Panera Bread is testing AI-powered bots at the drive-thru.

  • Panera Bread is known as a restaurant pioneer when it comes to technology.
  • The chain is working with tech startup OpenCity to test voice bot ordering at the drive-thru.
  • OpenCity, which also works with Popeyes, says AI-powered bots can improve accuracy and speed.

In 2019, Nick Belsito, CEO of food tech startup OpenCity, said many restaurant operators' eyes would glaze over when he talked about his company's artificial intelligence software at food conferences.

Before the pandemic, OpenCity used voice AI technology to automate restaurant reservation orders.

"When I mentioned A.I. before the pandemic, people looked at me like I was E.T. What is this other-worldly thing?" Belsito said.

With indoor dining shut down at the onset of the 2020 pandemic, the need for reservations went kaput while delivery and drive-thru orders surged. So Belsito shifted OpenCity's business model.

The startup now automates orders at the drive-thru using an AI-powered bot named Tori.

The adoption of Tori is picking up steam for the Boston-based startup. Last week, fast-casual giant Panera Bread began testing OpenCity's AI-powered tech at two upstate New York restaurants. Panera joins a Popeyes' franchise restaurant in Louisiana, which started piloting Tori in late April.

Belsito said OpenCity is taking advantage of a "unique" space with room to improve order accuracy and sales at the drive-thru, where sales represent about 75% of revenue for fast–food restaurants.

"This is core technology that's going to be vital to the future of restaurants," he said.

The owner of the Popeyes restaurant in Louisiana, David Damato, said his company, High Noon Restaurant Group, has seen good results, so far. Speed of service has increased by 20% and order accuracy is at nearly 100%.

The restaurant's drink sales have increased by 150% because Tori automatically upsells high-margin items such as soda fountain drinks, sides, and desserts.

Those stats captured the attention of Panera Bread.

Raj Anbalagan, senior vice president of digital and technology innovation, said Panera is hoping automation will elevate the guest experience by improving accuracy and speed at the drive-thru lane.

"There are a multitude of ways you can do it. And this was one of the ways that we felt that we could test to see if there is a true unlock," Anbalagan told Insider in a recent interview.

Anbalagan has been pushing innovation for years at Panera. He helped the brand launch digital ordering at the chain in 2014 by adding kiosks in the dining room and mobile orders scheduled through the chain's app.

Panera is known for building its tech stack in-house.

Still, for this experiment, Anbalagan said it was better to leverage OpenCity's tech "rather than investing and building on our own for the time being," he told Insider.

Specifically, Anbalagan said he was looking to gain a 5-10% improvement in speed of service using Tori.

He also hopes the experiential aspect of Tori will "delight our guest," he said.

Damato reinforced that Tori has been a "true game-changer" for the restaurant.

"The guests are having fun, and I was shocked at how quickly Tori learned the Louisiana accent," he said in a statement. "Our team members are loving Tori, too, as it reduces workplace stress since they can focus on serving the guest faster while Tori is taking the order."

Today, hundreds of restaurants across the US are using AI-powered bots to take phone and drive-thru orders including Chipotle, Fazoli's, and Domino's. Some are using OpenCity rivals such as Valyant AI and ConverseNow.

Belsito said, "Covid has been phenomenal" in changing how the restaurant industry thinks about technology.

"There's been a tremendous shift. The restaurant space has seen a change in the guard. They realize technology can be their friend," Belsito said.

OpenCity has raised $ 8 million and works with five different brands in about eight states. Backers include Composite Ventures and NXT Ventures.

"I expect to be in thousands of restaurants next year," Belsito said.

Is this the healthiest drive-thru in the UK? Weight Watchers takes on TAKEAWAYS https://briefnews.eu/is-this-the-healthiest-drive-thru-in-the-uk-weight-watchers-takes-on-takeaways/ https://briefnews.eu/is-this-the-healthiest-drive-thru-in-the-uk-weight-watchers-takes-on-takeaways/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2018 12:36:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-this-the-healthiest-drive-thru-in-the-uk-weight-watchers-takes-on-takeaways/

Weight Watchers has launched a healthy Drive Thru in the UK to prove eating healthily doesn’t have to mean restricting yourself.

Research has revealed Brits think about food once every minute in January, with feeling guilty about over indulging during the festive period and pressure to lose weight cited as the main reasons for having food on the brain.

