Goldman Sachs has cut its year-end target for the S&P 500, predicting the benchmark US stock index will fall 4.2% as the Federal Reserve sticks to its aggressive tightening.
The Wall Street bank dropped the benchmark's three-month target from 4,300 to 3,600, and warned that the US central bank's fast pace of interest rate hikes will likely lead to further stock selloffs before the end of 2022.
"The expected path of interest rates is now higher than we previously assumed, which tilts the distribution of equity market outcomes below our prior forecast," the bank's strategists said in a note to clients Thursday.
"The S&P 500 index actually reached our previous year-end target of 4,300 in mid-August, but the rate complex has subsequently shifted dramatically," added the team, led by chief US equity strategist David Kostin.
US stocks slipped after the Fed on Wednesday hiked interest rates by an outsized 75 basis points for the third time in a row. The S&P 500 closed 0.84% lower at 3,757.99 on Thursday, after hitting a two-month low of 3,749.35 during that session.
Investors have fretted about the interest rate hikes because of their potential impact on economic growth.
The Goldman Sachs team warned the S&P 500 could fall as low as 3,400 if earnings of its listed companies decline and the Fed's attempts to curb red-hot inflation lead to a "hard landing", where the US suffers a recession.
"The outlook is unusually murky. The forward paths of inflation, economic growth, interest rates, earnings, and valuations are all in flux more than usual, with a wider distribution of potential outcomes," they said.
But in the near term, Goldman Sachs expects investors will turn their focus to corporate earnings. In the third-quarter earnings season, record-high profit margins will be closely examined, its team said.
Stock investors have come round to the view that a hard landing for the US economy is inevitable, Goldman Sachs said, based on discussions with clients.
"Most portfolio managers believe that in order to corral inflation, the Fed will have to hike rates sufficiently high that it will result in a US recession at some point during 2023," Kostin's team said.
The bank's strategists said its higher interest rate scenario implies the S&P 500 will still be at 3,600 in six months, but should rise 6% to 4,000 in 12 months.
Goldman Sachs expects another 75 basis point hike at the Fed's November meeting, followed by a 50 basis point rise in December. A hike of 25 basis points in February means policymakers are aiming to raise interest rates to between 4.5% and 4.75%.

“That’s what’s going to hurt its value. It needs a lot of restoration work,” John warned. “At auction something like this £10,000.”
“Wow, really. Aw, it is like a family member. Would you sell a family member? I don’t know,” the owner said.
“I was just really interested to find out what it was, where it was used,” she added.
“It was amazing to see it in front of the house because it looks so at home.”

This year’s New Year’s celebrations were like none other before as millions were told to stay home and avoid large gatherings by Boris Johnson in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. While this meant many people had to celebrate bringing in 2021 from within their own homes, the BBC still aired its annual New Year’s Eve countdown, complete with a fireworks display and a performance from singer Alicia Keys.
However, despite the fact millions were forced to the confines of their own houses, the BBC suffered dwindling ratings for its New Year’s celebrations compared to 2019.
In figures obtained by The Sun Online, this year’s countdown managed to bring in 10.8 million viewers.
However, this was hundreds of thousands fewer than the number who tuned in to watch 2019’s celebrations which raked in 11.2 million.
2019 and 2020 saw the BBC’s New Year’s celebrations continue to follow the trend of dwindling ratings as 2018 had peaked at 13.3 million people.

“You couldn’t just have a nice fireworks display, it had to be political, virtue signalling, woke, Neo Marxist nonsense,” one furious viewer said on Twitter.
“Putting that aside for £1.5 million of tax payers money @SadiqKhan @BorisJohnson I think we were robbed, it really was lacklustre.”
A second echoed: “I remember a time when a firework display was just a firework display and not a party political broadcast on behalf of the BLM party endorsed by the Mayor of London and the BBC.”
While a third added to the debate: “Well the BBC and City of London clearly pushed a f**k ton of left-wing political activism in their new year’s celebration firework display.”
The episode title reads: “Daniel Espinoza: Naked and Afraid”.
The caption reads: “What are you doing to us, @MikeCosta?!? Why is he NAKED? And Afraid? #lucifer”
Fans quickly flooded the comments section desperately trying to uncover why Dan could be “naked” and “afraid”.
Many have predicted this could be because he’s finally found out the truth about Lucifer.

Viewers quickly took to Twitter to pay tribute to the legendary character.
One fan tweeted: “I went rewatch that funeral because I wanna torture myself and it hits even harder the 2nd time. #vikings #Vikings6 I will never recover. @KatherynWinnick thank you for honoring Lagertha, the greatest Shield maiden. This was excellent. Superb.”
A second fan added: “What a great episode! Lagertha getting a sad, but perfect funeral. Really showed what she meant to everyone. #Vikings6 #vikings”

Taking to Instagram, user @noahschhnapp explained his theory referencing the film Interstellar: “It all starts at ST 1 where Clarke does the same explanation of the portal.
“But add The Flea and the Acrobat. Acrobat needs a portal to enter upside down.
“If you paid attention in the series you know that the monster dies when the portal closes.”
The fan theorises that the explosion during The Battle of Starcourt Mall didn’t actually kill Hopper, instead it transported him in time.
“In the movie Interestellar it happens that we have a flea that walks between dimensions after an accident. It interacts in both worlds through time-space at random.”
The fan concluded: “Hopper is lost in space-time, where he has already transited between the two worlds, helping throughout the show in small acts.”
Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.

