Three seasons down the line, the fledgling Drone Racing League (DRL) is still not a household name. But it continues to draw major broadcasters and is now set to make its debut on social media. For its upcoming world championship season, the DRL is making the switch from ESPN to the home of NASCAR: NBC and NBC Sports. For the first time, viewers will also be able to tune in on Twitter via the official @DroneRaceLeague account. The new season commences August 11th.

For the uninitiated, the races consists of minute-long heats that see pilots — with monikers, like “Jet” and “ShaggyFPV,” that wouldn’t look out of place in an eSports tournament — flying custom-built drones through neon-lit shapes on winding tracks at speeds over 90 miles per hour. A total of 18 pilots compete across the season, but only 10 make it through to the World Championship where a winner is crowned.

The brevity of the races makes the DRL ideal for attention-starved social media users. And the real-time tweets from fans, and sponsors, should also help create more word-of-mouth for the league. The new broadcasting deals follow the DRL’s recent three-year, international pact with China’s Youku livestreaming service, which is estimated to have more than 374 million viewers.

The UK is expanding drone no-fly zones around major airports https://briefnews.eu/the-uk-is-expanding-drone-no-fly-zones-around-major-airports/ https://briefnews.eu/the-uk-is-expanding-drone-no-fly-zones-around-major-airports/#respond Mon, 11 Mar 2019 15:01:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-uk-is-expanding-drone-no-fly-zones-around-major-airports/

Just a couple of months after drone sightings grounded flights at one of the UK’s busiest travel hubs, the nation is expanding drone no-fly zones around airports. As of Wednesday, the no-fly radius is widening from one kilometer to five kilometers (around three miles).

In December, drones spotted near Gatwick Airport led to flight operations being shut down for more than a day during the busy holiday travel period. The disruption affected more than a thousand flights and around 140,000 passengers — police have yet to find the perpetrators. Flight activity also stopped for around an hour at Heathrow in January after a drone was sighted nearby. Both airports bought anti-drone systems this year.

Through its upcoming Drones Bill, the government wants give police more power to stamp out drone misuse, including the ability to stop and search people suspected of using them maliciously near airports. If the bill becomes law, it will also grant police the power to access data stored on drones. Those who recklessly endanger flights with drones currently face up to a five-year prison sentence.

Canada adopts strict rules for drone flights https://briefnews.eu/canada-adopts-strict-rules-for-drone-flights/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-adopts-strict-rules-for-drone-flights/#respond Sun, 13 Jan 2019 21:21:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-adopts-strict-rules-for-drone-flights/

It’s Canada’s turn to implement rules for drone flights, and those in the pipeline could make the American approach seem lenient. Transport Canada has adopted new regulations that will require the registration of any drone weighing between 250g and 25kg (0.55lbs to 55lbs), and would-be pilots will have to be at least 14 years old and either a citizen or permanent resident. You’ll also have to obtain a pilot’s certificate, which entails an online exam for basic (general use) flights. Advanced drone operators, those who want to fly in controlled airspace or around bystanders, have to both take an exam and pass a flight review.

Some of the rules will sound familiar to those south of the Canadian border. You’ll have to fly under 400 feet and within line of sight, and you can’t fly close to airports, events or emergency situations unless you have a special certificate or belong to an emergency unit. You’ll have to be at least 16 if you want to fly near controlled airspace.

The new rules take effect June 1st, and they’ll carry stiff fines. Individuals can pay up to $ 3,000 for violations, and businesses can pay up to $ 15,000.

This could have serious ramifications for film crews, news outlets and others who want to fly in the country. It’s not shocking that the country might enforce tight rules, though. Canada has had its share of drone scares, including a collision (thankfully minor) at an airport in October of 2017. Combine that with recent incidents in the UK and Canadian rulemakers are clearly concerned about the potential for misuse, regardless of what their southern neighbors think.

Haunting drone footage captures extent of Magnitogorsk tragedy (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/haunting-drone-footage-captures-extent-of-magnitogorsk-tragedy-video/ https://briefnews.eu/haunting-drone-footage-captures-extent-of-magnitogorsk-tragedy-video/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 20:07:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/haunting-drone-footage-captures-extent-of-magnitogorsk-tragedy-video/

The aftermath of the tragic house collapse that saw at least 31 people lose their lives has been captured in startling drone footage, as rescue workers scramble to find survivors.