All of the dishes being served at the Weight Watchers drive-thru have been cooked fresh from scratch and can easily be recreated in the comfort of your own kitchen.

It comes as reports show Britons see a number of foods as ‘off limits’ in January, with a third feeling they shouldn’t eat a takeaway.

Chinese was considered to be the most ‘off limits’ cuisine, with a quarter of 25-34 year olds also feeling that ordering an Indian was a no-go.

It seems like a good time for Weight Watchers to make its move on McDonald’s.

Zoe Griffiths, Head of Programme and Public Health at Weight Watchers said she wants to remove the thinking eating healthily is “difficult”.

She said: “For people to successfully lose weight and live healthier; simplicity and flexibility are key.

“The research findings indicate that people are feeling restricted on what they can eat, and this is causing them to think about food more and crave unhealthier options.

“We want to remove the thinking that being healthy is difficult or restrictive and show Brits how they can free their minds from constantly agonising over food choices.

“The Drive Thru showcases just some of the foods that you can eat on the Weight Watchers Flex programme, where no food is off limits, offering a wide range of zero Points foods that guide members toward a healthier pattern of eating. It gives people the freedom and flexibility they need to make significant lifestyle changes that have positive benefits beyond just weight loss.”

Weight Watchers launched the Drive Thru to celebrate the launch of the new Weight Watchers Flex programme, proving that eating healthy doesn’t have to be restrictive or difficult.

‘I never touched it’: Serena Williams tried to deposit her first million-dollar check in the bank drive-thru https://briefnews.eu/i-never-touched-it-serena-williams-tried-to-deposit-her-first-million-dollar-check-in-the-bank-drive-thru/ https://briefnews.eu/i-never-touched-it-serena-williams-tried-to-deposit-her-first-million-dollar-check-in-the-bank-drive-thru/#respond Sun, 17 Sep 2017 10:43:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/i-never-touched-it-serena-williams-tried-to-deposit-her-first-million-dollar-check-in-the-bank-drive-thru/ Serena WilliamsScott Barbour/GettyImages

Serena Williams may be one of the highest-paid athletes, according to Forbes — and the only woman to crack the top 100 — but she says she’s never been motivated by the money.

“I’ve actually never played for money — I just thought you would go out there and hold a trophy,” Williams said on “Kneading Dough,” the personal-finance video series produced by LeBron James’ media company, Uninterrupted.

“Not once did I think about a check,” Williams told sports business manager Maverick Carter.

“I just played for the love of the sport,” said Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam events, one fewer than the world-record holder Margaret Court. It comes as no surprise then that when Williams received her first million-dollar check she kept it safely in the bank.

“I never touched [the money] — just put it in the bank,” she said. “And I remember I went through the drive-thru to deposit my check, and then they were like, ‘I think you need to come in for this,’ and so I ended up going inside … ‘Just put it in my account!'”

The 35-year-old, whose career prize money tops $ 84 million, credits her parents with teaching her about the value of money at a young age.

“I never ever ever felt broke,” she told Carter in the video. “Looking back, I’m like, wow, we lived in a two-bedroom house with seven people … I don’t know how my parents were able to make me feel that way, but they did, and that was something really special. So I never felt when I came into money that I needed to go buy this [or that] because I never wanted it, so it was a great way [to grow up].”

Williams also said her father and longtime coach was “always hands-on” but never demanded a fee or a cut of her earnings, and he told her it was up to her to decide how she would spend her money.

“Since I was a teenager I’ve made every financial decision in my life, and I’ve had to learn how to make good ones and how to make bad ones, and it helps you make better ones,” she said.

Queen Elizabeth II is franchise owner of THIS UK McDonald’s Drive-Thru https://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-is-franchise-owner-of-this-uk-mcdonalds-drive-thru/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-is-franchise-owner-of-this-uk-mcdonalds-drive-thru/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 19:42:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-is-franchise-owner-of-this-uk-mcdonalds-drive-thru/

Back in 2008, one of the 91-year-old royal’s acquisitions was a retail park in Slough, which includes a drive-through McDonalds.

Bath Road Retail Park was bought in June that year by the Crown Estate.

The real estate business administers the monarch’s property portfolio, and the retail park was purchased for a whopping £92 million.

The site is visible from the Queen’s State Apartments at Windsor Castle.

Also at the time of the purchase, the retail park was home to a B&Q superstore, and branches of Comet, JJB Sports and Morthercare.