It would be the height of drama if television bosses decided to shut the Street or Albert Square for good. But TV commentator Mark Lawson suggested they could do just that when he said the end was in sight for the nation’s biggest soaps. Perhaps, though, he was only articulating what many viewers have been thinking. After all, there are only so many rapes, murders and love triangles that can take place in relatively small geographical areas over a given period of time.
He told Radio Times that there are only a handful of women in EastEnders that have not been the victims of rape and the bodycount on all the major soaps rises higher with every passing month.
TV schedules without Coronation Street seem unthinkable as it approaches its 60th year, but viewing figures are down from 20 million-plus in the 1980s to a mere six million today. EastEnders dropped to an unthinkable 2.91 million viewers for one episode in the summer.
That means decreasing revenues set against ever-increasing production costs as writers seek to create more sensational stories including catastrophic fires and plane disasters.
Cast numbers have exploded from a stable of around 25 regulars to between 60 and 70 today, pushing wage bills ever higher. That huge list of characters needed to fill the extra hours of broadcast has also left viewers baffled.
Increasing from the traditional two to six weekly episodes for Coronation Street and Emmerdale and four for EastEnders, leaves fans struggling to identify with so many different faces.

It all does sound pretty gloomy.
But one senior ITV executive I spoke to doesn’t think things are so bad, and as a former soap producer he knows what he’s talking about.
He told me: “It’s all down to the ratings. As long the soaps continue to occupy say, at least 10 out of the top 15 slots in the ratings for any one week, they are doing their job, which is to attract solidly high audiences during early-peak and peak times, delivering a large foundation audience for the rest of the evening output.
“All audiences are down because of the proliferation of channels and new platforms, but the soaps’ relative popularity remains high.
“What would be interesting to watch is if one of the big broadcasters cracks and cancels one of their big soaps.
“Will others follow, or will they relish the less-crowded market and invest in their own favourite? It’ll take a brave programme controller to cancel any of the big serials.”
It has happened before, though.
Channel 4’s Brookside ended in 2003 after 21 years when producers simply ran out of storylines, not to mention space in which to bury bodies under the patios in the small suburban close in Liverpool.
The body count piled up, exhausting credibility and the viewers fell away from millions to just a few hundred thousand in the end.
It happened in the US too.
Guiding Light – known as the “soap of soaps” – started life on radio, transferred to TV in 1952 but after running for 72 years the show was axed in 2009.
The tone of soap storylines has changed hugely. When I first appeared in Coronation Street during the 1980s, storylines were generally very workaday with a big emphasis on humour. The most important thing was establishing the personalty of a character followed by their relationship with other characters.
Looking at terrestrial TV today I can’t help thinking that in making people care about the personalities on screen, reality shows such as Love Island have stolen a march on “soapland”.
In the 1980s Corrie storylines could appear, by today’s standards, to be mundane.
They would centre around Jack Duckworth’s racing pigeon going missing or a chancer trying to muscle in on Eddie Yates’s window cleaning round.
But people watched because they had invested in the richly-drawn characters and cared what happened because, often as not, they saw the characters battling and dealing with problems and situations they were confronted with in their own lives.
Action-packed storylines did happen, but when they did the ratings were staggering. More than 27 million tuned in to see the Rovers Return burn down, while a similar figure saw dastardly Alan Bradley get poleaxed by a Blackpool tram as he chased Rita across the Promenade.
They happened but at a much slower pace than now, in step with how big events unfold in real people’s lives.
The key is in keeping things real.
Indeed, a friend and former colleague who is still very much part of the show insists that the lifeline for soaps lies in “a back to basics approach with a reliance on strong character-based scripts, actors that keep it real and allow a lovely humour to come through”.
He warns: “I don’t think we can do battle with the big dramas who can do dark themes better than us, they have more money and more time.
“We don’t need silly walks nor should we try them, just actors who can convey the reality of ordinary lives and are able to squeeze the humour out of real situations.”
As long as producers remember that, then it may still be a while before the end credits roll for good…
Phil Mitchell (played by Steve McFadden) is currently recovering from a brutal attack at the hands of Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner) on EastEnders.
Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) discovered his dad and used the opportunity to frame Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) in bid to drive a wedge between his dad and the young mechanic.
Keanu and Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) then fled the Square to start a new life with their unborn child on the BBC soap.
However Louise still doesn’t have a clue her fiancé and Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean) enjoyed a passionate affair, resulting in Sharon becoming pregnant.
Back in Walford, Ben’s plan backfired when Phil’s memory came trickling back, leading the Mitchell bad boy to come clean.
Ever since he’s been trying to win back his dad’s trust by tracking down his sister and Keanu.
As he talked things over with Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick), Ben concluded Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) most likely knows something about the couple’s whereabouts.
In upcoming episodes, Louise’s mother, Lisa Fowler (Lucy Benjamin) and Keanu will show up on the Square.
But Lisa intends on keeping her cards very close to her chest and Keanu plans on making Ben pay.
This could lead to a frustrated Ben interrogating Karen to find out exactly what she knows.

Could Karen let slip the truth about Keanu and Sharon as she tries to keep his whereabouts hidden?
EastEnders viewers certainly think this is one way their affair will be finally be exposed.
In a poll conducted by Express.co.uk, 23 percent of readers think Karen could let slip the truth about Keanu and Sharon’s affair to Ben.
Elsewhere, Mel Owen’s (Tamzin Outhwaite) death may have been revealed as she said her goodbyes last week.
Mel is planning on fleeing the Square with Hunter Owen (Charlie Winters), however it’s become clear he’s out for revenge.
EastEnders fans will see one Walford resident tragically die next week and fans suspect it’s Mel.
One tweeted: “Mel is tying up loose ends before she gets killed off next week #EastEnders.”
“EastEnders clearly it’s Mel who will get shot the actress is leaving! @bbceastenders,” another wrote.
A third added: “I still think Mel will die! Hunter dying is boring #Eastenders.”
EastEnders returns to BBC One tonight at 8pm.