The devastating gas explosion rendered the 10-story residential building in Russia’s Urals to rubble on New Years Eve morning.

Four children died in the accident and residents are still missing. Six people have been rescued from the rubble, including an 11-month-old boy.

The video shows what looks like a scene from a war zone. A massive pile of rubble stands in the gap where the building once stood.

A wall of different coloured wallpaper is all that remains of the scores of apartments blown up in the explosion.

The haunting footage was filmed by Artyom Ibragimov who said he brought his drone to the site of the explosion when he heard the news.

Police make 2 arrests in connection with Gatwick airport drone shutdown https://briefnews.eu/police-make-2-arrests-in-connection-with-gatwick-airport-drone-shutdown/ https://briefnews.eu/police-make-2-arrests-in-connection-with-gatwick-airport-drone-shutdown/#respond Sat, 22 Dec 2018 02:37:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/police-make-2-arrests-in-connection-with-gatwick-airport-drone-shutdown/

Police in Sussex, UK, have arrested two individuals believed to be involved in bringing London’s Gatwick airport to a standstill for over 24 hours. Police said that the two alleged perpetrators were arrested as part of an investigation into the criminal use of drones just after 10 pm on Friday, without elaborating on their role in the incident or the charges they’re facing. It’s unclear if police are seeking any more suspects. “Every line of enquiry will remain open to us until we are confident that we have mitigated further threats to the safety of passengers,” police said in a statement. The UK’s second busiest air hub first reported sightings of drones at around 9.00 pm on Wednesday, which forced it to ground all outbound flights and divert incoming planes to other airports. The flights have resumed as of Friday afternoon.

In what appears to be the first intentional use of drones to disrupt civil aviation, continued sightings of two remotely piloted aircraft flying over and around the airfield at London’s Gatwick Airport starting the evening of December 19 have forced the airport to remain closed to flights for over a day. In a letter posted to Gatwick’s website, Gatwick Airport’s CEO called the continued drone activity “a highly targeted activity which has been designed to close the airport and bring maximum disruption in the run up to Christmas.” He also said the airport is cooperating with law enforcement to end the “criminal activity.”

As of 7:00pm London time on Thursday, Gatwick’s runway was still unavailable for takeoffs and landings “because of continued drone sightings,” the airport announced, and some airlines have cancelled all flights until further notice. “We apologize to all of our passengers who are impacted today, but the safety of our passengers and all staff is our priority,” an airport spokesperson said.

Drone sightings have been a safety concern around London’s airports for some time. In 2016, a British Airways flight landing at London’s Heathrow Airport apparently struck a drone while on approach for landing. Earlier that year, the United Kingdom’s Airprox air safety board issued an incident report on a near-miss in which a quadcopter drone passed within 20 feet of a landing Airbus A319 at Heathrow. And just a month ago, a drone came within 32 feet of a commuter aircraft landing at Edinburgh Airport. In the US, there have been hundreds of such incidents reported in recent years.

Gatwick Airport flights latest news update as planes GROUNDED by drone security breach https://briefnews.eu/gatwick-airport-flights-latest-news-update-as-planes-grounded-by-drone-security-breach/ https://briefnews.eu/gatwick-airport-flights-latest-news-update-as-planes-grounded-by-drone-security-breach/#respond Thu, 20 Dec 2018 11:35:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gatwick-airport-flights-latest-news-update-as-planes-grounded-by-drone-security-breach/

Gatwick Airport flights have all been grounded since last night when drones were spotted illegally flying over the airfield. The major security alert resulted in outbound flights being diverted and incoming planes diverted. They will remain disrupted for a further 24 hours, the hub has said. Passengers have been advised against travelling to the airport without checking the status of their flight first. Flights have been diverted to other airports including London Heathrow, Luton and Manchester as well as Paris and Amsterdam. This is the latest travel advice for travellers due to fly to or from the London airport, whether flying with Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic.

Thursday 20 December, 11.05am

Gatwick have announced passengers flying to or from Gatwick will face at least another 24 hours of disruption.

Passengers will not be entitled to compensation as a result of the incident but they could be entitled to food, accommodation and transport.