The Crown Estate told The Telegraph: “We are a reliable purchaser in this difficult market.”

While the Queen is technically owner of the McDonald’s, it’s unlikely she’ll be visiting it anytime soon.

The purchase was good news for the shops in the area because having the Queen as landlady means the future of the site is secure.

Other things you may not know about Queen Elizabeth II is how she uses certain objects to communicate with others.

It turns out her accessories are as inherent to her as crowns, hats and corgis as she uses them to signal to others what she wants to do.

According to royal historian Hugo Vickers, Hugo Vickers, she twists her wedding ring to signal to her staff she’s ready to move on from a conversation quickly, and wants them to intervene.

And it doesn’t stop there – she also uses her bag to indicate she’s ready to end chat.

Hugo told People magazine that in order to signal this, the Queen shifts her bag from one hand to the other.

She’s also been known to place her bag on a table at events to signal that she’s ready to leave.

It was also revealed earlier this year that Her Majesty spends more than a tenner on just one pair of socks.

According to Business Insider, the Queen buys her socks from a company called Corgi Hosiery Ltd – an appropriate brand, given her love of that particularly breed.

Don't Drink and Drive-Thru: Your Server May Be a Snitch https://briefnews.eu/dont-drink-and-drive-thru-your-server-may-be-a-snitch/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-drink-and-drive-thru-your-server-may-be-a-snitch/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 07:17:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-drink-and-drive-thru-your-server-may-be-a-snitch/

Forget plainclothes policing or fancy surveillance technology. The latest way cops are nabbing high and drunk drivers in the Canadian province of Ontario is by turning to an unlikely partner: pimply-faced fast-food workers stuck at restaurant drive-through windows.

In Barrie, police recently responded to Burger King employees by arresting a 34-year-old who had passed out drunk while waiting to place an order at the drive-through. Local officers also fielded a call from a McDonald’s where the staff reported that a drunkard exiting their drive-through had hit a vehicle and zoomed off. Over in Chatham, drive-through workers dialed the cops when a guy slipped into a boozy slumber and failed to pick up his food. And in Brantford, a patrol car blocked a green Ford from leaving an all-night drive-through after an employee there reported a driver who kept lurching forward and then braking suddenly.

We’ve seen a real step up from these drive-throughs in saying we want to work with police. I think it’s a great idea.

Andy Murie, CEO, MADD Canada

So pervasive is this kind of problem in Burlington — where 10 of 144 arrests involving impaired-driving charges occurred at a drive-through last year — that, in April, nearly 40 restaurants agreed to join forces with the local police. Welcome to Project Drive Thru, which uses a training video (below) so employees can help police pinpoint punks who might be intoxicated behind the wheel. It’s already led to five arrests in three months and is set to expand through more of the Halton region, including the cities of Milton and Oakville — home to nearly 300,000 people combined. “If that’s successful, hopefully other services will want to participate,” says Dave Stewart, the Halton Regional Police Service constable who developed the program, complete with emoji-friendly awareness posters aimed at young cashiers. “I think there are a lot more impaired drivers out there we’re not getting.”

Summertime usually sees a spike in impaired driving in many jurisdictions around the world. But it’s the leading criminal cause of death and injury in Canada, which is the worst offender among 10 high-income countries with the highest percentage of crash-related deaths involving alcohol, according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. That kind of reputation has led to all sorts of academic and political debates about boosting the drinking age for Canucks (currently 18 or 19, depending on the province or territory) or implementing a tax on alcohol that would get automatically increased — a provision that got yanked from a Senate bill in June. Meanwhile, some safe-driving advocates have decried the small yet growing number of liquor stores that are opening drive-through services, noting it’s tougher for cashiers to spot physical displays of intoxication like stumbling. Others are calling for broader education about the perils of consuming booze, given there were around 77,000 hospitalizations nationally last year due to conditions entirely caused by alcohol — more than for heart attacks.

Drunk driving is by no means limited to the land of the loonie, of course. There have been recent news reports of impaired drive-through visits in Waikato, New Zealand, and Stirling, Scotland. And it’s now the U.S. that’s the second-worst offender in the CDC’s report. In Connecticut, a 59-year-old was arrested for driving under the influence after he grabbed Taco Bell the night before Thanksgiving last year. And a 21-year-old Delaware man passed out at a McDonald’s drive-through before being tossed behind bars earlier this year. Turns out it was his third DUI arrest. Few Americans, though, seem willing to discuss whether anything similar to Project Drive Thru is already being tested in their backyard — the National Restaurant Association as well as state-based groups for California and New York, along with the National Association of Police Organizations, National Black Police Association and International Police Association, did not respond to OZY’s requests for comment.

