A surge in the dollar has hammered other currencies such as the euro.

  • The euro dropped below $ 0.99 for the first time in two decades after Russia halted the flow of natural gas.
  • A surge in the dollar piled pressure on other major currencies, with investors flocking towards the "safe-haven" asset.
  • Analysts expect the eurozone economy to tip into a recession in the coming months as the energy crisis bites.

The euro has dropped below $ 0.99 for the first time in two decades after Russia halted the flow of natural gas through a key pipeline, intensifying the risk of a deep recession.

The currency of the 19-member eurozone was down 0.44% to $ 0.991 on Monday morning. It had earlier fallen to $ 0.988, its lowest level since the fall of 2002.

Fears about the global economy sent investors flocking towards the dollar, which is seen as a safe-haven asset. The dollar index was up 0.46% to a 20-year high of 110.04.

Russia announced it was halting the flow of natural gas to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline indefinitely on Friday, after closing it for maintenance on Wednesday.

State-owned company Gazprom said it would pause flows until it fixed an oil leak in a turbine. Yet many analysts noted the suspension came after G7 finance ministers finalized a deal to try to cap Russian oil prices.

Tensions in Europe have been running extremely high since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

Prior to Wednesday, Russia had already slashed the flow of natural gas through Nord Stream 1, which runs into Germany, to just 20% of capacity. The squeeze on energy supplies has sent both natural gas and electricity prices skyrocketing, although they fell last week.

Friday's closure sent natural gas prices soaring back towards record highs on Monday. Dutch TTF natural gas futures, the European benchmark price, were up 32.61% on Monday to 276.50 euros ($ 274 per megawatt hour), putting them on track for their biggest daily increase since May.

Many analysts and economists now expect the eurozone economy to fall into a recession in the coming months as households and businesses cut back on their energy use. That's weighed heavily on the euro, which was down almost 13% from $ 1.137 at the start of the year.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes have pulled investors back towards dollar assets, sending the greenback soaring and crushing other major currencies. The dollar index has surged roughly 15% this year.

"Offering 2.3% overnight deposit rates and backed by near energy independence and a relatively strong US economy, it should not be a surprise to see the dollar remaining bid," said Chris Turner, strategist at ING.

Britain's pound has also come under heavy pressure as the country struggles with its own energy crisis. The pound was down 0.23% to $ 1.148 Monday, and has dropped more than 15% since the start of January.

Naaem Aslam, a strategist at trading platform Avatrade, said: "it seems like traders are losing their faith when it comes to the Euro-dollar or Sterling-dollar."

He added: "Consumers are struggling every day and worried about their energy bills. There is no short fix for this, given the nature of the economic health of the EU and UK, and a major disaster could be on the horizon."

RELATED STORIES

Monday’s episode of The Good Doctor marked a major milestone for Shaun and Lea — one that promises to radically alter the trajectory of their relationship.

At the start of the hour, Lea’s car was seized by a sleazy tow truck operator named Tricky, who refused to cut her any slack for having her vintage automobile parked in someone else’s spot. St. Bonaventure’s heroic head of IT insisted the spot belonged to her, but Shaun refused to lie on his girlfriend’s behalf.

Later that day, Lea skipped lunch to gather dirt on Tricky. In her office, she explained to Shaun why she was so upset. “I turned to my boyfriend for support and he hung me out to dry,” she said. “This isn’t about honesty — this is about having my back. We’re a team now, working together for a common goal. Right now, our goal is to get my car back.”

Shaun eventually handed his phone over to Lea so she could create dozens of phony Yelp accounts and draft enough bad reviews to drive Tricky’s Towing out of business, should it come to that. The following night, she and Shaun confronted Tricky at the impound lot, where Lea threatened to publish each and every one of her anonymous complaints. But before things went any further, Shaun agreed to pay whatever it cost to get the car back — or so it seemed. He dropped his backpack and followed Tricky into his office, leaving Lea the keys to her cherry-red ride so she could sneak off and retrieve it before Tricky noticed. Once she got a move on, Shaun hightailed it out of the office and ran towards the moving vehicle, hopping in before Tricky had a chance to catch up to him.