“Whilst these extraordinary circumstances unfortunately mean you are not entitled to compensation, you may still be entitled to meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation or transfers,” said Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of Home Products and Services.

“You don’t have to cancel your tickets though, as depending on the length of the delay, your airline should be providing you with alternative travel options or accommodation.”

Thursday 20 December, 10.52am

Police are now appealing for help in identifying those responsible for flying the drones over Gatwick. “We are appealing for information to help us identify the operators of the Gatwick drones,” Sussex Police tweeted. “If you know who’s responsible or have any information please call 999 and quote ref 1350-19/12.”

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw has said the incident is “absolutely” a deliberate act. He said: “This has been going on for 10 hours now. Each time we believe we get close to the operator, the drone disappears; when we look to reopen the airfield, the drone reappears. I’m absolutely convinced it’s a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport.”

Thursday 20 December, 10.24am

Police have said there is no evidence the drone incident at Gatwick is terror-related. Sussex police tweeted: “We are carrying out a joint search with Gatwick Airport for the operators of drones sighted at Gatwick. Public safety is paramount and we will take all available actions to disrupt this deliberate act. There are no indications to suggest this is terror-related.”

The last sighting of the drone was at about 8.45am today, police have said. Gatwick chief operating officer Chris Woodroofe has said police do not want to shoot the devices down because of the risk from stray bullets.

The airport is due to remain closed until 11am now, according to Eurocontrol.

Thursday 20 December, 10.15am

Experts say they believe the drones were deliberately used to create as much disruption at the airport as possible.

Former RAF fighter pilot and instructor Jon Parker, now an airline pilot, regularly flies into Gatwick and runs drone training company Flyby Technology. He told Sky News: “It sounds like more than one drone has been used which seems to me like it could be a concerted effort to disrupt operations.”

He added: “The usual practice is to suspend flights for half-an-hour which is the usual battery lifespan for drones but it may be in the Gatwick case whoever is responsible for this have had several batteries and have brought their drones back to the ground to put new batteries on them.”

Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw tod BBC more than 20 police units are searching for the drone operator. He said: “I’m absolutely convinced it’s a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport.”

Thursday 20 December, 10.05am

Rail operator LNER is offering free travel between London and Edinburgh for all passengers unable to fly between the two capitals due to Gatwick’s flight cancellations.

To qualify for free travel on LNER trains, passengers should show their flight ticket for their cancelled journey to the train manager.

Thursday 20 December, 9.52am

Ryanair has updated their travel advice on their website with the statement: “We have been advised that London Gatwick Airport expected to re-open at 10am (20 Dec) following an earlier runway closure. Please check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.”

Virgin Atlantic has posted the statement: “Flights to and from London Gatwick airport have been suspended this morning due to reports of drones flying close to the airfield.

“The safety and security of our customers and crew is our number one priority and we may be forced to delay or divert flights until the airport resumes full operation. We would like to assure any customers due to travel with us that we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to their travel plans. For the latest information please check Flight Status.”

Thursday 20 December, 9.45am

Gatwick’s boss has said one of the drones is a heavy industrial drone. It is illegal to fly drones within 1km of an airport boundary. The offence is punishable by up to five years in prison.

“All flights to and from Gatwick are suspended due to ongoing drone activity around the airport,” Gatwick have tweeted. “Unfortunately, there are significant delays and cancellations to all flights today. Please do not travel to the airport without checking the status of your flight with your airline first. We apologise to everyone affected, but the safety of all our passengers and staff is our number one priority.”

Thursday 20 December, 9.17am

Chris Woodroofe, COO of Gatwick Airport, told Sky News: “The police have 20 units out looking for the operator of that drone, and once they find them, they will bring them to justice, which is five years imprisonment for endangering an aircraft.”

EasyJet is advising passengers to not travel to Gatwick if their flights have been affected.

Thursday 20 December, 9.13am

Gatwick said 110,000 passengers were due to either take off or land at the airport on 760 flights today.

Thursday 20 December, 9.03am

Norwegian has announced all its Gatwick flights are grounded. Customers can be fully refunded if their flights are affected or they can rebook for free.

“Following reports of drones flying over Gatwick’s airfield in the early hours of this morning all flights remain suspended at the airport,” a Norwegian spokesperson told Express.co.uk

“Norwegian would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we advise customers to check the status of their flight on Norwegian.com before travelling to the airport.