It’s been 120 years since an English taxi driver got caught in the world’s first drunk-driving arrest. But it wasn’t until the 1980s, with the rise of groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), that bartenders, liquor store cashiers and other Good Samaritans in North America began calling 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. Safe-ride and safe-walk programs have since become more common at corporate parties, neighborhood gatherings and on many campuses. Yet Project Drive Thru in Burlington, which rolled out at certain McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, A&W, Wendy’s and Burger King locations, among other chains, expands these efforts to another heavily trafficked corner of the retail world. “We’ve seen a real step up from these drive-throughs in saying we want to work with police,” says Andy Murie, CEO of the anti-drinking-and-driving advocacy group MADD Canada. “I think it’s a great idea.”

Many caution that more still needs to be done to prevent future accidents. The most successful combatant against driving-related deaths among young people in Canada, Murie says, has included the introduction of graduated-licensing conditions with a zero-alcohol limit for those under 22 — certainly not general anti–drinking-and-driving ad campaigns that seem to have little direct impact on changing behavior.

Now safe-driving advocates are closely watching proposed legislation that will address impaired driving under cannabis as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government looks to legalize small amounts of marijuana by July 1 — Canada Day — next year. “We’ve seen a real surge in the number of drug-related deaths,” Murie says. “Cannabis is the No. 1 drug of choice, especially among young people. It’s a major concern for us.” Police in Burlington, at least, will have a head start on finding some of those with the munchies.

‘AmazonFresh Pickup’ offers drive-thru grocery shopping https://briefnews.eu/amazonfresh-pickup-offers-drive-thru-grocery-shopping/ https://briefnews.eu/amazonfresh-pickup-offers-drive-thru-grocery-shopping/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 05:25:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazonfresh-pickup-offers-drive-thru-grocery-shopping/ Amazon’s checkout-less grab-and-go store may have hit a snag, but the company isn’t letting that get in the way of other grocery-focused initiatives.

The Seattle-based giant on Tuesday teased a new AmazonFresh Pickup service where Prime members will be able to order their groceries online before turning up to collect them – all bagged and ready to go — from an AmazonFresh depot.

Described by the company as “a fast and easy way to order groceries, pick them up, and be on your way in minutes,” the new service eliminates shipping costs for customers. It also provides them with more options for receiving their groceries, with offered items including everything from meat to dairy products, as well as a broad range of everyday essentials.

The service is currently being tested with Amazon employees at two depots in the company’s home city. It hasn’t announced an official launch date yet, but Tuesday’s release of a promo video (above) and webpage suggest its arrival is imminent.

Initial launch locations are likely to be places where the AmazonFresh delivery service is already operating, which includes cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Boston.

It’ll be free for $ 99-a-year Prime members, while AmazonFresh members paying the monthly $ 15 fee will see some extra benefits, such as having their grocery orders ready in as little as 15 minutes. Non-Fresh members, on the other hand, can only collect their order at least two hours after placing it.

Amazon hopes the new service will prove popular with users who don’t like having to deal with delivery windows and prefer instead the convenience of popping into a depot to pick up their groceries at a time of their choosing, which could be while running errands or on the way home from work.

Advantages for Amazon include reduced pressure on its delivery services, and a possible boost in Prime membership if other shoppers like the sound of the scheme.

The company better known for its gigantic online operation has for several years been taking a closer look at how it might expand its business to physical locations. Pop-up stores have been used to promote its growing inventory of tech goods, while in 2015 it opened the first of several brick-and-mortar bookstores.

More recently it announced Amazon Go, a grocery store where you can grab what you need and leave without going to a checkout, with the cost of the goods automatically deducted from your bank account as you leave the store. However, reports this week suggested it’s facing challenges getting the technology to work properly. There’s also talk of the company building stores to sell furniture and appliances that may use augmented reality to help shoppers choose the most suitable items.

AmazonFresh Pickup, meanwhile, is another effort geared toward taking a larger chunk of America’s multi-billion-dollar grocery market.