Back at home, Shaun revealed to Lea that he had in fact left $ 250 on Tricky’s desk — the minimum payment required to make sure Tricky wouldn’t retaliate. He told her that she had been a bit “crazy” the last two days, and he needed to help her distinguish right from wrong. That’s when Lea came forward and acknowledged the reason for her erratic behavior.

“I have been a bit crazy, but it wasn’t about the car,” she said. “Two days ago, I found out— Shaun, I’m pregnant.”

The big reveal was met with total silence by Shaun, whose facial expression was a bit hard to decipher. He was clearly at a loss for words, but he also looked… kinda happy? He certainly didn’t look upset.

Elsewhere in the episode…

The Good Doctor 4x11 - Elizabeth Mitchell as Dannie Miller* Shaun and Morgan treated Dannie Miller (Lost and Once Upon a Time vet Elizabeth Mitchell), whose cancerous tumor bathed her brain in dopamine and woke her from a 10-year coma. The awakening was short lived, but long enough for Dannie to sign a DNR and tell her dearly devoted husband Elias (Instinct‘s Michael B. Silver) that it was time for to move on with his life.

* Glassman returned to operating room to perform a life-altering procedure on Jeffrey Williams (Firefly Lane‘s Michael Taylor), a 21-year-old with ankylosing spondylitis. Glassman needed two residents to assist him and Andrews — but first, the residents’ skills were put to the test. Claire secured the first slot, followed by Asher, who beat out fellow first years Jordan and Enrique, as well as (oof) Park.

The Good Doctor 4x11 - Morgan and Park* Park was so disappointed in himself that he polished off the last of Morgan’s ice cream. Morgan, who was also down in the dumps, returned to the apartment to drown her sorrows in some Cherry Garcia, only to discover that her roommate got to it first. The two wound up bonding over their no-good, very bad days, and Morgan helped Park see what he should have done differently when during his surgical skills test. In turn, Park returned home the following night with a fresh pint of Ben and Jerry’s for his roommate. What followed were some lingering stares (see photo, attached right) that would seem to confirm the inevitable: Park and Reznick are totally going to get. it. on. Not immediately or anything, but c’mon: It’s gonna happen.

* Oh, and not that we needed any more proof, but Claire can sang. Her rendition of The Highwomen’s “Crowded Table” was just sublime, and the perfect soundtrack to that life-changing moment for Lea and Shaun.

Andrew Neil admitted he was left in disbelief listening to Westminster SNP leader Ian Blackford defend Nicola Sturgeon on Good Morning Britain this morning. GMB host Piers Morgan demanded Ian Blackford answer whether Ms Sturgeon should resign if it is found that she broke the ministerial code. During the interview, Mr Blackford refused to even consider this possibility and vehemently denied that she had.

Mr Neil insisted Mr Blackford was “economical with the truth” in his defence against Ms Sturgeon.

Emmerdale spoilers: Aaron Dingle’s new love interest to be Mackenzie after clue dropped? https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-aaron-dingles-new-love-interest-to-be-mackenzie-after-clue-dropped/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-aaron-dingles-new-love-interest-to-be-mackenzie-after-clue-dropped/#respond Tue, 29 Dec 2020 21:11:31 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-aaron-dingles-new-love-interest-to-be-mackenzie-after-clue-dropped/

Emmerdale fans saw Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller) turn on his family tonight after Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) tried to pull the wool over his eyes. In a bid to tempt the scrapyard manager into joining him and Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) in shifting a load of stolen goods, Mackenzie flirted with Aaron, dangling the possibility of a romance. But, Aaron saw right through his devious plan leaving the newcomer furious. However, some of those watching at home think the two could end up together despite Mackenzie getting into bed with Charity and Aaron exposing him.

The actor who plays Aaron has previously spoken out about his character having a new love interest.

And Ben (Simon Lennon) was introduced – an outdoor pursuits instructor working at the HOP – who Aaron went to school with.

It soon emerged that Aaron once bullied Ben for being gay, only to find out years later his enemy and him share one thing in common; their interest in same sex.

Deeply ashamed of his past behaviour, Emmerdale viewers saw Aaron try and make amends wth Ben, hoping their connection was going to be the start of something special.

But his previous mistake was thrown in his face when Ben’s ex tormented him, and Aaron made a hasty retreated.

The newcomer hasn’t been seen since, but with Mackenzie now making a move – albeit to get Aaron on side for his dodgy deal – fans have been driven to speculation.