“Customers on flights that have been cancelled can rebook free of charge or receive a full refund. The safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority.”

Thursday 20 December, 8.18am

Gatwick Airport has said police are still hunting for the person(s) responsible for flying the drone after another device was sighted just before 7am.

European air traffic management group Eurocontrol has said the runway will remain closed until 10am.

Thursday 20 December, 8.15am

It is illegal to fly drones close to airports. According to dronesafe.com: “On 30 July the UK drone rules changed to make it against the law to fly above 400ft (120m) and to make it against the law to fly your drone within 1km of an airport or airfield boundary.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has tweeted: “It is totally unacceptable to fly drones close to airports and anyone flouting the rules can face severe penalties including imprisonment. Anyone operating a drone must do so responsibly and observe all relevant rules and regulations.”

Thursday 20 December, 8.10am

Gatwick Airport confirms all flights remain grounded on Twitter: “Due to drone activity on the airfield at Gatwick, all arriving and departing flights are currently suspended.

“Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport today. We’re sorry to everyone affected, safety is our number 1 priority.”

They added: “Please do not travel to the airport without checking with your airline first.”

Thursday 20 December, 7.50am

Check-in queues at Gatwick continue to expand despite all flights being suspended.

Furious passengers have complained of being stuck in planes for hours. Many were forced to sleep overnight on the floor of Gatwick Airport or on planes stuck on the tarmac.

Thursday 20 December, 7.45am

easyJet announced on Twitter: “Due to the LGW closure overnight, we expect there to be some disruption to flights this morning.

“We advise customers to check flight tracker before travelling. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

British Airways released a statement, saying: “All flights to and from London Gatwick airport are suspended while authorities investigate reports of drones flying close to the airfield.”

Thursday 20 December, 7.40am

According to travel expert Simon Calder well over 50 easyJet flights would have been affected by the security breach and is the “worst affected airline,” Calder said on Good Morning Britain today.

Calder said the breach could be serious: “The Sussex Police believe there is more to it than a couple of idiots with a couple of drones flying,” he said.

The incident could cause particular trouble for those flying long haul due to the competition over seats at this time of year.

Calder said: “It is looking bad. If your flight is cancelled you go right to the back of the queue – you are struggling for seats and there are few seats available at this time of year.”

He cautioned passengers could be affected by flight disruption right up to Christmas Eve as a result of the drone incident.

“If you are flying long haul, even if the airport opened right at this very minute, there would still be hours of disruption and it could be up to before Christmas Eve before it is sorted out,” he said.

Drone shatters passenger jet’s nosecone & radar during landing (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/drone-shatters-passenger-jets-nosecone-radar-during-landing-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/drone-shatters-passenger-jets-nosecone-radar-during-landing-photos/#respond Fri, 14 Dec 2018 01:19:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/drone-shatters-passenger-jets-nosecone-radar-during-landing-photos/

A drone has collided with a passenger airplane in Mexico, mauling its nosecone and radome as the jet was attempting to land in Tijuana, Mexico. The crew had to request assistance to land the crippled aircraft.

An Aeromexico Boeing 737-800 collided with the remote-controlled craft while approaching the airport for landing on Wednesday, according to reports on social media which were later confirmed by the airline.

The crew of Flight AM770 reportedly requested assistance from the control tower after hearing a “very strong blow.” They were able to land without further incident. No passengers were injured.

Social media users cringed at photos of the damaged plane. “Imagine if that goes through a window or an engine,” one tweeted, reprimanding the “idiot” who would fly a drone near an airport runway.

Drone footage published by Ruptly reveals the shocking aftermath of a deadly train crash in Ankara, Turkey.

The video shows how one of the wagons of the derailed train crashed into the station platform. A collapsed overpass – as well as evidence of a collision with another train – is also visible, adding to the chaotic scene.

At least nine people have been killed and 47 injured in the high-speed rail disaster in Turkey’s capital. An official from the Ankara governor’s office told Reuters that the crash was caused by a collision with a local train.

This is the second train crash in Turkey this year. In July, 24 people were killed after a train derailed en route to Istanbul.

The country’s deadlines rail disaster came in 2004, when 139 people were killed and dozens more injured after an express train traveling from Istanbul to the nation’s capital derailed.
