german-airport-police/ https://briefnews.eu/us-professor-sued-for-dropping-nazi-bomb-in-spat-with-german-airport-police/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 23:53:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-professor-sued-for-dropping-nazi-bomb-in-spat-with-german-airport-police/ An American professor is being sued for slander by German police who allege she called their colleague a ‘f**king Nazi’ during a heated argument about carry-on liquids at Frankfurt International Airport.

C. Christine Fair, an associate professor at Georgetown University, got into the argument when airport police told her she had too many liquids in her carry-on baggage. As the 49-year-old outlined in a lengthy article on Huffington Post the row escalated over a ‘Lady Speed Stick’ deodorant which the police confiscated because they said the professor had too many liquids.

Fair argued that the deodorant was a solid and not a liquid and, despite risking missing her flight, she tried to make a complaint to customer service.

During the heated exchange the police allege that she called them “f**king German Nazi police” and “f**king bastards”. However Fair, who works for the Rand Corporation, insists she never called the officers Nazis. She admits she did use the word Nazi, but claims she was referring to a man behind her in the line who had a “Hitler youth haircut.”

“The crack German police have seized my deodorant … but they don’t seem to care about that Nazi-looking dude over there!” she claims to have said.

While there’s no law against calling someone a Nazi, the problem for the professor is that under German law slander is a criminal offense.

“Saying ‘Nazi’ implies unscrupulous acts and barbarism,” law professor Manfred Heinrich told Die Welt. “You could call it overly sensitive. But in Germany most people don’t want to be put into that category. Those were terrible things that happened and people don’t want to be compared to that.”

Professor Fair was hit with criminal proceedings on suspicion of defamation and had to pay a $ 260 (€207) bill to cover any subsequent legal expenses.

As well as penning the 4,000-word Huffington Post article she has continued her criticism of the police on Twitter. On Thursday she repeatedly referred to officers by their names, labelled them “corrupt” and accused them of perjury.

“This was the most extraordinary case of police corruption I’ve personally witnessed … and I travel throughout Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc,” Fair wrote.

She also hit back at people who criticized her handling of the situation, labelling them “trolls.”

The police ignored most of her allegations saying: “Your case will be checked. We do not comment on ongoing investigations. Please respect the Netiquette using this channel and avoid public allegations.”