Walking into the cafe and sitting down opposite Aaron, Mackenzie said: “Thanks for helping us out.”

“Never could resist a damsel in distress,” Aaron replied and the newcomer continued: “I wouldn’t have said Charity was in distress.”

“I wasn’t talking about her,” those watching at home saw the scrapyard manager remark.

Thinking he was succeeding in his plan, in a later scene, Mackenzie arrived at Charity’s cottage.

“Thought I told you to stay away?” She exclaimed as he walked through her back door.

“Didn’t you get Aaron’s text?” He asked and explained: “He said to meet us here at dinner time. The buyer got cold feet, so I persuaded Aaron to shift the parts for us. Well, you told me to keep him sweet. Charity, we’re rolling in it, try and be happy about it.”

“I suppose he’ll want a cut?” Charity asked and the newcomer responded: “Well, we can’t begrudge the lad that. Beside, now he’s on board, he could be useful to us.”

Aaron then walked in and placed a £10 note down: “Right, there you go, that’s us quits. Call it compensation for your loss.

“Them parts, I might have crushed them. Alright, I did crush them. Something you need to learn about me mate, I don’t like being taken for a mug.”

Taking to Twitter to comment, one said: “Glad that Aaron  hasn’t fallen for Mackenzie  and his bs #Emmerdale.”

“Aaron was great in this episode and that’s all I need to say. #Emmerdale,” someone else remarked.

A third added: “Ha Ha Ha Well done Aaron! #Emmerdale.”

“Didn’t rate Alison when she presented it, awkward to watch. I’ll give Fridays a miss, really enjoy watching Eamonn and Ruth present,” a viewer commented.

A tweet read: “Eamonn & Ruth are a class-act – very polished, professional incisive and amusing. Why change a winning combination? Very sad!”

“Not a good decision, Eamonn & Ruth are national icons, they have a huge following & are well respected. I’m a big fan of Dermot would be an excellent replacement for Philip Schofield who time is really up! Alas, Alison is not a TV show anchor, viewing numbers will go down…” Someone mentioned.

“The media is changing, be part of it. The MSM will be wondering where their ratings are going. I can see an Eamonn and Ruth show on the horizon,” Another suggested.

This recap contains spoilers from Episode 10 of DC’s Stargirl (which premieres new episodes Monday on DC Universe and Tuesday on The CW).

This week on DC’s Stargirl, while Barbara struggled to process her daughter’s super secret, Courtney untangled a family tie before embarking on a rescue mission for a semi-inanimate friend.

In a flashback to two years ago, we see how Barbara and Pat first met — both ordering, and ultimately sharing, a banana split at the diner in Blue Valley, where Barbara was selling her late mother’s house. Cut to the present and a far less sweet mood, as Barbara wonders, “What the hell is going on?!” in her basement, where Court is holding the glowing Cosmic Staff. Pat attempts a detailed download, but Court jumps in to claim that her father was a superhero until Jordan Mahkent killed him, and now she is claiming her birthright. Apoplectic, Barbara insists that Starman was not Courtney’s dad, before ordering the teen to her room. Babs then leans into “sidekick” Pat, contending that their marriage has been a lie. And once she confirms that Court was in no car accident, she sends Pat packing: “Get out of this house.”

Over at the hospital, we realize that Henry Sr. has no memory of the past 10 years — his wife Merry’s death, by drowning in a pool, included. But he discovers that Junior inherited his gift, and promises to help the lad navigate this frightening ability. When Sr. goes to sleep, Junior hears him thinking about “Merry… Starman… last day.” Junior dashes home to cue up Dad’s tape from the last day of his lab notes. “My wife is dead. Just like that,” Sr. remarks on the tape. He describes Merry, whom he met during a bank heist, as as “the girl of a thousand gimmicks,” and someone who stunned him with her pure thoughts” — to a degree that it made him question Jordan and the larger mission. But Jordan led the JSA to them, and the ISA killed the heroes, including Merry’s brother aka Starman! “I knew she would never forgive me,” Sr. said, and he hoped his missus would go into hiding. “But she didn’t,” he says, cursing out Jordan. “There are no more good thoughts to be found. Mary is dead.”

As Pat skulks off to crash at his garage, a concerned Mike insists on coming with. Meanwhile, the Cosmic Staff wakes up Courtney, but she rebuffs its invitation and orders it back to the crate. Instead, the staff zips over to Pat’s bulletin board with the ISA suspects and analyzes Icicle. Jordan himself meanwhile pays Sr. a visit at the hospital, saying that with Dr. Ito’s machine ready, all they need is his very special brainpower to reshape people’s thoughts en masse. The Cosmic Staff then shows up stag and tries to zap Jordan, but Sr. blocks it with his telekinesis. Frozen in its tracks, the staff is then literally frozen by Jordan, who then takes it and leads Sr. off to Dr. Ito’s lab to get his memory back.

Stargirl 1x10 juniorWhen Court realizes the staff is missing, she freaks out to her mom, but Barbara is having none of it. She reiterates that Starman was not her father, before announcing that they will be leaving Blue Valley soon as she gets back from the office. Alerted by Court, Pat asserts that he needs to get Barbara away from the American Dream building ASAP, so he runs over to her office. Courtney meanwhile has an awkward moment with Mike, who guilt-trips her over not sharing what is going on with their folks, before she heads into town and gets hailed by Junior. He relays all that he has learned — that his dad is awake, and his mom was Starman’s sister. “You’re my cousin?!” asks Court, before giving Junior a big hug. Junior reveals that Jordan has the Cosmic Staff, and that his dad doesn’t remember the past 10 years. Court wants her staff back, and Junior wants to save his Dad (believing that his mother was in the midst of turning him good), so they agree to team up.

Barbara is packing up her office some when she thinks to email Sam Kurtis about “Your Daughter, Courtney,” saying: “Please contact me.” Pat shows up a bit later to warn his wife, “You can’t be here” in “the most dangerous place in town.” Jordan just then swings by with his parents to drop off a ‘thank you” gift for dinner the other night. After they leave, Barbara reveals to Pat that she recorded the parents speaking in Norwegian. Over dinner at the diner, Barbara uses an app to translate the recording, which says in part, “Once the machine is on, everything will change.” Back at Barbara’s office, meanwhile, we see that Sam Kurtis has replied to her email….

After some deserved squabbling about allying with Brainwave’s son, Rick, Yolanda and Beth agree to suit up with Court and Junior and head into the tunnels. Once there, they split up, with Rick and Beth soon coming upon the cell holding Solomon Grundy — aka the thing that killed Rick’s parents. Court, Yolanda and Junior meanwhile arrive at Dr. Ito’s lab, where Sr. is strapped to a table and hooked up to some memory gizmo. While still-imprisoned Cindy fruitlessly begs to be let out and kill Stargirl herself (LOL), a fight breaks out between the teen heroes and Snap Dragon King’s minions. The kids hold their own, leading Ito himself to enter the fray and take on Stargirl. But just when he goes for the kill, Yolanda breaks the Cosmic Staff free from its own cage and slips it to Courtney, who zaps her attacker. Angered, Dragon King rips off his mask, revealing his monstrous face. Junior meanwhile frees his dad… except Sr. already has his memory back, and is just fine with the sinister status quo. More so, he wants Junior to join him!

The kids bolt for the exit, only to eventually run into a set of prison bars. Rick, who had to be forced to give up on getting at Grundy, uses his strength to bend open the bars long enough for Beth to slip through, but then Brainwave shows up and uses his own power to close ’em up again. With an assist from Junior’s bean, Rick opens the bars back up and Hourman first slips through, after which Junior uses his power to force Courtney to go through next. Now alone on the bad side of the bars, Junior faces off with his father, but he is no match. After clarifying that it was he, and not Icicle, who killed Merry back in the day, Sr. chooses villainy over family once again and KO’s his kid with a barrage of rubble, before crashing the tunnel roof down on top of him. But not before Junior gets off a final “I am sorry” to ex-GF Yolanda.

Speaking about his character’s death, Duncan told the publication: “I found out just before the beginning of the season.”

He then explained that, although his character was killed off in the franchise’s second book, he was initially brought on for much longer.

“I was optioned for six seasons,” he revealed. “But yeah, it kind of finally ran its course, and they dropped the bomb on me before we started filming the season.”

Thankfully, Murtagh saw five incredible seasons at the helm of the Fraser clan, alongside his godson Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Flesh and Blood ITV: Mary’s motive rumbled as fans notice ‘seeds of doubt’ dropped https://briefnews.eu/flesh-and-blood-itv-marys-motive-rumbled-as-fans-notice-seeds-of-doubt-dropped/ https://briefnews.eu/flesh-and-blood-itv-marys-motive-rumbled-as-fans-notice-seeds-of-doubt-dropped/#respond Tue, 25 Feb 2020 23:43:28 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/flesh-and-blood-itv-marys-motive-rumbled-as-fans-notice-seeds-of-doubt-dropped/

Flesh and Blood was back with the second instalment of the thrilling four-part drama airing on ITV. Over the next two evenings, viewers will come closer to finding out which family member died and who was the cold-blooded killer. However, during tonight’s episode, those watching at home were left confused by some of the comments Mary was making. Is she setting the scene for the murder and framing someone else?

Set on the Sussex coast, the story follows a modern family as it spirals towards a tragedy and possible crime.

In a series of flashbacks and present-day scenes, widowed mother Vivien (played by Francesca Annis) reveals her new love interest, Mark (Stephen Rea) to her children.

But “nosey neighbour” Mary (Imelda Staunton) has raised a few suspicions with her shady behaviour and last night, viewers were convinced she has something to do with the crime.

However, it seems she is not working alone, with some suggesting she and Mark are in cahoots with one another.

After decades of living within metres of the sea, Vivien decided she was going to sell the family home in which her three children grew up in.

Understandably, her offspring were not delighted by the idea, but nevertheless, they each set about moving their belongings out of the property.

When it was Jake’s (Russell Tovey) turn, he popped by Mary’s to ask her if he could keep a few boxes at her house, and during the conversation, the neighbour began planting seeds of doubt.

“Hi, knock knock,” Jake said and Mary replied welcomingly: “Hello!”

“Mary, how are you? Could I leave these with you for a few weeks?” He asked and Mary said: “Of course you can! How are things? With Leyla?”

“Yes… I think we’re getting there. I think, hope. There is quite a few more of those [bags],” Jake added.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. Such a shame though that you mum’s move isn’t it?” The neighbour commented.

“But it’s not done yet Mary, we’ve still got time to turn that ship around,” Jake remarked, but Mary wasn’t convinced: “I don’t know about that, not with her new car if it’s anything to do by! He’s obviously done well for himself hasn’t he?”

Jake said: “It’s a bit too flashy for my liking,” and Mary continued: “Although, I suppose he could have bought it on credit couldn’t he? Well, people do don’t they these days, ‘buy now, pay later’. Whereas we always had to save up for things. Anyway, get your bags, I’ll put the kettle on.”

This wasn’t the only occasion, near the end of the instalment, Natalie (Lydia Leonard) arrived at the house to grab her things and took the opportunity to ask Mary a favour.

“Mary, can I ask you a favour – it’s about mum,” she said and Mary replied: “She’s in Spain with her boyfriend?”

“Only he’s not her boyfriend, he’s her husband now,” Natalie explained which shocked Mary to the core.

“Yes, they got married in Gibraltar. I know, we all feel the same. Do you mind keeping an eye on her? We’re all a bit concerned it’s happened so fast. Call me if anything’s not quite right, thanks Mary,” the youngest child said.

Natalie then walked back to her car, put a box in the boot and buckled up, but before she drove off, Mary emerged at the driver’s window and suspiciously asked: “Natalie, I’m just wondering, what did his [Mark’s] first wife die of?”

Taking to Twitter to discuss the possible theories, one said: “Mary is planting seeds of doubt in the children’s head so it looks like they all planned it together to murder him #FleshAndBlood.”

“#FleshAndBlood love how the neighbour is planting seeds of doubt with each of them, he just happened to be there when she was Ill, nicking the blueys and mentioning getting the car on credit…..is she a goodie or a baddie?” Someone else questioned.

A third surmised: “#FleshAndBlood Mark and Mary in it together? Mary poisoning Vivienne? Was Mary the dead husband’s lover? Mark’s wife Vivienne’s husband’s lover? Mark Vivienne’s husband’s lover? Ohhh so many possibilities …..”

“Nah I’m right Mary and Mark are in this plot together #FleshAndBlood,” another stated.

Flesh and Blood returns tomorrow evening at 9pm on ITV.
